The Morning Report - 6/6/22

benitocicilline.jpg

WEEKLY GRIM MILESTONE INDICATOR:

GASOLINE: $4.85 (Last Week: $4.619, 2018: $2.74)
DIESEL: $5.54 (Last Week: $5.613, 2018: $3.00)
MEAN TWEETS: n/a (Last Week: n/a, 2018: $ !%#*%!!!)

Good morning, kids. 78 years ago today, our GIs were getting cut to pieces on the beaches and landing grounds of Normandy, while two years earlier, our Navy stopped the Japanese cold at Midway in the decisive turning point of the Pacific campaign. They bled and died to liberate the world and preserve our freedom — all so that America itself could be destroyed from within by far too many of their progeny. I can't imagine what must be going through the minds of the dwindling number of nonagenarian veterans out there who made it "home alive in '45" to witness this nightmare. The bitter, tragic irony of it all is just unbearably painful to contemplate. And yet, here we are.

To unintentionally channel a fat, sausage-chewing Kraut of that era, today's top stories center around "guns and butter." Except in this instance, we're going to get neither. Inflation is out of control, wages stagnant and shelves are empty — all of it caused by the ideologically driven ineptitude of the junta in power and its implacable apparatchiks in the ever-expanding bureaucracy. At the same time carbon, the miracle element that fuels our way of life, our economic prosperity and wellbeing, has been sentenced to death, effectively sentencing us to death not long after.

So, with everyone screaming bloody murder at them to do something, and facing an electoral bloodbath come November and quite probably two years from now, something is exactly what they're going to do.

Rep. Donald Beyer (D-Va.), who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee, is looking to put a 1,000% excise tax on AR-15-type rifles as a means of making them less affordable to the public.

“What it’s intended to do is provide another creative pathway to actually make some sensible gun control happen,” Beyer told Business Insider. “We think that a 1,000% fee on assault weapons is just the kind of restrictive measure that creates enough fiscal impact to qualify for reconciliation.”

With the affected guns ranging in price from $500 to $2000, the tax could add as much as $20,000 to the final sale price of the weapons. While bullets would not be taxed at the high rate, high-capacity magazines would be.

The details of the legislation are not yet final. Beyer insists that law enforcement agencies and the military would be exempt from the tax, as would existing owners. One can only imagine the surge in sales of the weapons should this legislation make it through. And while the proposal seems absurd on its face, that doesn’t mean it’s doomed to fail; Beyer is looking to use the reconciliation process to bypass a filibuster in the Senate.

"Filibuster in the Senate?" Pfft.

BRENNAN: So you can get four other Republicans to stand with you, the six who are negotiating?

TOOMEY: My hope is we’ll get a lot more than that. My hope is we’ll get at least half the Republican conference. You know that that’s, that should be the goal here. We’re going to have to be realistic about what can do that. Senator Murphy alluded to the idea that it’s not going to be everything. Certainly the Democrats would like. We’ll- we’ll see where it ends up.

BRENNAN: Is there a risk that the Republican Party becomes associated with gun violence, if you can’t get those votes?

TOOMEY: You know, look, I think the Republicans have been very consistently supporters have Second Second Amendment rights. Republican voters expect Republicans to defend the Second Amendment. I think there is a place to land that’s consistent with the Second Amendment, as I’ve been advocating for expanding background checks, by the way, I think encouraging states to have some kind of red flag laws could make sense as long as there’s adequate due process. I think there are school safety provisions, there are mental health issues that we could address. So there are things we could do that would be constructive, that are consistent with Republican values, and I’m hoping we’ll get there.

For those keeping score at home, that's Pat Toomey. A Republican, at least on paper. Meh, what's the use of even calling him a RINO when the word "Republican" has lost all of its meaning in terms of defining the core beliefs of a political party. Then again, it's the Democrats who define that word which has come to mean "racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted, Bible-thumping gun-nut who hates children and Mother Earth."

The last friggin' thing these fools should be doing is negotiating anything with these people. To do so is to accept their premises not just on this issue but on everything else. While the Democrats' incompetence as I stated above is driven by its ideology (and of course an insatiable will to power), the GOP's incompetence, if you will, is driven by wanting to be part of the club and, let's face it, a loathing of the very base that elects them. While you mull that over, dig this:

Democratic congressman David Cicilline told House Republicans they should “spare me the bullshit about Constitutional rights,” during a debate on gun control Thursday.

The Rhode Island representative refused to yield his time during the outburst, while discussing legislation related to “red flag” laws, that would allow the government and law enforcement to confiscate firearms from anyone deemed to be a danger to themselves or others.

