Citing estimates from JPMorgan, over the weekend Bloomberg wrote that courtesy of a Biden administration terrified of what soaring inflation will mean for the Democrats in the midterms, and a Fed that is determine to do anything - even crash the market and spark a recession - to do Joe Biden's "kill inflation" bidding, the US faces a new scary threat: a plunge in wealth which JPM estimates at least $5 trillion, and could reach $9 trillion by year-end. In short, the world’s richest nation is waking up to an unpleasant and unfamiliar sensation: It’s getting poorer... and worst of all, it's getting poorer at the behest of its own leaders. Since the start of the year, the S&P 500 Index is down 18%, the Nasdaq 100 has lost 27% and a Bloomberg index of cryptocurrencies has plunged 48%. That all amounts to “a wealth shock that is set to drag on growth in the coming year,” JPMorgan economists led by Michael Feroli wrote in a note Friday When you hear the word "obese" what do you think of? I bet it isn't about race. Woke Mob Wants To Cancel The Word “Obesity” Because It’s “Racist”… I'm a sportsman. I hunt and I fish. That's why we call it hunting and fishing, not shooting and catching. Utah hunting guide faces felony charge for Donald Trump Jr.’s big-game hunt Employees punched, kicked and weaponized a chair to fight off thieves armed with hammers during an attempted smash-and-grab heist on Sunday at a jewelry store in the Bella Terra shopping center in Huntington Beach. The thieves bolted into Princess Bride Diamonds at 7821 Edinger Ave around noon, police said. Four people dressed in dark clothing immediately used a hammer to smash a display case, as seen in surveillance footage the store shared in an Instagram story. The intruders had pulled into the outdoor mall’s parking lot in a Honda, said an employee at a nearby store who declined to give his name for safety reasons. He said he saw three or four people wearing ski masks and carrying hammers get out of the car. One of them was carrying a backpack with a camouflage print. “As soon as I saw them get out of the car, I knew they were going to rob Princess Bride,” he said. Why was VP Dan Quayle laughed at and VP Kamala "The San Francisco Headhunter" Harris and isn't? Harris mocked after saying “When we talk about the children of the community, they are a children of the community” Oh its because she's a chick of color. A good time could have been had by all. But no. Genius Award Winners. Plenty of them tonight. This year’s annual "go topless" Jeep weekend in Texas resulted in more than 100 arrests and dozens of people, including a sheriff’s deputy, sent to the hospital during the event attended by tens of thousands. More than 80,000 revelers attended the weekend-long event for Jeep enthusiasts at Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula, a popular beach destination in Galveston County, Texas. Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset told FOX 26 Houston that more than 100 people were arrested over the weekend, as deputies responded to multiple assaults, fights and DWIs. Had a funeral for a relative-by-marriage today: not someone I was really close to, but she was a very sweet Christian lady who endured a lot of suffering the last few years. Sad day, but one kinda heartening moment was when we set off in the funeral procession. Besides all the opposite traffic stopping for us, I saw a lot of people in the yards we passed get off their mowers and remove their caps for us.
So America is still America in places, thankfully. Posted by: Dr. T at May 23, 2022 10:17 PM (Vgw1E) Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at May 23, 2022 10:17 PM (/U27+) 97

I guess women used to wear a flappy puffy shirt but wanted show off their curves so they'd have a bodice on over it tightened up with rope/strings. Seems complicated. And once your done ripping the bodice there's still the puffy shirt and who knows what's waiting under that? It's like one of those Russian nesting dolls. Maybe it's just a display of strength like ripping a telephone book if you can actually get through all the layers. The lady is like, "you know what? You deserve it, come and get 'em"

If you 'missed' this event, you are in luck. There is a "Jeeping The Coast" event scheduled for MS 6/1 to 6/5. Last year, it was cancelled due to covid, but thousands still showed up the the non-event, many sporting t-shirts saying in essence "Fuck the cancellation". Oh yes, there were many Jeeps. Some topless. Posted by: GnuBreed at May 23, 2022 10:25 PM (F0YaR) 125

Interesting article in the Daily Mail.
The head of RT, Margarita Simonyan, said on a Russian news program, along with her usual threats of nuclear war: When people ask how long this will go on, in terms of our alienation, confrontation with the west, I see only one version of events: People, this is forever. Get used to this new life.' She said the 'brave new world' will no longer be open to people who want to study in the west, telling viewers to get used to Russia's growing isolation and saying people would be thankful their children did not study in western institutions in the future. In other words, Russia is going to turn back into the Soviet Union - no iPhones, no foreign vacations, no foreign media. It will be interesting how Russians react to this - Greg Yudin, a very perceptive professor in Moscow, noted that the relatively low level of protest in Russia was based on the assumption that this would all blow over in a few months (like it did after Crimea in 2014). Realizing that these changes are intended to be permanent may change public opinion. Posted by: The ARC of History! at May 23, 2022 10:27 PM (I2/tG) 134

