The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Calvin Coolidge knew it; Ronald Reagan knew it; Donald Trump knows it. Just get the hell out of the way, and people will produce and create and make things better. The only true function of government is to keep the next kingdom over the hill from taking our stuff!

Meir Kohn's "Commerce-Predation Theory" recognizes that, and also recognizes that government can be an impediment to internal commerce.

Gee...I wonder whether we can find an example of that!

Rethinking Economics: An Interview with Professor Meir Kohn

The simplified version of my theory is that economic progress is a result of the interaction between commerce and production, which I call the accelerator. However, the brake is predation. It is what holds economic progress back. Government is historically, and most often, the source of predation, but governments can also play a role in protecting against predation

The interview is with "The Dartmouth Review," which for all of its impressive pedigree often comes off as...um...a college newspaper. Which it is, but it is a conservative paper in the belly of the beast, so they deserve some credit.

Kohn's description of the evolution of the Chinese economy is fascinating, as is his recognition that government is often a malign influence that goes beyond monetary policy. Government is the enemy of commerce, and government bureaucrats have no reason to be the benign guides that they claim to be.

I suspect that the only thing you need to do to become a commercial region is to allow it to happen. It will happen eventually if you don’t prevent it, and the government is the one preventing it by predating and suppressing commerce.

But Kohn doesn't differentiate between peoples. Western European immigrants to North America created an incredible economy (and society), yet in vast swathes of the world with ample natural resources...there was nothing!

I wonder whether the understandable awareness of the existence of the jack-booted thugs of leftist counter-culture has limited this analysis.

That's my guess.

36 Democrats (like the Biden crowd) often talk about government building things, or making investments. Copying the language of commerce, they obviously hope to get some credit from voters when the economy is doing well.

But governments by definition can only stand in the way of people building things, of people who want to invest. That's what governments do. So, obviously, be judicious in how much government you allow.

The root of the issue is corporate social responsibility, which has been a thing since at least the 80s when business schools and activists have convinced corporate leadership to spend stockholder money on charitable giving in order to increase the goodwill of the public's perception of the company.

Whether it works or not has never been proven, but it has become part of the corporate dogma since the current CEOs were in business school. It's always been a giant crock, but it's ultimately a standard line item on large budgets. That the activists in charge of the money are getting screwier with the freedom the situation allows them is as much a comment on our current cultural moment than anything else.

87 The root of the issue is corporate social responsibility, which has been a thing since at least the 80s when business schools and activists have convinced corporate leadership to spend stockholder money on charitable giving in order to increase the goodwill of the public's perception of the company.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, fighting the system with Kobayashi at May 24, 2022 11:17 AM

There's nothing bad at all about corporate responsibility and giving back. It's a good thing. Like rehabbing a playground, cleaning up old properties, donating to causes like senior citizens. We had a local bank that gave homes to veterans. But then these derps with the checkbook decide to go waaaay outside the norm, thinking it will help the company image when it actually hurts it. 40% (!!!), so far. All from an advertising decline yet to be measured. The idea seems to be that in an inflationary environment, consumers will have less money to spend on retail products so retail companies will advertise less. Boom, goes the market.

Biden has no idea what he's unleashed. His "transition" is going to work out far differently for Democrats than he believes. 116 The drug trade is one of the finest examples of the profitability of unregulated commerce.

Without a corporate structure, it more or less created a multi-national, diversified industry with economies of scale, multi-tiered marketing, and transportation, often combining multiple culture to work together for the successful implementation of its business model.

It is employee owned and provides a path to upward mobility from low tier employees into management level, and is nimble in adapting to various market environments and business impediments.

Raiding is often by private parties. The perhaps unintended implication in the original quote is that absent government, that is in an anarchic state, predation would be greatly reduced. On the contrary, it is simply a state of continual warfare. And in proportion to the instability of a government there is banditry.

Agree but disagree. Company image can be huge. It's proven time and time again that ff one has warm fuzzies they are more likely to buy a product and therefore it's worth it for the company. Now do they really care about a playground getting rebuilt? Not from a pure standpoint, it's advertising and marketing, plain and simple. 151 "Government is historically, and most often, the source of predation, but governments can also play a role in protecting against predation"

The anti-trust laws are (at least in theory) helpful and necessary, as I see it. Google, Facebook, Twitter are good examples of why ... "there can be only one" is sorta true for social media though, and the Google Archipelago distorts and censors at will.

But in many ways, government has gotten involved in BigCorporate, as they provide free research and pass off the resulting product to the "entrepreneur".

The Fauci millions of graft/kicks from BigPharma is another (corrupt and murderous) accelerator that had no brakes. The government forced the product on people, AND paid for it (bill due for the taxpayer, no choice in the matter).

There is a big domestic role for government, but also room for BigCorruption. They forced expensive treatments (remdesivir, vax) and made cheap effective treatments illegal. That is an accelerant for the inflation fires.

