Wednesday Morning Rant [Joe Mannix]

Promises Kept

As campaign season heats up and the battle lines become clearer, political advertising is going to start deluging the airwaves and internet soon. In some places, it's already begun. Commercials, billboards, yard signs, banner ads and more will once again become a continuous presence in daily life. Given the widespread use of the midterms as a referendum on the administration, the Biden Administration's performance is going to be front and center in the campaign.

So how is he doing? Well, if you ask me, he's doing pretty well indeed at holding up his campaign promises. He isn't batting 1.000, of course, but he's making real progress on his promised agenda. Here's a little scorecard on some of his key commitments.

Campaign promise: Get tough on Russia
And then you find out that everything is going on here about Russia is wanting to make sure that I do not get elected the next President of the United States because they know I know them, and they know me.

Big check on this one. Biden is so tough on Russia that Russia did something they didn't do under the last guy: invaded Ukraine. There's now a regional war into which we're pouring billions of dollars in cash and equipment, and have responded with economic sanctions resulting in serious global consequences for various commodities, namely wheat, energy and cooking oils all while Russia's currency continues to hold up. If this isn't keeping a promise, I don't know what is.

Campaign Promise: Open up immigration and sanctuary
You come to the United States and you make your case. That's how you seek asylum, based on the following premise, why I deserve it under American law.

Mission accomplished. We have "migrant caravans" again. We have vastly increasing numbers of Border Patrol "contacts" with illegal aliens. Catch-and-release is being restored. The prior administration's border and immigration policies have been shelved. The "Muslim Ban" on people from terrorist rogue states is gone. Biden's promise: Kept

Campaign promise: Attack the oil industry
I would transition from the oil industry. Yes.

Incomplete, but well underway. Have you seen the price of gas and diesel recently? You don't get that without visionary energy policy in the name of Mother Earth. Directly through policy and indirectly through alliances with capital market players, the Biden Administration is delivering on his promise to destroy the oil industry. Production is down, pipelines are suspended, refinery capacity is shrinking and despite all of this we're still shipping our oil to our allies in Europe who need it as a result of Biden's "tough on Russia" promise. Rome wasn't built in a day, but it can't be torn down in a day, either. I'm confident that by the end of his administration, even more progress will be made on this 'keystone' promise.

Campaign Promise: Deal with climate change
Climate change, climate warming, global warming is an existential threat to humanity. We have a moral obligation to deal with it.

Great progress is being made. We're back in the Paris Accords. The economy is sliding downhill - and what's better for the environment than reduced economic activity? Oil - already discussed - is long since on the outs. Hooray for the climate! We continue to concentrate our pollution offshore in places where poor people live, and we're doing our bit for the climate by pursuing penury at home and abroad via treaty! This isn't a full win, but boy are we on our way.
----
So how are we looking? Two solid wins and two great leaps of progress on four major campaign issues. Not a bad scorecard. Biden's administration is doing what Biden promised to do on the campaign trail, and they are wildly successful on multiple fronts. They're delivering the goods, and the consequences of these actions are the cost of the Biden Administration keeping its promises.

And if the GOP has any gumption in the slightest, they'll readily point out all of the campaign promises that this administration is keeping.

It's an idiosyncrasy of socialism. It's always deviant external forces or internal deviants wrecking the plan. Notice how only socialists have widespread problems of "wrecking" - of willful destruction by the populace, real or imagined?

At least the old kings had the decency to just blame external parties and go to war with them and chew up the peasants when things got bad. The new kings look inward first.

Assuming this is true, it proves, once again, that these people spend far too much time in DC and not nearly enough time at home.

While we have instantaneous communication, it serves no purpose if our representative "doesn't want to hear it".

Endorsed. I also think capturing the GOP is impossible and the party should be killed off, but I also understand that I am in a minority on that position. I also understand that killing off the GOP will also allow the current breakneck pace to continue because the sole function the of the GOP is to occasionally act as a retarder on the overall shared policy pursuits.

