The Daily Beast Apologizes to the Computer Shop Owner Who Drew Attention to Hunter Biden's AIDS Laptop
Editor's note: an earlier version of this story mistakenly referred to Hunter Biden's laptop as "stolen." We have removed that word, and we apologize to Mr. Mac Isaac for the error.Well, that "error" has remained on the Daily Beast's site for a year and a half. But it's good that journalistic ethic, and only journalistic ethics, has finally stirred their consciences and compelled them to issue this correction and apology. Update: I'm getting word that it was not "journalistic ethics" that compelled this very late correction and apology, but rather Mac Isaac's multimillion dollar lawsuit against the Daily Beast (and CNN and others).
You know, the media is always claiming that competitors on the right should be deplatformed because they spread "disinformation." When it's pointed out that leftist media spreads more disinformation than anyone, they claim, "When we make errors, we promptly correct them and admit our mistakes." Except, of course: They don't. We have seen this again and again. The same media that claims "we promptly correct our mistakes and admit them" actually doubles and redoubles down on them harder than a political candidate in election season. And this raises a point I think it's time to start pressing: The media has special protections in terms of defamation as regards public figures. When they defame public figures, public figures can only recover against them if they are able to establish the media acted with actual malice. But the assumption underlying this Supreme Court invented rule -- the leftwing 70s court just made it up, to protect the New York Times -- was that the media was an honest broker keeping an eye on the politicians. The media is now just another group of politicians. If they were ever owed some kind of special immunity to defamation laws -- and I doubt they were -- they certainly do not deserve that protection when they drop any pretense of being disinterested, fair referees and just act as the most loathsome partisans. If the RNC does not have any special immunity to defamation suits, and it does not, neither should the media. And they are precisely the same kind of organization. If it seems like too much of a lift to overrule the Times v. Sullivan which invented the special media defamation protection rule -- Clarence Thomas thinks it should be overruled, but I don't think he's managed to convince any of his fellow justices -- then we should at least impose a qualifying test to enjoy its protections. A test like this: Do you in fact quickly and unambiguously admit errors and apologize for them? And do you admit those errors as regards class of persons you're accused of defaming? (That is, if you're being sued for defaming someone "on the conservative side" -- do you readily admit errors and issue retractions for "errors" made against conservatives, or not?) If you do not satisfy this test, you are not "real journalists," and you are not eligible for the protections conferred by Times v. Sullivan. By the way, Congress could in fact modify the Supreme Court's invented, fake rule in this way. While the Supreme Court would instantly strike down any law that purported to overthrow one of their rulings, they do not necessarily strike down laws that modify or add context to their rulings. Here, the context would be adding some specificity to what sorts of people would be eligible for special protections for defamation -- people who actually act with the journalistic ethic to print the truth and retract errors, not merely people whose bylines claim them to be "journalists." The Court just can't reject out-of-hand Congress' presumptuousness in attempting to make, you know, laws. Which the Constitution says Congress' power alone. The Court has to act with some degree of deference to the body constitutionally empowered to make legislation when it attempts to make legislation.

Disinformation is really a smaller part of this. They set the semantics, the language of the day ( a form of Newspeak) and establish just what is newsworthy, and what it not.
Just finished the thread about the Sussman acquittal. And some asserted that at least...the truth is out there.
But who read it, who knows it?
Most people have no idea who Michael Sussman is, what he did, why he lied (he did, and the FBI needed him to lie, as Garrett said in that thread).
A lot of people were "told" that the Hunter Biden laptop story was fake, and probably a Russian intelligence Op. And that's it. That's what people believe.
It's not about truth. It's about what people believe.

The problem is outlets like the NYT set narratives for a much wider audience and they knowingly print complete falsehoods. They are supposed to be a factual, new gathering organization not an opinion blog.
That's largely what the Sussmann trial was about, planting lies in supposed mainstream news organizations so that the public would see them as factual and not opinion.

It's also a mystery why Juneteenth is a national holiday at all, given that it celebrates a regional TX incident.
Of course, if we were really going to have a federal holiday celebrating the end of slavery, that would fall on January 1, which is already a holiday and so fed gov't employees wouldn't get an extra paid day off to loaf and screw over taxpayers.
So Juneteenth it is, even though it makes no sense for it to be a national holiday.

It doesn't. Sovereign immunity dates from the time of kings because kings oversaw the entire court system of justice. Therefore, you could not use the king's instrument of courts and his agents, to sue the king for wrongdoing. Aka, it is that the king can do no wrong. But, that is in their official capacity. Even in the divine right of kings era, they recognized that people could be hurt by the king's agents and so a process allow people to pursue claims to the king for damages--aka courts of claims when they got formalized.
Individual government agents should by and large not be given qualified immunity or even absolute immunity. Congress can change that via statutes for the most part and the court can go back to the ultra vires (beyond the law) std for liability.

A better use of chicken manure is to improve fields as it has very high ammonia nitrate concentrations. Dispersal by plowing it under also eliminates much of the smell and groundwater risks by decreasing concentrations. Hog waste is a bit more problematic as hogs and humans can pass diseases to each other more easily than from chickens.

The info coming out about the Uvalde shooting is absolutely incredible. Uvalde cops got threat level four vests in 2018. They had active shooter drills in that school eight weeks prior. The SRO said he engaged the shooter, then later admitted he lied. Cops waited an additional 30 minutes AFTER THEY'D RECEIVED THE GEAR THEY WERE WAITING AROUND FOR, AND THEY'D STILL BE WAITING IF AN OFF DUTY BP AGENT HADN'T IGNORED THEIR BULLSHIT AND GONE IN.

For those unfamiliar with Traficant: he was a corrupt OH Dem (Youngstown). But a decent enough fellow, at least by American standards. Not a foreign-owned traitor, child-buggerer, or murderer; none of the usual stuff. And certainly nothing worse than any other Congressman was doing.
Anyway, he caucused with Dems, but was a constant thorn in their sides, blasting Dem leaders from the House floor for fun, and routinely siding with the GOP on important bills. But the final straw was when he became the sole Dem vote for Hastert's speaker election. Then the knives came out, and the Dems moved on him. Expulsion from Congress, criminal prosecution, jail time, the works.
And when they did - which GOPe thug called for his resignation, signaling his definite conviction in a removal vote? None other than Hastert. It was an early indicator of what was actually going on in the Uniparty.

In the videos I've seen, they're usually just insistent that the "auditor" can't film there, but not terribly assholish. Lately, it seems like a lot of cops have gotten the message that filming in public is fine, and we don't see nearly as many cops insisting you can't film them arresting someone, as an example.

The system is broken. This is a surprise to nobody. But you can't honestly claim that Durham did nothing as you have been saying all along and then see what actually took place and say that you nailed it. Not if you are being honest. A corrupt jury is not a prosecutor doing nothing.

Funny thing? My Grandfather had 20,000 egg laying chickens on his ranch... in San Fernando CA. Bought it in the 40's when it was all farmland... but the city grew around it. Sold it in the 80's, and it was 10 miles inside Suburbia.
