I got a call from my son's principal when he was in fourth grade. Seems she called the police to report that he had touched a girls butt. They were playing tag on the playground. WTF? She wanted to know if i wanted to be there when he was arrested.
I was there, in minutes, and the police officer couldn't figure out why she had been called at all. The boy, meanwhile, thought he was going to be jailed or executed.

Led by a professor whose name escapes me, Johns Hopkins led in research that determined the repeatedly replicated scientific conclusion that "gender reassignment" surgery is useless - that "transgenders" who had had the surgery were no happier, no less depressed, and no less suicidal than "transgenders" that hadn't had the surgery.
Johns Hopkins even stopped doing "gender reassignment" surgery based on that analysis.
Sad that they've joined The Hive.

It's similar to Civ V if you've played it (which is Civ IV with better graphics and a hexagonal map), but VI does "districts" that you unlock with the tech tree and build buildings in. For example, you can build a Holy Site early on, then build a shrine in it, then a temple in it, and so on. Pooky doesn't like it because you have to unlock districts through the tech tree and get to certain population levels (3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 13, 15 IIRC) to build them. I think he just wants to break the game and start nuclear war at 1000 BC, but he won't fully admit that.

That was probably the worst part of that school, but not the only moment of malfeasance. I spent more time eyeballing that worthless bitch than I care to list. It was his one and only year at that school--never again.

Last June, the high temp was 88 on one day. Last July, the high temp was 77. Last August the high was 87 on one day. September did hit 89, but for all those months, the average daily temp was in the low 60's. So, not really bad. Don't know what you're complaining about.

I learned a long time ago that politicians won't fix things, they always make things worse. So I saw that Texas, the largest energy producer on the planet, was unable to generate energy, so I moved out of ERCOT and into SPP which, does have a lot of windmills, but isn't past the point of no return that the rest of Texas has entered.
Texas energy is doomed to fail - too many windmills, not enough thermals, and absolutely no political will to do anything other than lie about improving it.
Also, doesn't help to import millions of people who expect a comfortable mid 70's indoor temp, swimming pool and lush northeastern style landscape and not have a reservoir built in the last 30 years.

Oregon kept its schools closed longer than any state than California. The state government sprang into action, and banned standardized testing for the next few years, so people can't see how much damage has been done.
The high points: Most students are noticeably behind grade level.
The extended break destroyed students' socialization for school - students now routinely just text and play games on their smart phones, and ignore the teacher.
You can't discipline minority students because it would be racist and the administration won't back you up. The students know this, of course. Students routinely say "s*ck my d*ck" to female teachers making any sort of request, and there are absolutely no consequences for doing so.
Suburban teachers chimed in that there were significant issues in their schools as well, but Portland is far worse.
Keeping the schools closed was just an epic, epic disaster.

I see that Beto is lying about being able to bring down energy costs while increasing reliability. Beto is a Malthusian Communist so his "plan" doesn't exist, and he will lash out like all other Malthusian Communists and implement draconian rationing policies divided along political lines.
It is too late for Texas. It takes 20 years to build a nuclear reactor, coal will never come back, and natural gas plants take many years to build - and must be near large bodies of water for cooling. Texas hasn't built any lakes in decades, and it will be difficult to find available land around any lake to build a plant and get the multimillionaires living on the lake to agree to the eyesore and noise.
So Texas, like California will never be a reliable energy state and will increasingly look third world.

They had with them a sea otter pelt that had been taken from poachers. My goodness, you could feel why the pelts were so coveted. One of my takeaways from that lecture is that a sea otter has as many hairs on one square inch of its skin as a cat has on its entire body.

The Sealife Center in Seward, AK routinely rescues baby sea otters. They will freeze if they don't keep their fur immaculately clean, and the babies don't know how to do that. So, the staff has to teach them. They have videos. Cutest damned critters that ever lived, but they bite like a mofo.

Most of the valuable furs come from aquatic or semi-aquatic animals. They need the high density fur to insulate them from the cold water.

I love them so much. There's a couple sea otters here in Seattle, and a few in Vancouver. I need to get to Monterey Bay. They have a sea otter surrogacy program. They have rescued babies and had some of their resident otters teach them
How to otter and then released them back into Elkhorn Slough. You can see them on a live cam. It's so cool.

Fate smiled on me. A slight clearing opened up right at the moment of totality, and I saw the last white sliver go out.
Covered back up again, but now we're getting good off and on viewing.
Nice dull red moon. Maximum occurs at 12:11 AM. I hope I can see that (well, human eyes couldn't tell much difference, but that will be minimum brightness.

That's okay, I've seen plenty of lunar eclipses in my lifetime, including blood moons. I remember one time driving with my parents from El Paso to [I don't remember where we were going or when it was] during a lunar eclipse. It was a very cold night, and my mom would complain every time I pulled over to the side of the road watch the progress of the eclipse.
Update: I went outside and saw a sliver of the moon, but before I could grab a camera, it disappeared behind the cloud cover. I don't think it is coming back for us tonight.

A few years back I did a week-long horsepack trip through the Flattops Wilderness Areea south of Steamboat Spgs with my dad, a mountain man buddy of his (Don), and a back east friend (Charlie) of his. We stopped to set up camp one afternoon, and it was my turn to fix supper. Don had spotted a couple of elk a ridge or two away, and started off to see if he could spy the whole herd from the top of the ridge, perhaps 300 yds distance. My dad set off with him. Charlie set off as well, lagging behind.
After about five minutes, the guy from back east trudged back into camp huffing and puffing and sat down by the fire. He said, "You know, I got to thinking part way up that hill, we've got elk in the Cincinnati zoo, and if I want to see an elk, I'll just go to the zoo!"

Good program on the "Interurban" that ran here in rural IL from 1904-25. Before autos became prevalent there were 50 such systems in IL at the time.

Big elk herds here will head down into the San Luis Valley in large numbers in the late fall. My wife once had to stop and wait while some 3-400 crossed the road in front of her en masse. Probably a 7-10 minute wait. It got so bad that locals would flock to the sporting goods stores when the herds showed up, get an elk tag on the spot and drive just barely out of town, guns a-blazing. Many a farmhouse withstood gunfire in those days. They finally went to a limited license annual draw for elk.

I am on the plains. Pretty high plains, though, about 2800 feet. Countryside is rolling, mostly cropland, some wooded areas. If I drive about 20 miles west, i can see the Rocky Mountains. Geology-wise, this is plains. Layer-cake geology. I'm sitting on Tertiary shales, but the K-T boundary is only one or two hundred feet below me.

I'm okay with the reintroduction of species that are native to an area, though the reason for their not existing in the wild today is most likely not solvable in a meaningful way, so they'll probably end up going away again; zoos For The Win! Better than 'introducing' non-native species to an area, like the fucking python to Florida. That will fuck up an ecosystem faster than a Democrat president can fuck up the economy and Democrat presidents can fuck up the economy just by waking up in the morning.

A couple of years ago, when I was considering moving to WI (and it's not off the table!), I noticed that a lot of houses in the smaller towns like Appleton didn't have A/C. I figured I could buy 2-3 window units, put them in for the duration of the hot humid time, living room and bedroom, and then take them out to store them until the next year. Do people do that in WI?