But I also think the federal government is unsalvageable at this point and the federal union is doomed one way or another - either because it becomes the sole source of power and dictator as the God-King state or through fracture or dissolution. I'm also a profound pessimist.

Yup. Nicotine isn't good for you. It's highly addictive and it causes high blood pressure. On balance, though, nicotine also isn't all that catastrophically bad for you. The real problem with cigarettes isn't the nicotine, it's all the other stuff. By reducing nicotine and thus increasing smoking, they will increase exposure to the actual harm done by smoking. Dear Senator Cornyn:

I am one of your constituents. After your recent comments about "not being bullied," I feel it necessary to remind you who you work for: Me and all the others that voted for you. We didn't elect you to be bullied and in turn, capitulate to Democrats. We elected you to DEFEAT the Democrats and their tyrannical agenda. We don't need you reaching across the aisle. We need you slapping that reach down and DEFEATING them. You find it alright to talk tough toward your constituents , but NOT the Democrats. WHY IS THAT, senator?

A lot of you know what they have in mind for this, but don't understand the scope. Look at my county as an example; the *county* funds a staff to review social media all day, every day, and do nothing but file red flags. This money is going to be used for that EVERYWHERE. We laugh now, but I'm wondering why the Feds are going after Gillum now, instead of when Trump was POTUS. I think the answer is in this quote from the CBS report:

"The indictment alleges that between 2016 and 2019, Gillum and co-defendant Sharon Janet Lettman-Hicks conspired to commit wire fraud, by unlawfully soliciting and obtaining funds from various entities and individuals through false and fraudulent promises and representations that the funds would be used for a legitimate purpose."

If the J6 Committee is trying to say that Trump did something wrong by raising $250 million for ED2020 legal fees and not spending it, Gillum could be a predicate for charging Trump. I don't put anything past Garland's DOJ.

This is part of the aftershocks of Jan 6 that GOPe wants to secure their putrid hides. They know that the people on Jan 6 were unarmed and for the most part, aside from agents provocateurs, peaceful. The GOPe and their partners in crime fear that the next time will be different and they will embrace tyranny by the feds to protect themselves from retribution for their evil deeds. The FBI budget in 2020 was $9.31 billion. An extra $200 million amounts to an increase of 2.15% of the total organizational funding, all for an *optional* program.

What's interesting is on the non-payroll side. Payroll and "expenses" account for a whopping 99.5% of the FBI budget. It's almost all personnel and related costs (salaries, pensions, travel, vehicle fleet, etc.). This increase is only half payroll, so where is the other half going and what's it for? That $100 million is nearly double the $52 million they got in 2020 for construction, the biggest non-personnel line-item.

Japan and Taiwan have a lot of integration. Japanese industry has been withdrawing from China for the past several years, accelerating hard in 2020-2021 after the Japanese government started directly subsidizing Japanese firms to withdraw from the mainland. High-value R&D and precision manufacturing is largely returning to Japan and the lower-value high-volume manufacturing is moving to SE Asia (Vietnam) and India. The next PM is likely to be significantly more China-skeptical if not China-hostile. Japan has stated national interest in the maintenance of Taiwanese independence. A regional undercurrent in this is also Korea, which is less coupled to China than it has been in a long time, and where people are increasingly hostile to the CCP.

The great risk is that the Pacific Rim will align to Red China. It is looking a lot like it is moving the other direction - they are aligning to each other in opposition. These are major economies, major industrial powers and skilled military actors that may well act as a fly in the ointment for mainland China.

361 Southern states have a problem. Most of them have open primaries that allow Dems to cross over to vote in GOP primaries as a relic of the time when the GOP was desperate to get any votes from anyone. But, the GOP power structure in the South just loves open primaries as a way to get Dems to vote in leftists GOPe types like Lady Lindsay or Nikki. The only populists then are rural types in very red districts that have little or no power.

Essentially, the sons and daughters of the old Jim Crow Democrats became Republicans but continued the genteel corruption in return for cash by favoring 'bidness'. What has happened though, is that bidness corruption has become global via mega corporations and these global corporations want cheap labor, subsidies, and for the local pols to not bother their leftist managers with popular policies.

