Consumer Sentiment Hits Absolute Rock-Bottom All-Time Historic Low as The Economy Enters a Recession

Karine Jean-Pierre just told us that Biden had given us an "historic" economy.*

US Consumer Sentiment Slumps to Record Low on Rapid Inflation

US consumer sentiment plunged in early June to the lowest on record as soaring inflation continued to batter household finances.

The University of Michigan's preliminary June sentiment index fell to 50.2, from 58.4 in May, data released Friday showed. The figure was weaker than all estimates in a Bloomberg survey of economists which had a median forecast of 58.1.

consumerconfidence.jpg
This tracks perfectly with public confidence
in the pronouncements of Bill Kristol and David French

From John Sexton, a Financial Times survey of economists finds that a majority expect a recession next year.

Next year?

Okay sure whatever.

The US economy will tip into a recession next year, according to nearly 70 per cent of leading academic economists polled by the Financial Times...

Jay Powell, the Fed chair, has conceded that the central bank's efforts to moderate inflation may cause "some pain", leading to a "softish" landing that sees the unemployment rate rise "a few ticks".

But many of the economists polled are concerned about a more adverse outcome given the severity of the inflation situation and the fact that monetary policy will need to shift towards much tighter settings in short order to address it.

Yeah so we didn't have to wait until next year: At least according to the Atlanta Fed tracker, the economy is predicted to post a 0.0% growth rate in the second quarter, which, combined with the negative growth in the first quarter, means we're gone two quarters of zero or negative growth.

(Corrected: This is a predicted growth rate not a "posted" one as I said originally.)

We're in a recession.

Economists consider the economy to be in recession when there is zero or negative growth for two consecutive quarters or more, and that's what we’ve gotten in the first half of 2022 after a full year of Bidenomics has had its effects.

The economy shrank at an annual rate of 1.5% from January through March. That was revised downward from an original estimate of 1.4% shrinkage, and worse than the expected revision to 1.3%.

Also via Ed Driscoll at Instapundit, consumer spending fell 0.3% in May.

Americans trimmed their spending unexpectedly in May compared with a month before, underscoring how surging inflation on daily necessities like gas is causing them to be more cautious about buying discretionary items.

U.S. retail sales slipped 0.3% last month, down from a revised 0.7% increase in April, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.

Idiots kept saying "Sure inflation is through the roof but the US consumer is keeping the economy afloat!"

And how long did you expect that to go on for, Idiots, when people can barely afford food and gas and rent, and mortgage interest rates are about to shoot through the sky, and people's accumulated wealth in their home values is about to be slashed 15-20%?

Did you think they would keep spending forever, just to keep your senile president (allegedly) in the game?

I keep wanting to blaspheme. It's taking everything to avoid it.

Jiminy Crickets, we have absolutely the worst, stupidest, poorest-educated, most incompetent "Elite" class.

Biden's economic advisor, though, says, "Stop complaining, Rubez -- you've never had it better."

Pivot to Anger!

* My first use of "an historic." I'm glad you could be here for it.

93 Women elected Biden, or at least their majority support for Democrats made the biggest difference in the states that mattered most. Tucker should go back and interview those voters and ask them what they think about their decision now.

Believe it or not, I bet plenty of those voters think Biden is doing just fine. They simply do not connect their votes to the disaster we face.

Now we have crazy inflation and the cure is to raise interest rates which, of course, will bring on more inflation in the short term.

Wtf did he say? Translation: "You're fucked."

I actually am more optimistic than most. I think a significant portion of inflation and the downturn in the markets is driven by paranoia. There's a feeling that things are spiraling out of control and that begets over-reaction. I think a lot of the current malaise and pain can be cured simply by (i) end of Ukraine war and (ii) some semblance of a rational USA energy policy. No 1 will come eventually. No 2 may come in November.

190 I don't know what your problem is. Brandon says families have less debt and more saving since he took office.

I think there is a chance that might have been true, six months ago. People who couldn't leave their house to go anywhere because everything was shut down, had more money to pay bills and pay down debts. At least some people put those government "stimulus" checks in savings. At least some people just didn't pay rent because they could not be evicted. Those unemployment checks kept coming for over a year.

So yeah, I could buy that a few months back, that was true.

But that savings is gone now and the debts are piling up again.

My cousin just signed up for Medicare. She went off her company insurance to do it. This is what I believe she says the deal looks like:

Under her old plan she paid Blue Cross a little over $14,000 in annual premiums, had two (in and out of network) $4,000 deductibles and she paid required co-pays on a lot of services and medications. She says in 2021 she spent just over $21,000 in medical insurance related expenses.

Under Medicare she has a $450 payment due at sign up, related somehow to her income. She has annual premiums that will total about $2500. No deductibles and no co-pays. The only thing her old plan covered that her Medicare plan does not is Dental.

She thinks her annual costs will be $3,000 this year and less in ensuing years. The $18,000 difference is being paid by the taxpayers of the US. Every year, for as long as she survives. She is pretty excited.

366 I went to verify that comment about Volker. And I found this interesting bit in a Forbes article.

Among the hapless moments of the Carter presidency, the "malaise speech" of July 1979 sticks out. Oil prices were going up wildly, and Carter addressed the problem by telling the American people, in the speech, that the root of the problem was some kind of "crisis of confidence" domestically.

Whatever Carter was getting at, he kicked things up a notch the day after the speech. He called a Cabinet meeting and asked everyone to resign. He accepted several of the resignations, including that of the treasury secretary, Michael Blumenthal.

440 My cousin just signed up for Medicare.

523 I really resent people complaining because Medicare is cheaper than private insurance. When I was working and self employed I paid double Medicare taxes plus spent $1300/ mo for private insurance. Now that I'm retired, no longer have a paycheck every week, I earned that Medicare lower payment. I still have to pay a premium which is deducted from my social security which is based on past earnings which doesn't come close to the inflated paychecks of today.

That's the third significant recall by Ford that I know of. They're recalling ~50K Mach-Es because there's a battery issue that can cause the car to lose power during travel or cause it to stop turning on.
