I remember reading an account of Alexander's time in what is now Afghanistan; the Greeks who wrote about it complained that it was easy to control the cities, but that all the tribesman hid out in the mountains and attacked them constantly whenever they ventured outside the walls - and that overall, it was a worthless place not worthy of the effort it took to keep it. 2300 years and nothing has changed. Viewing this painting, my eye naturally starts at the left edge, at the apex of the triangle of light. Traversing from left to right I take in the dark-skinned people, all with their backs turned toward the viewer, as if shutting us out. The scene then opens up as the viewer scans across toward the right, forcing him to symbolically "reflect" on his own assumptions. As the left to right sweep reaches the extreme right edge of the scene, oh my god is that a giant penis???

You should look up the story of the 1919 Amritsar Massacre, if you want to see the point when the Brit's completely jumped the shark in India. Oh they held on for almost another 30 years after that, but that was just due to the disunity of India's home grown "leadership". That incident is the backdrop to what made Gandhi so successful.
The Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar was also the scene of a bloody 1984 attack by Indian armed forces on Sikh separatists who had occupied it. Posted by: Archimedes at June 03, 2022 10:20 AM (ZsR3z) 216

* We've got one that uses plastic arms that are on, for lack of a better description, rivets that allow them to be deflected when they strike stuff. They work really well, but yeah, I'd hate to get hit with even the plastic ones. I can't imagine metal. And yes, it will tear the crap out of the vinyl siding on your garage. "50,000 new IRS agents. Wonder how their AI program works?"
At the core of the IRS is an ancient giant unmaintanable hairball of BAL and COBOL, that nobody really understands anymore, and everybody is afraid to touch, because the last person to touch it gets the blame when it 'fails.' The definition of 'fail' is plastic. Posted by: Lithiated gp For Refreshment at June 03, 2022 10:59 AM (qpX6U) 384

Musk's demand that workers return to the office also provides many with a fig leaf in case they can't stand the guy and don't want to work there any more.
You'd be a damn fool to publicly state that you hate Elon and refuse to work for the man. It's much easier to say you just don't want to return to the office. Posted by: 496 at June 03, 2022 11:03 AM (VJsqe) 396
I've managed to eliminate the need for using a string trimmer by the judicious use of Roundup along landscape timbers, privacy fences, etc. A thin strip of bare earth looks fine to me if it means one less task of yardwork.

>>I'm going to give Musk a break here on his demand people return to the office. The man isn't stupid, and the engineering behind his enterprises probably require people to get together and discuss various solutions. I've been working from home since late 2019, I work for a broadcast systems integration company, the vast majority of our PMs, engineers and CAD are now done remotely. It is extraordinarily sub-optimal as what has taken the place of everyone being in the same room to hash out a problem and solve it in an hour has morphed into multiple Teams calls, with spotty internet connections, looking at E-Size cad drawings and a lot of panning and zooming, etc. The email load has also increased exponentially. It's horrible, but we will adapt ass we must. Posted by: Thomas Bender at June 03, 2022 11:09 AM (BPiji) Posted by: Left/Prog/Dem/Woke at June 03, 2022 11:11 AM (vU/qb) 403