Southern Republicans, by and large are corrupticans that like now extinct Blue Dog Democrats, pose as conservative at home while voting for every thing that the leftist global class wants and killing any policies that favor the state's own citizenry.

391 The great risk is that the Pacific Rim will align to Red China. It is looking a lot like it is moving the other direction - they are aligning to each other in opposition. These are major economies, major industrial powers and skilled military actors that may well act as a fly in the ointment for mainland China.

Last weekend, 31 members of a white supremacist terrorist cell called the Patriot Front came together from 11 states to terrorize a Pride march in Idaho.

Luckily, a good citizen saw them loading up their U-Haul and reported it. Police stopped their truck before they reached the event and found dozens of members hiding in the back, dressed like a small army, holding weapons and covering their faces.

The 70's Republicans were largely transplants from the North and ran in suburban districts in the South. At that time, in the South, the Democrat party was more focused on local policies that the population wanted at the local level rather than tax cuts, etc. that were part of the national Republican policies. Fighting communism was not a Dem/Rep issue in Southern states at the time. Over time, those that would have been Democrats at the local level either switched parties during the 90's or pronounced themselves as Republicans all along. This happened at different speeds in different Southern states at the local level based on demographics and the increasing focus of the Dems on unpopular leftist social issues at the national level. Those that would have been S. Dems or later Blue Dogs became Republicans in name only.

Posted by: Romeo13 at June 22, 2022 12:03 PM (oHd/0)

The price of gasoline is only partially related to the price of crude; it is also heavily influenced by total demand and by logistics. California's biggest problem is that because they started a jihad against in state oil production decades ago (California could have been self sufficient) now the vast majority of California's oil supplies come from Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Columbia. So California pays what those sellers are charging.

I remember when driving through Central and SoCal there were oil pumps everywhere back in the 60's and 70's. Still a few here and there, but mostly long gone.

IIRC we have a $.35 tax on regular petrol (diesel is higher still) and that's not including the sales tax, which in my neck of the woods is around 10%. I remember somebody pointing out the tax is applied to the price post-tax, which wouldn't surprise me a bit. Newsom had said a few months ago that he'd push back the new tax increase in July, but then recently I read he's changed his mind on that. Sadly, my new digs are in a pretty swank part of CA, and gas is over $7/gal. My timing to bail on my current gig turned out to be the right move - or I'd have to increase prices as it took me all over the bay area. Nothing like spending $75 just to top off.

I have lived in the South all my life and been involved in politics for about as long. I believe you are misunderstanding what I am saying. The old line Jim Crow type Democrats remained so but had lost power to the new sleek seemingly moderate Democrats in the 70's. There were a few Republican Congress critters, from suburban districts, but rural areas still voted Dem for people like Sonny Montgomery, William Natcher, and even Nathan Deal. Same in state legislatures, there were a smattering of Republicans, largely urban or from the mountains in some states (TN, AR, and VA) but senators and governors were Dems.

During the 60's the South began to vote for Republicans as president but Dems down ballot. In part, there were few Republicans to vote for in those races. In the 70's and 80's, more Republicans were elected but the 90's and 00's ended the South as a Dem stronghold. GA was the last of the Southern states to elect a Republican post reconstruction as governor and that was in 2002.

606 591 I don't think this is correct. There's a huge amount of hedging done by oil companies and refineries. Maybe a lot of day to day movement is speculators, but I think most of the contracts are by the businesses.

Less than 5% of the WTI futures market is delivered.
Posted by: sniffybigtoe at June 22, 2022 12:31 PM (UuD2k)

In a technical sense since WTI is only one storage facility in Cushing. But the contracts are used to hedge physical delivery of similar grades.

607 Also a groomer getting the GOP nomination didn't help.

I still would have voted for Roy Moore over a Dem, but I'll never buy the narrative the guy was railroaded.

He admitted dating under 18 teens as a much older man on Hannity's show. That was his nail in the coffin for me.

