2 Morning again, folken!

Maybe I should save this for the Book Thread, but here goes. I'm reading a Hard Case Crime issue of a "lost" Donald E. Westlake novel, Memory. It's not a comedy at all. I'm trying to figure out what year it's set in. So far there have been no mentions of recent U.S. or world events. Pay for the lead character at a tannery in a small town about 1K miles from NYC is about $1.00 an hour; one hotel in town charges $3 a night for a room, and another $17.50 for a week without room and board included. Any ideas when these kind of prices were the norm?

Considering it was 3 a.m. and restored before 5, I was impressed

As has been noted, regardless of the locale, countries or parties involved, voting is always "fortified," to one extent or the other, their are outliers but not enough.

In Australia, it was a predator vs aliens deal, so no matter who won, the average Australian lost.

The former fascist was "conservative" the new fascist is liberal who backs the Palestinians and is Gaga over climate change, so Australia is screwed either way.

I really want that nasty, fascist, buck toothed b***h in New Zealand to go down, they even worse than Australia if that can be believed.

So this story might be set in the late '50s or early '60s? Apparently this ms. is one Westlake completed but never sold, so this might be from very early in his writing career. It's very well told, but crime has not come into it, so it might have been a hard sell if it didn't fit into any genre. The lead is a professional actor who gets in an accident while touring and loses *part* of his memory -- as we'd say today, his short-term memory is affected -- and he wants to get back to NYC and see if anything or anybody triggers his memories. He's working in a tannery to raise the bus fare ($33 for ca. 1000 miles to NYC, he's told). And the local cops are interested in him, but he doesn't know why.

94 The technology for the vehicle batteries is getting there,

What is the definition of "getting there"? The batteries still cost too much, degrade much faster when rapid-charged, depend on hard to obtain minerals, can't be recycled, live half as long as the vehicle they are put in, so heavy they require extra strong frames to handle them (thus adds even further to the stress put on the roads), still aren't able to deliver the range, (unless most of the vehicle is battery) and they still catch on fire randomly burning down everything around them and nearly impossible to extinguish.

Also, not for food items, I make a trip down the dollar aisle every week or so and just blow off $10 to $15 on stuff like liquid soap, trash bags, and cleaners. Lately they've had some good quality individually wrapped rolls of TP, and I'll grab a couple of those for the storage tote. If you look, there's some name brand stuff in the dollar aisle, maybe discontinued stock.

107 I hate to think what happens to generator backup when the gas/oil is under siege.

Its already about $5/hr to run a continual 10kW load. Then there is the cost of the generator and the expense to prepare the site. If running Natgas and your plan is that while everything else fails, the gas company will still be delivering full pressure, you will need to upsize your delivery pipe to handle the additional and substantial load.

Otherwise, you are paying for tanks and hoping that you can afford to find someone who can fill them. (then figure out the security of keeping the fuel when it goes up dramatically due to demand from all your neighbors doing the same thing and topping off for preparation of an undetermined length of time)

So commerce stops at night and for several months out of the year.

A chief problem with "renewables" is that they are not dispatchable. There is no flywheel so what they produce bears absolutely no relationship to demand.

Imagine if the engine on a car was replaced by solar and there was no battery. Doesn't matter if the load changes due to wind, elevation, speed limits, traffic lights or aircon cycling, whatever the sun puts out, that is what goes to the wheels. Go under shade or a cloud, slow down, if it wasn't for the vehicle's own momentum might not be able to climb the hill until the cloud passes.

XiNN will be at a military airport where we see C-5 Galaxies landing in to a high-security cordoned off dedicated landing strip. Lots of emergency vehicles, HumVees, all with flashing lights, men with automatic weapons, a flurry of activity that looks like an aircraft carrier in a battle. Semi trucks lined up with paramilitary escorts ring the airfield ready to take on supplies.

XiNN keeps cutting to reports out in the field at women's shelters, orphanages, other unidentified locations where young women of carefully selected demographics are gushing with anticipation while holding their infants. Men of color (allegedly the fathers / no whites-allowed) are in the periphery crying over the sudden relief that the Biden Junta has saved millions of starving children from a certain death (only so they can be jabbed later with the Kill Shot)

Killing the means of production, printing mountains of dollar bills, engaging in pointless foreign wars that do not benefit the American public, and importing legions of mouths to feed into a cultural system on the brink of collapse.

231 The lovely and thoughtful Mrs naturalfake and I have been watching "The Chosen".

We finished the 2nd season yesterday, which ends with Christ giving the Sermon on the Mount. And we just met Judas.
We like it quite a bit. This portrayal of Jesus Christ is very appealing and you can understand why people might follow Him.

I think the title "The Chosen" confuses some folks. It refers not to Christ but to (mainly) the 12 Apostles. But, also to those who encounter and are affected by Him. Those who follow and those who don't.
So, the show fictionally attempts to fill in their lives.

This may drive some people bananas as it strays beyond the narrative set in the Bible. Mostly, it's well done if a bit quirky at times. For instance, Matthew, the tax collector, is portrayed as an Aspergery guy concerned with the concrete. This irritated me at first, but the character's growth and development has become one of my favorite parts of the show.

It's streaming in several places, but you can see both seasons for free on the Angel streaming Channel.
If this sounds like something you would like, you probably will.

It's really just recycled aluminum with gold electroplating.

266 Ken Paxton's political enemies love to keep repeating that he's under indictment for "securities fraud". But they leave out the fact that the case is over 5 years old (maybe 6 now?) and his opponents haven't been able to find a Court willing or able to hold the trial yet. Not to mention that all the twists and turns in the case make it sound right out of a Kafka story.

267 from earlier "That and the other pensions was in lieu of pay raises. They deferred them for about 20 years. I had read that it's called. -- IBG, YBG pay raise. -- I'll be gone, you'll be gone. Posted by: Bruce"

he meant working for IDOT (not staying in military) he could retire in 16, or 18 if he didn't "buy back" two years. And he said he would get pay raised the whole time, and not have to work too hard ... good old comfortable government work I guess.

270 Gonna make the big honkin breakfast casserole: eggs, hot sauce, spinach, sausage, green pepper, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, and a smattering of bacon across the top.

271 I see that the honorable George P. Bush didn't fall far from the family tree. Well past time to be done with this family of kubuki actors. If Ken Paxton is under investigation by the FBI, that's a pretty good endorsement.

World Economic Forum shill, Yuval Noah Hariri:

"Covid is critical because this is what convinces people to accept to legitimize total biometric surveillance. We need to not just monitor people, we need to monitor what's happening under their skin".

"...we should establish a powerful GLOBAL SYSTEM to MONITOR & prevent pandemics... already exists in the shape of the World Health Organization... We need to give this system some POLITICAL CLOUT & a LOT MORE MONEY"

"The biggest question... what to do with all these USELESS people. The problem is boredom & what to do with them... when they are... WORTHLESS. My best guess... is a combination of DRUGS & COMPUTER GAMES".

274 "Recycled Gold"...means he bought it from the assault gangs, snatching $50,000 gold chains from the necks of fellow New Yawk'as...had it melted down in a warehouse basement, then recast/formed by a socially conscious communist trans artiste in a high priced boutique storefront frequented by rappers and society page doyennes. Just as her campaigns have been funded with "Recycled" money from International Oligarch Billionaires so that she can be their pet representative with the "Poor and oppressed"
