Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Day Before Memorial Day Edition!![]() Let's talk about the school massacre in Uvalde, TX and specifically the issue of the police response. I think we all agree the shooter was a piece of shit. I hesitate to even bring any of this up because it's being beaten to death with often wild speculation in the media and elsewhere, but here goes. The left, predictably, is politicizing the issue justifying greater gun control, a reaction that at least to me is hardly surprising. Despicable? Yes. Surprising? No. It's also yet another enormous distraction from the slow-motion train wreck of the Biden presidency, but I digress. For both reasons I believe it's safe to say the left will drag this out to get every bit of mileage from it they can. Assholes. Allow me to preface my remaining comments on the matter by saying I have never been in combat or in any sort of self-defense life-or-death situation, and can only speculate on what my reaction would be. I might very well wet my pants and hightail it in the other direction. I absolutely believe it's the sort of thing you can only know if you have been in that unfortunate and grim situation. My thoughts? I simply do not understand how anyone stands aside when something like a mass shooting is taking place. I don't care if you are waiting on permission to engage from the on-scene commander, for reinforcements to arrive, or for the goddam Tooth Fairy. The need to act was very real and very immediate, and anyone with anything more substantial than a pair of toenail clippers should have positively waded into the situation in an effort to stop it. Period. I am generally not the brightest guy in the room, but I'd like be able to look at myself in the mirror the next day. I can only hope there is a very thoughtful and thorough examination of the facts and circumstances surrounding this massacre and the law enforcement response, and anyone in authority who made bad decisions at the time is held accountable. I am old enough to believe the police exist to, among other things, stop maniacs in the process of committing a slaughter. To my way of thinking, that's part of the deal when you pin on a badge and start demanding respect from the citizenry. In the extreme, the most important thing is not officer safety, especially in a situation as grave as this one. That may be harsh, but that is the way I feel. You don't want to do it? Fine. Just get the hell out of my way. Having said that with sufficient internet bravado, I hope a calm and rational investigation is conducted and any needed improvements to law enforcement operating philosophy and methodology are the result. We're a long, long way from having answers to some very legitimate questions, and this deserves every ounce of dispassionate examination possible. A lot of innocent people have died and the families of the victims and survivors have had their lives changed forever. Hopefully some lessons will be learned. And here is an alternate point I haven't heard much about, especially in the media. Is it just possible we're beginning to see the police hesitate in a situation that might otherwise demand instant action as a result of the left's zeal for prosecuting law enforcement officers? Also something to think about. So what do you think? Before you answer, please remember none of us were there and while details are beginning to emerge, this is all largely still speculation. Please be courteous and respectful in your comments. Thanks. ![]() ![]() Two pics for you, the latest acquisition to the MG collection, the F.N. Model D, BAR in .30-06 made for the Belgium army with some of its accessories, sitting next to its grandchild the MAG58 GPMG. The AK47 has some interesting provenance behind its beat up appearance, it is a Vietnam war capture rifle taken off the previous owner a Viet Cong member in the Nui Dat area of South Vietnam in 1968. Victor Coy, 1RNZIR had a few contacts with Viet Cong elements on a 3 week patrol and after one ambush during re-org post contact, one dead VC with his rifle was cleared. As the rifle has seen a lot of hard use in the bush and the previous owner had bleed all over the rifle before it was carried around for a few weeks it externally looks to be in very poor and rusted condition but internally was very good with a nice bore. It is a Chinese made AK47, full auto with the solid forged receiver, missing its flip out bayonet and cleaning rod which was probably taken off by the Viet Cong. The rifle was taken out by Victor Coy and eventually made its way to NZ.Very nice, NZ Frank! Thank you!! Decided I'd submit a range report as a novice shooter who is very much a work in progress. The first picture was from my prior trip to the range in early April. For each of the 4" circles, I shot one magazine as I moved the target away and then back toward me (distances noted). As you can see, I was pretty consistently landing shots to the left of target. ![]() Since then, this really cool guy (?? - W) posted a shot correction diagram on his gun thread, which encouraged me to reposition my trigger finger a bit. The second picture shows results of today's trip to the range. My shots are on the right side, whereas the left side shows my younger son's first time shooting a handgun. We obviously both have lots of room to improve, but the tips I've picked up from you and the Horde are surely helpful. FWIW, we were shooting a Shadow MR920 (9mm) which is my first/only handgun. I've only had it about 9 months, but it has inspired a growing wish list for future acquisitions. Coincidentally, I already own a canoe.... ![]() ![]() Decided to try point shooting, so I bought one of those laser cartridges to fit my EDC handgun, a 45ACP Taurus. Practiced the following drill around the room for about 30 minutes or so: Pick up the pistol from my lap, turn off safety, and "shoot" the bobble head on the shelf. Repeat, but this time "shoot" the doorknob. Didn't seem all that difficult, so - range trip! Ok, I didn't really need an excuse - I'm retired and I can. Took a 22 and the 45. Set up the target at 30 feet and fired off a few shots using the 22. Not bad. Pulled out the 45 and shot all 11 rounds (circled on target) in 2 shot groups - draw from holster, turn off safety, fire two quick shots from hip area. Lather, rinse, repeat. Had one that would have been a probable miss up around the shoulder, one that I'll call a disabling shot (made ME cringe!), and the rest - I'll take them. No awards for this outing, but for just a tiny bit of practice, it just doesn't seem that difficult. I'll keep working at this and would recommend any and all shooters give it a try. You might surprise yourself!Nice shooting and thanks, Bama Bubba! I really encourage everyone to practice various shooting styles if you are able to do so. By various styles, I am referring to methods such as point shooting, weak hand/strong hand, and shooting with movement. I realize many ranges do not allow this sort of practice, but you should take any opportunity you do get to see what it's about. I had a wedding to attend that's a long drive from my house this afternoon, so I decided to spend two nights in the recommended hotel and visit a new range this morning before the ceremony. This is a fancy club, has to be at least 20 acres and they do trap shooting, a tournament was happening when I got there, so I gawked for a while before going to the rifle and pistol range. The good news is they are open to the public on Saturday mornings and everyone is so nice it's like they want you to join the club or something. There's a bbq area and all that. I just got a Sig Sauer P229 .40S&W because a guy I know in a pawnshop told me it was great and he is right. I'm old enough to remember the Miami shootout which is responsible for the creation of this round and this pistol. The P229 was carried by law enforcement and the Coast Guard and I'm pretty sure this pistol was a service issue, it has seen a lot of rounds, but it's in good shape. Came with original box and several magazines. Anyway I was doing lousy at the range on targets and this range has steel too... Also lousy. Until I was complaining to a Range guy and he said if it's a new pistol to me, that I should go slower, use the range provided optics to judge every round and start from seated position, at the bench using the blocks and beanbags this range also provides. After I had spent an hour damaging my confidence, his suggestions brought me back to better than new in about 2 clips. Walk before you run! Thanks Lurker scottst! Absolutely go slow at first, whether shooting a new-to-you gun or practicing a new drill. Incidentally, the Sig Sauer P229 in .40S&W was the very first gun in the WeaselCollection. No fooling! The first gun I ever purchased. Here are a couple of pics. I need to dust it off and shoot it! ![]() ![]() This week the She Equips Herself gal goes to the range to discuss guns for shooters who might not have strong hands. I'm right handed and left eye dominant so point shooting is not straightforward for me. I have to point to the right of the target . How far right depends on my distance. The farther away the target the farther right I have to point, I've practiced enough though that it's second nature.

