I think this is something. I'd love to do this. And open thread.

He also has a "nearby exploding volcano" effect but it's meh. The blizzard program is okay.

There's a community of DIY tiki bar builders.

The "HD video monitor porthole" trick seems popular.

But why not put in fake windows? I mean, the tiki bar isn't supposed to be underwater, is it? Put in fake windows and run some nice jungle scenery outside the "windows."

Or just put a poster film over a light panel.

People posting in "Tiki forums" about their tiki bars and builds.

From my very brief acquaintanceship with this topic, I see all of these tiki bars are descendants of the original bar Don the Beachcomber, build in LA in 1934, by a guy who filled the bar with bric-a-brac from his travels in the South Pacific and made drinks from cheap rum mixed with fruit juices. That was imitated by Trader Vic's in San Francisco and then you just couldn't shake a stick without hitting a tiki mask.

Since I'm over 29 I like the idea of everything on one floor. I'd like to have seen more functional design, eg instead of a "living room" and "dining room" maybe a larger pantry, a sun room on the south side for laundry and small plants, etc etc. Unless we revert to stone-age living I suspect we're going to see more fireplaces included in new houses in the future.

Chateau Lloyd has a floorplan that defies conventional descriptors. I'd tell you about it but you'd go mad.

Suffice to say that was built in the 70s and it's got some nice features for entertaining and then a separate master bedroom suite on its own floor.

'T' finished her journey today. They took her down to the operating room and recovered her organs a couple of hoursago.

Tragically there was too much anoxic / low circulation for her 19-year-old hard to be used, too damaged.

Even more tragically, as part of her work up we learned she was about 8 weeks pregnant.

It's funny you mention that - I'm intrigued by how many houses go out of their way to hide garage doors.

Typically they put them on the side of the house, so the front portion doesn't appear to have a garage at all. The side wall of the garage will have fake or even real windows, some quite elaborate, which match the windows on the other half of the house.

I guess this makes it look twice as large and you don't have the eyesore of a door. The amount of effort is fascinating to me.

Truly. I'm kind of a porch monkey. Soon as work is done, I head to the porch. Wave at the neighbors, several of whom are also on their porches, or puttering in their flowerbeds. I know there are lots of good reasons to live in more modern neighborhoods, but they depress me.

With some houses, I would feel silly sitting in front and waving to neighbors out walking their dogs. Those houses aren't designed for interacting with neighbors. Our new house has a glorious veranda where we go drink our coffee or iced tea and greet neighbors as they pass or our guests as they arrive.

I'm a huge tiki fan, I've been to dozens of tiki bars, I've compiled a compendium of hundreds of tiki recipes, make my own syrups, etc.

The reason I missed this, and I am not making this up: I had an unexpected "customer" in my own home tiki bar.

I'm currently having a bar built into our new house in Winston-Salem -- this thread has given me a few ideas.
