Top Story

  • The controls for the underfloor heating work. That just leaves the oven, I think, as the only thing I haven't tested yet. Oh, and the pump for the water tank.

Temperatures hit zero this morning, but in C that's not all that cold. Here inside I was snug and warm.

  • There's a flaw with - not in, but with - browser extension wallets like Metamask that could let anyone with access to your computer steal everything. (Bleeping Computer)

When you set up Metamask, it gives you a twelve word password recovery phrase. You're supposed to keep that in a safe place, like, well, a safe.

Your browser though sees it as form data that might be lost if you accidentally close the tab, so it writes it safely to disk. Where anyone sharing your computer can find it.

Tech News

  • Video card prices - at least here in Australia - seem to all be below MSRP. Well, up to the RTX 3080 and RX 6800 anyway. The 3090 Ti is still crazy expensive.

The only reason not to buy one right now is new cards are on the way in the next few months. Probably.

  • Speaking of which: When AMD says something will ship "this Fall" they don't mean November 30. (Tom's Hardware)

The new Socket AM5 / Ryzen 7000 CPUs and motherboards are expected to be launched September 15.

  • Everything you never wanted to know about USB-C but were forced to ask. (Tech Powerup)

USB-C is now used by USB 3.0, USB 4.0, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4. Oh, and cheap USB-C charging cables (and some not-so-cheap ones) are often only USB 2.0.

This article goes over all the features supported by USB-C generally and how to know which ones actually work with your devices.

  • In this stunning exposé, BuzzFeed reveals that TikTok is owned by China. (BuzzFeed)

TikTok assured everyone that US user data could not be accessed by the Chinese staff. They lied.

  • Physicists have linked two time crystals into a single quantum system with two states. (Live Science)

The time crystals are formed by cooling helium-3 to within a gnat's whisker of absolute zero - which unlike 0C is in fact rather cold - and creating a standing magnetic wave, which because helium-3 at that temperature forms a Bose-Einstein condensate, a state of matter where the entire system shares a single quantum state - keeps going forever so long as you maintain the super-cooling.

In this experiment they built two of those, and then brought them together so that the two magnetic fields interfered with each other.

Time crystals generally are perpetual motion devices, just useless ones. They'll keep going forever, but you can only create them by pouring tons of energy into maintaining the specific conditions the require, and also if you look at them they immediately break.

I mean, literally. If you look at them they stop working.

Simple formula for converting C to F. F = 9/5C + 32.

Now, 9/5 = 18/10 = 1.28 or 2*(.90). Or twice minus ten percent.

So, you have a number in C, you double it, the subtract off 10 percent, and add 32.

Example, 100C. Double it 200. Subtract 10 percent = 180. Add 32. 212. 100C = 212F.

Double it: -80

Take off 10%: -72

Add 32: -40

There are four main temperature scaled, Fahrenheit, Celsius, Rankine, and Kelvin.

Rankine is just Fahrenheit zeroed at absolute zero, rather than 0F (dry ice temp I think, I forget, coldest thing they could easily achieve in the lab at the time).

Kelvin is just Celsius zeroed at absolute zero. Well, Kelvin is an absolute temperature scale. As of 2019, it's defined entirely in terms of the SI second. WTF, you might ask. Now, as of 2019 revisions, the only arbitrary SI unit is the second. The Kelvin is now defined by fixing Boltzmann's constant to an exact value. The Kelvin follows from the others.

15 Interesting that the universe has a minimum temperature but there is no maximum theoretically, the limit being a source of energy to raise the temperature to a particular value. I suspect that there is some limit though we don't know about it.

Posted by: Ciampino at June 18, 2022 04:44 AM (qfLjt)

16

It is theoretically possible to have no arbitrary units at all. You simply define the physical constants to some value you like, and let the units be what they must.

The problem with this is the precision of your measuring equipment. Only now, is the tech capable of doing this. The kilogram used to be defined as this master chunk of metal in Paris. That chunk of metal was losing mass, due to oxidation.

Well, as of 2019, they simple fixed Planck's constant to be a defined value, and the kilogram is then determined in terms of the meter and the second. The meter is, and has been for decades, defined by defining the speed of light to be a fixed value.

The hold up in completing the circle is the gravitational constant, G. We cannot measured that with enough precision. So, we still need one arbitrary unit, and that is the second.

At this point, in the SI system, everything depends on the second now. Even the electrical units and temperature all are defined by fixing fundamental constants, with one arbitrary unit. The second.

Negative Kelvin temperature is possible, and systems have be created in the lab with negative absolute temperature.

WTF, you may ask. The way it works is that negative temperature is not "colder than cold", but actually "hotter than hot".

Look it up to see the details. A system at negative temperature cools down to even lower negative temperature. Basically negative temperature is hotter than infinite positive temperature.

It has to do with an energy state inversion. Again look it up. Either way absolute zero is unobtainable.

18 My new HP laptop arrived yesterday, just in time for today's 9+ hours of no power after an early (6AM) storm. It's nice, very similar to the one with broken hinges, except this one has a 1 TB drive (as the old one) plus a 125 GB SSD. 17" screen and backlit KBoard. It only has 2 USB ports instead of 3 which I find annoying as I missed that in the specs. One improvement is the power socket on the right instead of left. Personally I preferred everything hanging out the back, away from armrests and cats. The old one has a DVD drive but alas none here.