"The need to act was very real and very immediate"
While I agree with this, Weasel, there is something important to consider: Police (and military) operate on protocols. "In this situation, do X; in that situation, do Y." In the military you ALWAYS rush a close ambush. A far ambush you pull back as necessary and maneuver to flank, then rush. You do this because combat is a crappy time for original thinking. We talk about a similar thing with civilian defensive shooting - when the bovine excrement hits the rotary impeller you will revert to training and instinct, so you train, train, TRAIN. Well, it seems someone on site chose the wrong *protocol* and it changes the way they handle things. Instead of "active shooter" - because he had locked himself in a single room - they went with "barricaded suspect". You're no longer rushing in, guns blazing, in that situation. And, by all appearances he WAS a "barricaded suspect" - except there were wounded kids in that room, bleeding out, and "barricaded suspect" doesn't take that into account. (There were also some still alive, who were not being held as hostages.) 1/2 Posted by: GWB at May 29, 2022 07:09 PM (f4IaF) 9

I'm not absolving anyone, but it needs to be pointed out and considered how much rode on that single decision. I also want to point out that stopping people from rushing in where they might get killed IS part of a police officer's job at a scene like that. Firefighters will do the same thing to you if you want to run into a burning building to save your kid. It's got to be one of the hardest parts of those jobs. Lastly, it took someone who basically said "F the protocols!" to actually drive in and re-assess the situation. A great many heroes have been made in wars from that very act - "I don't care what the rules say, I'm doing X!" Of course, a lot of heroes get their status posthumously (*nods to Memorial Day*). Solutions? They exist. But they're not the sort the Safetyists or the hedonists like. /serious sad stuff Posted by: GWB at May 29, 2022 07:14 PM (f4IaF) Posted by: andycanuck (yikp0) at May 29, 2022 07:15 PM (yikp0) 23

The police and school failure in Uvalde, and Broward, and nearly every other similar situation, started much earlier. It was a failure to fill the "school to prison pipeline". Every one of these yutes was a "known wolf", but no one ever gave their crimes any consequences. Some people are simply evil and beyond redemption.

