There are three important steps that I want you to remember,” the video’s host states. “Step one: get inside, fast. You, your friends, your family … get inside. And, no, staying in the car is not an option. You need to get into a building and move away from the windows.” “Step two: stay inside. Shut all doors and windows. Have a basement? Head there. If you don’t have one, get as far into the middle of the building as possible,” she continues. “If you were outside after the blast, get clean immediately. Remove and bag all outer clothing to keep radioactive dust or ash away from your body.” “Step three: stay tuned. Follow media for more information. Don’t forget to sign up for Notify NYC for official alerts and updates. And don’t go outside until officials say it’s safe. Alright? You’ve got this,” the host adds. "And if you are hungry, just order from GrubHub...don't go out."[I may have added a line] NYC has a $100 billion budget, so this sort of nonsense shouldn't surprise you! But the idiocy is delicious. This fool thinks that after a nuclear strike the cellular systems will be working? It's government in a nutshell, with the addition of typical NYC pomposity. And some links below the fold...

Back when I was in college I took a course in computer ethics. It was, of course, filled with dire predictions about how Republicans were going to strip away your digital rights (lol) but that had one bit I recall where they suggested that everyone use a specific phrase in all their emails. It was carefully crafted to use every trigger word the author could think of. Obviously, computer power has gone up and they'd be able to parse this sort of thing now, and it's the left that's stripping away your digital rights (so that's probably okay). Generation Baby is spot on, and barely touches the surface of what's been wrong with American adults for at least the last couple of generations. I've made mental notes for a long time at just how unbelievably childish adults have become. Just one glance at modern TV commercials should clue you in. They're nearly all geared toward the silly. Adults trying to be funny, in "funny" situations, looking like buffoons or acting childish. They make me harken back to what I saw as a kid on Saturday morning kid shows. But they're for adults now. It's just a general demise of adulthood, responsibility, rationality, duty, and it's been declining for a long time. Adults today, in America, are an utter embarrassment.

Willowed: I just opened a dispute with my credit card company over a small charge. The vendor apparently shipped the item, but FedEx has tried twice to deliver (they say) and report "Incorrect Street Address." When I called them, they said they can't update the record or give my instructions to the driver unless the vendor gives permission (?!). Vendor, Encompass Supply Chain Solutions, hasn't gotten back to me -- no pickup on the phone, and no response to my emails. So, dispute time.

"That's interesting, had no idea we had state police on the lookout for radioactive substances."
As citizens, we typically have absolutely no idea what systems are in place and used to search for or seek out things or individuals along our highways and by-ways, or just simple normal life. Radiation detectors at truck stops and choke points are probably very common. License Plate readers at tolls and major tunnel entrances are common along the I-95 corridor as well. I would suspect that if you own an EZ-Pass, or some other form of RFID based toll payment system, that there are locations on our highways that ping and record the movement of your devise, besides the normal toll paying process. “Step two: stay inside. Shut all doors and windows. Have a basement? Head there. If you don’t have one, get as far into the middle of the building as possible,” she continues. “If you were outside after the blast, get clean immediately. Remove and bag all outer clothing to keep radioactive dust or ash away from your body.”
++++ Actually, this is solid advice - and we've known it since the 40s. The premise of the PSA is stupid - there is little time to react when you see the flash, and if you're not in a building already then you're not going to have time to get to one. Get away from glass and under something solid. Turns out "duck and cover" wasn't actually dumb, it was good advice. If you're in the impact zone then there's no saving you - but if you're not, you're more likely to die from flying debris than anything else. Fallout is a problem for 30 minutes from now. Protecting yourself from high-speed shrapnel is a problem for right GD now. Whatever you do, don't gawp out the window to look for the source of the flash. Take cover as soon as you the flash. At worst, you look like a fool who slid under a table for no reason. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 13, 2022 08:06 AM (WWh8n) 158

The NY nuclear attack PSA only raises one question for me: why now? This is common civil defense stuff that we used to teach actively and then stopped working on after the USSR fell. Granted, that means we now have an entire generation (a bit more than one) who has never had this information and it has thus been lost, but the timing is weird.

