The Morning Report — 7/8/22

RIPAbe.jpg

Good morning, kids. The weekend is here and, mangling Elton John's lyrics, I guess that's why they call it the news, as about the last thing I expected to report is that former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe was assassinated yesterday while making a campaign speech. From what I can glean, the assassin is in custody, though nothing about possible motives is known, or has yet to be released.

Out of the blue as this is, there are some connections to things we are dealing with at home as well as on the international scene. For starters, Japan is one of the most peaceful societies on the planet. Murder is extremely rare, mostly owing to the complete homogeneity of the population and culture, and — take note 2-A abolitionists — private ownership of firearms is virtually 100% illegal. The weapon used to kill Abe is supposedly some sort of homemade shotgun. But there are other things that might raise an eyebrow:

Abe was the first world leader to meet with President Trump after his 2016 election and the two had a warm relationship. Trump posted on Truth Social early Friday morning:

"Absolutely devastating news that former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan, a truly great man and leader, has been shot, and is in very serious condition. He was a true friend of mine and, much more importantly,
America. This is a tremendous blow to the wonderful people of Japan, who loved and admired him so much. We are all praying for Shinzo and his beautiful family!"
. . .

. . . [So-called quote-unquote "president"] Biden has apparently not yet been roused from his slumber to comment on the situation. No doubt his staff is scrambling to figure out a way to blame Trump for the shooting. . .

. . . The former PM has been a critic of China in recent years and has angered the government there. In November he declared that the U.S. and Japan should defend Taiwan from Chinese aggression: “A Taiwan emergency is a Japanese emergency, and therefore an emergency for the Japan-U.S. alliance. People in Beijing, President Xi Jinping in particular, should never have a misunderstanding in recognising this,” he said. In an April op-ed, he blasted [so-called quote-unquote "president"] Joe Biden for his ambiguous policy toward Taiwan, criticizing “America’s unwillingness to say explicitly that it will ‘defend Taiwan’ should it be attacked.”

Unequivocal friend of Trump and America, openly adversarial to Xi. Make of that what you will. Of course, it could have been just a lone psycho addicted to eyeball-licking and tentacle porn (Kurt Eichenwald evidently has an alibi). In any case, the real America has lost a friend and staunch ally at a time when we can ill afford to lose one.

このたびはご愁傷さまでございます — “On this sad occasion we grieve with you.”

* * * * *

Closer to home, a lot closer in my case, this story that Ace covered yesterday is about as Orwellian a nightmare that you can find. Except in this case, it's all too real.

Under our law, a person may use deadly physical force upon another individual when, and to the extent that, “he/she reasonably believes it to be necessary to defend himself/herself [or someone else] from what he/she reasonably believes to be the use or imminent use of [unlawful] deadly physical force by such individual.”

Are the actions of Mr. Alba reasonable? Of course they are. Mr. Alba was attacked; he was not the aggressor. The attacker came behind the counter to attack him. The attacker was bigger, younger and stronger. A reasonable person would have believed he was in imminent threat from an attacker who kept coming. To those who disagree, I ask: what should have Mr. Alba have done? There is no time to call the police and no assistance was coming from anywhere. . .

. . . It is truly shocking that the DA has decided to prosecute Mr. Alba for defending himself in a clear-cut case of self-defense Fortunately, we will have a jury that will make things right.

In the current environment, bodegas and retail stores have become open targets for shoplifters and those seeking to hurt store employees. There is no fear of any consequences because the police have made these cases a low priority. And this is the result of a misguided policy. Mr. Alba and others like him have had to step into the breach and protect themselves. The right to defend ourselves is a long-established right that goes back to the earliest codification of criminal law.

When the police will not act, when the DA’s Office has taken the side of the attackers, what is one to do?

Given the fact that NYC is a microcosm of the Junta that controls our government, what the ordinary citizen— and in reality, serf — is supposed to do is lie back and take it. "To preserve our liberal world order," of course. Unaffordable gas, groceries and medicine? Letting street thugs rob you at knife- or gunpoint, or DC thugs rob you on April 15th? You better believe it. And you better sing their praises lest you find yourself in the Garland Archipelago, or in the case of Jose Alba, Rikers Island.

To effectively defend yourself against an attacker is to negate the argument that only the government and its sanctioned agents in law enforcement can do that, or are qualified to do that. Guns are far too dangerous to allow ordinary citizens to own one, or so goes the rationale. Hello, Uvalde? Marjorie Stoneman-Douglass? Bueller? "Fuck you, Sefton. The guy didn't even have a gun!" BINGO! As I said, it's not that you shouldn't be allowed to defend yourself with a gun. You should not be allowed to defend yourself, period.