Oppsie, I see I missed your question. Yes we sort of work on the Brit Regimental system with normally 3 Battalions to a Regiment . Currently as we are a now 3rd world country we have 2 Regular Force (full time) Battalions (2/1st and 1) plus 4 ,was recently 7, Territorial Force Battalions (part time) working under the banner of Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment RNZIR. Which is chiselled into my leg in ink.
During WWII we had numbers up to 26th Battalion. Posted by: NZFrank with an M2 at May 29, 2022 07:30 PM (bgJ0E) 65

I've been getting email from various vendors about sales of reloading tools, especially Lee gear. Nice to see that gear back in stock. Components like powder, cases, and bullets are showing up again. Primers are still hard to find. MidwayUSA has none in stock. Most primers are listed as 'temporarily unavailable' but I never see a projected date for them to reappear on the shelves.

On the new SIG, is the 6.8mm that much lighter or more accurate than just standardizing the AR10 as a milspec and using .308?
Posted by: G'rump928(c) at May 29, 2022 07:17 PM (yQpMk) --- It goes super-fast. It has such intense pressures that the cartridge has to have a steel base less there be a failure - brass isn't up to the job. IMHO, this is nothing but a cash grab by the Army. There is no evidence that the AR platform was in any way inadequate, and there are no foreseeable land conflicts. China will be defeated - if at all - by a combination of air, sea and space power. My thoughts:
- I think the 'At the end of the day, the most important thing is that the officer goes home safely' is a piss poor standard for a first responder. - Related, 'Out of an abundance of caution, ...' BLECH! That means too much caution. - If a fireman can rush into a burning building to save occupants (and urgent, chaotic and dangerous situation where they can get killed dead as easily as getting shot), then we should expect no less from the police (ESPECIALLY since a lot of fire departments are volunteer). - I'd rather the dirtbag be shooting at me than my kids. Doesn't matter if I am armed with anything more than a switch. - Cops that got their kids and left others should be FIRED. And driven out of town. - Cops that prevented parents from entering before the last child was killed should be fired and charged / sued for negligent homicide. She's so pregnant that everyone is counting her braxton-hicks contractions while watching the PGA playoff. LOL Range day today, but unfortunately not much serious work. +1 for the ACOG, too, Mr. Gaga. The closest thing to GI issue is the TA-31. It's a fixed 4 power magnification scope. Biggest pluses for the ACOG are its independence from batteries, ability to take a beating, relative ease of use, wide field of view, light weight and compactness compared to LVPO scopes. Biggest minuses are the very short eye relief (your eyes have to be right behind the optic), need for practice to use in CQB situations, and cost ($1000 - $1400). 53 GWB makes some very good points. I can't help but get angry at what happened but it's rational thinking such as that that helps keep one grounded.
That said the Police Chief ought to resign. That was a really bad call. And the teacher what left that door open to get her phone should probably find a new job somewhere else. Like Timbuktu, perhaps. Posted by: Robert at May 29, 2022 07:26 PM (dfrzq) The teacher, and the principal who is responsible for enforcing the closed and locked door policy described in the Uvalde CISD Preventive Measures, need to be canned. Joe Biden hugged the principal at the school today; that angered me because she is part of the chain of failure that allowed the shooter access to start with. Assuming the open door and unlocked classroom door fails were not singular instances on that day, only. The resource officer should have seen the propped-open door when he or she drove by, and called that in. f not, another failure. I can sort-of absolve the resource office who was scanning for a shooter, not for open school building doors. Yes! I went to the range this week, and I have thoughts...
For the last couple weeks I've been using rather heavy cartridges - 7.62mm Tokarev and .45 ACP. Normally, nothing to write home about, but combined with yard work, my hands were feeling a little tenderized. So I thought I'd try something mild. Soothing. Mouse guns: .32 ACP and .380 ACP. I also needed a smooth platform, so for .32 ACP there was no other choice than the Walther PP. Ergonomic, comfortable, beautiful. For .380, I likewise knew that Hungarian engineering would give me a smooth, silky ride. FEG M37, to be specific. It was glorious. The PP is capable of wonderfully tight groups, and folks at the range said it was louder than the .380. I put around through a full jug of water and it split out the back side. The M37 destroyed a jug, which was weird because we all know .380 ball is useless, right? Then again, these weapons had 4" barrels, so maybe that extra length matters. Anyhow, it was therapeutic. Too bad the guns were lost on the canoe trip home. I should really start driving to these things. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at May 29, 2022 07:39 PM (llXky) 85

