The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. Doug Larson

Quote II

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after. Henry David Thoreau

Quote III

Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in old clothes. Don Marquis

The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM

If your trusty toothbrush has been with you for so long that you can’t even remember buying it, you might want to trot on down to the nearest drugstore posthaste.

According to the American Dental Association—not to mention countless dentists and toothbrush manufacturers—we should all be replacing our toothbrushes (or toothbrush heads, if your brush is electric) about every three to four months. And if the bristles look frayed earlier than that, feel free to do it more frequently. The advice isn’t just a marketing ploy by Big Dental to get you to shell out more bucks on brushes. For one, overused bristles can’t scrub plaque from your pearly whites as effectively, and they can also be rough on your gums

What goes through one's mind. Oh never mind I don't want to know. Genius Award Winner.

AY 26--Proving again that Florida Man + Speedo = trouble, a 64-year-old retiree was arrested Tuesday for allegedly exposing himself to a female beachgoer, according to a police report.

Investigators say Charles Hixon was busted Tuesday afternoon for indecent exposure following an incident at Sunset Beach in Tarpon Springs, a Tampa suburb.

Hixon was in the water “about knee deep wearing a Speedo” when he pulled down the front of his swimsuit and exposed his penis, cops allege. Hixon, seen above, was allegedly “holding it in his hand” while staring and grinning at the 28-year-old victim, who was on the beach.

44 I watched the remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair" last night.

As always with these incessant retreads, the original was better. Much better. But I realized after thinking about it that both movies are dumb, and for the same reason... Dunaway/Russo's character.

Both movies make no sense to anyone who knows about thieves, money, art or rich people. That's fine... Any heist movie requires an industrial-strength disbelief suspension. The part where that suspension can't bear the weight is that character

Thomas Crown is this unprincipled, thrill-seeking & debonair rich guy who can never find a woman exciting enough to shake his ennui. If they made his foil a crooked cop who sleeps with the enemy, it could work... For '70s & '80s Hollywood. In the '60s and '90s, studios and audiences *needed* the cop to be good.

If they made her another thief out to get his treasure, but who finds the real treasure in his pants, that could've worked at any time. In either case, she should be super hot and naughty looking... Maybe Olga Kurylenko.

But they made her a boring but slutty... insurance adjuster of middling to fair looks. This is too much. It never made sense as a movie.

75 I know this was covered extensively earlier in the day, but Sussman was a total wash. I've seen comments all over that Durham was able to put the whole thing together, exposing Hillary's grubby little fingers stirring the pot. If a tree falls in the forest but nobody hears it... Same principle: if dear Hils is exposed as the God awful lying grifter she is but no one except conservative news sites cover it, what good does it do? Just a couple days ago, some ass tossed out the Charleston good people on both sides lie, and everyone shrugged. It's simply part of the woke received wisdom. Your average LIV isn't going to do the slightest amount of research, merely swallowing whatever the crap news put out there today.

I was watching a video about those or tally sticks. They were sticks you made a number of marks on down its length to record things like taxes paid or land traded. Then you'd take a knife to split it along its length such that the marks could be seen on both halves. It was kind of the first carbon copy. You'd take a half and the kingdom would take a half. At one point a building in London got do full of them that they decided to just destroy them all. So they just started burning them all in a furnace that got out of control and burned down most of the palace at west minister.

101 The good citizens of Uvalde need to rise up as one, and soundly denounce every cop who was on duty and on site, that fateful day.

Demand resignations, deputize the citizens for however long it takes to hire a new cadre of experienced, proven officers from any Texas department.

And I deeply suspect a rot of "woke" emimating from the Uvalde City Council. After all, the current Uvalde ISD chief, himself a Beto donor, was recently elected to said council. That said, it's encouraging that the City is delaying swearing in a new council till blurry facts come into sharper focus.

All of those disgraced cops need to take themselves, and their careers, far away. Uvalde need to embrace the practice of Shunning, and Shunning HARD.

I think I have decided that lying is the one single thing that has fucked this country over. Ever since Billy Jeff and his bullshit defense of the indefensible, nobody seems to be able to just tell the damned truth, and everything just gets worse. People lie when they don't have to, they lie because they made a mistake, or they were ignorant, or whatever portion of the human condition they may be experiencing.

Just tell the damned truth, own up, fix the mistake, apologize to those who were hurt or lost, and get on with it. Lying just makes it worse for everyone, even the liar.

160 This is the attitude that is required to repair our culture. Those cops were happy to cash their paychecks when nothing was required of them.

It's an easy attitude to grow, when people fly flags, show bumper stickers, and say shit like "whatever it takes for that brave office to get home to his family at night".

