Top Gun: Maverick Has Record Second Weekend Hold

I tried to think of an airplane pun, like "Top Gun holds altitude," but decided that I don't want to be that guy.

Top Gun: Maverick posts the best hold of any movie making more than $100 million. Its weekend-to-weekend drop -- how much box office dropped from its first weekend to the next -- was only 29%. For comparison, Doctor Strange 2 dropped 68% from the first weekend to the second. A 55% drop would have been considered "excellent," the next article linked below states.

The Paramount and Skydance tentpole, starring Tom Cruise, is doing massive business in its second weekend. The sequel earned $90 million to boast the smallest decline ever -- 29 percent -- for a movie opening domestically to $100 million or more. Shrek 2, which launched to $108 million, fell 33 percent, according to Comscore.

On Sunday, Paramount's estimate was $86 million but better-than-expected traffic drove that number up.

Yeah, this story originally said the drop was 32% but now it's down to 29%.

Top Gun: Maverick has now earned $295.6 million through Sunday in North America and more than $552 million globally. Top Gun 2 continues to fly high overseas, where it is likewise holding strong. It earned another $81.7 million this weekend for a foreign tally of $257 million.

On Saturday, Top Gun: Maverick became Cruise’s top-grossing film domestically, surpassing 2005’s The War of the Worlds ($243.3 million), not adjusted for inflation. That’s after zooming past the first Top Gun ($180.3 million) and Cruise's Mission: Impossible films, including the last installment, Mission: Impossible -- Fallout ($220.2 million).

Internationally, Top Gun: Maverick is already well ahead of the $176 million earned by the first Top Gun, not adjusted for inflation. The U.K. leads with $39.7 million. However, it is far from matching many of the recent Mission: Impossible films at the foreign box office. One reason -- the sequel isn't getting a release in China or Russia.

Cruise repeatedly pushed back the release date so that he could open the movie in a post-covid environment. I'm sure he also refused requests -- and pleas -- to just release the movie on pay-per-view, on Paramount Plus. It paid off for him, though I imagine his company has had to pay a lot of interest on debt while the movie remained on the shelf.

Despite being a box-office draw for... 40 years or whatever, Tom Cruise doesn't have any billion dollar movies. Maverick might be his first.

Nothing short of astonishment swept across Hollywood over the June 3-5 weekend when Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick dropped a mere 29 percent from its Memorial Day launch thanks to spectacular word of mouth.

...

So what does this all mean? For the first time in his 40-decade career...

40-decade? Man, that Scientology is some powerful stuff.

...Tom Cruise, 59, has a movie that has a real shot at joining the billion-dollar club at the global box office. At the very least, it will ultimately become his highest-grossing film, not adjusted for inflation. (It already it is domestically.) And the $170 million film is already a profit maker for the studio, since the break-even was around $410 million to $420 million at the box office.

...

Box office sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Top Gun 2 is destined to gross north of $900 million globally, including $500 million or more in North America. They say the only reason it may not get to $1 billion is the absence of a China and Russia release.

BTW, there was some bad press for the movie years ago when promotional images for the movie showed Tom Cruise's Navy jacket prop with the Okinawa (IIRC) and Taiwan service patches digitally erased, so as not to upset China. Apparently those patches are visible in the actual movie.

One bad bit of press which I'm not sure is fair to attach to this particular film is Paramount Plus' sponsorship of drag events which target children. Tom Cruise has his own production company and usually a new corporation is created as the business which makes a movie; I'm not sure exactly what the studio does, but it's not hands-on as far as making the movie. I think the studio mostly does financing and "distribution," whatever that is.

Anyway, there's a difference between movies made by a studio and released through a studio.

I think I might see this tonight. It was recommended that it be seen on IMAX. I've never seen a movie in IMAX. Maybe I'll give this one a shot. (And to do that, I'll have to see it before the next Jurassic Park movie comes out on Friday.)

They make the deals with the theaters to receive the digital information that is the movie.

I mean...because film prints aren't really a thing in the US anymore, movie distributors are losing their level of importance.

I also imagine Paramount has a deal to distribute all Mission Impossible movies that dates back to the mid-90s. It was always supposed to be an action-adventure vehicle with potential for many sequels.

Ace: Distribution is literally that; renting the theater chain and making the reels that go in them. It's part of what is or was called "P & A", prints and advertising. The print refers to the 6 reels of film. Nowadays it's either digital or on some form of disc so those costs are way way down. Advertising on the other hand is another story.

The formula is that a film must recoup double to triple its production cost just break even.

China pretty much doesn't matter anymore, and Hollywood hasn't really realized it.

China has its own studios that produce material designed for Chinese audiences and regularly fills their own theaters with butts. Pretty much just the Fast and Furious movies are still popular in China. China has otherwise moved on.

So, Hollywood is still betting on the Chinese market to bail them out while continuing to intentionally poke the American market with a stick annoyingly.

Back home the local Cinemark is 16 screens. It's not uncommon for big tent pole films to be showing on literally half the screens.