Oberlin missed it's last appeal date with Ohio Supreme Court.
The bond (for the entire amount) has been, for lack of the correct term, called due. The Olsen's filed to get the bond money released/paid. Now Oberlin and Zurich are trying to get the Ohio Supreme to extend their appeal date (because they screwed up and missed the date). Gibson is still trying to get the entire judgement award instead of the Ohio limit, but, that is after the bond money is surrendered to the Gibsons. If the past isn’t helpful, it must be ignored or rewritten. What this means is that leftists cannot learn from the past. All they can do, rather like cross a raging river on the backs of alligators, is just keep erasing their mistakes and assuring a beleaguered population that the newly rewritten past fully justifies their future plans. In my opinion, his appendix on "The Principles of Newspeak" was the most valuable part of the book. It lays out the premise for destroying the ability to express opinions quite nicely and it remains a haunting read to this day - especially when you consider how much the typical in-use vocabulary has shrunk over the past fifty or so years. OTOH, Twitter will likely have to actually be forthcoming about the bot issue during discovery.
Posted by: I used to have a different nic, member - Ashli Babbitt Society They will, but I suspect it's not a real issue. It's just an excuse for Musk to back out. It will muddy the litigation waters though. Hopefully not enough for the courts not to order performance/compensation. If Musk was smart (and he *is* smart, but prone to doing stupid shit when high), he would have hedged against a decline in the Twitter price (or at least the market) after he announced the offer. If he did, and is therefore still more-or-less whole even with the Twitter price decline, then he's looking to pocket his hedging gains and avoid the Twitter losses. Since he has nothing to lose by this strategy, he may as well pursue it. If he didn't hedge, then he stands to lose more than he gained from the sale of his Tesla stock if the Twitter sale is forced through, and that's gotta sting. So again, he would try to get out of it. I'm ambivalent about 'natural rights' being anything more than a useful legal construct, or fiction. I've spent quite a bit of time in locales where you have whatever 'rights' you're willing, and able, to kill to keep. I'm not sure that makes them 'natural' or not.
I have a 'natural right' to defend myself? Okay... sure, but it seems like if they were actually 'natural' other people would recognize them, which most human societies really do not. So, probably a useful fiction of America, but it's way better than other places, believe me. Posted by: LenNeal at July 13, 2022 08:23 AM (U11/V) 248

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at July 13, 2022 08:18 AM (1n+EO) ++++ It *might* be vacation homes, but I doubt it. When these schemes are floating in this country (usually places like Portland, where I see it come up fairly frequently), it's about regular apartments that are idle, not some rich guy's pied-à-terre or lake house. In other words, speculative holdings. If they do it, goodbye property market. Investors exit the market and the price support they offer vanishes. This might be a good thing on balance (housing prices will certainly decline, and the market will chill quickly) because more people can buy, but it's a destruction of property rights that will have dramatic - and almost certainly bad - long-term consequences. But it is in keeping (domestically, anyway) with the left's general thesis, which is that speculators destroy affordable housing and the problem of vagrancy is, as my lib friend in Portland puts it, a "houselessness" problem. "Shoulda gone to Boston or Baltimore that year."
Baltimore does indeed have its very own Fleet Week. And 'The Block' is within walking distance of the inner harbor. While in uniform, we once stood adjacent to an empty spot along the harbor wall where a small trail of bubble would occasionally rise to the surface. As folks would ask what we were doing, and what ship, etc, we told them that our sub was sitting on the bottom there, and came up every two hours for tours. Then we walked away. If in New Your during a nuclear attack, your best move is to place your head firmly between your thighs and kiss your unfortunate ass goodbye. Cause ain't nobody in New York capable of saving their own stupid ass, much less yourn.
Posted by: Xipe Totec at July 13, 2022 08:46 AM (QSjkU) ++++ I strongly suspect most of the death toll in a NYC nuclear hit will be post-blast. It always is (the shrapnel and debris problem) but it will be compounded in NYC because it's a tough place to evacuate. There are a lot of choke points and it's hard to get out. The population that survives will find it difficult to leave, and the problem will get worse and worse. Hell, it took me six hours to make it from Queens to northern New Jersey one Labor Day weekend, and that was just heavy vacation traffic. Even making the city exit-only and opening everything on both sides of the road and suspending tolls won't make *that* much of a difference - especially if a couple of bridges are gone or the approaches are destroyed. 247 I'm ambivalent about 'natural rights' being anything more than a useful legal construct, or fiction.
Posted by: LenNeal at July 13, 2022 08:23 AM (U11/V) It's philosophical and has to do with just cause. Just cause, or at least selective enmity, is very important for humans. It does not assert that it is impossible to violate these rights, it asserts that it is proper, and consequently not a war on society(unlike say shooting your neighbor for plunder or fun), to act in their defense. They are referred to as natural because of the logical process by which the set was derived. It is commonly expected among mankind that we will defend our own possessions, or our own lives, for instance(more complicated than this though). That might happen by Autumn because the credit cards will be maxed out, but not yet. The Fed balance sheet is - very slowly - declining. They haven't disclosed that they are draining assets and so it is probably natural roll-off, but that will accelerate and they can start selling for a month or two before anyone will notice (assuming they don't fudge the numbers and hide it). As I posted last night, the "progressives" of my age, used to *scorn* "Duck and Cover". ...
Posted by: Axeman at July 13, 2022 09:16 AM (krQz2) ++++ It was (and remains) deliberate misunderstanding of the purpose of "duck and cover." It isn't to help you if you're inside the blast radius. *Nothing* is helping your ass if you're at ground zero. But if you're outside the blast radius - especially a half mile or more - it might well keep you alive. Most people who died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki died due to flying debris (shrapnel), especially glass. This was compounded by people running to the window to see what that flash was, and being in the direct path of problem with no protection. We learned this by interviewing survivors. Those that hid survived a lot more often than those who went to see what that big flash of light was. The point of "duck and cover" is to train people to ignore that flash and get under something solid, and do it *fast* to hopefully avoid being killed by debris. Fallout is next hour's problem. Personally, I think that the infantile part of that article was the author telling other grown-ass people what they're allowed to enjoy and do as grown-ass adults. This trend needs to stop. If going to theme parks and watching comic book movies makes you happy, then go for it. I don't personally like either, but who am I to tell another human what they're allowed to enjoy before they are considered adults? Conservatives like to pretend they're all about personal freedom, and so am I, but there's too many people on the conservative side that do the "yeah, personal freedom but only if you use it exactly as I prescribe" and it's absolute horse shit. Posted by: Pork Chops & Bacons at July 13, 2022 09:31 AM (Qhnrt) ++++ Government debt. Right now, depending on security type, the US government is paying an average yield of between 0.7 and 3.1 percent. To service that is costing about $300 billion per year. Total revenue is around $4.05 trillion. So servicing interest as low as it has been is running at about 7.5% of total revenue. Doubling the interest rate means that servicing it it will hit around 15% of total revenue - but it gets worse because we don't have a balanced budget and we add *another* few hundred billion per year, assuming no more COVID spending or insane "infrastructure" bills. So the total debt load climbs as interest rates climb, and within a few years you're at a quarter of revenue going to interest payments and your ability to borrow more starts collapsing - which lands you in a full-blown fiscal crisis with existential implications. Oh, not to mention that revenues are going to decline, too, because the economy is entering what will likely be a long recession. That means even with stable interest rates, the debt costs rise a proportion of total revenue even without growth in the total debt. So it is a three-way problem: interest costs more (raises servicing costs), there is more debt because we don't have a balanced budget at that this point actually *can't* have a balanced budget because of mandatory entitlements (raises servicing costs), and revenues decline because of the recession (raises total proportion of revenue needed for servicing).