They were deified, and they believed it after a while. More skepticism is what is necessary. Which isn't going to happen from the traditional Right. Because "back the blue" is a virtue signal.

161 The story of the burning of the old parliament building in 1837 is hilarious, and also the inspiration for one of Turner's great paintings. The burning of the tally sticks overheated the chimney flues, and fire started in the attic crawl spaces. But it smoldered for most of a day before anyone noticed. Why so long? A board of inquiry was held to determine why. (Cont'd)

In the old days, they used to use vacuum motor powered wipers. Now, if vacuum got low, like in a loaded truck going uphile at WOT, they wouldn't work so hot. So, some put a hand crank. Others did not.

Back in the '70s, my father still used to run this old trap F-500, with vacuum wipers. Going up a hill, they'd stall, but no hand crank. If it was really raining, you'd have to let off, and let vacuum build up. That meant losing your momentum and having to downshift.

A neighbor had an old trap Chevy truck in the same boat. He rigged some twine, so he could pull them back and fro when needed.

You are right - Travis County whipped up so many politically driven "investigations" that the Lege finally took the power of investigating public officials away from local government completely. It now belongs to the Texas Rangers, who are organizationally a branch of the DPS. The most significant aspect is that the Rangers now report directly to the Governor, not to anyone else.

235 Back in the '70s, my father still used to run this old trap F-500, with vacuum wipers.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 31, 2022 11:04 PM (Mzdiz)

It is really astounding, how many kludges the auto makers used, to try make vacuum wipers work when the engine wasn't making vacuum. You had vacuum reservoirs, kind of a mind-bending concept, that, a tank to hold nothing. You had vacuum-booster fuel pumps, with a second diaphragm to suck air, and even electric vacuum pumps. All to avoid putting a two-dollar electric motor on the windshield wipers. Trico must have had some shit-hot hookers servicing the auto company engineers.

The point is that *is* what the citizens pay them for. Their unwillingness to do so means they are of no value and their pay should be refunded entirely, at a minimum.

I actually snagged an electric vacuum pump at a swap meet a few years ago. That's how I know they existed. Makes a certain degree of sense; the vacuum wiper system is already in place, so you can make it a little better by adding on the electric pump. But real electric wiper motors were available at least as early as 1940, and probably before then.

274 1970s Dodges did not suffer the poor vacuum characteristics of the contemporary Ford or Chevy vehicles.

Because most 1970s Dodges sucked. Yep, they'd run like a bat outta hell, but when interior pieces are falling off while the car is being shipped to the dealer, that's a pretty good sign of suckage.

Oddly though, their upscale cars, such as a Chrysler Imperial, actually DID have a better build quality, but a Plymouth Duster was already self-disassembling it's interior, which made installing a roll-bar, all the easier. Dodge D-100 trucks solved this by basically having nothing IN the interior, other than the seats, steering wheel and window cranks. And boy howdy, did those doors and windows RATTLE, from day one!

Hmm... still bulkier and more expensive than a vacuum cylinder and piston, I'd think. You can put the vacuum pump where there's room for it and just run a hose, while the motor either has to be on-site or else connected to the site through a linkage.

Oscillators that high used a lot of energy, and caused wear and tear, and they claim they've worked the bugs out, and have something that will last 60 hours and keeps time to 0.3 s per day.

Anyway, the dude says "confucius say that men who try to take assault rifles will face men with battle rifles". It took some years before I figured out what he meant.

302 > Small motors for automotive use, like heater fans and wipers, were series-wound universal motors well into the 1970's.

Hmm... still bulkier and more expensive than a vacuum cylinder and piston, I'd think. You can put the vacuum pump where there's room for it and just run a hose, while the motor either has to be on-site or else connected to the site through a linkage.

Same basic theory as with hydraulics.

One of the signs of being in over your head is focusing on the ONE thing you can control. In this case it appeared to be "keep civilians out by any means necessary to keep them safe"

Doesn't have to make sense, doesn't have to work, just has to be something to focus the mind on, and be approved of by superiors at some time in the past.
We are seeing a lot of that nowadays.

The vacuum motors were semi-circular housings made of die-cast zinc alloy. Radius was about 2 inches. Mostly, there was no vacuum "pump"; vacuum came from a tap on the engine's intake manifold. Slightly less bulky than an electric motor of the same capacity, but engine compartments of the day were scarcely crowded. Both vacuum and electric motors used linkage rods to the wiper spindles. The one "advantage" of the vacuum motors was that their speed could be regulated by the manual control valve.

