Bruegel june-july.jpg

Haymaking (June and July)
Pieter Bruegel the Elder

This is part of a six-panel series that presumably represented the changing seasons and human patterns. But they are mostly gone!

And I just changed the image. I found a better one, although not big enough for the clickable one.

Yeah. These represent(ed) the Labors of the Months, an agricultural "calendar" in the Middle Ages. Each month was assigned a labor or task that helped the illiterate poor remember what to do during the seasons to get the most out of their fields and harvests, and to properly stock up for the winter. The labors varied according to region. In the northern climes, like where Breugel was, June and July you cleared/mowed a field and reaped your wheat.

64 I like this picture. I like Bruegel in general. His stuff always reminds me of a book I liked as a child, Life in the Middle Ages, by Clara and Richard Winston (the illustrated version seems to be OOP).

If you like reading about the Moyen Age, a lovely little book is Ann Baer's Down the Common, a novel about Marion, the wife of a carpenter on a middling English estate, and what happens during one year in her life.

65 The more I look at Pieter Bruegel the Elder's paintings and other works, the more I enjoy them. This is typical in its appeal: the colors of sky, land and peasant clothing, the layout of the terrain, and the level of detail. There is a degree of whimsy as well.

A number of his works make me think of The Shire in Tolkien's stories. That adds to my enjoyment. It is easy to hear echoes of Beethoven's Pastoral 6th symphony while looking at this painting. That's a good thing.

CBD, thanks for this choice. It is enjoyable on many levels.

Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at May 24, 2022 09:45 AM (t3/qz)

68 It's always interesting to me to dissect an illustration to figure out why it's not working. Especially when each of the individual parts is well done, and yet it still registers as "off" somehow in the brain.

Bruegel painted a lovely sky. Nice clouds, good color. The rock formations are spot on for color and realism. The individuals are a bit cartoonish, but still rendered well. Palette and composition are nice, and the fade of color as the scene recedes into the distance... but still...

Maybe it's the stilted, defined layers -- this is the foreground, this is the middle ground, this is the background -- that makes it unconvincing? It's almost the depth perception opposite of yesterday's painting, where almost nothing was rendered clearly, in order to draw the eye.

Anyway. Peculiar.

I liked that too! It does occur to me to ask why centaurs are usually drawn with their human torsos bare-chested, though. In an ancient Greek summer I can imagine they'd relax or work like that. But what would they wear when it gets cold or rainy or both? I'd picture a leather jacket of some kind, and if it's really cold, a blanket spread over the horse back. And they would probably need some kind of belt to carry tools and supplies, since they wouldn't have pants with pockets.

I see what you're talking about, but I like it a lot. I see it as Brugel painting a storybook fantasy-level depiction of the scene, rather than a harshly realistic one. Similar to the style of art that Maxfield Parrish and others of his generation would do centuries later. That's why the rocks in the background are like something out of a dream.

Prayers up. They work, by the way.

A preacher friend of mine runs a tree cutting service. He was clearing a jam in the shredder when his father, of all people, who was working for him turned the shredded back on.

Arm completely mangled, though still attached, by grace of God.

18 months of skin and tissue grafts and reconstructive surgery and somehow the arm was saved. Thousands and thousands of daily prayers for him from friends, family and congregants.

Early one Sunday morning years ago during the Decadence Weekend (Labor Day Weekend with gays congregating and partying in the French Quarter), I spied a beefy middle-aged guy coming out of a bar on St. Charles Avenue. He wore construction boots, a black leather SS-style cap, a black leather jockstrap, and a T-shirt . . . and he flagged down a cab and hopped in without the driver hesitating in the least. What a thing to see right after breakfast.

208 When other model builders decide to downsize their stash I am usually on the call list. Which is how I got a 1/48 Hasegawa P-40E. Previous owner even threw in Eduard PE and mask sets.

Cockpit all painted and assembled with some PE stuff glued in. Fuselage all together and so are the wings, tail, and rudder. Now diving into the smaller mostly external bits.

Not bad for starting it on Saturday and doing nothing to it on Sunday.