This junta and its Nazi collaborator Soros puppets masquerading as DAs, and in this case the putrid, Marxist scumbag racialist Alvin Bragg, are all in on "social justice." Translation: retribution for slavery and Jim Crow that have not been a real thing for 60-160 years and the imaginary sin of existing while white. White being normal American of any color. NB, Jose Alba is Indian (dot, not feathers).

There has been an update to this story as I am writing:

The Manhattan bodega worker charged with murder after fighting off a violent ex-con in his store over the weekend was finally home Thursday night after he was released on bail in the highly publicized case.

Jose Alba, 61, arrived at his Hamilton Heights apartment around 8:30 p.m. wearing an electronic monitor hours after a Manhattan judge agreed to lower his sky-high bail from $250,000 to $50,000. . .

. . .Before his release, Alba had been locked up at Rikers Island on a murder rap for his fatal encounter with Austin Simon, 35, on Friday night inside the Hamilton Heights bodega where he works.

Relatives and Alba’s boss posted $5,000 needed to spring him on a bail bond.

As part of his release agreement, Alba is also barred from leaving New York City and he had to surrender his passport, ensuring he will not be going to the Dominican Republic on a previously planned trip.

What a fucking travesty. But what do you expect when we have a criminal justice system that lets rioters run wild in the streets for weeks at a time, B-urning L-ooting M-urdering and laying waste to scores of American cities and hailed as mostly peaceful legitimate protestors while actual peaceful protesters are locked up for a year-and-a-half on an entrapment sting and slimed as traitors and insurrectionists. On top of that, those that stole a national election and committed actual treason sit in judgement in kangaroo courts over the real victims, Trump and his allies, while rigged courts and juries in DC let the Klinesmiths, McCabes, Strzoks, Sussmans off scot free with apologies, book deals and CNN gigs as parting gifts.

To continue with the theme of positivity from yesterday, this Chesa Boudin psycho was recalled from San Francisco, a city whose citizenry in the main are not known for being conservative and his replacement was just named, Brooke Jenkins, who quit Boudin’s office in 2021 to volunteer for the recall. Again this is San Francisco, after all, so we'll see how she does, although the problem there is systemic and structural. Laws will have to be changed and that's on London Breed, the city council and ultimately the brilliantine pretty boy governor.

Ditto for this George Gascon freak a few hundred miles to the south in LA, where he too will now face a recall. Again, it's California. And yet Californians seemingly have had enough of what they themselves voted for. But, they did vote for it which begs the question, do they now have the self-awareness to understand that and to actually change their mindset? That is the question and it is applicable to our society as a whole as we hurtle headlong into an abyss with a drooling, gibbering, demented vegetable being manipulated out of Kalorama.

* * * * *

Friends, this will be my last column for a while, since one week from today I'll be leaving New York. Until then, I'll be knee deep in bubble wrap, boxes and tape, but I'll be back on Tuesday the 19th if all goes to plan.

Have a great weekend.

It is highly unlikely that this assassin acted alone.

I'll say it until I the day I die; everything started falling to shit, rapidly, about fifteen minutes after the USSR collapsed. Because everything the West had built to counter the Soviets immediately started looking for a new enemy. They found it, all right. The West itself.

If we were smart, we would have immediately started tearing those institutions down, as fast as the Germans dismantled the Berlin Wall. We chose poorly.

154 Not going to bother with that American Thinker piece. It already suffers from two fatal flaws in the title.

1) The people fleeing the blue states are not liberals, they are conservatives. Case in point, Cruz had a higher margin of victory among new residents of Texas than established residents. The migration is making the red states redder. The two generation Democrat dominance in Florida was wiped out by new registrations.

2) The states they are moving to have all passed new election laws to reduce fraud. There is nothing to "bring" with them, since the election processes are in place already.

We are seeing that unfolding by the minute right here. Got out of the car with a baseball bat to get his point across about being left alone. Squeegee kid pulls gun and kills him right there in front of about a jillion people.

He is not the first postwar PM to visit Yasukuni and I never understood the lambasting they take for doing so. Japan was despicable and evil in the early-mid 20th century and are rightly condemned for their behavior, but all countries honor their war dead. Yasukuni is not a shrine to the dead of expansionist Imperial Japan, it is a shrine to all of Japan's war dead and state visits there are not inappropriate.

His expansion of the defense budget was probably the bigger deal, along with his approach - which I think is right for a national leader - that he was more interested in revitalizing Japan and building her hegemony than he was interested in other things. Nobody every excoriates Xi because Red China is priority 1 for him. He isn't an "divisive conservative" for some reason. Odd, that.