Florida congressman Matt Gaetz attempted to insert an amendment to the legislation stating “Congress disfavors the enactment of laws that authorize a court to issue an extreme risk protection order, also known as Red Flag laws, in the States because such laws trample on an individual’s due process and Second Amendment rights.”

That prompted Cicilline to call the defense of Americans’ constitutional rights “bullshit."

Emphasis mine. That's not a psycho Maoist like Titty Caca Cortez or LoPecia Pressley. David Cicilline is an alleged "moderate" "mainstream" Democrat. Forgetting the fact that he's been in Congress since 1994, he's only a year younger than me. I know our educational system is merely a machine to crank out mind-numbed, illiterate robots eager to serve the State, but he came of age the same time I did. And we never learned to hate the Constitution. The young socialists are bad enough but people old enough to know better and who spout this crap are the ones you have to watch out for.

Matt Gaetz for sure can defend himself as well as defend our rights and the Constitution from sick deviants like this miserable worm Cicilline or the Bernie Bros. But Matt Gaetz is an outlier. We have a party of Toomeys.

When David Cicilline shrieks "Spare me the bullshit about Constitutional rights,” he makes the absolute unimpeachable case for why we have the Second Amendment in the first place. Remind me again what it was he swore on the Bible to preserve, protect and defend?

NOTE: The opinions expressed in the links may or may not reflect my own. I include them because of their relevance to the discussion of a particular issue.

7 Democrats are above the law, even terrorist Democrats.

The plea deal by the Justice Department is a breathtaking reduction in the charges and expected sentencing of the two lawyers.

Notably, Rahman and Mattis pleaded guilty last year to one count of possessing and making an explosive device, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Now, however, they will be allowed to withdraw the earlier plea and instead plead guilty to conspiring to assemble the Molotov cocktail...

This.

With the caveat that "common sense gun law" means "government paid vouchers for safety and basic use training" and "every male over the age of 18 is required to own, know how to maintain, and be proficient in the use of a modern lever action, bolt action, or semi-automatic rifle."

32 Thing to remember about Toomey - he's leaving in the fall, he's never going to run for election again, to anything. So he doesn't have to care about anything. Meanwhile, Chris Jacobs (R-NY) in the House was forced to announce his retirement one week after he voiced support for banning all "assault rifles". Don't think that no one else running for election hasn't noticed.

Pelosi's House will pass something ridiculous to make progs happy. The Senate will hold hearings and make proposals and maybe/maybe not pass something completely different, and in the end they'll recess for the election break and the whole process will break down and nothing will happen at all. That's the Updated Version of "what happens to a Bill in Congress".

A common theme, and an increasingly common theme since the start of COVID. The problem, you see, is that you Americans don't have an adequately powerful government and that's why the government's plans sometimes don't work well. Because Al Qaeda was *always* a bought and paid for subsidiary of the Pakistani Intelligence Service. That's why, when it fell apart, they tucked Bin Laden away less than a mile from the center of their operations, and why our forces had to attack him in secret without letting the Pakistani's know in advance.

The point of Al Qaeda was to cause enough trouble so that America would pump trillions of dollars into the region while the Pakistani's skimmed a lot of it off the top. The plan worked brilliantly. Those warning about "Al Qaeda" now are just trying to get the Band back together and bring the old grift machine back to life.

59 There is something that needs to become an actual political target: the despicable, sinister deceit known as "bipartisanship." This is the primary mechanism through which the Republicans provide the Democrats cover and throw them life lines. The "infrastructure" cash-grab last year was the "bipartisan infrastructure bill," for example. It's always this way, and the politicians continuously cast bipartisanship as a virtue.

It is not a virtue, it is a mechanism to absolve the evil party of guilt while ensuring that the stupid party lives up to its name. Bipartisanship can only result in a good outcome if both parties share core values and disagree on the specifics. That is not the situation in American politics. The two sides share nothing - no shared values, no shared beliefs, no shared philosophy, no shared principles. Despite this, sadly, the two *parties* share rather a lot.

Everything from the sanctimonious "Does Jesus care more about your right to own a gun or the death of a child!?" to the old dishonest "the founders didn't know about automatic weapons!" to the new dishonest "you need more than just an AR-15 to resist the government anyway!"

Interesting. For several generations, black culture such as it is has pressured kids who want to go to school and better themselves by portraying them as "acting white" "sellouts" and "race traitors."

78 The World Economic Forum article describes a dystopian nightmare. I was really interested in “ #3 Tracking Your Clothes”.

It’s all about not being able to own anything, All items are to be licensed by the corporations. You can’t give anything away to the poor - you licensed that shirt, you MUST recycle it at an approved retail outlet and can’t license new clothes until you turn in your expired items.

