47 Wealth, discovering its power, has reached out its long arms to grab the distant and innumerable sinner; it has gone down into its deep pockets to pay for his costly pursuit and flaying; it has created the Puritan entrepreneur, the daring and imaginative organizer of Puritanism, the baron of moral endeavour, the invincible prophet of new austerities. And, by the same token, it has issued its letters of marque to the Puritan mercenary, the professional hound of heaven, the moral Junker, the Comstock, and out of his skill at his trade there has arisen the whole machinery, so complicated and so effective, of the new Holy Office.

52 The American Puritan, by now, was not content with the rescue of his own soul; he felt an irresistible impulse to hand salvation on, to disperse and multiply it, to ram it down reluctant throats, to make it free, universal and compulsory.

59 Beneath all of them there was the dubious principle—the very determining principle, indeed, of Puritanism—that it is competent for the community to limit and condition the private acts of its members, and with it the inevitable corollary that there are some members of the community who have a special talent for such legislation, and that their arbitrary fiats are, and of a right ought to be, binding upon all.

Posted by: Tom Servo at May 13, 2022 10:39 PM (r46W7)

62 That is to say, the special business of forcing sinners to be good was taken away from the preachers and put into the hands of laymen trained in its technique and mystery, and there it remains. The new Puritanism has created an army of gladiators who are not only distinct from the hierarchy, but who, in many instances, actually command and intimidate the hierarchy.

74 The individual whose common rights are invaded by such persons has little chance of getting justice, and less of getting redress. When he attempts to defend himself he finds that he is opposed, not only by a financial power that is ample for all purposes of the combat and that does not shrink at intimidating juries, prosecuting officers and judges, but also by a shrewdness which shapes the laws to its own uses, and takes full advantage of the miserable cowardice of legislatures.

I had a girlfriend who used to get such a kick whenever she found forgotten money in a jacket or pants pocket. So I started hiding money in her pockets. Never told her.

She dumped me because some creep in a mall told her she could be a model, and for a few hundred bucks he would take her portfolio photos and get her listed.

Yes, I disagree with him at least as often as I agree with him. But he would definitely run afoul of the modern puritans.

Thus the fundamental dogmas of democracy are gradually overhauled by men of vision. The idea that government should be an agency of sharply limited powers has been abandoned, and in place of it we have the idea that government should be omnipotent and is generally infallible. The idea of equality before the law gives way to the aforesaid Social Justice, the essence of which is the principle that all property is the rightful possession, not of those who have earned it, but of those who haven’t earned it. And the idea of universal suffrage begins to be conditioned by the idea that there is a right way to vote and a wrong way to vote, and that those who vote wrong are traitors to the Republic.

In life he was a snarky lefty journo, who would instantly find himself at home on CNN today.

He left a journal/diary when he died, with a legal codicil stipulating that it couldn't be read or published until 50 years after his death, IIRC. When it WAS finally published, it turned out to be an extended anti-semitic rant which would've made Josef Goebbels blush with embarrassment.

Do a Web search of the term "soil cement". It's typically 90% soil, and 10% Portland cement, and 10% water. (Yeah, I know that adds up to more than 100%) It's pretty strong; they build road bases out of it. There are youtube videos of folks making and using it.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 13, 2022 11:25 PM (vinQ9)

183 All y'all retaining wall peeps:

You can build CMU walls without having to know how to mortar block. It's called "dry-stack CMU" and actually has technical literature behind it.

Start with a decent footing; 12 x 24 ish as long as the wall isn't too tall (I'm thinking 24" max).

Pretty easy to stack block when you're just setting them without mortar. There are some surface mortars you can trowel on by sackcrete and others:

https://bit.ly/39lfWKp

You should probably grout the wall solid or every cell or two, and if you want to go over 24" or so you'll need a bigger footing and rebar dowels going into the cells.

The only issue there is that you need to build a "mass" wall. That is, compared to concrete of usually 3000 psi you're going to end up with 100 psi or so. So you can't have a wall that stands up on its own and can take bending.

You have to build a wedge/mass big enough to handle the potential horizontal force of the soil behind it.

Look up "Home Made Baler" for inspiration, it sounds like that is what you want.

You mentioned making paper and portland cement slabs, I wonder if it would be possible to use layers of feed bag material and thin layers of concrete to make a reinforced concrete material, like you were putting in layers of fiberglass and bonding for a boat hull.

sorry for jumping on every thread about this I'm a structural engineer so it's compulsive at this point.

Concrete would not pass through and make the kind of bonds you need with the sack material in the way. You'd just end up with super weak layers of concrete half stuck together with fiber.

Yep. I would confidently build anything up to 30" tall and really not worry too much as long as you put some substance into the wall.

