Joe Biden Shut Domestic Oil Production Down. Now, With His Presidency Dying Faster Than His Dying Brain, He Begs US Companies to Start Drilling Again-- and Finds Out That Will Take Years.

Dear Diary: Today I found out it's a lot easier to shut down domestic oil production with a series of executive orders and policy directives than it is to put oil back in production again.

Via Twitchy, the Financial Times discovers that when Pop-Pop burned the US's domestic production capacity down, he didn't have a plan for starting it back up again.

He just thought that "green energy" would come on line because we needed it to.

As US petrol prices scale record highs, with the cost of a gallon of fuel surpassing $5 for the first time, Joe Biden has pleaded with the country’s oil producers to open the taps and stem the surge.

But those calls -- a stark departure for a president who vowed to crack down on fossil fuels -- have largely gone unheeded as the industry insists its drilling spree days are behind it.

"When the White House started calling around in a panic, they thought shale oil production could grow sharply in the near term -- like in a matter of months or quarters," said Bob McNally, head of consultancy Rapidan Energy.

"They were shocked to learn that that's like asking for blood from a stone. It's almost impossible."

Weird, it's almost as if it's much easier to damage a complicated thing like a highly interrelated economic system -- or a human body -- with a stupid and gross injury than it is to repair it!

Meanwhile, AAA found the national gas average over $5 by Saturday, I think.

aaagasaverage.jfif

And a Michigan county is no longer sending out squad cars to respond to most emergencies, because gas is too expensive. They're just dealing with them by... phone.

This is some real Mad Max shit right here.

If you didn't vote Biden, but thought Trump was just too icky to have back again - no mercy for you. You let your FEEEELZ overwhelm your political judgement. Sucks, doesn't it?

35 From what I understand, domestic production has been going up for about a year after the massive falloff from the covid shutdowns, but it's not enough to counter the faster increase in demand.

So, where Biden could help: increasing supply, he's not, and market forces are playing out with the limited supply that it can, and it's not working out well for the consumer.

36 I had a summer college job working in an aluminum reduction plant. (the 70's man!) Over time, costs became prohibitive and they started shutting down lines. Shutting down was pretty simple. Turn off the power. Lay off the workers.
Starting up again...cost about a million bucks (in then money) because every pot had to be jackhammered out and cleaned, new carbon posts set, lines run, etc. In all, about three months of work.

Assume for a moment that restarting could happen in a brief period. That the men, equipment, land, leases, transportation, manufacturing, etc. are all available on standby and ready to spring into action. Even if that were true, it still wouldn't happen. Put yourself in an oil producer's shoes.

Why would any sane producer lift a finger for them? They invest billions in return for a windfall profits tax or a congressional investigation? As of right now, companies that are at the mercy of governmental whims cannot afford to plan more than 4 years out. An incoming PDT administration, company can go all out. As soon as a new administration is in place, start pulling back. There's no other way for a company to rationally respond. Even then, there's no guarantee an incoming administration won't look for ways to attack a business that tried to thrive during a friendly administration.

We're still exporting this is one of the reasons - and it was an oversight from the start when we resumed oil exports - that diesel is so damned expensive here. It isn't just the leases. It's access to capital (thanks in part to ESG investing), it's environmental and other regulations, etc. It's a problem with many, many component parts.

Hey, moron, what was going on that would limit production. Oh yeah, you COVID idiots who shutdown the economy.

Jan. 2020 was 12.9Mb, Jan 2022 was 11.7Mb
Posted by: EPA at June 13, 2022 01:34 PM (EpDzw)

Exactly. Stevie is not an honest broker or he can’t read simple data and connect dots. Production level pre shutdown was close to 13,000b/day. With even greater potential for increased production and supply. While economic activity has increased post Covid nonsense, oil production has flatlined.

I am also convinced that, at the national level, nothing will change. The GOP will see that they got a yuge 'red wave' just by letting the Dems fuck up and by saying and promising nothing to the voters. They're not going to damage their re-election chances by agitating to release the J6 prisoners, or hold Stinkfinger to account, or tighten the border or. . .well, anything at all.

Any change has got to come from the local level and from governors like Heavy D. Massachusetts is a lost cause, even with $10 / gallon gas.

451 "Green energy" is yet another, amorphous phrase that the left believes in so intensely, but which means almost nothing at all.

If by "green energy" you mean wind and solar taking place of large generation plants: (a) it will never work, and (b) its even worse for the actual environment --solar is the least efficient land use per kilowatt of any type of power plant, and that's not even factoring in all the toxic metal mining and manufacture, and the (soon to be experienced) nightmare of disposing of these things. And wind is a true bird annihilator (and did anyone mention defacement of the land as well?).

So if by "green energy" you mean nuclear then yes, I'm all for it. But somehow I don't think that's where they're going with this.

That is complex thing indeed, and not so easy to do. In theory, you simply say the price of some P is the product of two factors, a monetary price level factor and the real price.

There are various methods to try to separate those two, but they're not perfect, and don't always means what you think they should mean.

I save every plastic water or sport's drink bottle, take the lable off, wash it out then fill it with tap water.

I don't actually drink tap water, I filter mine in the fridge and a zero water filter. However, if you use tap water it already has chlorine in it so I don't have to add it. I can filter as I use it.

499 Yeah, an alternative to Keystone was to just pipe it to BC, then sell it to Chyna.

Which, strategically for the US, is a disaster, since Alberta's oil is/was essentially locked in to being sold to the US. Apparently the Canucks had to sell it at below world rates to us

For the Canadians, a pipeline to the Pacific opens up their market and gets them better prices and flexibility. They can tell us to stick it.

The funny thing is the green retards in BC are opposing a pipeline to the coast. This info is a few years old. Not sure of the situation today.

You can fairly argue that it won't matter because of the uniparty. But if you argue that the Dems won't lose the midterms, you are going to be embarrassed.

The polling numbers for Dems are the worst I've ever seen, worse than 2010 and 1994. And unless something happens to reign in gas prices and inflation, it's going to get worse.
