11 Two small 'teenage' chipmunks were fighting in my backyard this afternoon. I don't know if they were siblings 'play fighting' for training or if it was personal.

Just read an article that said the killer was wandering around outside the school randomly shooting at people across the street for twelve (12) minutes before two cops arrived and he shot them both and then ran into the school and entered the classroom.

Twelve (12) minutes of gunfire right outside the school and still the doors were not secured.

So, I had my surgery and everyone at the hospital was very nice and it was good to just sit in the room without my phone and without a TV, so I guess I missed all the freak out about guns after that terrible shooting. I am in pain but they did give me something for that.

I am home. I came home yesterday afternoon .
From all the anesthesia I got the longest night sleep I have had in a long time.

The raccoons are cool too. I'm glad Ace does these evening cafe things so we can all decompress from the day's bad news. He started this in 2020, I think, when so many of us were locked at home?

32 I had them do a field cut on my springer. Before, he was overly fluffy, with curls on his ears and hair all over his feet. Now he looks like a German Shorthair. I don't think he's happy with me but I can see how much weight he gained over the winter.

I think there's been some controversy about that. The watertight compartments were open at the top, so as the water filled the compartment it would lap over the top, filling the next one. The steel and rivets were brittle at the water temperature, so damage to the bow would have been catastrophic. I'm not sure hitting the iceberg head-on would have changed what happened.

The crushing of the forward compartments would have the tendency to compress the volume that can be filled with water and pull down the rest, and act as a shock absorber. Thus less "draw down" and fewer compartments open to the sea => no sinking,

The glancing blow ripped open enough to assure sinking, and quickly. Even a bit more time would have led some of the nearby ships to rescue a lot of people.

I have read about those bolts, and it is fascinating.

Front acts like a crumple zone, like those sand filled barrells in front of highway obstacles. A ship isnt totally rigid, so bending isn't transmitted universally through the ship.

Might have made the passengers fly about more, though, than in the real-world crash.

I saw it in the 70s or early 80s, and the show wasn't that long. Its a retelling of the old Flying Dutchman myth. And the show wasn't long besides.

There was a similar myth about some sailor that was moved from ship to ship getting torpedoed on each in WWII. Saw a Drachinfel video researching it showing it had been 'enhanced' in the retelling.

Well, I checked it out and bought a very reasonable repro of the mag holder pouch that was slipped over the stock of M1 Carbines. It arrived today and it is amazingly perfect as far as I can tell, being a kind of expert but not a super duper expert. Certainly looks right and fits right. I recommend. Hardest part was throwing it on from the canoe while estimating the spot where my carbine was in the lake.

That would be an interesting wreck to study. I'm guessing the lack of an engine up front in the VW was bad news, too, because not only was there nothing there to absorb impact, but the mass was behind the drive pushing forward throughout the entire crash.

Whig pointed out to me (others too, probably) that Classic Firearms has quite a few for somewhat reasonable prices. I'm on the fence because they seem a bit optimistic in ther ratings, but $1500 or so for an authentic shooter is pretty fair.

I've got an IBM already btw. It quickly became my favorite gun. It's the most sweet shooting, pleasant little rifle you can imagine. Plus the history. It's also nice to be at the range and let 12-15 year olds shoot it if they're interested in old firearms, because it's not something people see all that often, much less get a chance to shoot.

329 My mom survived a head on. She was in a Corvair, just pulling onto the road. Some kids were in a sports car, coming the other way, and went over into their lane. I believe they survived without injuries. Mom was a passenger, lost her teeth on the brake pedal and busted up her knees on the heater. Got it years ago when CMP had them for a while. From the stamp on the bottom it was Bavarian post war border patrol. The originals are pricy now...maybe the Vietnamese are still sitting on a bunch or the South Koreans...I don't think there are too many still out there in warehouses. Some of the repros sound like they are pretty nice but they aren't cheap either.

My Garand has a bit of a kick to it, but the little Carbine is very well mannered. I don't have anything to compare it to because it's so light-shooting, honestly. It's got more punch than a .22, but I wouldn't hesitate to give it to a beginner. Fantastic little rifles. Ammo is a bit pricey right now, but that's about everything.

A head-on collision would have crushed the bow, but would also have transmitted a severe shock back through the hull plates, quite possibly shearing off enough rivets to open seams just as wide as the gash, leading to the same result.

Also, the damage to lifeboats, davits, engineering, passengers and whatnot from a 24 mph collision would have also been quite catastrophic, leading to even greater loss of life if it had impeded the working of the pumps, launching of lifeboats and/or left large numbers of injured unable to make it up on deck.

The Greek Captain was one of the first off the ship, the louse. There were lots of jokes made about him. The ship was hit by one of those freak waves. The South African Airforce got everybody off using helicopters, though some got ashore via lifeboats INCLUDING THE CAPTAIN!

The official lid is screwed-down tight on the story. Never a good sign. What is different from almost every other shooting incident I can recall is how few officials are saying anything in public. No appearances let alone press Q&A by the school principal, school district supervisor, school district police chief, city police chief, and county sheriff (Uvalde is the county seat). Thinking the worst, Abbott may have told the assigned Texas Dept. of Public Safety officers (state police) to keep a lid on all negative info until after the last burial and after Biden leaves town on Sunday.

357 Back in boy scouts at summer camp, we used to do reenactments. Revolutionary war and civil war. The uniforms were shirts vs. skins. Big summer camps would have over hundreds of boys and they'd set us up roughly to approximate some skirmish in history but it was pretty chaotic. Everyone was armed with flour. It was a massive amount of flour. They must have had pallets of the stuff shipped in for this. So there were colonels and lieutenants and officers and all that and they all made battle plans and went over strategy with us but no one listened.

In the end, it was just two great masses of kids running full tilt at each other with bags of flour. You'd hit a few by throwing but you'd pick someone and smash him over the head with your bag as he did the same to you. If you were white you were a dead ghost.

Then you'd all swim in the lake. Summer!

Yeah, I figured as soon as I read it that was the case. I've hunted with a 30-06 my entire life and am used to the round, and it's still kind of crazy how that gun can be that heavy and still kick that much.

I don't know if it's true or not but I saw a YouTube video that said a last minute change of personnel caused binoculars to be left behind. Had these binoculars been there, the tragedy might have been avoided. Kind of a for want of a nail the kingdom was lost story.

I've shot the garand twice. Don't own one but had a nice older fella at the range let me send some lead. Just a big round with a wooden stock.

Still loved it. Crazy accurate with irons.

If I was a crazy tinfoilest I would start thinking that the crazy guy was protected and groomed, then when he was ripe and armed with rifles he was herded up to the school, pushed to enter, given a wide berth to kill as many as possible, and all the power invested in the local law was devoted to preventing anyone from going inside to stop it. You can't say the police weren't active. They seem to have been veeeeeery active.

I think that's part of what I like about both it and the Carbine, too. My eyes aren't what they used to be, and I'm always shocked that I can make steel ring at 100 yards with the iron sights on the carbine.

The history and accuracy and appeal of the old-timey style of weapon just does it for me.

It's possible that it was just the closest place to him at the time. Had he been near a grocery store ( or mall, or where ever) that would have been what he shot up.

I think the story is going to be a sh!t-ton of errors before and during the incident by everyone except the poor students and their parents. The loser knew what he was doing - he went to the rear door of the rear-most building of the Robb Elementary complex - a long ways from the front office area. I expect more pain will be coming for the families of the slain when the details are made public. I think the core problem will be that no one thought anything like this could ever occur at Robb Elementary or any other Uvalde school.
