From the Interwebz:
"Made in 1923, ‘The Survivors’ is a disquieting drawing depicting the displacement of war. There is a beautiful symmetry to ‘The Survivors’, with the mother in the centre surrounded by eleven figures. Two elderly men cower in the left corner of the image, and opposite them two young men strain with their bandaged eyes, a hand outstretched to beg. Huddled beneath them are seven children, their small forms contrasting with the size of the mother and the men around them. These figures have a statue-like quality, with their expressive eyes and oversized hands reflecting Kollwitz as sculptor. The contrast of black and white is reminiscent of the light and dark (‘chiaroscuro’ of a Rembrandt or Caravaggio painting. Kolwitz’ harsh materials reflects the subject matter, matching the pain in the image with heavy grazes of charcoal." While we commonly call the NSDAP "Nazis," the Party itself, so far as I can determine, never used the term, preferring "The Party," "NSDAP," "National Socialists" or the abbreviation "Naso." Why? The term "Nazi" was first applied to Hitler's followers by Konrad Heiden, a German journalist and author of one of the earliest Hitler bios, Der Fuehrer. It means "fool" or "yokel" in Bavarian dialect, which Heiden thought most appropriate for the rabble-rousing anti-Semite. When Hitler came to power, Heiden fled, first to Switzerland, then to France and finally to the US, to return to Germany only in 1951. “Pfizer received initial FDA BLA license on 8/23/2021 for its COVID-19 vaccine for use in individuals 16 and older (COMIRNATY). At that time, the FDA published a BLA package insert that included the approved new COVID-19 vaccine tradename COMIRNATY and listed 2 new NDCs (0069-1000-03, 0069-1000-02) and images of labels with the new tradename. These NDCs will not be manufactured. Only NDCs for the subsequently BLA approved tris-sucrose formulation will be produced.”
The “silent” update, which was posted – unannounced – on the CDC’s website, comes after months of posturing by Pfizer and US public health officials, who all claimed the vaccine was “fully approved” and, therefore, you should take it. Posted by: SMOD at June 10, 2022 09:55 AM (RHGPo) 125

Carried over from the previous thread, the stats about the assassination poll.
While some say the inclination in younger generations toward approving assassinations proves they have little respect for human life, I can only speak for myself when I say it's absolutely the other way around. Whenever talk of the 2A starts, it's always in the context of defending ourselves from a tyrannical government. I respect the lives of everyday Americans far too much to prioritize a politician's life over that of those he would wish to enslave (or worse). No, I don't think assassinations are a good thing in any way, shape, or form. I can, however, say that there's a good chance we've reached our current status as a country because our ruling class feels far too comfortable. A phrase I first heard in 2016 "peaceful transition of power." It really struck me as odd when I heard it being used, mostly because I hadn't previously never considered America in that kind of framework, which seemed almost reminiscent of feudal lords or third world regimes. It was a stark contrast to "the outcome of the election", if only in imagery. It was foreshadowing, though. No one ever hinted at the idea of refusing to leave office from Carter to Reagan, Reagan to Bush, Bush to Clinton, Clinton to W., W to Obumner, that I can recall. Learning from the mistakes of others is so yesterday.
Most people act on faith, not logic. Sometimes the faith turns out good, sometimes the logic is flawed. But make no mistake, most people feel their way through life. NASA has announced the formation of a study team dedicated to UFOs—or unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), as they’ve been rebranded to shed some of their tin-foil-hat stigma. But don’t expect some sort of “X-Files” team seeking to prove the existence of extraterrestrials.
Starting this fall, the study will have researchers identify what UAP data already exists, determine how best to collect UAP data moving forward, and develop methods to study the nature of UAPs, for both scientific and aerospace defense reasons. The team will be led by astrophysicist David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation in New York City, alongside Daniel Evans, the assistant deputy associate administrator for research at NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. God help us if the "people" believe this crap.
Tell a lie enough times, and if nobody counters it, it becomes true all on its own. Why do you think aggressive managers call everyone together to spread a particular foul bullshit policy or obviously bogus decision ? To get everyone's input ? To ensure the message comes straight from the top ? Hell no !!! Its a challenge. If nobody pushes back, right then, the lie thus becomes true. Because nobody said otherwise. I did. Quite a while ago, but I still get information from the Federation and from other groups looking for members. In some, God is female, some ask you to put your pronouns on a name tag which they send in the mail. At least one Conservative group has a transvestite president, and local groups are developing renaming "rituals and have decided to let the teenagers "lead the way". It's really disheartening to read.