I'd be interested in the numbers. Did more than the standard 99.97% of the population die from the COVIDs like everywhere else because it was a cold virus that doctors and hospitals weren't allowed to treat based on a coordinated goal of the WEF?

Or were Japan's numbers exactly like everyone elses? Matter of fact, I'm betting everyones numbers were 100% exactly the same. There was no standard of counting so far as I know (see also: live birth), so the numbers can never be adequately compared.

It was an op. They moved elderly people into nursing homes on purpose for it. They killed your friends and family for this moment. Look around at what's happening with oil and gas prices, inflation, and your loss of wealth. This is why they did it.. Never forget that.

True. The Lefties hate to admit their states are failures. It was big last summer on Minnesota Twitter for Lefties to post pictures of their backyard, or gated community, and snark something along the lines of "Ooooh! Looks really terrible, right?"
Meanwhile, at the time they're taking their pics, downtown Minneapolis would be like a scene out of Grand Theft Auto, but the Lefties don't have to go there, and can't admit that their policies destroyed downtown. But they're not moving. And why would they? Venezuela's a failed state, but Maduro is living well.

What really astounded me in all the revelations during the Trump era was just how cheaply our government class can be bought. I remember seeing that John Bolton betrayed the president for around, I think, $10k or $15k - the political equivalent of a ham sandwich.

When I learned that I - just a guy with a good W2 job - could afford to buy the likes of John Bolton (assuming I had the connections and access, which I don't), it actually did shock me. I figured these guys selling out their country and making deals with the devil would be pulling serious coin - not less than the cost of a cheap midsized car.

Most leaders were either nationalists or imperialists (in the sense of having discrete realms under their control instead of trying to have one more unified one). Allowing citizens to defend themselves obviously is at odds with that idea, so of course they will prosecute you for such things.

Something came out before the election that Biden - through Hunter, of course - was bought by China for $10M. Not even money made by a first round QB in the NFL draft, and they own the most powerful office in the United States.

It might not be. When the SPR is released, it is sold. That company may have put in a winning bid and Hunter's history with them is purely coincidental. There is a significant chance that this is exactly what happened.

But it also doesn't matter in the slightest. The onus to prevent conflicts of interest (or the appearance of conflicts of interest) is on the conflicted party. That company - and more to the point, any company from any rival or enemy country - should have been excluded from the operation. It wasn't. That's on the administration and therefore that's on Biden.

If my division puts out a call for bids on a project and my brother's company puts in a winning bid - even if I didn't know about it at the time - I am required to disclose the relationship and have the executive staff or board make the call as to whether to continue or change vendors. I will certainly not be part of the project from that day forward if they keep the same vendor. If I don't do that, I'll be fired for good reason.

As Joe noted above the payments are more in exchange for favors or support on a given issue, they generally aren't owned outright by one group. That Senate seat Blagojevich tried to sell for 1 million would've been paid for by selling out a multitude of times for smaller amounts.

Yet, you still hear EV owners claim they either pay "nothing" or "practically nothing" to charge their vehicles. It's obviously bullshit, but so many people still believe it.

My electric COOP puts out a monthly magazine and a couple issues ago had some pretty useful info on what it takes, money and power wise to home charge an EV. The costs are nowhere near "nothing." In fact, depending on the type of charging kit required for the EV it could cost 10's of thousands of dollars to get one installed and hooked up to the grid. Assuming it can support it.

Lastly, with the junta's crippling energy policies I think the "free" charging stations at businesses and elsewhere are a thing of the past.

390 The worst part about interstate moves is having to pick whether time or money is more important, and then preparing to spend a whole lot of the other one.

When I moved last year, time was by far the most important factor, since I had started a new job and didn't have vacation time yet and so was off the clock. I packed everything I could in the lead-up and then took a total of three days off work to finish packing and disassembly, finish cleanup, get the movers in, pack up the container load my vital shit I need for work into the car, and hit the road. I worked from an empty room while I waited for the container to arrive and get movers in for the unload.

But I got a long-haul move done with only three days off work. All it took was a lot of money and discomfort and exhaustion. If I ever do this again, I'm taking more time and damn the consequences.

395 One more factor, since the effective range on an EV is lower, for a longer trip those ~$30 charges are happening more frequently, along with a nice 45+ minute break while the batteries charge.

The EV is really not a practical choice for anything other that a commute, where you can charge the vehicle at home.

But the $152 bitching still makes me smile.