I did get to the range this week. (Now that I'm a member, I can schedule range time!) I spent all my time and effort shooting up just 3 targets with 150 rounds of 9mm.
I worked on just 3 things: proper squeeze on the weapon (push-pull and tightness of grip), finger placement (which I think needs re-evaluation), and NOT ANTICIPATING recoil. I saw improvements. The last 40 rounds or so, though, saw some drifting back to low and left. (No matter what, I'm disemboweling my target, at least.) I am taking my pistol bench rest next time to try and remove any extraneous factors and see if maybe I have a sight issue, too. If I do, I'm gonna need some pointers on fixing that. TEACHERS & GUNS - I think the majority of teachers are normal people and those we see in the media represent the same % of the population as BLM does. Teachers who want to protect their students, with proper vetting and training, should be allowed. It would shut school mass murders down in a heartbeat, literally. Armed teachers is an idea that should be promoted
It appears that there is no precise answer to the number or which school systems allow teachers to carry, however, there are many more than generally assumed. The problem is that promoting the idea of armed teachers is far behind permission. Here are some proactive schools and what they've done. Also a list of states. _COLORADO SPRINGS. I haven't looked at the video about the M5 replacement rifle but am doubtful it will convince me that the replacement of the M-16 is really necessary.
A combat infantryman needs his rifle to be light, reliable and with semi-auto and automatic capabilities. That's about it. Accuracy, particularly when you are talking about the M-16 vs any new rifle, is not a factor. Half the shots fired in anger are more likely to hit a bird flying overhead than anything else. Stopping power is also not really a factor as hitting anyone is very doubtful. That's what artillery and air is for. Posted by: Legion of Boom at May 29, 2022 07:33 PM (XDTkk) I'm not sure I believe that one. Kids are in groups in school. There's no way cops went in and JUST got THEIR kid out of a classroom. They might have prioritized their kid's classroom, but there's no way they just left all the other kids there. I also could see (since these elementary school kids evidently had cell phones in their classrooms) cops going in *knowing where some kids were* because they got a scared text from their kid, and going to the bathroom or other unsecured location to get any kids there. GAU-5 series weapons were rebuilt into GUU-5/Ps to accommodate the M855 "green tip" round by mating existing lowers to new uppers w/ 14.5 inch barrels with the 1 in 7 twist. Castle Rock v Gonzales, folks. The police have zero legal duty to rescue individuals. Please look up the case if you're not familiar with it. Now, I have friends in law enforcement who'd blow off Castle Rock and orders to stand down. I'm sure there are plenty of other good LEOs across the country who'd do the same. Posted by: Anna Puma at May 29, 2022 07:51 PM (hBR2w) --- That's the 191st, I believe. They were inactivated when their F-4 Phantoms were retired. They became the maintenance squadron for the 171st Airlift Squadron, which is unusual because normally both the "flying squadron" and the maintainers would share the same number. Then again, they are part of the 127th Wing out of Selfridge ANGB, so they share space with the 107th. I started my ANG career with the 127th so very long ago...they flew F-16s and C-130s back then. Oh, and I got a new gun this week: EAA Windicator in .357mag. I got it the day *after* my range time, so I haven't shot it yet. It is neither a light nor small weapon (4" barrel).
I did discover something interesting, though. The manual says it's not for sale in California or other states where they have a "melting point" restriction. It was the first I'd heard of that sort of restriction. It's evidently an attempt to prevent cheap*, crappy weapons like the original "Saturday Night Special". (* Also read as "inexpensive" or "available to people not of means".) It seems some places have exemptions for polymer parts. But, the EAA Windicator is a zinc alloy, so it's melting point is below that of ferrous metal, and therefore BANNED. Posted by: GWB at May 29, 2022 07:59 PM (f4IaF) 143

