Ace of Spades Pet Thread, May 28

hrsenpub.jpg

From Tim, via Misanthropic Humanitarian:

One of the advantages of frequenting a pub in rural Alberta is the horse visitors.

Good afternoon and welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. Ask someone for a treat, kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

Here are some additional possibilities for Livestock as Companion Animals, if you don't have room for a horse:

Wildlife as companion animals:

Hrothgar had a question for The Horde about last week's discussion of Why dogs are very good boys.

One question I had related to the fascinating dog genetics article was to wonder if anyone was looking to track the domestication gene for the cases where someone (Russians I think) had taken wild wolf pups, raised them domestically, and culled them for sociability. IIRC, such pups became much more "dog"-like in only a few generations. Don't think this has been done with coyotes? I should have posted this question on the Pet Thread itself, but . ..

Meet The PetMorons

chummleyy.jpg

This is Chumley our garage kitty....sitting where he knows he is Not Allowed! He is a stray who adopted Drago. Featured before here on the pet thread. They are buddies, though at times it's hard to tell. Drago will drag him by the scruff of the neck and use him as a chew toy. I will find Drago with deep scratches on his snout. Chumley gives as good as he gets. No one holds a grudge, apparently. Barbara usually throws a rug on my bike to prevent Chumley from putting little holes on my seat.

vdoggeh is usually so fluffy but here is a pic of him just after a haircut.
Love the pet thread!

Thanks!

I think he still looks distinguished.

From long time lurker and rare poster Scont.

Even my cat Marilyn B. Plopenpet (For her habit of running up to me, falling over on her side, PLOP, and insisting on being petted). is a Trump fan.

Back story: I was brushing her and had a big pile of fur. I flattened it into a toupee and put it on her head. An absolute miracle that she held still long enough for me to snap a picture

Yes, you were lucky!

From Cooper:

I had to put our part Bichon/ Bassett Hound, Kobe, down last week. He was 15 years old and suffering from near blindness, doggy dementia, and a few other things. The Kobster was a great little guy who had a mind of his own, he loved to run through the house with a crushed water bottle in his mouth daring anyone to try and take it. He was a good boy and a great companion, it really hurts not having him but he is in a better place. I'm glad my wife and I took him in 5 years ago when my mom could no longer take care of him.

What a sweet photo. So sorry for your loss.

Captain Josepha Sabin sent in some photos for Caturday:

I owned a bookstore for eighteen years, and these were my bookstore cats.

The gray tiger and the white longhair were littermates, Sam and Ella. (Think about it a moment, and you will get the joke. It only took me three days.) I woke up one morning to discover that my oldest son had moved back home in the middle of the night with two half grown cats. When I kicked him out six months later, I kept the cats because I refused to drive halfway across Omaha every morning to feed, water, and clean kitty litter. I already had two cats and two dogs at home, so I took Sammy ad Ella down to the bookstore. The first day, they were terrified and hid. The second day, they marched up to the first customer who came through the door and demanded to be petted. For twelve and a half years, they ran the bookstore, assuming that anyone who stopped by was there to visit them. I got very used to hearing, "Hey, Sam! Hey, Ella! Oh, hi, Sabin, didn't notice you over there." They upstaged every author who came to the bookstore, one sitting in front of the author, the other on the author's books. Thankfully, the authors got as big a kick out of their antics as my customers. Of course, the inevitable happened. I don't know who was more devastated, me or my regulars.

For over a year, the bookstore was cat free. I finally got tired of the kvetching and got the orange tabby (Rosy) and the tuxedo (Tiger), again littermates, from the Humane Society. They happily moved in and took up right where Sammy and Ella left off. About a year later, I inherited the Himalayan, KatyDid. Tiger never had a problem with Katy, but Rosy hated her with the heat of a hundred suns. Poor little Katy was terrified of Rosy. I titled the picture of the three of them on my desk "Why Sabin never gets anything done." It was one of the rare occasions Rosy let Katy get within a country mile of her.

When I closed the bookstore, I brought all three cats home to join another cat and two dogs. Sadly, all of them have gone off to play elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing the photos and memories of your popular kitties!

Nalo oo.png

I am very sorry to advise that Nalo, my wife's wonderful seeing-eye dog, passed over the rainbow bridge Saturday evening, May 14th.

She was a lovable Labrador and a good guide dog.

Nalo had many trips with us, including Cape Cod, Colorado, Monterey, Coronado, St. Louis, North Carolina, Maryland and locally. One of her nicknames was the "Flying Labrador".

She always looked forward to her walks. She had many doggie friends in the neighborhood.

We miss her terribly. She was 12.5 years old was a guide-dog for 10.5 years.

Thanks,

Bruce and Laurie

What a terrible loss. What a beautiful dog. No wonder you loved her.

