Bunny ranch massage parlor. Except it's with real bunnies, and it's real massages. And it's not a ranch. Life is a lie, deal with it.

Here's a short YouTube documentary about a morbid little 60s pop music fad, the "death discs" or "splatter platters."

I was aware of the phenomenon of songs about young people dying or committing suicide, but I only knew a couple of songs. Like "Dead Man's Curve," and "Leader of the Pack." (I think?)

From my abortive attempt to read Christine, I know one part of the book was called something like "Teenaged Death Songs," and the chapters started with lyrics from these songs.

Queen's "I Want to Break Free," played on an orchestra of old computer equipment, called the Floppotron 3.0.

Bye bye!

3 Not explicitly about people committing suicide, but a review of Soundgarden's lyrics after Chris Cornell offed himself reveals quite a lot of casual references to death and suicide that are now very difficult to un-hear when those songs are playing. Perhaps he spent 30 years trying to tell us something...

Chris Cornell's best friend was the lead singer of Mother Love Bone and committed suicide. Mother Love Bone was auditioning Eddie Vedder to be the front man for their new band Pearl Jam, but decided to record a tribute album to their dead singer under the name of Temple of the Dog, with Cornell doing the singing first. Cornell was having trouble getting "Hungry" right, and Vedder stepped in during his Pearl Jam audition and nailed the backup singing for Chris.

96 There was one I remember from Lilek's podcast. 60's, I think where the guy is writing a letter from Vietnam to his girl back home. At the end he is telling her he is coming home and just as he is about to tell her he is going to ask her to marry him the minute he sees her, he is cut short by an actual bullet sound. Then a buddy finishes the letter for the dead guy and sends it on to her after finding the letter in his buddies things.

As Lilek's said in the podcast, WHO in hell was the market for this?

There is a song from the 70s that was being recorded in a studio and it just so happened that a woman was murdered next door. Her scream made it onto the cut, and you can still hear it. "Love Rollercoaster" by the Ohio Players.

Supposedly its an urban legend and has been debunked, but that's bullshit. The scream is haunting and never leaves you, ever.

139 "The Eagle and the Bear" photo . . . true story. The eagle caught the bear by surprised and sank its talons into its brain whilst it was sleeping, killing it.

Realizing that it'd punched way above its own weight, the eagle then spent the next few days dragging the bear up that tree, attempting to bring that giant pile o' food up to its chicks.

Sadly, by the time the eagle finally dragged the bear up to its nest, its chicks had starved to death.

Nature photos always have the most interesting backstories.

While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

362 Also popular from the1960's - Billy Joe McAllister (can't stand it) & One Hand One Heart (the latter from West Side Story) among others.

The 1960s may have been a time of post-war entertainment for the USA with the (original) Titanic, West Side Story, Psycho; ganster, war and western & monster movies. (Not well versed in film so it's just a wild guess.) Even young kids went to the movies on weekends, dragging siblings along to give parents peace. And then in the evenings had teen dances in school gyms, firehouses, splash parties; the occasional traveling circuses and carnivals coming through towns; drag racing at airports & on city streets. A different time indeed.

Good thread, Ace. Thanks.

374 If you look through lesser known 19th century religious and popular music (and earlier) it is amazing how many of them are laments and songs about death. It's only in the 20th century and after that we started feeling that everything needed to be happy-happy joy-joy all the time. I think our forbears had a much more realistic view of life.
Posted by: Tom Servo at July 15, 2022 08:52 PM (q3gwH)

It isn't amazing at all. I'm a civil war buff and even well off players in the era had lots of brushes with death.
Jeff Davis eloped with his first wife to honeymoon to a plantation. They caught a fever and she died, and he had lifetime nerve pain spells from it. One of his sons died during the war (a fall), as did one of Abraham Lincoln's - disease. William T Sherman lost a son to disease as well. James Longstreet was fighting in Virginia with his family in Richmond and three children died of fever in a week's time. The writer of the book said he was "somewhat quieter than he had been previously". General John Bell Hood after the war died in a Yellow Fever epidemic that killed his wife and oldest child. The other 10 were raised on money donated by his troops.

CSA Gen'l Lewis Armistead had two wives die as well as two kids die prior to the war.

Then he was missing his ol' buddy US Gen'l Winfield Hancock on the other side of the rock wall at The Angle that he just wanted to see the man again, but died at the High Water Mark of the Confederacy.

They had tough lives, but they believed fervently in God and were brave and stoic in a way that modern people just can't really understand.

good examples, all. An old Sacred Harp song I've heard (originally published 183 was called David's Lamentation.

David the king was grieved and moved
He went to his chamber, and wept;
And as he went he wept, and said,
“Oh my son! Would to God I had died
For thee, Oh Absalom, my son.”

Absolom was a bad son who tried to overthrow his father, no church would sing that today. and yet the song in a very simple but powerful way captures the real grief a parent feels for a lost child, even a disobedient one. It's very moving.
