Top Story

  • Semiconductor research group IMEC has published a roadmap taking the industry far beyond 1nm. (Tom's Hardware)

The most advanced process currently in production (at TSMC and Samsung) is a nominal 4nm. Nothing about the process is truly 4nm, but it's as much 4nm as the old 14nm process was 14nm, so it's useful for comparison.

The roadmap looks forward to the 3nm and 2nm nodes that are already under development at TSMC, Samsung, and Intel - and then beyond all the way to what they call A2 - a nominal 0.2nm - sometime around 2036.

By which time I hope to be less concerned about annual increments in CPU performance, but faster computers let us solve problems that are too expensive to be practical at the moment, so this is a win even if you don't plan to put together a 26th generation Intel gaming rig with dual RTX 18080 Ti cards to play Minecraft 1.37.

There's not a lot of detail about the sub-1nm nodes, but at 2nm they expect a billion transistors per square millimetre - about 6 times the current 5nm process.

Tech News

  • Some next-gen AMD motherboards appear to have two chipsets. (Tom's Hardware)

There will be two chipsets available for Ryzen 7000 when it shows up later this year - the mainstream B650 and the high-end X670. But it seems that they might be the same chip, only the X670 is two B650s.

Which would make complete sense and fits in with AMD's design strategy for the past several years - design one really good chip and then glue a bunch of them together for bigger systems.

A Ryzen desktop CPU consists of one or two CPU chiplets (up to 8 cores each) and an I/O chiplet. The current motherboard chipset is the exact same chip as the I/O chiplet on the CPU itself, just rotated 180 degrees so the two can face each other.

They're probably not going to do that with this generation because the new CPUs will have embedded graphics on the I/O chiplet, so it makes sense to have a generic motherboard chipset and use one on mainstream boards and two on high-end ones.

Or the leaks might all be wrong. One or the other.

  • But they're going to show off these motherboards tomorrow so we don't have to wait long to find out.

  • Apple is planning to expand manufacturing outside China. (9to5Mac)

The company is looking toward India (where labour relations have been somewhat fraught) and Vietnam.

  • Apple is also dumping a Chinese display manufacturer and sourcing from South Korea instead. (WCCFTech)

BOE reportedly decided to adjust the designs for their iPhone 13 screens to cut costs - without bothering to tell Apple.

I always figured that doubling of computer power every few years would have an endpoint at some molecular level ... it can only go so small. But maybe they come up with some other non-binary tech, beyond ones and zeroes ... idk.

I'm not sure where it ends. 0.2nm - which is where this roadmap goes up to - is the diameter of a single silicon atom, so if the numbers were real it would be impossible to go smaller than that.

But the numbers are just marketing - the wires in a 0.2nm chip are expected to be 12nm wide.

But that number fudging has been going on for 15 years already, so it just means that progress will continue much as it has been for the next 15 years.

12 I gotta admit, I was happy to find a South Korean (ie Samsung) 32" monitor for my laptop. It was a bit more expensive than the commie versions, but

No commies. Er, or limited commies.

PS -- It's getting harder to find "dumb" monitors. I could have bought "smart TVs" with better specs and less $, but they all want internet connections first.

I wonder if I shouldn't have bought a couple of backups, B/C fuck China.

They started it.

13 "Eh. There were no good options at the federal level. Fortunately my own state government is somewhat sane."

yeah ... the more local levels offer a little protection from the goons. I'm in top ranked (for corruption) Illinois but most of "down state" was 70% for Trump. But they will come for us all to fund those fat government early retirement pensions.

Local guy that works for a farmer for now, 24 and had four years military. He wants IDOT (Illinois dept of transportation) job, figures he'd start at 80K, says with his military he could retire with pension in 16 years. That's insane ... work 16, get 50 years of pension. Something has to pop.

15 Pixy, I saw your electorate dumped the current gubmint for a fresh and shiny new Labor thingy.

I'm not expecting great things from any party named "Labor"; sounds pretty commie to me.

The hard-core lefties hate Labor for wanting to keep the lights on and the economy somewhat functional. I don't expect anything good, but it shouldn't be the kind of mess the US is currently suffering through.

That and the other pensions was in lieu of pay raises.
They deferred them for about 20 years. I had read that it's called.

Watch Samsung products. I have a Samsung dishwasher that went into some internal digital freakout mode. I looked carefully inside the door and discovered in about 6 point type "Made in China".

32 G'morning, folken above and below the equator,

I was dreaming that I lived in a 2-story house, maybe our apartment in the French Quarter when I was a kid, and that I had 2 cats, my boyhood red tabby and the late giant black cat Wolf. I was taking down the last can of Friskies from the kitchen shelf and whistling for Wolf, who in the dream I was sure was upstairs -- and the alarm buzzed.

It rained yesterday afternoon and stopped by evening, but the sun didn't come back out before it set. Temps stayed in the high 70s and are still there.

What are you people going to do today?

37 I'm reading a Hard Case Crime issue of a "lost" Donald E. Westlake novel, Memory. It's not a comedy at all. I'm trying to figure out what year it's set in. So far there have been no mentions of recent world or U.S. events. Pay for the lead character at a tannery in a small town about 1K miles from NYC is about $1.00 an hour; one hotel in town charges $3 a night for a room, and another $17.50 for a week without room and board included. Any ideas when these kind of prices were the norm?

I have a couple of cheapo UPSes, one for the laptop/monitor, and the other for the cable modem/stereo/TV.

I can make it about 30 minutes before it's lights out.

I mainly have them for lightning protection, which is a regular hazard in the deep South.

44 I have two, soon to be three and then two again, 1500 VA UPSes. The one that worked powers the monitors attached to the home and work laptops. The one that didn’t, and which should be replaced before bedtime tonight, is supposed to power the cable modem, the router/firewall, and the WiFi access point.