How about a car you license, but don’t own. It simply won’t take you anywhere until you renew your subscription or turn it in (mandatory) for the purchase of a new car,

81 Something I have not heard any politician propose is that juvenile criminal and mental health issues should not be sealed or wiped clean from your records simply because you turned 18. If the NICS process is going to work then it requires those records be submitted to it.

Yesterday's ONT highlighted the "Kia Boys" who are characterized by the community as feral animals and irredeemable sociopaths - most of them would benefit by current policy of erasing their criminal record upon reaching the age of majority.

83 Also, on the school thing, I love that their attempt to "equalize test scores" is to remove any penalty for doing things that lower test scores.

To do well on tests, you have to master the subject matter. But, to "equalize test scores" we're going to ignore when you skip class, don't do homework, or otherwise do things that will actively prevent you from mastering the material.

Of course, they really *aren't* so stupid as to believe this will work. It's simply the next step. The step after that is to "correct for socio-economic and ethnic status" when poor blacks start failing worse.

All in an attempt to keep blacks poor, uneducated, and reliant on Democrats so they won't dare vote for Republicans.

If the WEF get their way, it won't work out the way they think it will. They think they'll get an orderly society of drone slaves beneath a somewhat thick layer of engineers and technicians who are beneath a thin layer of rulers. That's the vision.

It won't work. They can try it, but it will lead to fracture - Mad Max winner-take-all outside the walls of the pod complexes, and dystopian misery within. Then the layer of engineers and technicians and the smarter and stronger of those who are ruling the wasteland will figure out the same thing the march counts did in Western and Central Europe. 111 To give you an idea of what we are up against, here is a data point...

I live in a town in Morris County, demographics are 85 pct white, 10 pct Asian, less than 3pct black, the rest are Hispanic.

This is a middle/upper middle class town.

The town review board approved an AIDs rehab clinic and methadone clinic whose main clientele are are from Newark NJ, which we the tax payers get to pay for their travel and pay for the service.

There is no reason for these centers to be in this county or town other than kickbacks and to stick it to the proles.

They are also forcing low-income housing in Morris County.

Again, this is an upper middle class town, there is no need for low-income housing, you can't afford to live here, move somewhere else.

Interesting analogy; I've always been fascinated by the history of the "Marcher Lords" on the border between medieval England and Wales. Basically Lords who had a nominal loyalty to the King, but who had the power to rule absolutely inside their own fiefdoms, to the point where even the King could not enter without their permission.

But this is totally consistent with the Cat Litter Box Philosophy that is the foundation of the Left.

Ron Klaine is reported to be obsessed with rising fuel prices so his remedy is to order gas stations to take down any signage that advertises the price of fuel.

Pretty much every labor, economic, crime, climate, etc. statistic is heavily altered to hide the malfeasance, incompetence, fraud and downright criminality of bureaucrats and government policy.

Basically Lords who had a nominal loyalty to the King, but who had the power to rule absolutely inside their own fiefdoms, to the point where even the King could not enter without their permission.

Oh, I agree.

I was just also pointing out that they *know* what the consequences of this policy shift will be. They know and those consequences are the actual goal.

If you educate poor Black and Latin-American students, they might find out a) that Education is a major component in the path out of poverty, b) that Democrats have been keeping them impoverished for decades, and c) that while they may never become millionaires, they can nevertheless have better, more secure lives than their parents if they follow some very simple steps.

If those poor Black and Latin-American students learned those things, they *might* realize that Republicans or *gasp* Libertarians are actually much better options for public office, as they are the ones more likely to leave you the F alone.

Yes. We're at the stage where legislatures know they're passing unconstitutional bills, but they also know that challenges won't get a hearing before the next election. So they make the activists and gun grabbing donors happy and can blame its loss on the courts later. Old old game, really.

The inflation of the period between the Gilded Age and World War I gave Americans a taste for peanut butter, pasta and stews and casseroles graced with but not dependent on meat. The 1970s brought us brown rice, granola, exciting vegetables like eggplant and zucchini, and every conceivable way to prepare a lentil. Freed from having meat in every meal and with a world of recipes at our fingertips, what will the delicious culinary legacy of this inflationary period be?

182 My biggest fear with the GOPe "negotiating" with the left on gun control legislation is this....

Since they are, in effect, the uniparty, they are going to push it through. They will have far more than the usual traitors (Romney, Collins, Murkowsky, etc.). Why? Because the GOPe firmly believes, and the polling agrees, that the GOPe will clean up this fall. They have enough of a margin to take a hit such as passing gun control legislation and still take over the House and Senate.

