Inflation Rose 8.6% in May, The Highest Rate of Inflation In... Forty-One Years

Heather Long
@byHeatherLong

JUST IN: US inflation jumped to 8.6% (y/y) in May, the highest since 1981 and a new post-pandemic record.

Rising gas prices, food prices and shelter costs drove much of the May increase.

There's little sign of a slowdown. In May alone, inflation rose 1%

Not forty years now. Now it's forty one.

Pop-Pop's tearing up the old record book.

This is another "unexpectedly," which raises the question: Can we trust economic analysts during Democrat administrations?

The consumer price index rose 8.6% in May from a year ago, the highest increase since December 1981. Core inflation excluding food and energy rose 6%. Both were higher than expected.

Surging food, gas and energy prices all contributed to the gain, with fuel oil up 106.7% over the past year.

That's a big bite.

Shelter costs, which comprise about one-third of the CPI, rose at the fastest 12-month pace in 31 years.

The rise in inflation meant workers lost more ground in May, with real wages declining 0.6% from April and 3% on a 12-month basis.

Oh, and wages declined.

Those escalating prices meant workers took another pay cut during the month. Real wages when accounting for inflation fell 0.6% in April, even though average hourly earnings rose 0.3%, according to a separate BLS release. On a 12-month basis, real average hourly earnings were down 3%.

Finally, food costs climbed another 1.2% in May, bringing the year-over-year gain to 10.1%.

Didn't Pop-Pop claim this was the greatest economy since 1976 or something?

bidenpredictioneconomy.png

The markets are down as the endlessly-optimistic and monolithically Democrat morons of Wall Street begin to realize: Gee, this inflation isn't transitory like Janet Yellen said it would be.

Friday's numbers dented hopes that inflation may have peaked and adds to fears that the U.S. economy is nearing a recession.

The inflation report comes with the Federal Reserve in the early stages of a rate-hiking campaign to slow growth and bring down prices. May's report likely solidifies the likelihood of multiple 50 basis point interest rate increases ahead.

"Obviously, nothing is good in this report," said Julian Brigden, president of MI2 Partners, a global macroeconomic research firm. "There is nothing in there that's going to give the Fed any cheer.... I struggle to see how the Fed can back off."

The problem with you Filthy Populists is that you are insufficiently deferentially to "The Elite," who went to Good Colleges and therefore are Very Smart.

Inflation isn't just still present, and it's not just still rising -- it's accelerating.

The rate of inflation jumped 1% in May.

Unexpectedly!!!

Shadowstats uses the 1980 (I think) method of calculating inflation, you know, before it was changed to take our food and fuel, and inflation is at 17% under that rubric.

Posted by: alexthechick

According to shadowstats, using the 1980 inflation methodology of the US gubmint, consumer inflation is currently running about 17%.

Meanwhile, gas prices have hit an all-time high, and have crossed the $5 per gallon (nationally) barrier.

From WPTV:

GasBuddy announced Thursday morning that the national average price for one gallon of gas has reached $5, setting a new record in the U.S.

Meanwhile, AAA reports that the national average price sits at $4.97.

Another eerie Biden/Carter parallel -- Carter was also terrified by a bunny!

The Jimmy Carter rabbit incident, sensationalized as a "killer rabbit attack" by the press, also known as the "1979 Jimmy Carter rabbit incident", involved a swamp rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus) that swam toward then-U.S. President Jimmy Carter's fishing boat on April 20, 1979. The incident caught the imagination of the media after Carter's press secretary, Jody Powell, mentioned the event to a correspondent months later.

This is brutal and it isn't going to get better in the high-middle incomes. The working class will probably see something closer to keeping at zero real growth because they'll have to because they need every dime. But the high-middle is going to get squeezed.

Take my company for an example. It is a high-middle kind of place. The across-the-board baseline raise (the first time that's ever been done, by the way) has been set by the bean counters at 6%. Low performers are expected to get about 4%, and the managers will try to get their high performers to 8.5%, maybe 9% if you're top. Virtually nobody in this company is going to see their wages match official inflation after this year's pay raises go into effect, and a lot of people are going to lose significant ground. I would expect similar trends to play out across the entire income band.

We are in no man's land here with all the various contributors to the inflation. I doubt there's any precedent or model for what happens when the gov't pumps in multiple trillions of phony money over the course of several years, or how to reverse it. I think this has to just run its course. There's no quick fix or indeed any "fix."

By comparison, FJB has been occupying the White House for about 17 months and he is already matching peak Carter; he still has another 2 1/2 years to completely muck things up for the decade after he lands in a memory care. Also, the scope of the FJB damage eclipses anything Jimmy Carter cocked up. We aren't even close to the full extent of the economic chaos; we still have a devastating recession to go through (and we will be lucky if doesn't go all Defcon 1 and land us in a depression). As long as FJB is in office there is no bottom.

"DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's gross domestic product grew 9.9% in the first quarter, the fastest in a decade and more than a flash estimate last month of 9.6%, official data showed on Tuesday.

It was the fastest expansion since the third quarter of 2011 with the increase in oil production a key factor, said Monica Malik, chief economist at Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank.

"This growth is due to the high increase in oil activities by 20.3%," the General Authority for Statistics said"

212 More domestic oil and gas production is the only solution to our problem. Accomplishing this means more lease auctions, more pipeline approvals, more steel production, far less regulation and far more accommodation to the industry. The Biden Junta will never do these things, because it means abandoning their core ideological beliefs.

After the midterm shellacking, they might make some changes designed to try fooling people, maybe fire Deb Haaland and other cabinet terrorists, but actual real change will not come until Trump or DeSantis gets elected.

The most we can hope for is they stop destroying more of the country in the meantime but, personally, I don't see that happening. I don't think they can help themselves.

2) If they can just raise prices and get rich, why don't they do this all the time? What changed to make them do it this year?

Assume that at your burn rate you had 10 years' living expenses banked by December of 2020 and have suffered no investment losses.

As of June of 2022, you now have 9.01 years' living expenses banked based on the CPI-U all-items growth. An entire *year* of savings was destroyed in just 14 months, and it will keep accelerating.

It's stupid. Wealthy people are noticing it. It's huge. Wealthy people aren't being brutalized by it yet, that's all. And it's also to be expected.

Poor people spend all their money. They have to. They don't make very much and they still have to live. So when their money loses value, they get hit right in the dick immediately and have to start cutting. The low-middle become poor, the poor become very poor, the very poor become impoverished. That happens fairly quickly.

Richer people don't spend all of their money, because they have more of it. They can absorb the hit before they get dick-punched and have to start making meaningful cuts. But get dick-punched they will if it keep sup.

There's some of that - like, I suppose, momentum traders - who follow the leader and try not to be the last to bite, but the market movers KNOW the inflation isn't transitory (and other economic truths). That's not where their expertise lies. No, it's more understanding of what The Fed generally and Yellen specifically will DO and when. If they know Yellen is lying to carry the White House narrative, then the market is not their trigger. Their trigger is understanding when Yellen will direct The Fed to loosen or tighten the money supply.

The coffee certainly tastes like that is the case.

486 Those inflation numbers are a flat out cur dog lie.

It's MUCH higher than that. Case in pointe? A bucket of KFC chicken has DOUBLED in price in the last 2 years.... DOUBLED.

McDs? At least a 50% increase this year alone.

And don't get me started on Gas...

490 The funny thing is, Nationalizing oil companies wouldn't do anything at all about the price, or the availability. When 3rd world countries did it, it was about taking ownership of the fields inside their own countries that Oil companies claimed ownership of. But here, if you won't drill it doesn't matter what you "nationalize". The Feds already own a huge chunk of oilfields in Alaska, but they won't allow any drilling - so how does that help anyone?

493 "Shadowstats uses the 1980 (I think) method of calculating inflation, you know, before it was changed to take our food and fuel, and inflation is at 17% under that rubric. "

The method was not changed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports headline inflation (food and fuel included) and core inflation (not included). There is evolution in how the index is computed because people basket of purchases varies over time.

Mr. Shadowstats is a crank.

500 455 Guess what? Now I know you'll be shocked to hear this but Ukraine says more money is needed immediately to counter Russia.
_____________

Ukraine is in Europe, it should be their problem. Biden made it ours, apparently to cover for his and his crooked, meth-head son's vast corruption. The U.S. has already pissed away tens of billions in cash we don't have, plus tens of billions more in weapons we'll have to replace at higher prices, just to hide the Bidens' corruption.

Enough with this shit. Ukraine is not our ally, it is not in our backyard, we have no real strategic interests there, and it makes no sense for us to be funding yet another European war for cheap-ass European governments who don't want to spend their own money on this war in their own backyard.

504 Shadowstats is absolute garbage, he just makes up his own data to sell to doombuyers. His fake data has overall US prices TRIPLING in the 1990s.

The Fed changes to the inflation calculation in the 1980s do not allow them to substitute chicken, or even burgers, for steak. it allows them to substitute Rib-eye if Filet mignon prices skyrocket on a relative basis. Just like normal shoppers do.

It also replaced the prior rent calc with Owner's Equivalent Rent, which takes into account BOTH mortgage payments AND rent increases.

505 LOL. The Russian central bank is cutting interest rates, since the ruble is getting too strong versus the dollar.
