The Morning Report - 6/13/22

demsamericakwai22.jpg

WEEKLY GRIM MILESTONE INDICATOR:

GASOLINE: $5.10 (Last Week: $4.85, 2018 Annual: $2.74)
DIESEL: $5.70 (Last Week: $5.54, 2018 Annual: $3.00)
MILK*: $4.20 (*May) (April: $4.01, 2018 Annual: $2.90)
MEAN TWEETS: n/a (Last Week: n/a, 2018: $ !%#*%!!!)

Good morning, kids. Start of a new week and as the Roe reversal watch continues, the role reversal/transmogrification of America from the land of the free and the home of the brave to the land of the freebie and the home of the enslaved continues across several simultaneous fronts. The sad but inescapable truth, at least to me, is that this country as we had imagined it ceases to exist, certainly as it was first envisioned by the Founders. 233 years later, we're just sort of going through the motions of regular order as it were, vis a vis political processes (corrupted though they are) as well as the bread and circuses far too many of our fellow citizens delude themselves with.

But with the price of everything going through the roof, that is if staples like baby food are even available from increasingly empty shelves, criminals and psychopaths roaming the streets at will and our children being turned into sex dolls and Frankenstein monsters, more and more people are suddenly coming to the realization that there are some things a lot more important than the size of Kim Kardashian's ass or whatever the hell else is in People Magazine. Rather ironic that the infamous phrase "the personal is political" as a rallying cry of late 60's radicals to destroy the nuclear family is today hitting people where they live, and causing a reaction, and not the one that was intended.

Case in point, a NYC mother who is shocked (shocked!) to discover that transvestites are in her child's classroom reading to her and her classmates, among other things.

In the month of May alone, the drag group received $46,000 from the city for their services, which includes performing in front of children as young as three years old, the New York Post reported.

The Post also reported that since January, the drag group has performed 49 times at 34 different city schools that range from elementary to high school.

“I can’t believe this. I am shocked,” Helen Qiu, a mom whose 11-year-old son attends a city public school, said. “I would be furious if he was exposed without my consent. This is not part of the curriculum.” Qiu is also a candidate for New York state’s assembly.

Now, to be fair to Helen Qiu, she is actually running on the Republican Party line from Manhattan, which means she has probably zero chance of winning. But that said, from this garbage to rat infestations of the four-legged and increasingly bipedal variety who are shoving people onto subway tracks among other things, the citizenry knows something is radically (pun intended) wrong. As we saw last week in San Francisco, a city that makes even Manhattan look like Goldwater country in comparison, citizens removed terrorist spawn Chesa Boudin from his position as DA. Yet, knowing something is wrong, even radically wrong, does not automatically mean voters are able to separate the person who is the focus of their ire from the real problem: the party and its policies/ideology. It's going to take a hell of a lot of people to have that Alec Guinness "what have I done" moment for things to really change. Will it be too late is the question.

Meanwhile, Liz-ard Cheney further debases herself in the wake of the J-6 kangaroo court that relatively speaking no one was watching.

It is no secret that Liz Cheney’s political career as an establishment Republican took a nosedive into oblivion when she sided with the Democrats in their January 6 witch hunt. Since then, her primary opponent, Harriet Hageman, has been trouncing Cheney in the polls and now leads by a whopping 30 points. After a dismal first hearing for the January 6 committee that pulled in just 19 million viewers across the United States, Liz Cheney has now subpoenaed former Donald Trump campaign manager William Stepien, who also just so happens to be Hageman’s campaign adviser.

As that travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham collapses in on itself, which does not mitigate the hardship those dragged in front of it have to endure, let alone the even greater suffering of the scores of political prisoners still languishing in the Garland Archipelago, you'll be happy to know that your Republican Party is standing athwart history, shouting "Stop — calling us racists!"

It was news that sent shudders through every person who supports the Second Amendment: Ten Republican senators have signed on to a “framework” that will allegedly improve gun safety in America. You can guess who these RINOs are—it’s the same bunch who will always agree to limit American rights to keep up with their friends on the Democrat side of the aisle. And while there are a couple of good ideas in the framework, the rest of it is either useless, harmful, and/or unconstitutional. . .

. . . Before America went crazy in 2020, around 40,000 people died annually from gunshots (the majority of which were and are suicides). Meanwhile, guns are used defensively between 500,000 and 3 million times a year. To the extent red flag laws run the risk of unconstitutionally interfering with this massive number of defensive uses, they shouldn’t be passed and, if passed, should be stricken.