Their movies are, from what I can tell, big and dumb too, just in their own idiom.

And yeah, there's a reckoning coming for Hollywood studios. They spend too much and produce too little actual profit. Their streaming model is honestly not big enough to support them like they thought. They need the theaters as much as the theaters need them. Thor 4 will make a ton of money, but what else?

The story beyond the first paragraph of almost every box office story these days is that, sure, the #1 movie made a bunch, but the rest of the market sucks. The whole weekend is still down from 3 years ago. People are seeing the one thing, and nothing else.

162 This seems like the makings of a historical repeat.

Back in the Carter years, the US was in decline. Serious, ingrained pessimism ravaged the country. And then a rallying point came just before Reagan et al turned the nation around. The 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team. The Miracle on ice.

I think we might be witnessing the same thing with Top Gun. The country is again in significant decline and probably more consequential than in the Carter era. And with the backdrop of catastrophe everywhere, a media anomaly rises to give voice the the furious and disillusioned.

With the Red Wave coming (assuming the GOPe doesn't screw up like it so often does because they're mostly Statist, too), this might be the very tipping point for American insurgency. The Resurgence on Screen.

164 "I'm sure he also refused requests -- and pleas -- to just release the movie on pay-per-view, on Paramount Plus."

Having been one of the people to add to Cruise's hit numbers, this was not just a calculation based on revenue. The movie HAS TO be seen on a big screen. It's actually one of the few movies that I will probably see again in the theaters before it's retired.

The aerial sequences that drive the plot are absolutely stunning. Probably driven by Cruise's love of flying, they insisted on doing real action shots rather than CGI-ing the shit out of things, or using models, the way they did in the original.

As a guy who wanted to be a pilot, watching the planes' wings shake and stress under some of the maneuvers is aeroporn. Next viewing will be on ani max screen. The story ain't too bad, either. And the fact they gave China a big middle finger over the Taiwan patch -- and kissed away a big potential audience -- is a bonus.

165 I like Tom Cruise movies, war fighter movies, and action movies in general.
This one is quality. I've seen the movie twice now in an IMAX.

If you enjoyed the original, you'll probably think this one is better. If you enjoy fighter plane movies, your probably enjoy this one. If you enjoy Tom Cruise movies, you'll probably enjoy this one.

The flying scenes are spectacular. The story is on one level a continuation of Pete Mitchells career on carriers. :-) One another level it's the same story as the original.
It has some pretty good acting, even if the dialog has some weaknesses and ham-handed.

The first few scenes are totally new, fresh, and make for a good fast start to the movie.

174 I wasn't a fan of the original Top Gun. Saw it when it came out, didn't hate it but it just wasn't my thing. Heard good things about this new one, saw it and loved it. They handled the nostalgia perfectly, it was adventurous and even touching. Despite my opinions about the original, I know how iconic it was.

With this new one, that Euro-80s music at the very beginning and the credits, I felt like I was in the theater back in 19 and 86. Made me rethink the original and brought back some good memories of times back then.

Cruise is an interesting savant of sorts. When he needs to learn a particular skill for a movie, he goes out and fucking learns it. I'm sure there's some camera trickery involved sometimes, but most of the time he can really perform many of those skills. Or stunts, like hanging outside of a plane while it takes off.

Crouching Tiger is Taiwanese, actually, though it's based on a Chinese source.

I tried rewatching House of a Thousand Daggers again a little while back, and I barely got through it.

Hero is a plea to the Chinese to submit to the state, though it's still quite good.

Gad, can you imagine filling up a P-51?
Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing

Years ago, my supervisor was a guy who had flown P-51's over the Reich in WWII. And after his tour, came back to be an instructor.
The P-51 was a dream to fly, according to most of the pilots.
Planes that were hard to fly were the P-38 and P-47. They were both heavy (relatively) actually required a lot of strength from the pilot. My late Dad's best friend (who is also gone now) was checked out in P-38 (flew P-39's and P-63's in the Army Air Corp) and said it was like driving a truck; a heavy, hard to handle truck.

Posted by: ace at June 06, 2022 03:04 PM (AkbRF)

Same reason musicians need record companies, they know which palms to grease to get the music played on radio stations, late night tv shows, clubs, and inserted into tv shows/movies. Same thing happens with movies. The distributor greases palms to get the best theater in the multiplexes, books the actors on late night shows, sets up the interviews with entertainment outlets and local tv/radio stations, and sends out all the promotional materials for the movie to the theaters. Plus, they cut the merchandising deals for the movie with toy and apparel companies.

Pretty much the standard for getting a band like the Foo Fighters to appear on a late night tv show is that the show will also have to book 3-4 other shitty bands from that label for the label to book the Foo Fighters on it.

As others have said, pick a seat where the screen fills most of your field of vision. For our theater it was the row behind the walkway and handicap seats. Better to be a little further than closer if you're prone to motion sickness. Saw one of the LotR films in up-close IMAX and it was kinda miserable.