Doubling the interest rate means that servicing it it will hit around 15% of total revenue - but it gets worse because we don't have a balanced budget and we add *another* few hundred billion per year,
================= I think it will take some time for this impact to be fully felt, since (under Trump) the Treasury tried to stretch average duration. Neverthess, this is where we are headed and Social Security/Medicare/HHS welfare versus Defense spending is going to be a thing. Posted by: Huck Follywood, Break The Teachers Unions at July 13, 2022 09:40 AM (pQD4/) ++++ They might have to get very creative on maturity duration and other means. It can probably be done, but it would require some actual patriotism and they've poisoned the well very thoroughly in that regard. Something akin to a war bond drive would work if there was participation. Go hat in hand to the people and ask them to buy special 30-year bonds at low interest to bail out the government (refinance a big chunk of the debt) in exchange for balanced budgets, government shrinkage and accountability and a whole lot of dirty officials going to prison. The government cleans up its act and we band together to keep the system from failing. Something like that might work, but in a zero-trust environment where people would have no expectation that the government keeps it's word, nothing like that can ever possibly happen. I strongly suspect most of the death toll in a NYC nuclear hit will be post-blast. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at July 13, 2022 08:56 AM (WWh8n) I was there for th great blackout of 2003? I think? It was impossible to get off Manhattan. Took me many many hours (at least to get to Millburn NJ (a rich suburb). I hadn't moved to Hoboken yet which would have helped, but to even cross the river took hours upon hours. After a nuke attack, if outside take a shower? I would expect water mains to be broken. I guess use water in the toilet tank? With modern low-flow toilets, not much there...

And after a nuke attack, cell phones will be working? I'd expect cell towers to be down and their electronics fried, unless it was just a dirty bomb.

20 Police Use of 'Keyword Warrants' to Monitor Americans' Online Search Queries Comes Under Increasing Scrutiny
Mannix & Huck
How 'bout for starters we cut the fed budget by 6%, & freeze the budget thereafter. Any new spending to be offset by real revenue coming in. I'm not especially a Paulist, but Rand Paul has proposed this. A federal hiring freeze would go far toward reaching the 6% budget cut, i.e., through attrition. And reducing the number of fed employees by 6% would be painless for all Americans, including civil servants, if it were done via attrition & not reductions in force.
