Dow Posts Biggest Loss Since 2020 In What Analysts Are Calling "Putin's Plunge"

Just kidding about that last part.

Tryna get hired by the Disinformation Governance Board. I heard their top spot just opened.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its biggest loss since 2020 on Wednesday after another major retailer warned of rising cost pressures, confirming investors' worst fears over rising inflation and rekindling the brutal 2022 sell-off.

The Dow shed 1,164.52 points, or 3.57%, to 31,490.07, the average's biggest decline since June 2020. It was the lowest close for the Dow since March 2021.

I can't find what prompted the June 2020 sell-off but I imagine it had something to do with the GLOBAL PANDEMIC AND THE WORLD ECONOMY LOCKING DOWN.

And we're matching that fall.

Thanks to Biden.

The S&P 500 traded 4.04% lower to 3,923.68, also the worst drop since June 2020. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 4.73% to 11,418.15, which is the largest fall in the tech-heavy index since May 5. The selling was broad and intense on Wall Street with just eight members of the S&P 500 in the green.

Markets returned to heavy selling after two back-to-back quarterly reports from Target and Walmart stoked investor fears of rising inflation taking a bite out of corporate profits and consumer demand. It's the fifth Dow decline of more than 800 points this year, which all occurred as the stock sell-off intensified within the last one month.

"The consumer is challenged," said Megan Horneman, chief investment officer at Verdence Capital Advisors. "We started to see at the end of the year that consumers were turning to credit cards to pay for the rise in food prices, rise in energy prices, and that's actually gotten much worse. ... This is going to hurt those bellwether retail places and Walmart tends to be one of them."

...

"It's clear that transportation costs matter and they're impacting [some of] the largest companies," said Kim Forrest, founder of Bokeh Capital.

You don't say.

"So I think investors are scratching our heads going, 'so, who's next?' And they're giving visibility into what's happening with the consumer."

...

"Any company that relies on households and discretionary purchases will likely suffer this quarter because a lot of discretionary income has been funneled to food and energy prices," said Jack Ablin, founding partner of Cresset Capital.

Oh, and:

In an appearance Wednesday on CNBC's "The Exchange," Jeremy Grantham said the current downturn is worse than the tech bubble of 2000.

Over at Hot Air, John Sexton notes that Fed Chair Powell says he'll raise rates as he must to stop inflation, but former Fed chair Ben Bernacke says that Powell waited to long to start raising rates, and that it's probably too late and that we might be looking down the barrel of the extreme measures that Paul Volcker had to take in 82-83.

Also: Sexton collects a lot of local news video documenting the economic downturn. Biden is not successful in pressuring the local media into pretending this is the Putin Stagflation or whatever bullshit they're pushing today.

Thanks, NeverTrump! Really loving the Sweet Tweets!

Because It's the 70s Again:

We're having a genuine tech industry crash it looks like. Like inflation sucks, but it doesn't stop the stock market from going up (not necessarily net of inflation but in nominal terms, see Venezuela for example).

For some reason, despite the decline in the Nasdaq, it's being commented less on as the driving sector(unlike say housing in 200.

123 There's a claim I have seen floating around that most jobs are created when Democrats have power. I think a lot of the justification for this is that the 90's were a roaring economy and we had Clinton as President.

I don't think the President had anything to do with the rise Internet companies. That was going to happen and it must have been fun to be the President at that time and be able to say "see how great things are with me in charge?"

It's amazing how open-and-shut the current situation is. Yes, the Ukraine war muddies the waters a bit, but in brief: economy sucked under Obama, economy was roaring within a year of Trump policies going into effect, economy sucked immediately upon Biden getting into office.

Oh wait, I forgot. Obama's policies were wise and gave us a roaring economy... it's just that they took exactly 8 years and a few months to take effect, and Trump just got the benefit. And Trump screwed everything up in a way that just happened to take effect after Biden took office. Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket.

Throughout history, you normally never convince large groups of people of the errors of their ways. In fact, things like a healthy and functioning press were conceived to allow people a chance to see how they're wrong and change. To inject the body politic with new ideas and allow debate to change the course of the public away from disaster. But that is not the norm.

The norm is when all the people who had terrible bad ideas are plowed under by the final destructive force of their failure while killing a good number of the innocent and right-minded too.

174 149 So let me get this straight, if I want to buy the Treasury bonds with my money I can buy them directly from the Treasury? Yes. And if you want to buy the Treasury bonds with your money you can buy them from the Treasury? Right. But if the Ben Bernanke wants to buy the Treasury bonds using the American people's money he does not buy them from the Treasury, he buys them from the Goldman Sachs? Exactly.