If you ask geotechnical engineers how much lateral earth pressure soil can exert you'll get "equivalent fluid" lateral pressures anywhere from 45 pcf for gravel that has a way to drain, to 110 pcf or more for clay that doesn't have a way to drain.

The force really starts to add up if the wall has any sort of height to it, and it gets really hard to resist just with mass.

Well, you could use feedbags filled with soil cement, and stacked; they will conform with one another like lava pillows do. If the planned wall will be tall, cut some stakes of 3/4" rebar, and drive them into the ground, through the first or second course of bags. Then lay a length of rebar along the top of the course, and weld it to the stakes. lay another couple of courses, and repeat.

228 And let's not forget the value of holdback anchors reaching from the retaining wall, deep and far into the soil-load it's meant to hold. The holdback retaining points have several different engineering options, depending on conditions and calculated loads.

Here is a worked example for a 9' - 8" wall done with CMU units. A cast in place concrete wall would be pretty similar.

https://bit.ly/3wmuAKR

I think your best bet is going to be finding a specialty contractor that does "stack block" walls, where as they build the wall they tie in soil anchors to the uphill side as Jim is mentioning above. They are pretty much always cheaper at that height, and the blocks they stack are modular so they can follow whatever slope/varation you need as the wall gets taller adn shorter.

yep if you have the hydraulics to do it. All the screw anchors are specialty products though and you can't buy them and install yourself to my knowledge.

I would not use the sort of screw anchors that you can use for, say, a mobile home. (nor would I trust those for a mobile home either). The serious ones are usually called helical piles but concept wise just a granddaddy screw anchor.

I had a GF who lived in a house that had a 45 degree slope off the back porch, and she mowed it once and then sprayed to kill the grass because she thought she was going to roll the push mower.
I wound up making a gabion terraced garden out of chainlink fencing and rocks I picked out of the neighboring pasture for her. It was a fun project but it took a lot of weekends.

There is. There are firms that do foam injection below foundations.

You can also go with jacking it up on a couple piles. Foundation leveling firms use a couple different kinds but they would all work fine for you wall I would imagine. It *could* lead to the wall sliding forward after you jack it up if you create a gap between the foundation and the soil, so I would lean toward foam injection if it was my house.

343 It's an impressive structure, meant to allow ships with nearly 200 ft. "air draft" (highest point of ship above water) to navigate under the span.
-----------------
That's a huge ship.
Posted by: Braenyard

200' should cover most ships. The biggest cruise ships--Oasis of the Seas and her sister ships--have 236' of air draft, though, so it doesn't let everyone through.

The Panama Canal has the Bridge of the Americas spanning it, which is also about 200' up, so that seems like a reasonable number to aim for.

354 There is a not very well disguised low opinion among practicing engineers of the abilities of engineering professors to actually execute designs.
Posted by: TexasDan

There is also a sort-of hierarchy of engineers, and, presumably, engineering profs.

Chemical Engineers are the smartest and highest paid, then Electrical, then Mechanical..... and then Civil. Michigan Tech's website gives mean salaries for those fields as 122K, 108K, 97K, and 95K.

They're all bright people; differential equations are not for the weak. But it's like the joke "What do you call the guy who graduates last in his class in med school?" That's who designs your critical infrastructure. The smarter ones get to make Fitbits and Gorilla Glue.

It's interesting people think ChemE is the hardest. I started out in Electrical Engineering and couldn't stand it and switched to ChemE my sophomore year and loved it. For some reason, circuits didn't really stick for me.

358 The Sidney Sheldon Ship Challen Bridge at Loop 610 in Houston, has a 164 ft. clearance.

There is no way they'd make the down-channel Beltway 8 bridge some 14' lower than that.

Beltway 8 bridge might not soar to a full 200 ft., but it's UP there, to be sure. About a decade ago, one man was killed from a ship's crane strike on the Sidney Sheldon Bridge. Which is also slated for replacement, which will occur when I'm far too old to give the slightest hint of a damn.

366 Capitalism strikes again! Texas privately owned utility companies had 6 generators go down because of lack of extra generator capacity (that would cost profits) just like last year. Texans told to turn off their air conditioners so the privately owned utlities don't have to buy electricity from public utilities who by law have to have excess generating capacity. Faux news say the next shortage is hospital medical supplies the n fertilizer shortage so no food have to eat your dogs and cats. Venezueala here we come!

Go get a job as a wet nurse, Retardo. It pays $1K a week minimum. Do something useful.

Retardo illustrates how the marxists do it. Destroy market function, then blame markets for it. Get more power to destroy markets even more. Rinse, repeat.

Watching Tucker, Jen Pskanki actually blamed hoarders for the baby formula shortages. It was greedy mothers hoarding baby formula for their own lard ass babies or something.

Gougers, hoarders, and wreckers. Third world shit hole playbook.
