This account, Project '44, features letters and accounts from the men of Normandy, with some illustrative video to accompany their words. I believe their letters are read by actors, because the audio quality is sometimes very high, and sometimes they sound like actors. But the accounts are real.

Pandamonium!

Older dog is very skeptical of new puppy, but the puppy gradually wears him down.

Are you a gray bush?

Who's in charge here?

ICYMI, this dog is floofy and huge.

The rabbit gods are kind today.

Playing catch-the-feather-on-the-stick with a cat. Except it's a lion. Really cool.

Some kind of raptor -- the account says it's a vulture; I don't know myself, and you know how bad I am at Bird Identification -- buzzes a paraglider and then decides, Hey, I think I'll just take a rest and ride your glider for a while if you don't mind. Another very gool one.

Pellican trying to eat a capybara. (He fails.)

Hero saves kid.

As you probably know, Biden failed to make any observance of D-Day for the second straight year in a row.

Here are some real presidents who did think it was worth commemorating:

7 That pic below of the two trannies kissing and the real woman holding a real child produced in her real womb solidified some thinking I've been doing about -
The weird compulsion of Men Dressed as Women Competing and Beating Real Women in Sports.

Mindthoughts follow:
We're told a lot that trannies aren't teh ghey. That photo gives lie to that claim. From here on out, I'm just going to assume that guys who dress as women are teh ghey.
Teh gheys(1-3% of the population) want to have sex with men.
Who do normal men (approx. 97-99% of the male population) want to have sex with in overwhelming numbers? Women.
Who must teh gheys see as their main competition for sex with men? Women.
How do men prove their superiority to their competition? Battle or sports.
In their insane, teh ghey minds, they are proving their superiority to women by beating them at sports. In their goofball, teh ghey world that demonstrates their superiority as sex partners.

Hey, you got insanity in my sexuality! Hey, you got sexuality in my insanity?
And now, you know. You're welcome.

Lawyers for Attorney General Letitia James said Graff's testimony "cast doubt on the completeness of Mr. Trump's affidavit," which stated his practice was to delegate document handling to his executive assistants. 42 Thanks for the D-Day pics, ace. As others are noting, the event was so crucial not just for its own sake, in terms of WWII, but from the perspective of history, as an awe-inspiring illustration of will and genius applied to a practical challenge.

BTW, I believe the vast bulk of still and moving image photography from that day was lost before the film was even developed. Combat Camera (think that's when it actually had that name) consolidated much of the film for one courier run to a ship. The bag was dropped overboard. Seriously.

51 Somewhat related to the cat playing cards, we have several card games where you have to place down a card based on a theme, and one player judges which best fits the theme. Unfortunately, not much fun playing with just 3 people. So we started setting a bobble-head on the table as a fourth "player". Their submission is chosen randomly.

It was somewhat surprising how often the bobble-head won.

I forget the exact name, but there are one or more very good "then and now" sites/channels, some on UToob, that do an amazing job of fading D-Day imagery into identically framed photos of the same places, present day. 86 That second photo is, I think, D+3 or 4. Note all those LSTs beached and disgorging vehicles and materiel. Many of those ships - which had only numbers, not names - were built in the MidWest. On rivers. America's heartland sprouted riverine shipyards, where the ships were launched sideways. Like so many other things in WWII, they were invented and mass produced in short order, and were critical. Many operations were changed or delayed, and there were fights between the Pacific and European theater commands, because there were never enough to go around. There was one still in service, I think with the Philippine Navy, as recently as a few years ago.

90 We haven't failed them.

*

We're allowing the same people who insisted that black people were livestock and it didn't matter if they lived or died to murder millions of their babies for their "healthcare." We're allowing American doctors to cut off the genitalia of healthy children or chemically castrate them. We shut down schools for a year and destroyed the academic gains of a generation or two, and when parents spoke up to say "Please stop" our government sent the FBI to investigate them.

Yeah, we failed. The problem was that we failed way back before most of us were even born. As another poster wisely pointed out, there are 50 to 100 people in key positions in government, and it doesn't matter who is elected. Government is going to continue according to plan.

118 ||A barrage balloon is a large uncrewed tethered balloon used to defend ground targets against aircraft attack, by raising aloft steel cables which pose a severe collision risk to aircraft, making the attacker's approach more difficult. Early barrage balloons were often spherical. The design of the kite balloon, having a shape and cable bridling which stabilise the balloon and reduce drag, meant that it could be operated with more wind than a spherical balloon. Some examples carried small explosive charges that would be pulled up against the aircraft to ensure its destruction. Barrage balloons are not practical against very high altitude flying aircraft, due to the weight of the long cable required.||

Apparently over-the-beach was planned for Operation Olympic, Kyushu, at least until Kagoshima could be taken. Not really many other good ports of any size in southern Kyushu at the time time.