Now, most normal systems, an infinite positive temperature would mean infinite internal energy. But there are some quantum tricks, where you can create a system with only a finite number of such positive energy states.

To get to negative temperature, you get that system in a state where there are more higher energy state occupied than lower. This an inversion of the normal energy distribution, and this is negative temperature.

A simple way to see this is to consider the inverse of temperature 1/T. Here, absolute zero is infinity. And this forms an "affine infinity", a circle where positive and negative infinity meet.

Here, absolute zero is the unattainable infinity. But you can go through zero and go positive or negative.

But I can tell you that what you’re asserting here is inaccurate.”

I appreciate the author's honesty, but it might be that the inaccurate "something about the above information" (whatever that might mean) undermines the whole article!

Yes, negative absolute temperature is not negative energy, it's "simply" an inverted Boltzmann distribution, something that is only possible with those "weird quantum tricks".

Any normal system would require infinite energy to get to such an inversion.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 18, 2022 05:27 AM (Mzdiz)

36 > To get to negative temperature, you get that system in a state where there are more higher energy state occupied than lower. This an inversion of the normal energy distribution, and this is negative temperature.

Okay, after looking it up on Wikipedia, I think I begin to get it. There's no entropy whether everything is pegged to the lowest energy state, or to the highest. Entropy is maxed when everything is equally distributed across the energy states.

I've certainly seen that inverted U-curve in the "entropy vs. energy" graph they have in the examples section, albeit in the context of Shannon's information entropy in data compression.

I think I have a problem with my 2014-ish MacBook Air laptop. I bought a new real Apple power cord yesterday, as the cord was fraying and the laptop was not charging. It isn't showing any more and the battery charge is inching downward from 97 to 96 and 95 as I work. Battery issue?

Another alternative when one feels panic rising is just to say "Jesus, I trust in you" three times. The repetition allows you to focus on giving up whatever it is you are carrying.

BUT...it came with an extra dose of sensitivity training in a stifling high school auditorium and the next day I spent three hours standing in ranks while politicians flapped their gums. My calves are so sore. The problem is that my new boots are fully broken in.

These (for those keeping score) are the brown boots, which replaced the sage green boots, which replaced the tan books, which replaced the black shiny boots. I need inserts or something.

First off, we're talking National Guard, so this wasn't precision drill team stuff.

It was funny at the end, when we did the actual Pass in Review - marching past the viewing stand, doing an eyes right as the announcer identified our unit.

After whole battalions of Army troops filed past, you get this tiny detachment of three dozen airmen and the announcer (who was great) says "And representing both wings and our bases is this detachment from the Air National Guard." Yeah, 2,500 Airmen and only we showed up for this gig.

The crowd ate it up, lots of people laughing at our tiny contribution and of course we were the next to last unit to pass. The Army band should have done a sad trombone as we went by.

170 From the Catholic Loop:

SOTOMAYOR PRAISES THOMAS: Liberal Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Thursday told an audience about her deep respect for conservative Justice Clarence Thomas. "He is a man who cares deeply about the court as an institution," she said. Justice Thomas is the one justice in the building that literally knows every employee's name, every one of them. And not only does he know their names, he remembers their families' names and histories," she said, adding that he has sent her flowers when her family suffered a loss.

We do have an Honor Guard that is quite good. I was a member years ago, and learned the modified manual of arms they use with all the flourishes and stuff.

I did a couple of grave site ceremonies, firing the rifle. Also played "Taps." I actually played "Taps" for both of my grandfathers - my father's dad before I was in the service and my mother's dad as part of the Honor Guard.

People need to understand the truth of this - we are not up against institutions, but the spiritual powers who are using them. We are dealing with the Seen but also the Unseen, but too many people in the West have forgotten this. Something miraculous happens and their immediate default is to seek a "logical explanation." Hence the current worship of SCIENCE.

Correct. The regulation stride is 30 inches. In drum and bugle corps, they use a 22.5 inch stride. This gives you the 6 to 5 or 8 to 5 paces (that is the number of steps it takes to cover five yards on the football field).

The problem is of course that most people have a stride other than 30 inches, so you have to learn it, which takes a lot of time in a practice.

I can still do 8 to 5 strides if I concentrate and am within an inch of the ideal. Eight years of marching band will do that.

A lot of people struggle with implementing moral restraint. This has long been known, and Western civilization over the centuries created strong incentives for people to live a moral life even if they didn't agree with it.

There was always the sense that certain behaviors were so taboo that to even talk about them would lead to social ostracism. So even though people might get urges or be curious, acting upon this was rare because the resulting reaction would be so bad.

The internet allowed these freaks to not only find people with similar kinks, but to encourage ever more outlandish behavior. This acted as a force multiplier on the existing counter-culture emerging from the 60s, leading us to a place where "society" now views taking kids to church as harmful or dangerous but exposing them to grooming as exciting and healthy.

I checked out Partzilla for my Honda parts...no dice. Seems like every part I looked up was unavailable. The only parts they had were nuts, bolts and washers.
