Me: Interest rates are at historic lows, screw finding a new place to rent, I'm going to buy a house.

Reserve Bank of Australia: Increases interest rates three times in three months. (Domain)

Thanks guys. Though at least our reserve bank is doing something, and we don't have anyone down here blaming inflation on the Great Patriotic War.

On the eleventh hand, my mortgage payments have gone up 13.5% and I haven't finished moving yet.
Private information - including police records - on a billion people has reportedly been stolen and is up for sale for 10 Bitcoin. (Nikkei Asia)

In a novel twist, the data has been stolen from China.

Reportedly hackers exfiltrated the Shanghai National Police database. There's no such thing as the Shanghai National Police, but that doesn't mean there isn't such a database, and reports say at least some of the data checks out.

Anyone know of a good solution for scanning largish physical media like LP cover art? A3 scanners aren't too expensive but are just slightly too small.
A Xiaomi 12S Ultra and a very steady hand might do in a pinch. (Engadget)

It has a 50MP Leica camera with a 1" Sony CMOS sensor.

If you're thinking to yourself that a 1" sensor is far too large to fit and the camera bump would take up the entire back of the phone the answer is basically yeah it does. (Xiaomi)
Xiaomi also has a couple of new laptops with high-resolution OLED screens and the four essential keys. (VideoCardz)

They max out at 16GB of RAM so they're not really aimed at me, but they do look pretty.
You can no longer see permissions required by an app in Google's Play store. (BlueSpace)

You can still see them, but only after you have downloaded and installed the app, which is a bit too late if you wanted to check if the app was safe to install in the first place.

Use a pro with a big scanner to scan LP covers abd such. Even blueprints can be scanned these days. That pro pays for the capital costs, and the service charge is less than you buying one.

Fixed rate mortgages exist here, but they factor in the expected rate increases. Since everyone knew rates were going to go up, and banks are averse to giving away their money (at least to us plebs), the interest rate on a fixed mortgage was about double the variable rate when I got my loan.

Yeah, that's the plan. Even easier, I have a mortgage offset account - money I deposit there automatically gets deducted from the interest calculation, but it's not locked up.

It doesn't pay interest, but the interest it saves doesn't count as income so you don't pay tax on it.

An economist on NewsMax a couple days ago said that the traditional method of fighting inflation is to raise interest rates higher than the rate of inflation. I'm not sure how high the inflation rate is in the land down under, but I'd guess between six and eight percent.

Adjustable rate mortgages suck. Mine actually went to nearly 17%. I could have continued to pay a fixed payment, but negative amortization kicked in.

Taking a long term view of real estate; it has an annual appreciation rate of about 4% - and you have to live somewhere. View the cost of the mortgage against the cost of renting, now assume the real estate appreciates 4% every year. You'll see on a long enough timeline you'll come way ahead. Short term fluctuations in markets and interest rates will however abound.

Australian banks are notoriously conservative. When the global financial crisis hit we came through intact because they don't play those game, but as you say, 30 year fixed rate mortgages don't exist.

You can get a 10 year fixed rate mortgage, but they factor in a year of monthly interest rate increases that you would pay in advance. A 10-year fixed loan that converted to variable rate after that would have added 70% to my monthly payments.

No, it is system wide, thru out the Pentagon also. They were migrating our outlook to another "system" and I "Think" someone threw the switch to soon and fucked up. The easiest way to scan large formats is to do multiple scans and then use a Photo Stitching software which will automatically match the edges and combine the scans into one image. Then you just need to clean up and crop the resulting single file in a photo editor.

There are lots of software out there, many for free, and it’s much cheaper than buying a large format scanner.

201 Scanning LP covers: I pinned the cover to a wall, used my DSLR with long lens and tripod and shot the cover from about 10ft away. Came out looking great.

203 As noted above, DSLR on a tripod with a light box (they don’t have to be as expensive as they sound) will get very good results.

A prime lens will work best, but either way use a portrait focal length to minimize lens distortion. 85mm on an APS (full frame) sensor, or 135mm on an APS-C sensor. In the US there are a few places you can rent a lens you don’t have.

Alternatively, there are places that will do this sort of “scanning” for you.

205 I hate Apps. I have a G-Shock with heart rate monitor function, but I only access half the functionality because the App was so bad. The permissions it wanted were ridiculous and unnecessary and it randomly wiped the setup and personalization already input.
I deleted it. Now if anything comes with an "App" to control and use it, I don't buy it.

But the discussion does remind me that the invention of the CD killed what had become a minor art form: the LP album cover. A square foot is a lot of surface to fill - almost twice the size of magazine cover - and some artists filled those surfaces with some very interesting work. Digital technology is a great gain; but no great gain comes without at least some small loss.

208 Large scale scanning
I've done a lot of this, often to exact geometric dimensions. In order of accuracy and ease:
1) Good camera with a telephoto lens, photo taken at greatest distance possible to (mostly) fill the frame. You can use a mirror to double the distance. Do have a color strip in the field to correct lighting.
2) Flatbed scan pieces and manually stitch as different layers in photo-editing software. Set top layer to "difference", align to total black on the overlap, then lock the layer and return it to "normal". Easier than it sounds, even on gigapixel frames.
3) Good camera, normal lens, and use distortion-correcting software, ie. a plugin in PS or Lightroom.
4) Flatbed scan pieces and use stitching software - PTGui, AutoPano, Lightroom, etc.

On the other hand, there are dedicated "channels" of video about funny animals or drunken young men's dangerous stunts or topless college girls, so it's not like " Art " is losing more than it gained. Is it?

213 Pixy, they still sell handheld scanners. Those typically come with software to stitch the stripes together for a single scanned item with multiple passes.

Digital camera and a tripod for stability. Will take some fiddling to get it into frame, but once you get the first one right you can easily switch out the LPs without much further adjustment...