153 I remember riding at night with my young son in El Paso. We were at a spot where you could look down on the city and over into Mexico. I asked him to look at the lights. El Paso was all lit up, Juarez was very dark. This was in the 90s so it might be different now.

I explained to him that the only difference between the two was that Mexico was a different country with a different government and culture. Pretty much everything else was the same.

I really detest a lot of Chinese culture and the CCP itself is abhorrent, but I often feel compelled to point out that the PRC is doing a lot of things right that the West is either neglecting or deliberately fucking up.

Comparing virtually any Western city to the handful of actually nice Chinese cities - it's really no contest which are safer and more pleasant to take your kids out on an evening shopping excursion. That doesn't mean they can expand that, or even keep it up - but the undeniable truth is that they're currently headed in one direction and we're headed in an entirely different one.

The CCP is currently reeling a lot of things in and preparing for war, unrest, and dissent - no telling how this will affect their middle class areas.

Spain, Portugal, Ottoman Empire and China failed to develop it through a number of reasons, but mostly because what was required to excel at it was to disrupting for the cultures and economies of those states.

It was one of the few TV ads nowadays which did not make the man out to be a schlub or a wimp. For an example of the latter, see the CashNetUSA spot where the ceiling collapses, the guy practically faints ("What shall we do???"), and the woman knows all about getting a loan through CashNetUSA. The cartoon even shows her as a superhero. Damned annoying.

Because it didn't subscribe to that trope, the original "Jake" spot was a classic for that reason alone.

Seriously that's her character. The comic is mostly "her dorky group of conspicuously diverse friends sit around and talk" Strangely this got canceled after a few dozen issues due to poor sales.

224 As part and parcel of a continuing thingy, MS has decided to dump the state income tax (gradually, to be sure). Having seen the progress of other states with limited tax structures, we have decided to join the growth bandwagon. I applaud this hitching to the smart wagon.

This is a Republican initiative, and a welcome one. Here's a surprising thing about MS law that almost no one knows about -- MS was among the very first to decriminalize pot possession for first time offenders. Less than an ounce, first offense... All the cops could do is issue a ticket. $250 fine, max.

I bet you haven't viewed MS under that light.

None of the Dominion voting machines were powered up (at 7:00 a.m.), so three minutes to vote turned into 25 minutes.

I had to go in town to have labs done for my physical next week, and there was a line outside the church when I came back on the island. Will wait for a couple of hours for things to slow down.

Bad news is it took three weeks for the adjuster to get to the body shop, and the manager said that's about par for the course. They seem to think one adjuster can cover a couple states. Top it off, when I was on my way home and hit the critter a big hail storm roared through the area, so the already busy guy got busier.

The original idea was to let people vote on if someone was hot, basically a glorified Hot Or Not. And something liberals would find deeeeeply offensive if it happened today.

294 If you get hit by a dude with Geico and Geico tried to deny payment, that shows Geico is a good insurer. The less they pay the lower your rates.

Ive had Geico, Allstate, SafeCo and Farmers. And had claims with all. They’re all basically the same thing. It’s like airlines.

That's not how this works, that's not how any of it works.

295 The hot or not thing inspired the idea of Facebook. But FB was never meant to just be that. I hate Cuck as much as the next guy but let’s not pretend what he did wasn’t pretty revolutionary.

296 Yes that’s how it works. If you get into an accident and you’re at fault you want your insurance company (Geico in this case) to fight for you, ie not pay out.

297 "Milana" wouldn't be a bad name for a female Siberian cat.

298 Corruption is also predation. All predation should be looked at as a tax.

300 He wrote most of the original Microsoft BASIC (and parts of GW-BASIC), but he also was about the only person in the industry to understand early on that businesses really wanted cheap interchangeable computers

Yeah Gates was more than a lucky guy, he was a genuine programmer and software engineer. And he had vision that almost everyone lacked in the industry. I know Apple fans like to think he was just some idiot who stumbled into a good thing but he was more than that.

301 We created the world's most exceptional country by virtue of adherence to the political system devised by the Founding Fathers.

It produced an extraordinary populace unequaled in any other continent. It's all still there, currently layered with the filth the left is responsible for.

It simply needs cleansing.

302 Culturally, Capitalism (the ability to freely trade with others, uncoerced) is only possible in a Judeo-Christian society. Resource-rich Islamic countries are always feudal crapholes. And the further you move away from the American republic, the less prosperous lower classes become, just as the further we've moved from our republican roots the less prosperous the lower classes become.

303 You KNOW what stops predators. Sunlight and bracelets.

When any government can spend a trillion dollars, or $40 billion in a few hours with no oversight, the money sloshing around moves plenty of people. Get mine!

Hiring someone for $20/week requires you file a 1099-misc to the IRS.

Do you think government will be filing 1099-GOV for giving away 20x as much? Sunshine.

If we knew the median 1099-GOV that could become the base TAX CREDIT for every American! Government in a feedback loop! Finally!