* He probably saw the government employees (teachers, staff) going in and out of it while he was wandering around the campus and surrounding area for twelve minutes before any government employees (cops) - not just "resource officers", but ANY cops - decided to show up and any of the government employees (teachers, staff) thought to lock the doors because someone is shooting right outside. Imagine how horrible the area is if an elementary school and the staff no longer pay attention to someone shooting literally right outside of your building. And again, every failure in this instance was a government employee's, from failing the student to not charging him with multiple crimes multiple times, to the social workers not being able to help him. Not a single other gun owner is to blame. Hundreds of government employees are, though. Not all of you, but *most* of you fucked up, and fucked up badly. Because of this, an extreme body count of nineteen dead kids and two dead teachers was run up by the murderous scum, mostly by your allowance. You were ordered to stand back, to stand down, you say? Bullshit. That's when you have *comms problems*, your *radio didn't work*, and you go in anyway. Your Sgt or the Lt tell you directly to not go in? That's when you cash in your career, tell him or her to fuck off, and go in, regardless. Kids were needlessly dying, the whole time you were "just following orders". That defense died at Nuringberg, and with it died every conceivable excuse you might offer. My advice to you? Go find new L.E. jobs somewhere else in Texas. Texas offers plenty of "far away" for you, and you need to go far, far away. Even better, go to another State. Best? Get the fuck out of law enforcement, and take up pumping gas and wiping windshields. Sell your house, uproot your family, and just *go*. (Though, they work better if you don't shoot out the written parts with your lousy control and shooting 40 rounds into one target.) They're available lots of places online and probably at your local range. The best suggestion I can give is to find a buddy or a range officer or an instructor to watch you. That's what happened to me a couple of weeks back, where the range officer (helps I was there during the day with a light load of people shooting) gave me some helpful tips on what I might be doing wrong. A very well trained gunner has two special-build ARs, one with a red dot no magnifier, the other an LPVO scope. Twin things out near the muzzle, another thing flashlight back from that. He has a timer device on his belt. He begins with the target a head adjacent a head at 5 yards, calls it a hostage target, times himself for a tap tap with each gun. The guy's a real pro. Likely a SWAT somewhere or a range trainer. Who's the guy? And what was the video? Posted by: Mr Gaga at May 29, 2022 08:10 PM (KiBMU) 182
Also in today's shoot apparently weasel is slowly grooming swa to be his mini-me. She has taken a liking to Kimber 1911s, and today she decided that the Sig P226 is also a good gun for her. Oh! And get some snap caps and dry fire at home (following all the rules of gun safety!). Practice the penny drill - put a penny on the front sight and practice pulling the trigger without the penny falling off. It will get you to get nice smooth trigger pulls. Just heavy enough to negate recoil and the green dot was incredible. Also, the group helped me put about 200 rounds through the G44 which I wanted to shoot today to get prepped for the G48 arriving at the end of the week. Hoped to have it today but 7 day waiting period in MD.

Deplorable SOB @ 83 - Walter Craig in Selma. I grew up in Selma. haven't been back in 30 years or so. First gun purchase was a Rem 270 BDL from W Craig in about '76.
Last time I was in Selma, took a Beretta OU to Walker Arms(?) out on West 80 to have a pad installed. Stock had been damaged and I refinished. Ramsey Knight and McCulloch (head gunsmith) looked it over, asked who refinished and then offered me a job on the spot. My happiest career day. If you can get some CCI .22 ammo for it, use that for the first 200 rds. of break-in. The Brownings run the CCI like they were made for each other. The "green gun" Browning was getting broken in with lesser ammo, which resulted in some functioning hiccups until well over 100 rds. into things. Regarding the 6.8 SPC, in reading the ballistics on the round, it appears it will not be the barrel burner the 556 is. However, recoil is probably going to be an issue, and, follow up shots may be problematic. which, in combat, could be a serious issue. Granted, the military could go back to actually training riflemen, rather than pursuing the proper pronoun, but, in this day and age, I don't see it changing in the near future.