It won't take the sun to wipe out the grid. It's deteriorating anyways. But, this worry about the sun has been around for 40 years. Nuclear waste can be solved by running spent rods through a breeder reactor and reusing them. Carter killed several projects in process and even though Reagan rescinded it, no one wants to invest the cash. (see refineries for current reference) Want to fix it? There needs to be an ironclad law that investments like that can't be undone and only phased out after the life of the investment.

You also get the other benefit of capricious vanity intervention in the market: politicians want to receive honor, praise and glory for funding the construction of new charging stations, but don't set aside even one dime for the maintenance of this growing fleet of obsolete rubbish.

More and more of these things are susceptible to vandalism, weathering, and regular wear and tear. The connection "standards" are still evolving making older first generation connections undesirable and thus unmaintained.

I suspect that question is moot at this point. Of the Asian countries with the technical and industrial capacity (Japan, Korea, probably Taiwan), I imagine they all have nukes now or soon will. Any that didn't have them before would have been insane to *not* start crash programs within a few weeks after the 2020 elections here. If there's one thing I've learned, its that there is no such thing as an airtight contract or law. Rules are made to be broken, no matter how perfectly written. That was the critical flaw in our founding - the idea that men would be constrained by the chains of constitution. Shit simply does not work that way.

Long story short - there is no law that can be made to stop a culture from routinely destroying it's own infrastructure. If they want to do that, they will. The best thing you can do is don't protect them; let some other culture that's slightly less stupid displace them.

China ain't sharing, Australia has gone full Communist and I think we are at war with Russia, so there goes the vast majority of copper mining.

Not quite. Studebaker marketed their first car (an electric!) in 1902. They converted their wagon works to automotive production 20 years later. There was still enough wagon business that they sold the name and some patents to another company, who made wagons until the Depression put them under. It was still common to see horse-drawn freight (garbage haulers, milkmen, hucksters) until WWII, in or near cities. Farm horses had a resurgence during fuel rationing, too, but separate issue.

Or, even worse, the whole "once the bond is paid, the toll will be removed." This is why I refused to drive the E-470 expressway in Denver. That highway complex was supposed to be an Interstate system ring road, but the enviros got it nixed and by the time that was overcome, the federal DOT said, "nah, we're not interested anymore." The state decided to build the road itself, in sections. The second section was E-470, which was a tolled highway. The premise was that construction was expensive and it needed major bonds, and those bonds had to be covered. It would be tolled through the bond life. Fair enough. It got voter approval.

The year the bonds were finished, they raised the tolls dramatically. I never drove on that lie of a road again.

I have yet to talk to a utility that gets better than 20% utilization rate from any wind farm in the United States.

Ponder that ... every mW of wind purchased only gets you a fifth of what you think you bought. Every business case to construct one of these things is automatically off by a factor or five. It's stunning.

Every utility that I've talked to, every single one, has quit putting money back into the projects. They're cannibalizing the existing fleet - and that'll be the end of it.

Exactly. Throughout the summer Texas sits under a massive high pressure dome which does two things: little to no wind, and very high temperatures.

This is why the boneheads in Texas government should be mercilessly hounded out of office and horse whipped because this is not Breaking Climate Science™ but well known, ageless fact. one of the "big lies" about wind power (which everyone in the business knows about) is that even in supposedly windy West Texas, the windmills never produce at more than 40% of installed capacity. The wind is too low 60% of the time. Why are so many energy companies in on this game? Because to make up for the shortfall, every wind power plant has a back up "emergency" nat gas plant, which provides power that can then be sold at subsidized "green energy" rates.

yes, you read that correctly - the "emergency backup system" is running 60% of the time, the main system only is operational 40% of the time, and that's on a good day.

592 Abe's murder:

Last night, on ONT, a poster explained that in Japan, like everywhere else, guns will ALWAYS be available for purchase, because of underworld smuggling.

I challenged that. The yakuza (Japanese organized crime) don't much use firearms now, because the penalties are incredible. LWOP (life without parole) is a genuine possibility for gun offenses in Japan.

But here's my real point: I just saw a photo of the firearm used to murder Abe. It's homemade, using duct tape & two small plumbing pipes! Built along the same lines as a 1950s zip gun.

So Abe's murder is NOT a good platform on which to expound that "guns are available everywhere, no matter what the law says." Buying a handgun in Japan is about as difficult as buying a surface-to-air missile.

I'm NOT a gun grabber. I just like to keep a gimlet eye on the facts.

593 592 Posted by: mnw at July 08, 2022 01:13 PM (NLIak)

The salient point, though, is that no matter what laws you create or even banning firearms completely, it will not absolutely deter anyone from either getting a gun, or in this case making one, and using it to kill, or killing with any other weapon or with bare hands.

Japan's culture and homogeneity of same is the reason so little murders are committed anyway.