But what about those RINOs who signed on to that red flag monstrosity? Here’s the list:

The group on the release includes Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas, Thom Tillis and Richard Burr of North Carolina, Roy Blunt of Missouri, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Rob Portman of Ohio, Mitt Romney of Utah and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

These senators are the old “white shoe” Republicans who believe in big government but want just a little less big government than the Democrats desire. Generally, they like cheap, illegal labor; big spending projects; gun control; and funding foreign wars (something Democrats like when there’s a Democrat in the White House but that RINOs always like). They’ll always quail if called “racist,” and try to be “hip” by jumping on board the Pride bandwagon. They have little sympathy for or interest in the lives and concerns of ordinary Americans because their entire world is bounded by Congress and the vicious game-playing that takes place there.

The GOP is worse than useless; they are, to greater or lesser extents, in bed with the Junta and participating in the dismantling of America. There are a few stalwarts who are not, and perhaps that group is growing. But along with being sabotaged and stabbed in the back by their alleged colleagues, they're participating in the illusion of regular order when, as I have asserted, ceased to be long ago and for sure on January 6th, 2021.

Politics and elections are one thing. But when the groceries run out and you're shivering in the dark, all of that goes right out the window. I pray it never comes to that kind of scenario. I fear that it just might.

Paradoxically, the more Trump continues to bark about the last election, the less likely he is to win the next one. His last, greatest, and noblest service to his country would be to announce, shortly after the mid-terms, that he will not be a candidate in '24, but will crisscross the land to campaign for the party, starting at the top with Florida governor Ron DeSantis,46, for president of the United States."

19 Good morning everyone. Thank you J.J.
Saint of the Day
St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231) was born in Lisbon, Portugal. At age 15 he relinquished a life of nobility, wealth, and chose instead to serve God with the Augustinians. Years later he witnessed the dead bodies of Franciscan friars who had been martyred by Muslims being carried through the town. Filled with renewed zeal to follow Christ after the example of these martyrs, St. Anthony joined the Franciscan order and traveled to Morocco to preach to the Moors. However, his poor health prevented his mission and he was forced to return to Italy. There he lived a largely quiet and secluded life. No one had any idea of St. Anthony's giftedness as a preacher until one day he was called upon to be a substitute preacher. He amazed everyone in attendance with his depth of knowledge and oratory skill. He became the foremost preacher of the Franciscans and was sent to preach against the heretics of the day. St. Anthony was known for his holiness and miracles, and was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1946. He is the patron saint of the elderly, fishermen, and the poor, and is renowned as the finder of lost articles.

20 The music is about to stop, folks. Small trucking companies are already shuttering because of fuel costs, medium ones will follow soon. If diesel really hits anywhere near $10/gal, freight simply won't move from one end of the country to the other.

It doesn't matter how much money the Fed prints. It doesn't matter how much of a boost is given to SNAP recipients or how high the threshold for income to get SNAP climbs. Money does you no good if there's nothing to buy.

Being able to say "I told you so" is such very small consolation for the coming conflagration.

Gird your loins and grab your marsmallows.

Yep.

They'll probably get it, too. But it'll be like plugging a dam with a cork; if it works at all it won't work for long. And the "big" trucking companies don't move enough freight to keep things going. There are too many small - medium outfits, not even thinking about Owner/Operators, and you can bet they won't be getting any such subsidy.

They came from something like 8 different states and all had ridiculous computer generated names that someone at FBI HQ thought were extra "White" - including someone labeled "Winston Durham" and "Garrick Garland" - yeah buddy.

A quick research by online sleuths uncovered "zero" information on any of the names listed, no weddings, no graduations from schools, no facebook, Gab, Truth Social, or twitter accounts, no arrests, and no friends for any of them in the states they are "from." It is estimated it cost the Feds some $3K a piece to get these clean cut fitness white models to this event from DC along with gear, brand new clothing, and fresh hair cuts...you'll be shocked also to know that they have all been released on bond. They will all disappear now and never go to trial.

55 Freight trains. Intermodal traffic will grind to a halt.

Even electric trains (which many are, now) use diesel to run their generators. And even if the trains keep running, that only helps once the stuff gets to the cities.

Farms, famously, are not typically inside cities.

The thing that drives me nuts is we could cut gas costs by 25% easy, simply by *announcing* that we were going to reinstate Trump-era energy policy. Everybody would drop their prices just to make it less likely that we would actually jump back in the market.

She asked me what the poison did (caused internal bleeding) and she said that would be too cruel. SUNY Fredonia teacher.

I guess referring to that set-up as deadly is the official approved wording as I see it over and over. While not technically wrong, it is very misleading and makes it sound as if dozens were killed. In reality Two cops died in a helicopter crash while monitoring the rally and had nothing to do with the protesters. One leftist protester killed by a young man trying to escalope a leftist mob attacking him in his car.

That was the extent of the deadly events. But, like Jan 6, repeat the lie enough times and it become history.

