Top Story

  • More running around in outside land today. Now I have matching blisters on both heels because my comfy shoes had a sudden total existence failure and I had to grab the last spare pair that I never wore because they don't fit.

    Ouch.

Had to get one more document certified for the new house before settlement which is fine except that -

  • My mobile phone was set to be cancelled on the day of settlement for the new house - tomorrow - because my provider is changing networks and hates having customers, and I couldn't log in to the portal to activate the new SIM because the SMS confirmation was disappearing into the ether and they have no way to confirm anything except sending you an SMS.

    So that was fun.

  • Also still working 14 hours a day.

  • And while I was out in the outside without a laptop one of my servers fell over.

  • While I was out I passed two random guys in the street discussing the Luna / Terra collapse - and actually getting the facts right.

  • Twitter's unspoken corporate motto: Commie as fuck. (Daily Mail)

Project Veritas doing the dirty work of actually reporting the news again.
'You know, our jobs are at stake,' he said. 'He's a capitalist and we weren't really operating as capitalists, more like very socialist. Like we're all commie as f***.'
    Yes, we know.

Tech News

  • Need a desktop cluster of ARM compute modules? Yes? Why?

    Anyway, here you go. (Kickstarter)

You can plug in a variety of modules via adaptors, including the Raspberry Pi 4 Compute Module and Nvidia's Jetson AI boards, and you get shared HDMI, USB, Ethernet, SATA, USB, and two mini PCIe slots.

Obviously someone wants this thing because the project funded in three minutes.

  • Which Linux desktop is the easiest for new users? (ZDNet)

It doesn't matter because there's 21 to choose from and they're all the same. (The Register)

Actually not quite; the first article talks about desktop distributions - they recommend Mint and Kubuntu - and the second is talking about individual desktop environments.

    Just use Mint, probably.

  • Hong Kong is planning to block messaging app Telegram as part of a broader plan to block messenger app Telegram. (IBTimes)

I guess if you want to block messenger app Telegram, that's the way to go about it.

  • Demand has dropped like a rock says Chinese chipmaker SMIC. (Nikkei)
"Many smartphone, PC and home appliance companies had exposure in Russia and Ukraine, and their revenues [from those markets> are now gone. Sales in their home market [of China] have also fallen due to the COVID situation domestically," Zhao said.

Demand for consumer electronics "dropped like a rock, very seriously," the executive said. "Some of our customers are holding more than five months of that type of inventory."
SMIC's own factories are still running at 100%, producing chips for other markets that are still in short supply - unglamorous but essential stuff like power management chips and embedded microcontrollers.

The cause of the sudden market collapse is easy to identify, and since the CCP isn't going anywhere, is only likely to get worse for China.

  • The Pentagon has vowed to get to the bottom of UFO sightings. (Reuters)

That's actually pretty simple. They're not real.
UAPs are unexplained, it's true. But they are real.
    Horseshit.

  • Small Android phone. (SmallAndroidPhone)

Measuring figured out the inside if a 3/4 pipe works as well so made a sleave with that and have plenty of 3/4 to 1/2 reducers on hand. It's all together but haven't soldered the joints as grabbed 4 new leads for bathroom sinks and 2 are wrong and they are connected to these new lines.

Windows 10 with 16GB of RAM runs pretty well unless your using Photoshop or never bother to close your browser tabs. With less memory Linux would show advantages over Windows.

49 >> The Linux home page says that I can keep Windows if I want -- that when I start the computer, it will ask me which I want to use.

That's true, if everything works correctly. The complications are complex, and the vagaries arcane. GRUB, the current linux bootloader of choice must load itself in the master boot record of the BIOS hard disk. If GPT and UEFI firmware, it's a bit different.

Your hard disk has to be partitioned correctly. There are more vagaries here that can be explained. If something goes wrong, you can be quite fucked. Recovery from fuckage requires some knowledge of these vagaries.