I started driving in the 80s. I think I payed 40 some cents/gal once. But I started at the tail end of full service stations. I only made the mistake of going into the full side once. It was generally the one closer to the station. Well that was the only spot open and I pulled in. I got out and started doing stuff and some guy ran out to stop me. I would have left but this was the second station I'd been at so I just stood there watching him as he did exactly what I'd do. The only difference was he'd take cash and run it in to give me change. whooped-y-doo

So anyway, I vacationed in St Augustine, FL with a work friend I met in person for the first time 2 weeks ago (she lives oversees). We had lots of fun, and I didn't realize St Augustine was such a great tourist/vacation city. I mainly picked it because I wanted to be very close to the beach, but we ended up spending less than 2 hours on the beach, which was a few minutes walk from the rental.

But unless things have changed, Turkey is a popular travel destination still
Russian airlines no longer fly outside the former Soviet Union (they're afraid of having their planes seized), and there are just a handful of foreign flights into Russia. US Embassy Moscow keeps a daily tally of flights out of Moscow and St. Petersburg - there are a grand total of 15 flights out of Russia today, 9 to Turkey (5 of those flights are full). Only one flight to Antalya, which was the biggest tourist destination for Russians. No flights to Thailand, which used to be a big Russian tourist destination. That may change, but at the moment mass tourism from Russia is dead. Posted by: The ARC of History! at May 23, 2022 10:55 PM (I2/tG) 270

So I understand the desire to try to connect with it. My issue is with not bothering to even do a rudimentary amount of work to even try to be accurate or learn about it. You have people running around claiming they originated from Egypt, or ignoramuses like Oprah excitedly saying on one of her shows that she hoped she was Zulu. As a West African, I lost all respect for her when I watched that episode. It's like people want to claim everywhere except where they actually came from - West and Central Africa. I remember all the construction on the rare occasions a few years back when we'd take the 5 all the way through. Maybe luck, we tried to time everything well, but both trips, no traffic coming or going. Grand Central Market was great for lunch, right near location of our business to get done. Sad to see a day-time shooting near there last week. Was pretty mellow when we were there.

As a child growing up in the urban fringes of Los Angeles 1964, in a community named by my wife's G,G Grandfather, "La Crescenta", I witnessed one day a man, pulling up at the end of my street, in truck and horse trailer, to a vacant lot at the end of our street. He unloaded the horse, and then pulled an ol timey plow rig from his truck bed and after rigging up the horse, he plowed the vacant lot to fresh dark brown earth which by then was being watched by every kid on my street.
When he was done, he looked across the street at all of the assembled kids and stated, "My horse likes carrots and apples for a treat." We all ran home and gathered up quite a feast for that horse. I saw him again the next year and then never again as they built a house on that site soon after. Posted by: Nightwatch at May 23, 2022 11:05 PM (J00IM) 294

In Brazil the lack of diversity in family names, and the use of a few traditional first names by so many, led to the widespread use of nicknames. Otherwise you could yell "Maria Conceicao!" or "Joao da Silva!" in a crowded street and half the people would stop and look.

As for the bear baiting story, hunting laws must vary wildly by state, and maybe it depends on what you're hunting, but the ol' boyz 'round these parts plant turnips and all manner of things to draw the deer in. If I wanted to go catch salmon, I'd go fish for them when and where I knew they were moving. Bears do the same thing. If you are harvesting deer for food, baiting them just makes sense. It's one of the predatory advantages of being a human. If you are harvesting deer for heads to put on the wall to show what a skilled hunter you are, then it's like playing basketball against 8 year old girls, it really proves nothing. What gets me about these awful-sounding (and -spelled) names is that they don't MEAN anything. For thousands of years, parents have been giving their children names that mean something in their culture, reflects their circumstances or honors a loved one. Even illiterate tribes in Africa give their kids names that have meaning.

The amount of deer in Fairfax Co. is mindblowing. I never saw one, ever, growing up there in the 70's and early 80's when there was a lot more open space. Now, the last few times I've been back, they're everywhere. Is some evil wizard turning people into deer? There's so much less natural habitat for them.

> If you are harvesting deer for food, baiting them just makes sense. It's one of the predatory advantages of being a human.
Robert A. Heinlein told the story of how his 90-something grandfather died -- bulldogging a deer that was stuck in a hole in the ice on his frozen pond. He'd left the cabin without his gun, but could not afford to let that meat escape. He slipped and fell, and a point of the deer's antler went into his heart. As someone who depends upon wild food, I follow the rules but I don't make it any more "sporting" than it needs to be. I dipnet salmon so I can take up to 45 to stock the freezer.