But I think it makes a lot of sense. The problem of course is that the current situation cries out for a complete rejection of progressive politics, because those politics go hand in hand with virulent anti-Semitism.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at June 10, 2022 10:40 AM (XIJ/X) Such things do move slowly sometimes, but it's apparent to me there's a polar shift in American politics, and not for the first time. Democrats for quite a long time WERE conservative, and republicans were progressive. The label, conservative is not static, and in a number of ways D is again quite conservative , and not at all progressive. I don't know what R is, but I don't think the conservative label fits anymore... not would it be useful if it did. Posted by: BurtTC at June 10, 2022 10:47 AM (yWc8f) 381

Arthur Laffer says, “This is not a recovery… Total employment today is 800,000 lower than it was in 2020… This is not even a catch-up of where we were before. If you take the trendline from February 2020 on up we’re 5 million jobs short from where we should be had we just been on that trendline. This is a catastrophic economy. Whoever wrote that piece for Biden in the Wall Street Journal doesn’t know straightup from siccum.”

Was it because of inflation the Japs spend "millions" of Yen on everyday items?
Or do they just like math? Posted by: Soothsayer at June 10, 2022 10:54 AM When we were stationed in Japan we had to live off base for almost a year waiting for Navy housing. There were no debit cards then we would have to go the CPO club on base cash a check for the rent and convert it into yen. Paid the landlady a big wad of cash every month. IIRC the rent was 100,000 yen at that point, but I could be wrong it has been some years. We would get about 400 yen to the dollar back then. Those Laffer comments are right on the point I like to whine about - well it's actually a correct observation that most seem to either not get or find too painful to consider.
The opportunity cost, in all likelihood, of removing Trump (and his policies, which is always the point, not the personalities) is already enormous, and it goes of course far beyond just top-line macroeconomic numbers. When Trump ill-advisedly (and I use that term carefully, you might say advisedly) went along with a "shut down" in a futile attempt to mange an already prevalent virus, the Fed (several branches but I think Atlanta is the main forecasting outfit) was re-checking some of their forecasts. Because they couldn't believe them. They were too good. Of course the "quality" of the numbers in the Trump economy was as important as the numbers. It wasn't a short-term bubble-ish thing, or a secular occasional technology-driven thing, like the late 90s. It was the breadth and depth and character of the growth, the manufacturing investment, repatriation of capital, etc. But anyway, bye bye. America wanted decline and idiocy, and it's getting it, good and hard. Posted by: rhomboid at June 10, 2022 11:15 AM (OTzUX) 511

345 "Jews don't survive well without a social commitment to pluralism of one sort or another. It's interesting to watch how that necessity plays out in different social/economic/historical contexts."
There's intrinsic tension between how much any social commitment to pluralism benefits natives versus how much it benefits outsiders. It's the same argument as open versus closed borders. The problem is, "diversity is our strength" is political sloganeering: you're not supposed to actually analyze social costs versus social benefits, lest you arrive at unapproved conclusions. Diaspora Jews have a historical pattern of touting pluralism as a higher good than their host societies' own prized virtues. (As have certain other segments of the population, who have achieved similar levels of antipathy.) But pluralism (or to put it another way, tolerance) is a slippery slope; if the pluralists aren't willing to defend hard backstops limiting what can be tolerated, the anti-pluralists will do it for them.