55
From my old system, I did not GRUB install itself to the MBR. I used GRUB for DOS, which can appear as a entry in the Windows 7+ Boot menu.

On my new system here, which is UEFI, I have a number of hard disks. I set up Linux, bare metal install of Fedora, to use the UEFI boot system. It coexists nicely with Windows UEFI boot loader. I have two GPT hard disks, and let the default be Linux on one, and Windows on the other. Simply choosing BIOS boot options let me choose between the two.

Again, the defaults will work under normal circumstances and allow you to dual (or more) boot, but the complications are quite complex. If things are exactly kosher on you system, things can go awry, and you need to know the devilish details of this.

BTW, Windows does not like, and refuses to coexist with other OS boot loaders. All across the board. In UEFI systems, with Windows, trying to install Linux, you've got let GRUB be the default, which can then hand over to the Windows boot loader if you choose. Windows UEFI bootloader doesn't play nice, and doesn't hand over to another, only loading Windows.

On MBR systems, it's the same, but much more complex.

Dual booting, if everything goes well, works fine. But little details, little oddities of a particular system can fuck it all up quickly.

68 If there can be trouble with dual booting, maybe I should just go with Linux alone on the laptop. I have other Win machines. It's just that this laptop fell into my hands (my boss was going to recycle it), and I bought it a new battery and installed the apps I wanted. If Linux Mint is easy to learn (I'm good at that sorta thing) and will be stable and mostly trouble-free, maybe it's worth trying.

71 I see folks are scratching their heads over Idaho's left leaning Republican Gov Little easily winning his primary in what is a conservative western state in national elections.

But Western fops like Little get re-elected simply because I suspect Idahoans hear they have to vote every few years, look at the ballet and see they have Governor listed and say to themselves "guess we need one of those" and then vote for whoever.

Because that is what Gov Little is - whoever. He rules over a vast and sparsely populated state with little physical mechanisms to bring pain to a limited and ambivalent populace that probably has never seen ruthless governance up close.

If you've got enough hard drive space for reparitioning, and that goes well, you can do it. Everything must be standard, or within the known parameters of the Linux install program. If so, it will work well. If not, you can be royally fucked.

You need to know something about how this works to recover.

Basically, if you want to play with Linux with Windows, I recommend trying it with a virtual machine before turning it loose on the bare metal.

Windows 10 includes Hyper-V the MS hypervisor, which like to take over everything, as MS always does. By default that is not installed. My favorite VM hypervisor is VirtualBox. You run Linux or whatever as a virtual machine under Windows.

Or you can use Hyper-V. Or Both. Me, getting Hyper-V working together with Virtualbox is a bitch, so I have boot switches set up that can boot Windows with Hyper-V disabled so I can run VirtualBox.

That's what I use most of the time. But I do have some Hyper-V machines, and have boot options.

My systems are set-up so complex that it's ridiculous, but that's what I do. Miley thinks I'm insane about this stuff. She's right, most likely.

The easily traveled terrain and dense population allow lefty government tyrants like her, along with her enforcement goons, to bring maximum pain to a trapped and squirming populace. And she knows it, as evidenced by that permanent sneer plastered on her face.

Gov. Little could order all Idahoans to wear their pants on backwards, use party hats instead of cowboy hats, and recite The Walrus and the Carpenter all day, every day, and no Idahoans would ever know it, much less obey. It gives the impression of a hard stop where you must make a choice to move on. But if you touch the grayed out print button, your ballot will print with a null selection.

130 A report by the Herald newspaper highlights the “very unusual” spike in deaths of babies, with the alarm being raised after 18 infants died within four weeks of birth in March.
That same control limit was also breached in September last year, when 21 neonatal deaths were reported, the first time this had occurred since records began.
“The neonatal mortality rate was 5.1 per 1,000 live births in September and 4.6 per 1,000 in March, against an average of 1.49 per 1000 in 2019,” reports the newspaper.
Public Health Scotland (PHS) said the deaths could not have been down to chance, while the cause behind the previous spike in September also “remained a mystery.”