Furthermore,
The most common issue with new firearms is that often the barrel has shipping grease in it so it does not rust. Simply take a dry patch on your cleaning rod and attach the clean dry cleaning patch through the loop or use a piercing type jag sized for a 45 and pierce the center of the dry patch. Swab the barrel from the end of the bore (the danger end) to the breech (where the bullet firing chamber is). If greasy crud is on the patch, then use a wet patch and run it down the barrel with bore solvent for grease and powder residue of your choice: Hoppes 9, Butch's Bore Shine, or some of the newer bio friendly types like Bore Viper that do not stink very much. Then run a dry patch down to check to see if you have not missed anything. If you have, then another wet patch and so on. Should not need to break out the bore brush. Hickock 45 has a short video on how to clean a 1911 model pistol. But if you can only spare ten minutes to do something quick, I recommend: - Run a brush and cleaning patch w/ oil down the barrel a few times. - Lubricate the rails the slide moves on and any other place where you have metal on metal contact between moving parts. - Wipe away any carbon/dirt on the feed ramp. - Brush and wipe away dirt/residue on the breech block (rear of chamber, where the firing pin hole is) and the extractor. Hope this helps. Posted by: Ed L at May 29, 2022 08:30 PM (/lmRp) 260

Posted by: screaming in digital at May 29, 2022 08:18 PM (pkAcY) Look for ones on how to break down (or "take down" or "disassemble") the 1911. If it's a full-size ("GI") you shouldn't have any trouble finding a bunch. With the 1911, I'll say you shouldn't have to do much: put a small amount of cleaner in the barrel, run a brass brush through it a few times, then swab it out with patches until they come out clean. Then use those patches or a toothbrush and put a little cleaner on it and hit the ramp, the recoil spring and the thingy inside that (is it a buffer on a 1911?). If, OTOH, you have a 1911 officer, and it has the bushless barrel, you will have a harder time finding videos on breaking it down properly. Since I use private browsing for most of my gun stuff, I can't even tell where I found decent ones. ![]() Posted by: GWB at May 29, 2022 08:33 PM (f4IaF) 267

238 Regarding the 6.8 SPC, in reading the ballistics on the round, it appears it will not be the barrel burner the 556 is. However, recoil is probably going to be an issue, and, follow up shots may be problematic. which, in combat, could be a serious issue. Granted, the military could go back to actually training riflemen, rather than pursuing the proper pronoun, but, in this day and age, I don't see it changing in the near future.
My .02, and, even that's a bit inflated. Posted by: blake ----------------- Blake, 6.8 SPC is NOT what the military will be using. It is the 277 Sig Fury (SAAMI name--military has other nomenclature (6.8x51 is the measurement) which tops out at about 80k psi and pushes a 140gr bullet to about 3000 fps) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.277_Fury Much, much, hotter than the 6.8 SPC which is a good hunting round btw. Re-assembling a 1911, with standard guide rod & spring.
Hold the slide upside down. Seat the barrel, and insert and turn-in the barrel bushing. Seat the recoil spring capture tube onto the forward end of the recoil spring, and seat the "button" end of the tube into the bushing, from the rear-underside of the barrel. Seat the guide rod into the rear of the recoil spring, and gently compressing the spring, seat the convex portion of the guide rod onto the underside of the barrel, and slowly release pressure until it seats against it's "shoulder" under the barrel. Next, using your thumb to keep the spring in place against the barrel, rotate the assembly into the upright position. Orient the barrel link to be straight-down with the hole fully visible. Carefully work slide onto frame and move rearward, till the barrel link hole is visible through the takedown pin (slide release) hole in the frame. Insert slide release till it bears against frame mounted spring plunger. Using small knife blade, compress said plunger pin, which will allow the slide stop to seat home against the plunger pin. I wore it in my belly bad to the grocery store. It's 50 and raining here, so I was wearing trousers with a sweater and a raincoat. Easily concealed. My only concern was when I was reaching up high for some spicy brown mustard on an upper shelf. I got home and a friend called me to say she was on the beach with her boys. I unloaded my groceries and went out to meet her without discarding my pistol. I KNOW she'd freak if she knew I had a gun on me, so it was a test. I did fine. We hung out and played with her boys and yapped for a couple hours. Came home and took off the gun. Feeling better about it becoming a part of me. Still need more time. The ones that came with it are some plastic junk made to look like horn or antler. They were popular in the 1950s for some reason. The new grips are holly, which is white and resembles ivory. It should look great against the deep blue finish Ruger used on those early Blackhawks.