That's nothing, one time Bill Mauldin got lost and eventually ended up being lead to a monastery where he was gifted two bottles of wine. One of his coworkers about freaked out because that monastery made Chartreuse which is a wine made from flowers. IE very rare and very expensive.

181 A Mulberry Harbor was constructed from pre-fab concrete blocks, towed across the Channel, and anchored to provide artificial harbors.

The storms destroyed one of them.
Posted by: Anna Puma

The one serving the American sector was put together fast, to get as much equipment ashore as possible.
The British one went more slowly, because they put all the links together that were supposed to join all the blocks.
When the storm of June 24 came (I think it was the 24th), the American Mulberry was wrecked, while the British Mulberry (they were designed and built by the Brits) lasted. But somebody wrote that getting one together right away helped immensely in getting stuff ashore.
My late uncle came ashore on D +3 or D +4.

186 ||Mulberry harbours were temporary portable harbours developed by the United Kingdom during the Second World War to facilitate the rapid offloading of cargo onto beaches during the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. After the Allies successfully held beachheads following D-Day, two prefabricated harbours were taken in sections across the English Channel from the UK with the invading army and assembled off Omaha Beach (Mulberry "A") and Gold Beach (Mulberry "B").

The Mulberry harbours were to be used until major French ports could be captured and brought back into use after repair of the inevitable sabotage by German defenders. The Mulberry B harbour at Gold Beach was used for 10 months after D-Day, and over 2.5 million men, 500,000 vehicles, and 4 million tons of supplies were landed before it was fully decommissioned. The still only partially-completed Mulberry A harbour at Omaha Beach was damaged on 19 June by a violent storm that suddenly arrived from the north-east. After three days the storm finally abated and damage was found to be so severe that the harbour had to be abandoned.||

200 NaCly, correct. I didn't put in that detail, but it turned out the Japanese had anticipated almost exactly every key aspect of the operation (not surprising, geography etc allowed fairly straightforward speculation).

And what was the HQ for the regional command responsible for the defense against the precisely anticipated Allied invasion?

Hiroshima. Much of the HQ staff was killed by the bombing, though the commander survived. That city likely was the most "military" of any Japanese city the day the bomb was dropped. This was not a part of the longer term process that led to special mission target selection, but that's how it worked out.

259 Everyone should recall and review Manchin's performance during that Trump SOTU. The one where he instinctively rose to applaud some Trump point that was not only of course excellent policy, but had some specific positive relevance to WV.

He glances over at Schumer and the leadership team, slows his clapping, stops, and awkwardly sits down.

It was, literally and with no exaggeration whatever, something out of a darkly comical Soviet anecdote. THIS is the level of individual now serving in national office.

309 The quick boiled down history of WW2 is that the aggressor nations tried to get away with a quick win before the much more powerful adversary nations could get wound up. If they didn't win by 41 or 42 it was just a matter of time after that. In no way belittling the valor of anyone that had to go finish the job. The pre-fab concrete breakwater caissons were only a part of a Mulberry harbor. And Germany ramping up the PR decrying all the war crimes FDR is committing to carry out an illegal war of aggression when Germany has nothing against America...

334 Red Army was in no condition to be anywhere west of the demarcation line in Poland for years after 1939. Not ready for prime time, and not close. The Red Army that stormed to Berlin didn't exist - in professionalism, organization, judgement, equipment, or personnel - until 1943.

335 Told You So

There is a web site that has it all. Somewhere.

We gave a lot of supplies, which enabled the Soviets to focus on weaponry (although we gave tanks and warplanes as well).

Our supplies of trucks, radios, and SPAM made it possible for the Soviets to reach Berlin.

343 The D-Day first wave ends up in a time warp and finds itself landing on the shores of the Potomac. They push inland and take DC, thinking (irony) they are fighting the Nazis. Media covers it and the public is so impressed by the 1944 youth they support their actions. Maybe somehow Eisenhower is close to the time warp and ends up along with them and becomes President.

351 Because everyone forgot about it after Pearl Harbor you don't see this much, but remember that at the start of WW2 intercontinental warfare was not the accepted thing. Most of the public didn't like the Nazis and had sympathy for Britain but the general idea was we had a big Navy to keep us safe and it wasn't our business, it was THEIR business. It took the IJN attacking Pearl Harbor to get the public hyped. After that even if Dolfo hadn't done it, we would of just gone ahead and openly got in and the public wouldn't have objected much.

As I see it, yeah. Without that, the USSR has a vast, immobile force. Exactly the kind of problem the Reich can solve - as long as Hitler exercises patience. No small thing for him.

A Mulberry Harbor was constructed from pre-fab concrete blocks, towed across the Channel, and anchored to provide artificial harbors.

My Marine saw the album for the first time last year when he was home. He took a couple hours to go through the album. Very quiet.