160 Wolfus - yes, the Browning poem, which is a dramatic monologue written in iambic pentameter with an aabb rhyme scheme. First read it in eleventh grade English class and have been trying to get the performance right since then. And yes, it is creepy as all get-out.

I've always wanted to do it in a public reading too. There is one particular moment, when the Duke has told his horrible story to his listener, and then says, "Nay, we'll go down together, sir." You can just see his listener hanging back ("What kind of creature is this standing next to me??"), and the Duke taking his arm basically to drag him down the stairs.

I point the poem out to fellow writers as a marvelous example of showing everything you need to show through dialogue only -- a monologue in this case.

My first fax 'machine' was actually mounted on a card inside the computer. I needed a way to generate a purchase order from a text file and Fax it out hands free. That card probably cost about a grand, but it saved me a fortune in time. Printing out incoming Fax's was incredibly slow, which was a pain in the ass.

It was certainly more of an intellectual challenge sometimes. You actually had to *learn* something, the syntax of DOS or whatever. I had a bit of that last week: Some videos would not play in VLC Player on my Lenovo laptop at home, but they played fine on my desktop at work. Turned out to be a question of permissions. Once I set those, everything was fine.

170 UFOs exist. I grew up under the flight path between Groom Lake and Mountain Home, and I’ve seen more than my share, one of which seemed to violate pretty much everything we know about aerodynamics, all of which had FAA mandated running lights.

There’s a deliberate conflation by the media and government between “that’s weird” and “It’s aliens Bob! Aliens!” (Of course, nut jobs are happy to buy in, and normies automatically tune out. So it’s effective. Just categorically false.)

171 I gotta hold my nose and vote for Oz. We need about 55 GOP Senators just to have a fighting chance at keeping the D's from running amok.

We need 55 *conservative* GOP Senators AND conservative leadership in the GOP.

Continue to vote for Romney, Murkowski, Collins and Liz Cheney types and that never happens.

This is the same bullshit the right has been doing the last 20 years. "Electability!" "We need a GOP majority!" When that "GOP majority" is GOPe, there's no difference between that and Democrat majority.

If the right is fine with "hold my nose" and vote for a piece of shit like Oz, just to get "a GOP majority"... we're just going to get the same shit we've been getting the last 20 years.

That's actually how it SHOULD be IMO. The ideal government, as I envision it, would be like a well-fitting shoe -- you could forget about it 99 percent of the time because it would unobtrusively do its job without constantly causing you pain. In an ideal world, I would think, people would not have to even think about who their governor or mayor (or even President) is in between elections because those people would just do their jobs and not get in everyone's face 24/7.

I had probably 5,000 plus items in inventory and hundreds of suppliers. To have an automated system to generate a text file and then fax it out within five seconds was a great idea. No need to stand in front of a fax machine and dial a number. What incredible productivity gains were occurring in manufacturing during the 90's.

Then our politicians sold us down the river to China and the lights started going out. Last number I saw was American manufacturing down to 8% employment from a 90's era of 33% or higher.

On Windows, I use "Rufus" to write the ISO file to a USB stick which makes it bootable. This will erase everything on the stick, so don't have any files on it you want to save. Rufus is available here: https://tinyurl.com/2p9ay6h6

Once written, leave the stick inserted, restart your machine and try to boot from it directly. (Install instructions mention this.)

You'll boot into the Linux Mint Cinnamon desktop, and you can try it before you install it.

Yes, SMIC focuses on the (huge) Chinese domestic market.

And the Chinese consumer electronics market has just imploded for a variety of reasons starting with CCP.

TSMC's outlook is more robust; they make chips for Apple, AMD, Nvidia, Microsoft, Sony, Intel, and a long list of smaller companies around the world.

Yes, but I don't any more. The main problem with dual-booting is that whenever I switched to the one that I rarely ran I spent a lot of time updating it before I could use it for anything.