Okay, my mistake. No idea where I got the idea the military had gone with the 6.8 SPC. Posted by: blake
----------------- Not an issue Blake. As others note, journalists including many 'gun industry' types often get confused on technical issues. The 6.8 SPC was developed originally for use by SOCOM as a harder hitting, longer range, cartridge that fit in the AR frame. Unfortunately, that was about the time that Remington began to hit the rocks and they actually botched the line drawings for the cartridge so that the approved SAAMI cartridge was a more lackluster performer. That is why there are actually 6.8 SPC Type 1 chambers (now largely extinct in new guns) and Type 2 which rectified what Remington screwed up. But, the kicker is that because chamber 1 is what SAAMI approved, 6.8 SPC is loaded lighter than it needs to be so it can be fired safely in both chambers. Up to about 4-5 hundred yards, the 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel are more or less equivalent in hitting power, ballistic drop, and so on. After 500, the Grendel takes the lead. But for whatever reason, target shooters went with the Grendel while hunters went with the 6.8 SPC and factory ammo reflects that. Posted by: whig at May 29, 2022 08:59 PM (Iq9dF) 334

I say bullhockey. It doesn't take long, and once you get it you get it. The ability to put the gun back on target is not even a comparison. I suppose it depends on the optic. I'm running a Triji on an FNX-45 Tactical, and not only does it take time to get the gun initially on target, it is also a perishable skill. I must leave the weapon cold and practice often, daily from retrieving the weapon from table tops, to wherever so that the time-to-target is minimized. Blaster, next time you take that P365 to the range, start shooting at 5 yards and see if you can hit at your point of aim. Then move it out the 7 yards and repeat. Move it to 10 yards next. Use paper targets and use different ones for each distance to see if any visible drop in impact of the "beaten zone" is visible. I suspect that the issue is that you're seeing the effect of gravity start to kick in at 10 yards when the rounds are coming out of something as compact as the P365. I've seen something similar happen when shooting my Detective Special and Diamondback when pushing those snubbies to and beyond 10 yards distance. Posted by: Ed L at May 29, 2022 09:03 PM (/lmRp) 341
The article I read seems to indicate the reason for the round is defeating body armor, which, I'm guessing means level three plate armor. Posted by: blake
------------- Yes, for projected newest body armor of the Chinese and Russians plus longer distances. What was it that the Sicilian said in the Princess Bride again? Something about land wars in Asia? The new cartridge will also have hefty muzzle blast, wear out suppressors more quickly, and over double to nearly triple the recoil of the current 5.56 unless they make it a really heavy mutha. Range report, still mostly doing IDPA Classification drills.
Took El Macho (CZ P07) and Bubba Fly (G17). Shot slightly better with Bubba Fly (down 3 vs down 4 and 5). That might be because I haven't practiced with El Macho for a month or so....skills do atrophy a bit, faster than I'd like. One handed shooting is still my weak spot. More drills, with .22 and full power loads, trying to get better. Also tried a 'convulsive' or hard grip. It didn't help much but at shorter ranges, it hurt less than expected. I still don't think it's the 'right' grip for me. More testing and training needed. Still...having fun. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards (Logan Tiberius 2012-2021) at May 29, 2022 09:07 PM (xcxpd) 351

I think you're correct; defeating body armor was one of the things the NGSW program had as a priority. The really high chamber pressures mean that the parts within the rifle (bolt, barrel, etc.) will wear out and break faster. The Army has already seen this fielding the M855A1 round, which has higher chamber pressure than the "green tip" ammo it replaced. But, big Army has a lot more $$ than we do to get replacement parts for its rifles and other small arms. Ed L,
FWIW, the 62 gr. Green Tip 5.56 ammo was adopted because in the 80's, NATO felt it needed ammo to penetrate body armor wearing Soviets for WWIII which the 55 gr could not do. Thus, the Light Armor Piercing SS109. But, the new bullet did not do what the older 55gr M855 did which was go ass over teakettle when hitting a soft target (aka bullet upset). This is was same case as the Mark VII 303 cartridge that generated wounds equivalent or better than the 30-06 or the 8x57 Mauser despite being a step behind in bullet power. The bullet design of the Mark VII cause bullet upset (aka keyholing) when hitting a soft target which generated more massive wound channels. The older M855 55 gr at 3000 fps did something similar on at close range despite not quite being designed for it purposefully. If you really want to play with it, buy you some old WWII era blacktip ammo and fire it in a 30-06 that you do not particularly care about as it will wear the barrel prematurely. For self defense, none of the above, since good point-shoot training ought to put rounds on center mass at legally short distances. If you are lobbing rounds out to twenty five yards, you won't survive either criminal or tort court. For target. you have all day, experiment to see what works best for you in certain lighting conditions and background. I understand that the M855A1 came into service specifically to fix this problem, which was a lot more pronounced in the M4 due to the lower muzzle velocity from the 14.5" barrels vice the 20" the M855 was designed for. The M855A1 solves the problem by fragmenting after impact, with the steel tip and copper slug going their separate ways after the copper jacket breaks up. The YouTube community has succeeded (as far as I know) in duplicating the results from the Army's claims. Wasn't a lot of that related to the slow twist of the original barrel?
Posted by: Duncanthrax ---------------------------- Some of it was alleged to be the 1:12 Twist or even older 1:14 varmint twist. Some of it was the bullet design with the ratio of weight in the bullet. The 1:9 or 1:8 was never a military std. and the 1:7 twist was adopted quite late in the 80's. The 1:12 according to Greenhill is about perfect to stabilize the 55gr M855, the 1:14 which was gone by the M16-A1's in mid Vietnam was really better for 50-52 gr bullet stabilization. I think the 1-14 was changed to 1-12 after tests in Alaska indicated problems with accuracy due to not stabilizing the bullets in very cold dense air. ..I've recently been reading about the British wars in South Africa against the Boers and the Zulus. The authors seem to be asserting that the British and German infantry rifles of the day could deliver effective fires out to 1000 yards. I'm having trouble believing this as the rifles had open iron sights. Any opinions anyone ??? Posted by: 11B40 at May 29, 2022 09:21 PM (uuklp)
Those were "volley sights", and a platoon or company would fire en-masse on the distant, enemy positions. They weren't aiming so much at any one particular soldier, but raining fire on the grouped enemy positions. Figure, +/- ten to twenty feet of lateral error, providing they had the elevation right. But, when a hundred soldiers fire as one, a few of those hundred rounds are likely to connect with an opponent. And then a quick throw of the bolts, and do it again. And again, etc. I would not care to be on the receiving end of such a volume of fire. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 29, 2022 09:27 PM (QzJWU) 414