How is it that hackers never seem to try to fuck with satellites? You'd think a 44 year old probe would be easy to hack. I sincerely hope they never do, but it seems like the kind of challenge they would find irresistible.

But the real question is, why the hell doesn't Trump get that? They betrayed him.

Objectively, your qualifications would touch other current elected officials and Turkey was not what it is today under Erdogan. Personally, I do not care whether he wins or loses and McCormick, the other potential candidate would vote probably about the same.

Essentially, the only GOP senator whose opinion matters in the Senate is boss bitch McConnell. Once you realize that he sells off his caucus's vote and controls roughly a quarter of all GOP senators via his different handouts of patronage. Then all becomes clear. He hates you, me, and any other impediment to crossing the aisles for grift. The Hill had an interesting article on the Gun Bill and who supported McConnell's cave. Every one of them had McConnell ties. The other 3/4 of the GOP Senate says nothing or covertly supports McConnell's uniparty grift operation.

615 proof of Fabrizio's involvement is seen in this rather long NBC article from June 1:

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna31186

"But a survey of 1,200 registered Florida voters conducted in mid-May by Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio and obtained by NBC News showed DeSantis earning 47 percent of the vote and his top Democratic rival, former Gov. Charlie Crist, earning 48 percent — essentially a tie when the poll’s margin of error of +/- 2.9 percent is factored in."

It appears to be a privately conducted poll, so how did NBC news get it unless it was intentionally sent to them? By Fabrizio himself? It's either him or his client, which was presumably Trump himself.

617 Seen on Insty: the Anglican archbishops of Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda sent a very polite letter to leadership in the UK telling them to go f*** themselves with this gay s***, and that they should try reading the Bible sometime. Beautiful.

They really pulled no punches. Basically told the head bishop to get bent. Given that Africa is the ONLY source of growth in the Episcopal Church, the HB might want to tread lightly.

Just a quick search on that interview, its full of cringe. I know things were different back then, but I have zero doubt the guy was a predator. But whatever, it cost him the election.

621 >>Wrong question. I'd honestly support a dead cat in that race. The GOP leadership has to go, they have failed.

No, absolutely the right question. Politics is often a binary choice. You don't get to pick some mythical character in every race, you get to choose from who is running.

And Trump didn't endorse him for Speaker. He endorsed him in his race in CA against 2 guys who got a combined 6,000 votes. It's up to the House members to choose the Speaker.

Trump tries to get more conservative members but sometimes your best play is to try and co-opt someone how is going to win no matter what you do. That's all he did.

This was an example of how Mitch rolls. He purposefully shivved Moore in the back just as he did for Chris McDaniel in Mississippi. He has a pattern of disloyalty to his own party and its voters.

Mitch and the local GOPe purposefully will encourage Dem votes in the GOP primary, spread dirt (see the Greitens hit from Karl Rove and co), and other such crap. Even McCain got a taste of it coming against the anointed GOP nominee GWB in South Carolina in the presidential primary with anonymous fliers about his adopted black child.

631 I don't remember Roy Moore being accused of dating pre-18-yr-olds. He was ~29 and the chick was 19. Full adult, and 10-year difference, which is darn near a perfect delta in many ways (50 year old dude with still hot 40 year old wife). Yeah, the case against Moore was bullshit, IMHO.

Is the new China/Russia partnership a "Gathering Storm" similar to Germany and Italy in the 1930s that Churchill called out and was ignored? Or is it something different? It feels like the sands of power are shifting, and Joey Soft Serve doesn't see it.

634 "The Biden administration signaled Tuesday that it will develop a proposed rule to establish a maximum nicotine level in cigarettes and other tobacco products that will essentially lower the amount of nicotine in products available in the US."

Tobacco seeds are cheap (and tiny lil suckers too). Order a turkish, a virginia and a kentucky. Keep them away from each so they don't cross pollinate. There is a tobacco leaf shredder at the same site.

Even if you don't smoke this makes a great barter item.

Way things are going I'd be looking into starting beekeeping, chickens, goats, garden and orchard for those who haven't done so already.