The NYT knows nothing of history *or* economics. It wasn't inflation that introduced the peanut into the American diet at large scale, it was tobacco. Peanuts, like soybeans, are good for the soil and were a rotation crop. We had a lot of the damn things and they were cheap because growing them was mandatory if you wanted to keep growing the money-making tobacco. Cheap, plentiful and permanent means you find a way to eat it.

But it was the Depression - a deflation, not an inflation - that saw the peanut become a staple in the American diet. Most peanut-based candy dates from the Depression as well, not the gilded age.

240 How was a vote triggered?
The rules stipulate that at least 15% of Conservative MPs must submit a letter of no confidence to Brady in order for a ballot to be held. With the Tories having 359 MPs currently, that meant at least 54 had to do this. [...]

How will Johnson’s fate be decided?
Via a simple secret ballot of MPs, taking place from 6pm to 8pm on Monday. Under the rules, to stay in office a leader must win at least 50%, plus one vote support from the parliamentary party. That equates to 180 votes for Johnson. [...]

What happens if Johnson loses?
If Johnson gets fewer than 180 votes then the party will choose a new leader and thus a new prime minister. Constitutionally the UK requires a prime minister in post at all times, meaning Johnson would be expected to continue in No 10 until a successor was picked. This process took two months when Johnson replaced May. [...] [andy: see sock link]

Basically. There were bouts of inflation, usually in specific asset classes. Classical bubbles were all over the place, and sometimes they spilled over (like the recession caused by the railroad bubble in the late 19th).

But inflation shouldn't happen in a normal, productive, technically advancing economy. Things get faster, easier, more efficient, more reliable. New products are also made. All of the productivity gains should result in mild price deflation, not inflation. Inflation is caused by theft.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 06, 2022 08:49 AM (l7p9i)

One of the attributes needed by Borzoi, as hunting dogs, is the ability to trot alongside the hunter and horse for long distances.

An efficient movement is important in this. A dog whose movement is jerky or pitty-pat will waste energy and tire quickly. A good balance between the front and rear is important as well. A dog reaches with its front and drives with its rear. A good Borzoi will reach from its shoulder, not from its elbow, as lamentably far too many do. In concert, the rear need to have the strength to push the dog forward, so strength behind is vital.

328 Washington state drivers don’t have to pull over for the cops anymore, so they aren’t. “Last July, a new law went into effect in Washington state that was described as ‘police reform.’ House Bill 1054 made significant changes in how the police are allowed to do their jobs. Police unions had been protesting the measure, saying that it would negatively impact their ability to control crime, but the state’s Democrats cheered the bill as a way to bring more ‘equity’ into the system. One of the changes put in place by the bill was a rule saying the police officers were no longer allowed to engage in high-speed chases except in very limited circumstances. In other words, if the cops see a driver doing something wrong and turn on their sirens and flashers but the motorist doesn’t pull over, there isn’t much they can do about it. To the great surprise of nobody with an IQ higher than tepid water, motorists have begun ignoring the police in increasing numbers and simply refusing to pull over.”

And the finest naval fighting force in history, and some of the most brutal and effective land combat. Amphibious assault - the hardest of all operations - became routine. At the peak of USN efficacy, we could resupply a fleet carrier at sea in under four hours. The British, upon entering the theater (outside of Burma, Malaya and SE Asia) in 1945, found that they - the lords of the sea - couldn't keep up in any way. Above the sea, on the sea and under the sea, there has never been a navy like the US Pacific Fleet. Their brutal fighting is the only thing that saved Leyte Gulf after Halsey diverted to go chase ghosts. Those were task forces that fought like fleets.

361 I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The only way we beat back the size, scope and reach of the federal government is if the states push back.

They have to provoke a Constitutional crisis. They have to literally fight the feds and protect their citizens.

One state, all it has to do is pass a law: No state resources may be used to directly or indirectly enforce [red flag, Obamacare, etc.).Anyone who uses directly or indirectly state resources contrary to this law waives immunity and will be personally liable for any damages.

Driving on the roads is an indirect use of state resources ....

now again, this was the post-vaccine protocol so kind of specific to me? but I think the word is the same or a similar regimen will help with post-covid symptoms. and honestly, IVM and zinc/NAC will not hurt you regardless

Or look at the individual candidates and what they stand for and vote accordingly.

There is a pretty prominent fight going on in the Republican party today between the establishment candidates and those who have aligned with the Trump platform. It's not exactly a secret. Voting for the same old establishment GOP is a non-starter but there are candidates like Harriet Hageman in Wyoming running to replace Cheney.