The British SMLE of the day had a micrometer rear sight which could be flipped up and set to a thousand yards. so, yeah, "fire for effect" at a thousand yards was possible with the SMLE. I don't know about the Mauser, though, I suspect it had the same capabilitiy. ---- At school in Nairobi, Kenya we had a Cadet Force, equipped by the British Army there. Every year when we did our marksmanship qualifying, we used 303 rifles but with .22 barrels, and had those exact sights. I was damn good with that. This long range fire was supposed to be done by volleys or "area" fire, not individual point shooting. Since infantry and cavalry still used massed formations as late as 1914, volley fires at 1000 yards combined with the "mad minute" the SMLE was capable of was something the Germans learned to respect the hard way. Posted by: 11B40 --------------------------- Yes, under the right conditions, the good old 303 can hit at 1000 yards. The Boers used the 7x57 Mauser to good effect. BTW, the Brits at the time in the Boer War were using the older Long Lee Enfields as SMLE did not come around until 1903 approval. The longer barrels of the Long Lee gave a bit more range with the Cordite being used. There was also a Calvary model of the Long Lee which NZ Frank probably has. The Boer Mausers, from memory also had musket length barrels for their Mausers but used a bit better Ballistite powder than Cordite. Both would have massive bullet drops to get to 1000 meters or yards. Posted by: whig at May 29, 2022 09:34 PM (Iq9dF) 434

When breaking into IDPA, work with the local club, and ONLY go to "unregistered" practice matches, until you're ready to face the pressure and intensity of when they shoot for recorded scores.
Mostly, you'll get a lot of help on the unregistered days. Official Scoring days though? They'll have their game-faces on, and the focus and intensity that goes with it. And, Weasel. I don't know how you do it, but you consistently out-do yourself, week after week. This week is no exception.
Posted by: Ed L ----------------------- Nice to know that the Army improved its bullet and it worked. Thx for the information but I suspect civilians can't get this ammo either-but we can use hollow points, soft tip, or ballistic tips to get some of the same effects. You can find some contemporary discussion of the Boer War by no less than Winston Churchill. I suspect his book on the Boer War is now in the public domain and it includes his escape from a POW camp. He was there as a correspondent for newspapers.
Posted by: 11B40 That being said, the Long Lee had excellent sights that are probably better than the 7x57 model 93/95 Mausers that the Boers were using. Firing at extreme long distance would probably be discouraged because it would waste more ammo than it would be worth in logistics terms. That does not mean that some of the enlisted from both sides did not take potshots at the enemies on occasion and hit them at that range. The Brits and similar Mauser rifles were used in long range military shooting competitions for decades until replaced. This was true even for the scoffed at Carcano that in its original 1891 length barrel and twist gain barrel is a decent shooter. The heavy bullets at the time used also helped.
