  • More headlines from he 21st century: Robot orders increased 40% in the first quarter. (Business Insider / MSN)

Many entry level jobs are going to go extinct, which while inevitable, is not necessarily a trend we want to accelerate. Change is a fine thing as long as it's not deliberately pushed faster than people can adapt.

  • 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
    2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
    3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
    4. A robot may not be repaired by anyone other than the original manufacturer.

Separate right-to-repair bills failed in North Carolina and California.

You'll own nothing, and you'll repair nothing. And you'll eat journalists, because bugs are too valuable.

  • This year's iPhone will stick to TSMC's 5nm, and not jump to 4nm or 3nm. (9to5Mac)

4nm chips are in early production now, but apparently not in the volumes Apple requires. 3nm won't ship until late next year. And 5nm is pretty damn good already.

But this means the iPhone... The 2022 iPhone probably won't be a significant advance over the 2021 model.

  • Stuck some of my 8TB SMR drives in the Synology NASes so they're at least full of working drives. Two mirrored in one unit, and one as a separate backup disk in another.

So far they haven't done anything awful; as far as I know the serious problems only arise when rebuilding a RAID-5 or RAID-6 array, where they blow the time out from days to weeks.

6 G'day Pixy!

I was willowed:

Another band I saw at the infamous concert on the Rhine at LoriLei was Brand X.

I didn't know until just now, that it was a Phil Collins endeavor around the same time he was in a band called Genesis. This video has a short minute or so interview before the music.

In one of his memoir-intros to the robot stories, Asimov swore that John W. Campbell, editor of the magazine Astounding Science Fiction, to whom the young Asimov had sold several stories, gave him the outline of the Three Laws in one of their conversations.

19 I saw a news blurb a bit ago.
Ronny Hawkins, 87 is morte.
----
What's his claim to fame?
Posted by: Ciampino at May 29, 2022

One of the great unsung bands from back in the day was Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. The Hawks broke off and became the back up some folk singer. If I remember correctly his name was Bob Dylan, something like that. Basically, the band went from bar band to epic band under Hawkins because live non stop.

Bo Diddley (I am pretty sure the Hawks were the Band on this recording - it is smokin hot) https://youtu.be/IDpenk9sDS8

22 To Lost in Space from the previous thread: No, I didn't go to see the kitten at the shelter 3 hours away. They never got back to me about it. They don't have Sunday appointments. And next week it'll be tough for me to manage a visit during their 11 to 3 window. I dunno if this can happen.

What worries me a bit more is that the late Chekov's breeder has removed pics of 3 of the kittens from the 3/26 litter from her FB site. Are there space/storage limits on an FB page? If not, why would she remove them?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at May 30, 2022 05:08 AM (c6xtn)

23 Played a round of golf yesterday and won 25 bucks. Wasn't really feeling it, either. Back and hips were tight. Even the lubrication of three beers at the turn didn't help a whole lot, although they gave me a better outlook on the rest of the day.

Then went to Walmart to get reimbursed for ten large jars of Jiff peanut butter. Got 60 bucks back so the wife tells me to go ahead and buy some groceries while I was there. Ended up spending an additional 90 bucks.

Came home and went out to my shop and worked on my Moxon Vise prototype. Before I make one out of expensive hardwood, thought I'd practice by making it out of laminated pieces of scrap 3/4" Birch plywood.

34 Sorry to keep jumping with all the odd ball music stuff. I may not know Dante but dammit, I know something about blues, jazz and rock n' roll. I have listened to endless recordings and read more than a few album liner notes when that was possible. Since album liner notes are dead, I poke around in places unmentionable on the internet, mostly here, and drink fortified wine all the time. It was quite an education, not a profitable one, but an education. Now about that robot cooking burgers, what we need is a kit version that can cook up bourbon and act as a jukebox.

Apple Inc.’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, better known as WWDC, is just about a week away. This is the event where the company outlines its software strategy for the next year.

That includes Apple’s next mobile operating system, iOS 16. From what I’m told, the new software—codenamed Sydney—is a fairly significant upgrade. It will be chock full of changes across the operating system, including updates to notifications, iPad multitasking, and the Messages and Health apps. The makeover also includes a part of the interface that’s often an afterthought: the lock screen.

You would love the New Mexico State University marching band uniforms. They are vaguely like something a confederate general would wear except for the hats; they have those feathers that go straight up in the air in front. MacBooks will never get a main touchscreen.

What I can envision them doing and what I thought they would have already done is integrate an Ipad type screen into the area where the gigantic mouspad area is and create a niche at the top to store and charge an apple pencil.

Now that would be a compelling reason to upgrade my 2015 MacBook pro.

GIGABYTE B550 UD AC ATX w/ WIFI 802.11, 1 Gigabit LAN, 5 PCIe x16, 4 SATA3, 2 M.2 SATA/PCIe
or
GIGABYTE Z590 UD AC ATX, ARGB, 802.11ac, 2.5GbE LAN, 2 PCIe x16, 2 PCIe x1, 5 SATA3, 3x M.2
SATA/PCIe [+14]

The first one takes an AMD cpu and the second is an Intel.

Sure, but Apple has been strenuously anti-touchscreen in their displays and if they incorporate touch , it's going to be on their terms.

And incorporating an Ipad type display kills many birds birds with one stone.

You have a mouse input device, you'll have a Wacom type drawing pad, you'll have a touch interface and you will have a secondary screen and it will be in a more natural position and orientation than reaching to touch a main monitor display.

I think a lot of it is influenced by what she could see herself doing or needing to do. Intel vs amd is a big one (I like amd but Intel has improved over the last couple of years), but there's a big difference in the number of available slots for upgrades. Just glancing it looks like the first has the edge in PCIe's, while the second has more storage slots.

I've been reading articles that apple is actively working on merging iPad OS and Mac OS. At that point it's a no-brainer to stick a touch screen on a Mac. And if you've ever used a touch screen laptop they're pretty nice. At one point Jobs said nobody wants a big phone and now Apple makes phones the size of a wall. Another time Tim Cook dissed the surface pros as being a waffle iron in a toaster or some other cock up like that and what do you have today, the iPad pro which is kind of a cock up of the surface pro. I'm sticking to they didn't want to rewrite the OS

231 I have got to agree with Thomas Bender on Apple’s use of touchscreens. If they wanted to they could’ve made the iMac or MacBooks with touchscreens a few generations back but they didn’t.

Instead Apple went with the 12” iPad Pro concept which can be used like any laptop by attaching a keyboard. The only drawback is iOS which is terrible for productivity, especially file management, compared to a standard laptop. I’ve always hated Apple’s idea of multitasking on iPads as well. It’s clunky and uses way too many gestures in order to open/close anything. It’s gotten better in iOS 15 but is still a pain in the butt every time I open second windows by accident.

I think Thomas is on to something with a second screen incorporated onto MacBooks used for touch/drawing similar to the Asus Zenbook Duo laptop. I could see that being very useful if put on the bottom below the keyboard in place of a touchpad.