Regarding the GOP sellouts... this was known from the beginning. There are no surprises on that list. The GOP will deliberately tank their own chances of regaining control of congress. If they were to assume control they'd be responsible for the current state of affairs. The media will push that narrative harder than J6. The junta will push that narrative. The left will push that narrative.

They absolutely do not want that responsibility. It is not a "winning" move in their estimation.

We don't blame a snake for being a snake. It's just what he is.

Obviously we ain't happy about it, but we're stuck with him for a while. Texas has become reflexively Republican in the same way that New York and California are reflexively Democrat. In general, for state-wide elections (State offices + US Senator or POTUS) you just need an R in front of your name on the ballot and you'll win.

This is not as nice as you might think, because it means the Media goes all-in (until the General election, anyway) on the most Establishment, milquetoast, weenie Republican in any given race. Since our LIVs vote reflexively Republican, we get the most Establishment, milquetoast, weenie Republicans in any given cycle - as a rule.

It would be nice if we had a DeSantis or someone similar who could come in and shake up the State GOP, but we really don't. So we do get some good stuff (at the State level) done, but we're more or less stuck with John Cornyn as Senator for Life.

The Fed is indeed of that mind, and Treasury thinks it can cause demand destruction via low interest rates and increasing inflation (which also just happens to keep assets associated individuals own "valuable"). You can't shut down an economy and impose sanctions that hurt your own nation far worse than the "enemy" and not expect blowback. This could last decades.

People forget that part of the reason Trump was successful was BECAUSE OF the mean tweets.

I'll certainly vote for DeSantis, but I don't think he's a billionaire with no f*cks to give. I think the moment they begin destroying his family he'll ask "How do I make this stop? What do I do?"

145 Where's the valuation if a recession is priced in? 22,000 on the Dow?

If the Treasury stops artificially raising the monetary supply and the Fed keeps raising interest rates, I would not be surprised to see a sub-20k Dow before all is done. I don't know that we'll get back down to the 16 - 17k range, but I don't know that we won't, either.

And the NASDAQ is going to get crushed even worse - tech is, in most cases, almost purely discretionary and when people are having to choose between gas in the car and groceries on the table, I can guarantee you they aren't buying the newest MacBook or HP Spectre. Even if they do need a new computer, they'll be looking for budget-friendly options, not maximum power and "style."

H1N1 influenza virus reappeared circulating in humans in 1977, in the Soviet Union and China. Some virologists, including Joel Wertheim, Shanta Zimmer, and Donald Burke, have suggested the cause of the reappearance was a laboratory escape of a 1949-1950 virus, based on serologic and genetic testing.[12] The WHO conducted an investigation in 1978, after which they concluded the virus was likely not of laboratory origin.[13][14] Other virologists, such as Peter Palese and Chi-Ming Chu, have suggested the 1977 outbreak was the result of human challenge trials of a vaccine against the 1950 H1N1 virus.[15][16]

But the refrain in History classes for at least my entire life, and I'm pretty sure my own parents' (that puts in the 70+ year territory) has been that only Government can save us. 376 313 No matter how he tries to deflect and rationalize his incompetence and cowardice, this f*ck-up of a response was all on him.

Actually, it is all on the shooter. Legally, the cops have no duty to save lives.
_______________

I said the responsibility for the f*ck-up of the police response was on him. The shooter was not responsible for the cops' incompetent response to his shootings.

And while cops have no legal duty to save lives of people not in their custody, they do have a duty to act responsibly and with reasonable care when they choose to act, which they did not do here. These cops refused to act to rescue the kids themselves, and they also forcibly prevented parents who wanted to act from entering the school.

379 Traditionally the way you deal with organized crime is you arrest one of the smaller fries and work your way up.

Yeah I am confident they could wrap this up in that manner, if they could find a crime that was committed. It was definitely dereliction of duty and an utter failure to do their jobs, but I am not convinced that's something illegal.

Lawsuits should clear this up, with a good judge saying "your sovereign immunity does not cover this, and probably shouldn't most stuff"

But where do you find such a judge, and how do you stop a higher court from overturning it?

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Biden said Russia's war in Ukraine was the blame for the surge in the cost in the price of oil and gas.

'It's outrageous what the war in Ukraine is causing,' Biden said."

Then why aren't you working to end the war, Mr. Leader of the Most Powerful Country on Earth? This guy is disgusting. Biden is letting his ego destroy this country. He failed to stop Russia from invading Ukraine, and now he's not going to let them take and keep more Ukrainian territory. No matter what damage it causes to the USA.

Yeah, I know he was destroying our economy before February 24th. But he's accelerated the destruction by being stubborn and egotistical about Ukraine and Putin. Idiot Joe has been warning about food shortages. Yet he's doing nothing to prevent shortages from occurring, such as pressuring Ukraine to cede territory and end the war. Then relaxing sanctions on Russia, sanctions that are now hurting everyone else more than hurting Russia. Biden - /spit/.

