Sumela Monestary, Turkey

Sumela Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Theotokos located at Karadağ (Greek: Sou Melá, meaning "Black Mountain")within the Pontic Mountains, in the Maška district of Trabzon Province in modern Turkey.

Nestled in a steep cliff at an altitude of about 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) facing the Altındere valley, it is a site of great historical and cultural significance, as well as a major tourist attraction within Altındere National Park. Due to an increase in rock falls, on 22 September 2015 the monastery was closed to the public for safety reasons for the duration of one year to resolve the problem; this was later extended to three years. It reopened to tourists 25 May 2019. The monastery is one of the most important historic and touristic venues in Trabzon.

The word "Sumela" comes from the Laz language which is of the Kartvelian language group and means means "trinity" in English.

Just wanted to get that all in there. Bigger picture of the monastery here.

Elephant nose-training.

Cute baby chimp looks like an old man.

He's officially not a donkey-brained individual.

Bird crossing.

Can't improve the caption -- Ocean's 1011 on a gold heist.

Very useful bird. Really "feathering its nest." Really making a nice "nest-egg" for itself.

Saving a turtle who got caught in the hot sun-baked sand.

How fire-fighters save people threatening to jump from high places. I like a job where you get to kick people and then get called a hero.

Right in the sushi rolls, as Steve Inman would say.

Dog guiding abandoned kitten to her new home. I mean, maybe. There's a guy recording all this so who knows what's really going on.

Giraffe smiles for the camera. Whoops: That was from a digital short.

Dogs are natural-born lifesavers. This might not always be to humans' liking.

71 That monastery reminded me of my Aunt's house, now her daughter's, in Rocca di Papa on Montecavo just outside Rome. It had an open air balcony suspended from the outer wall. Looking down was a sheer drop to the main road from Rome. I'm not sure the height but maybe 500 or more feet. The cars looked like toys. Last time I was there it had been enclosed and converted into a bathroom - very cold in winter.

282 Far as I can tell they don't subsidize insurance for that.

*

Yeah, they don't so much subsidize as "pay for everything after people decided not to get insurance and something bad happens."

There are some really nice new 3000 square foot houses in Alabama where single wide trailers used to sit until a bad storm a few years ago. They hit the lottery, though, while their neighbor directly beside them (who didn't lose a trailer home) is still living in the same run down singlewide that they were living in prior to their winnings.

I get it but at least understand he's only running as an R because that's unfortunately the only realistic way to win. I mean if anyone could successfully do a third party run at this point I would guess it's him but why do a third party when you could do what *they* do and wear all their shit as a skinsuit?

There are an unfortunate number of people who only understand R vs D. And anything new will be slandered badly like the Tea Party was, and easily forbidden from things the same way Trump and conservatives have already been shut out of everyday life. Plus an R and a D could conceivably use a pincer movement to strangle him.

Strategy 101, why give yourself a hard time unnecessarily? And why give them an extra weapon when you could otherwise use 150 years of cachet?

Well, if the government is subsidizing flood insurance, they sure aren't helping all that much.

My area was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy. Those houses that sustained a lot of damage were given the option to raise the houses at least five feet above grade at a cost of about $140,000 for an average size house, or pay upwards of $30,000/year flood insurance. Most of these areas had never sustained any flood damage before--Sandy was a 500 year event.

As if. PP doesn't do cancer screening, they don't do ultrasounds (except to guide the abortionist's tools), and they don't do planning, at all.

They count ever visit as 1, and every prescription as 1, and every phone call as 1, and every abortion as 1, so that's how they get the 5% number. It's horseshit, and based on $$, it's about 85%.

NFIP is sitting on a accumulated loss of about $20.5B. That seems to be about 2 years of total revenue for flood insurance as a whole, which if a business were making 10% profit would be 20 years of earnings (except as losses). Could be a lot more I suppose.

In total fairness to the county sheriffs, they're elected and weren't 100% onboard with covidian thuggery so they might well object, or at least have a sudden shortage of staff and resources when Tank wants them to do something. City PDs, on the other hand, are appointed by the system and thus guaranteed to be good bois who serve the hand that feeds.

367 It's been my experience that too many young men and women misunderstand "confidence" and exhibit/interpret it as something worse, and the young ladies aren't experienced enough to recognize the difference between a self-centered jerk (which certainly lends a type of confidence) vs. a nice guy with the same confidence in himself and his abilities who doesn't present it outwardly.

Putting enough solar on the house to run air con and such in Central Calif summer. Even if the never buy an erg from me, It becomes cost effective after 5 years, due to the HIGH cost of electricity here.

"Net metering" is a bit of a scam. What you or I take out of the grid is somewhat predictable. What you or I put back into the grid from our solar panels or wind turbine is entirely unpredictable. And if there are enough people out there with grid-tied local generators, a sudden calm, or a bank of cloud blocking off the Sun could cause a large sudden drop in generation, which the utility has to make up, suddenly. That means keeping "spinning reserves", so the coal is being burned, the turbines are running, but the generators are idle. So less of a saving than might otherwise be expected.