And is the Goldman Sachs give him a good price? Of course not, they are the Goldman Sachs, they make their living ripping off the American people.
Posted by: David Prince at May 18, 2022 05:53 PM (WUxVt)

If he buys them from the Treasury that money wouldn't go into the market absent a congressional appropriation and corresponding spending (the point of the purchase).

The Treasury also doesn't produce debt instruments in unlimited quantities. For large investors and main financing purposes it has large auctions. The smaller amounts that you can buy are specifically reserved for smaller investors and not meaningful in quantity for this purpose.

A superior man, in regard to what he does not know, shows a cautious reserve. If names be not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things. If language be not in accordance with the truth of things, affairs cannot be carried on to success. When affairs cannot be carried on to success, proprieties and music do not flourish. When proprieties and music do not flourish, punishments will not be properly awarded. When punishments are not properly awarded, the people do not know how to move hand or foot. Therefore a superior man considers it necessary that the names he uses may be spoken appropriately, and also that what he speaks may be carried out appropriately. What the superior man requires is just that in his words there may be nothing incorrect.

The Fed buys bonds with money it creates out of thin air. It does this with a few keystrokes on its computers. When it sells bonds, that money disappears with the same keystrokes.

The Fed is not buying bonds as investment, but as a tool of monetary policy, to control the money supply and interest rates.

They like to maintain a fiction that the market sets bond prices and interest rates. Having the Fed participate in a auction (where you need to have tens of billions at the ready to dump), would essentially be raw printing, the central bank setting the govt's rates, not the market.

Oh, that's basically a fiction, as the Fed has enabled the govt's spending spree nonsense, anyway.

There is one exception to this Fed can't participate in T auctions. It can roll existing bonds that are maturing over at an auction. But, there it doesn't bid, it just accepts the price the bidders determine.

"Trump is a germaphobe" is not an adequate excuse. But anyway, it was a broad based attack, DeepState in on it, continues to this day. The show was so much better in the early years, when it was closer to the movie, with irreverent docs and nurses just whooping it up and doing their best to have a good time in an awful setting.

I blinked and missed it, apparently. Poor McLean.

Recipe for Soviet style meltdown.

Shame on you. That is a clear signal that you are an amateur drinker.

Do better.

1/2 oz. Maraschino Liquer
1/2 oz. brown sugar simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes orange bitters

Stir with ice for 30 seconds

345 Sorry but TARP and the little remembered early 2008 stimulus were both precedents for all the big spending.

And in defense of Trump, Paul Ryan said Congress would return to regular order and it mostly didn't, not to mention Ryan essentially handed Congress over to the Dems in 2018.

Posted by: MAGA_Ken at May 18, 2022 06:34 PM (cMXNt)

346 In the MASH book and movie, Hawkeye and Trapper were pretty much equals. Rodgers resented that the TV version turned into the Alan Alda show.

347 It's funny how there's always extensive discussion of a problem that becomes a recession for years in advance of it happening.

Yeah there's always plenty of warning and people saying what is going to happen, but never the political will to do anything about it. Look at the cultural rot of our nation. For a century or more we've been warned what was coming and nobody paid attention, other than mocking the "uptight puritans" and "hypocritical bigots" who warned us.

356 87 -- Thomas: Back in the mid to late '90s, I was thoroughly convinced Alan Greenspan hated me personally. Every time it looked like my investments were ready to finally take off, Greenspan would say or do something to calm the "over exuberance" of the market.

357 Unsure of the date and specific show, but I recall Juan Williams was on Fox about two weeks ago. The other panelists were pointing out the various issues facing Joetato, including the bad polling numbers. Juan, being an apologist for racist old white men, pointed out that the Dow gained 900 points or so that day.

Might have been May 5th. Searching for 900 points brings up a note that Interest Rates rose 0.5% that day. So the number was goosed, Juan crows about it like the good little demoncrat that he is, and then it quickly goes to shit.

On another note: Given the rapid rise in inflation (and devaluation of the dollar) - What should the Dow be, pegged for inflation, to match the highest point during Trump's presidency, and then the lowest point during 2020 prior to November's election?

358 Yeah, MASH started going downhill when McLean Stevenson left. I always assumed that TV shows were run like businesses producing content for customer enjoyment - like Economics taught in high school. I never dreamed that in that era it was run more or less as a power projection by actors and producers. Tme slots for viewing determined by what other activities viewers were willing sacrifice to watch your show.

Sigh. Thank the Gods for our 21st century technology freedom choices.