Sure they lied, but it was in a way that all of them involved can walk it back and say "oh I misspoke, sorry." So Abbott is correct, they lied to him, but they did it in an unofficial way so no one can ever be charged with officially lying.

There is the practical and the romantic notion of why police exist. 433 The article is also grossly mistaken about how the voting works.

The first round is a classic jungle primary. There's no ranked choice in that. You can only vote for one, and the top four move on to the next round.

The second round is where ranked-choice comes in. Of the four finalists, you'll be able to rank them in order of preference.

This specific election is only to fill Don Young's remaining term (he died recently). There will be another "jungle primary followed by ranked-choice" election in the fall to choose a representative for the next regular term of Congress.

I believe all four of these have already filed for that as well.

There were 48 candidates in this special election, and 31 candidates (so far) for the regular one for the next session of Congress.

.. read "Warren v. District of Columbia[1] (444 A.2d. 1, D.C. Ct. of Ap. 1981)"

In separate cases, Carolyn Warren, Miriam Douglas, Joan Taliaferro, and Wilfred Nichol sued the District of Columbia and individual members of the Metropolitan Police Department for negligent failure to provide adequate police services. The trial judges held that the police were under no specific legal duty to provide protection to the individual plaintiffs and dismissed the complaints. In a 2–1 decision, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals determined that Warren, Taliaferro, and Nichol were owed a special duty of care by the police department and reversed the trial court rulings. In a unanimous decision, the court also held that Douglas failed to fit within the class of persons to whom a special duty was owed and affirmed the trial court's dismissal of her complaint. The case was reheard by an en banc panel of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, and the defendant (District of Columbia) prevailed.

There were 48 candidates in this special election, and 31 candidates (so far) for the regular one for the next session of Congress.

449 In a 4–3 decision, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals affirmed the trial courts' dismissal of the complaints against the District of Columbia and individual members of the Metropolitan Police Department based on the public duty doctrine ruling that "the duty to provide public services is owed to the public at large, and, absent a special relationship between the police and an individual, no specific legal duty exists". The Court thus adopted the trial court's determination that no special relationship existed between the police and appellants, and therefore no specific legal duty existed between the police and the appellants.

To the extent that is accurate, it is simply a demonstration of why we need better, more moral, and more wise leadership. Because good leadership would direct police to protect the innocent, fight crime, and promote justice.

The leadership we have in most of the nation -- or the world -- is not that sort.

But make it personal and take it home, and you have a different story. Nobody stopped that shooter before he killed children because nobody in school was armed and the alleged safety officer was off getting donuts or meeting with his mistress.

528 I'm not convinced it will make the prices go down anyway, and neither are those analysts quoted.

If any prices go down, it will more likely because of demand destruction, not by any increase in refinery capacity. As the Chevron CEO noted, the former United States hasn't built a new refinery since the 1970s and will never build one again in the fUS.

In the meantime, refineries are closing down. I say go long on energy stocks that only do refining (not drilling, pipes or retail) their value will increase for as long as you are alive. Any drop will be temporary due to the aforementioned demand destruction.

When people talk about the costs of E85 and the resulting energy, they are talking about total production costs involved in the planting, growing, harvesting, refining and distribution. I'm sure one can also factor in lost opportunity costs, long term soil deterioration, aquifer destruction, etc. But just making E85 probably, at best, is break-even.

It's well known and established that ethanol is less energy dense than gasoline, much less than diesel. The only use it has is as an octane booster. E85 is nice for an old hot rod, where you aren't really concerned that your 8 mpg is now 6, but it certainly makes a big difference if your once a week fill up for commute is now once every 3-4 days.

+++++
Yep. And Nope. One gallon of E85 contains around 100MJ of energy. That's enough to lift 1 tonne (1 metric ton) to a height of 10km.

There's no way all that growing, harvesting, refining, distribution, drilling, etc comes close to that much work.

Think about it: if producing E85 was net negative, we'd be living on a very delicate balance in which the surplus energy from fuels with slightly positive-efficiency-to-extract were being burnt to power extraction of slightly negative efficiency fuels.

No doubt the "E" part of E85 is less efficient than the non-"E" part. But still very unlikely to be net negative.

You got several things wrong:
1) I never said I favor ethanol blends. I think they're idiotic.
2) That article is wrong. Ethanol production produces surplus energy. Nowhere near as much as gasoline, but a surplus nonetheless.

Right. And I think even if we take your numbers from 2001, you owe me $10.

At an 83% blend (17% ethanol), 1 gallon of E85 contains about 90,000 BTUs and ~ 9,000 (17% * 54,000) BTU deficit from the ethanol (circa 2001). So you lose about 10% of the energy. No way gasoline production is that marginally efficient to make the whole product net-negative.