If there is only one way in, and the entry team doesn't have ballistic shields, then they are going into the "fatal funnel". One guy with a rifle can slaughter an entire team before they get a single shooter through the door. Yep. Starter on the floor used to be the rule, not the exception. Some makes had it operated by depressing the clutch pedal, and some by depressing the accelerator, and some had an independent floor button. Usually, you used the key to turn on the ignition, and then stepped on the starter. Some old Detroit 2-cycle diesels could run backwards easily. Not very well, but they could do it. The design was a blower, a big supercharger that blew air into ports off the side of the cylinder on the downstroke.

Turning it backwards, that blower would suck, and it would suck intake air in through the exhaust. Governor wouldn't work right either. I remember hearing talk of kickback trying to start one, that resulting in it starting backwards. They couldn't shut it off. The shut-off was an air-valve, which wouldn't work backwards.

They were trying to cram shit in the exhaust to choke it down. Didn't work, and someone just cut the fuel line, IIRC to finally kill it.

I just got to reading about these fancy watches. The "quartz revolution" almost killed the Swiss mechanical watch industry. Well, low and middle-end. Up until that time, they had just about a monopoly on watches and time pieces, or at least the biggest market share.

They didn't adapt too well, and they lost 2/3 of their watchmakers and employed. The Swiss call this the "quartz crisis".

On the high end, there's been a resurgence of demand for high precision mechanical watches. The remaining high-send Swiss watchmakers are doing pretty well, now.

If you want a Purdy, and have to ask how much they cost, well, you can't afford one. If you don't and can, you request James Purdy and Sons to please make you one.

You will be vetted. They don't want just anybody as their customers. If you pass muster, they will fly you out to London. You'll be put up in the best hotels and then a limo will drive you out to their foundry.

You will shoot, while they take all sorts of measurements. Imagine all sorts of computer imagining and laser imagining taking pictures of your shooting stance, how you hold a rifle, and all that.

The rifle will be custom made for you. After that, maybe in a year, you can come pick you rifle.

Prince Harry threw that away.

422 Holland & Holland is *slightly* more accessible to buy than a Purdy. Pretty much the same process, but H&H builds it's doubles on actions (gasp!) Made in Spain (trade secret), and finished in London.

Similarly, it's bolt rifles are on Mauser '98 commercial actions, of exacting quality control standards. Barrels & stocks are British, of course.

Like Purdey though, you're going to be flown there, hoteled, fed, fitted and measured to the n'th degree. A bespoke British gun is worth an average house's mortgage, if you're lucky.

Speaking of Bulova space watches, a Bulova worn by David Scott on the surface of the Moon sold for $1.6M a while back. It's the only Bulova that even gets close that territory.

Omega won the NASA contract for "space watches" -- Bulova was in the competition, and they got chosen as some "backups" or something. Anyway, Scott cracked the crystal on his Omega, and used the Bulova backup.

NASA had been very meticulous about trying to keep this stuff out of private hands for auction, but this Bulova slipped through their clutches somehow.

We went to the Moon. Period. I remember a video of some of the best CGI guys in Hollywood looking at all the details of the Apollo photos and videos talking about how much trouble it would take to fake all that. Impossible, even at today's tech.

It's all in the little details of lighting, and the effects like perfect parabolic arcs of the moon dust flying off the rover wheels.

And the details of the 1/6th g effects you see. No too easy to duplicate that with SFX to the degree of detail you see.

If it's on a sound stage on earth, you've got 1 g. Not too easy to slow that down, and still have normal speed for everything else.

448 Yeah. Thousands of Ham operators on earth verified every transmission, vector, frequency, amplitude, azimuth and other electro-physcial transmission artifacts, throughout the entire mission(s).

They all concurred. The signals came from the transition phases, lunar orbit and lunar landing phases. And later Apollo laser reflector targets bear this out.

Ain't no faking the physics, ain't no jinking the signal.

We. Went. To. The. Moon., and RETURNED. More'n once't, too!

Jim, I wanted to put 'posted by Ned Beatty' but I couldn't remember his name though I could picture his face. I blame statins for memory lapses. That was a great movie.

I also remember Ned in Hopscotch where the FBI agents (he is one too) are shooting up a house and suddenly he says "But that's my house!"

457 The whole 'the moon landing was faked' conspiracy theory is great and all that but I think those kinds of conspiracy theories are designed to make real conspiracies hide amidst the noise; it makes all conspiracy theories negatively equal, so to speak.

After Epstein didn't kill himself, besides his procurer henchwoman, just what 'client' has been arrested, much less put on trial? It's just a conspiracy theory that there is a cabal of pedophiles in high positions of political/economic power across the globe pulling strings to achieve The Great Reset.

Some people find the latter conspiracy 'theory' harder to believe than the moon landing one. I guess that's because the latter one is so vast that they can't wrap their minds around it while the former is low hanging fruit what with all the video 'evidence'. Plus, it's easier to believe the US government lied about the landing than acknowledge we actually did it.