367 The actors for the movie had to go through Navy dunking and crash school. Lots of simulated ejections and how to escape a sinking fighter. Plus conditioning to survive the G forces they really were pulling.

There is a movie clip out there from the original Top Gun of Maverick and Goose being put in a high altitude chamber, once they reached 20,000 feet told to remove their masks to experience hypoxia. Watching Maverick and Goose try to play patty-cakes is funny.

And this is one of the great things about the new movie, it is not always 'oh my gawd we gotta be serious' there is some genuine humor in it.

Only thing I didn't like is it was 26 minutes (I timed it) between the movie's official start time and the point the movie actually started rolling; there were that many previews and ads to get through. Don't worry about getting to the theater a little late; it won't matter.

We just watched the original with my kids who had never seen it. I liked the original (they did too) but what's interesting is Tom Cruise was just not much of an actor back then and is easily the weakest part, but it's that role that made him the 80's James Dean.

479 Years ago, my supervisor was a guy who had flown P-51's over the Reich in WWII.

And the P-51 could fly through the arches of the Eifel Tower while engaged with a German ME-109.

About 10 years ago my sister had some of her neighbors over for Christmas. I found out that one of her neighbors, a retired accountant, was a P-51 pilot in Europe during WW2, turns out this CPA was the P-51 pilot that chased a German pilot through the arches of the Eifel Tower.

501 Of course the movie reviewers, when not making the story about themselves (THR's Kim Masters) need to review everything but the movie. Of course it's too rah rah America, so that's bad (but every other propiganda disguised as a movie is okay) and then they bring up Cruise's religion, which had problems, but that never matters when a movie has a ChiCom darling or a leftwing rapist.

Regarding Chi-Nah and films.... I think the ChiComs brought in the Hollywood films specifically to learn how to make their own films, so that they could kick H-wood out later on. H-wood, being a bunch of coke-head idiots didn't see this, and let themselves be seduced by the thought of a 1.4 BILLION PERSON MARKET!!!!

Never mind that most of that market is illiterate peasants with no electricity or running water, who live in mud huts and shit in the middle of the dirt road they live on. Oh, and the ones who actually can afford to buy movies mostly just buy pirated DVD/Bluray copies, produced by the same factories that produce them legitimately for the studios.

Given the huge scale of the Chinese population, the box office should be MUCH larger than the US box office, but it's consistently less. Still large, no doubt, but never really getting to the same level.

Like most action movies now that icky straight men might like, it started out as a Chinese co-production with Tencent. Tencent was forced to drop out after Xi contacted them and said he would not be paying for anything that glorifies the US military. At that point, Cruise was free to re-add the Taiwan and Japan flags and generally go for it.

562 It is a generally fun movie, but the real star the show is the F/A-18 being put through its paces. Some of the aerial footage is quite amazing. I have heard that the actors were subjected to up to 7-Gs. I liked the homage to the F-14 (the US Navy's fighter in the first Top Gun) at the end of this movie.

I think the movie is doing so well because it is a simple tale of good guys vs. bad guys, with the bureaucracy generally being in the way. There is no ambivalent moralizing.

565 Keanu Reeves still is the best at picking scripts / movies to do. Funny that both he and Cruise are not what you would call great actors.
Posted by: Anti doesn't matter at June 06, 2022 03:45 PM (TimFr)

Most actors really can't act. They simply play a certain type. Reeves and Cruise wisely pick movies that play to their strengths. They have made a few missteps. But in general they pick well.

566 Saw it this weekend. Really enjoyed the flying and was wondering if they (military pilots) really can do those maneuverers. Then just ran across a podcast of ex-Top Gun instructors and they said those maneuverers are done by your average navy pilot, not even top gun pilots.

569 Why are people so nasty about Tom Cruise's height?

Its not that we are mocking him for his height so much as mocking his movies and publicists for hiding how little he is.

You know the guy that played the French officer in Casablanca? Captain Renault? Incredible actor named Claud Raines. His problem was that he was itty too, even shorter than Bogart, who was no basketball player. It crippled his career because nobody wants a romantic lead the women tower over.

'zactly. The same dreamy wishcasting for access to the yuuuuuge Chinese market afflicts a lot of industries, not just movies. And it always ends up the same. The ChiComs steal or copy your products and then shut you out, preferably while also stealing your money as well.

On the other hand, the ChiComs do action films pretty well. Operation Red Sea is mostly decent, but suffers from the same sickness that some Japanese movies do, where the overall commander stands still in the headquarters issuing terse orders while looking like he has a saguro cactus stuffed up his butt.

The tank chase scene though... that shit frickin' rocks. Gotta give props to the ChiComs for that (its on yootoob).

I still have all the hair I started with, and can still wear shirts from 25-30 years ago -- which are the same size as I wore 40 years ago. Pants, no, not quite the same size, but close, and in fact I lost an inch or so last year when I cut out sugar and most junk food for quite a while.

My feet are bigger though. In '92 I wore size 9 cowboy boots comfortably. Now a 9 is impossibly tight and I have to wear a 10.