Love those PetMorons! Thank you for sharing your pets with us. We have a couple more left for next week.

If you would like to send pet and/or animal stories, links, etc. for the Ace of Spades Pet Thread, the address is:

Remember to include the nic or name by which you wish to be known at AoSHQ, or let us know if you want to remain a lurker.

Until next Saturday, have a great week!

If you start feeling nostalgic, here a link to last week's Pet Thread, May 21. It includes some great pet photos and stories, and some information on doggy genetics. The comments are closed now so you won't accidentally ban yourself by trying to comment on a week-old thread, but don't try it anyway.

5 Seeing eye dogs are so awesome. I knew a couple of them. They were all business when their harness was on, but as soon as it was off and they were given the nod, they were big, dopey dogs. So fun to see the transition.

My old church, guy had a seeing eye dog. In harness, good boy. Out of harness, charging around, looking for anyone who'd give him a good scratch, which was pretty much anyone in the congregation.

I understood random people aren't supposed to play with service dogs. But maybe that's only when they're in harness.

When we used to do Civil War reenacting there was a couple that trained helper monkeys and they would bring the monkeys with them to events to socialize them and get them used to loud noises. Kept them in a netted play pen deal but they were allowed out to play at times, fun stuff.

Posted by: Northernlurker, surgite

When service dogs are "on duty" you're supposed to ignore them completely.

But if they are off duty, and their person says it's ok, then they are allowed to be dopey dogs and you can interact with them. You have to follow the owner's lead.

11 Our neighbor has chickens and one of them started laying a daily egg in an old cat carrier we keep on the back porch, as a shelter for stray cats in winter. WE covered it with plastic and put newspaper inside. So a week ago my daughter got back from work and went to check for eggs and instead came back in with two 6 to 7 week old gray kittens she found in the carrier.
They were well received by all the inside cats and have already visibly grown and roam all over the house. BTW no egg.

14 The Russian Farm-Fox Experiment was able to take wild foxes held in captivity (allegedly for their fur) and, over the course of 15 generations or so, by selecting only for tameness, was able to create a domesticated fox. The most interesting thing about the experiment is that the coat coloring completely changed!

Posted by: Rick Yarnell at May 28, 2022 03:46 PM (WlkuX)

15 I think the domestication question is referring to the Siberian fox experiment.

Thanks for the responses. I was going from a very fallible longtime memory that the experiment had been done with wolves, but with there being a coloring change in the downstream domesticated foxes would seem to indicate that some genetic tinkering has indeed occurred. Not sure if anyone tried genetic testing of the specific domestication gene noted in the last weeks good dog article.
I'll try to do some independent research based on these tips!

Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar at May 28, 2022 04:08 PM (hOUT3)

22 Yes, I remember reading about the Siberian foxes. The Russians wanted tame foxes to make it easier to raise them for their fur. To the best of my recall, there was no genetic tinkering for fur color; the color spontaneously changed as the Russians were able to breed tamer and tamer foxes.

23 Our girl had some minor procedures done at the vet last week so she had to wear the Cone of Shame. It's our first experience with one since we adopted her last September. She Did Not Like It...at all.

But on Thursday morning we were finally able to take it off. Watching her race around the yard exulting in her freedom was glorious. I've had many good times in my life, but I wonder if I've ever felt that degree of unalloyed joy.

Also trap a feral tomcat tabby and had him fixed as well. They said he was 12#'s and about 5 yrs old. Guess that's the end of his 5 yr run. lol. This is the tom that would walked by my deck and gave me the look " eff U". I'm not kidding. I don't think he's the dad because none of the kittens are his color.

71 Anit- that was the case exactly. He is now in charge but he was asking to fix things that weren't broken. Because of my long standing friendship with his mother, I wormed and trimmed their feet as a courtesy and never billed extra for the service.

72 Is sonny boy satisfied with the vets report?

Posted by: Ronster at May 28, 2022 05:25 PM (6D3GA)

73 Ronster, he called me a couple of hours later and said "You know. I'm going to be sending you an additional stipend every month".

77 George and Gracie are named after the famous couple. Sonny Boy's Mom was George Burn's consort for several years. She had some great stories.

78 . Unclipped, he was just this big duffus. But after a clip, he acted more refined and civilized.

79 The thread about the Uter-o cereal reminded me of the time I brought two embalmed equine uteri home from CA in my carry on luggage.

That's where I learned to use the shoulder length examination gloves.

84 Our daughter's cat, Anubis, died in my lap Thursday evening (we were expecting it). He is now with "his" girl, Michelle, and I am sure that they are running around hunting lizards and snakes.

85 Condolences to those who had to say goodbye to their good friends and may we all meet them again, God willing. I'm still grieving my Rowdy dog and probably will for a long, long time. But I'm grateful I had such a fine boy as my companion.