I think lefty conspiracy theories are just that, theories. But righty conspiracy 'theories' end up being proven true, time and time again, i.e., Trump was spied on, critics of the Clintons seem to mysteriously die, gay marriage was a slippery slope, et al.

LLR, lunar laser ranging, has verified General Relavity to unprecedented precision. Kenneth Nordtvedt, one of the high priests of experimental General Relativity and Gravitation has used that to show the Moon is within 2 cm of where General Relativity predicts it will be, the limits of precision. They have been working on getting it down to mm precision.

He's verified the Strong Equivalence Principle and frame-dragging/gravitomagnetism to high precision using it.

The astronauts put laser reflectors on the Moon. They bounce lasers off them all the time. Been doing so for decades, and have verified the gravitational motion of the earth-moon system with that to very high precision.

On the Moon, in 1/6th g, the Moonwalkers learned the "bunny hop" was the best method of locomotion, Gene Cernan illustrated that here:

You want to fake that on a sound stage, with 1969 tech? Good luck.

Walking wasn't too efficient under those conditions. They learned that bunny hop was the best way to do it.

470 About NASA - I wonder what the policy was should one of the Moonwalkers die. Do they bring the body back (stink) or leave it on the Moon, or forever orbiting the Moon? Did they ever say?

Posted by: Ciampino at June 01, 2022 03:15 AM (qfLjt)

471 >> Did they ever say?

I'm sure they had contingency plans. They'd didn't say. I guess Apollo 13 came the closest to needing that.

I don't know if they every had suicide pills -- they probably did. But I don't know for sure. I'm remember reading some of the astronauts said they'd just vent the atmosphere to space, as they would be a quick way to die if something catastrophic happened. Others said they'd stay alive as long as possible, sending data all the way.

I was looking, you wouldn't believe how much research has been done on the "bunny hop" and the most efficient method of human locomotion on the Moon.

Turns out the bunny hop was the most metabolically efficient. The Moonwalkers just naturally figured it out. On Earth, with 1g, that's not very efficient. On the Moon, with the spacesuit configuration, it was very efficient.

NASA claims to have invented some spacesuits that will allow efficient normal walking on the Moon now, but only a true real-Moon test can confirm that.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 01, 2022 03:20 AM (Mzdiz)

473
Basically, walking (and running) is controlled falling. You lean forward, fall, and move your leg to catch the fall. Rinse, repeat. You're walking.

On the Moon, with the stiffness of the pressure space suits vs actual weight, the force of gravity, that equation gets all fucked up.

Long story, but the little bunny hop was the most efficient way to move given all the conditions, 1/6th g and the spacesuit restraints.

Posted by: Ciampino at June 01, 2022 03:31 AM (qfLjt)

477
Re Mars suits: there is an idea, which would work, of using some strong elastic material for most of the body. The helmet would be pressurized, with breathing mixture, but the rest of the suit would not.

Think compression hose on steroids. Very tight fabric. In under normal pressure, you couldn't move, but in Mars pressure, you could move just fine.

That's one of the ideas.

Interesting, though I think claustrophobia would be an even bigger factor with tight suits. As it is living in a very small space will be a terrible psychological problem over time.

Posted by: Ciampino at June 01, 2022 03:46 AM (qfLjt)

479
One of the advantages of these mechanical counter-pressure designs is they would be very form fitting. So, space babes will have their boobies and butts quite accentuated on the surface of Mars.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 01, 2022 03:48 AM (Mzdiz)

No, Trigglypuff in such a suit would not go over too well.

I'm also thinking, you probably need on hell of a jock strap there to keep from squeezing things too much.

In smoking this over, I see they're working on some controlled tightness system. That is, allow you to don the suit in full atmosphere and only tighten up as needed when external pressure drops.

If you're interested, look up the history of space suits. Not a trivial design problem at all. The Apollo space suits were a marvel of engineering. They were pressurized to just 3.7 psi absolute, pure O2. Note that's just a little bit over the partial pressure of O2 at sea level. That's what your breathing depends on.

Very low absolute pressure. Your in balloon, under pressure, but you need to move your joints. You can read the details of how that was engineered. You want as low an absolute pressure as you can stand.

Also, cooling. In vacuum, cooling ain't so efficient. The Apollo moon suit backpacks, the PLSS (personal life support system) had water cooling. There was very clever self-regulation ice sublimation system that provided the cooling. It had a porous plate that would sublimate ice to vacuum. Too hot, and it would sublimate away. Too cold, and it would shut down. All of this was regulated via the size of some pores on a metal plate. Totally passive.
