  • It's the Night of the Blunt Knives at Twitter. (The Verge)

CEO Parag Agrawal is clearing the decks of the most competent senior executives ahead of Elon Musk's takeover so that... I got nothing.

The tweets are weird. "You're great. The best in your field. A perfect fit for the role. Also, fired."

    Anything good?

No. Well, they seem to have fixed some things they recently broke in YouTube, but no.

  • An engineering sample for what is probably AMD's upcoming Ryzen 7800X runs at up to 5.2GHz. (Tom's Hardware)

That's about 10% faster than the current 5800X, and Zen 4 is expected to be 25% faster than Zen 3 at the same speed. And right now I'm on a Zen 1 that is underclocked because it overheats, so this new chip would be quite a bit faster.

  • If you're looking to build a Threadripper workstation, there aren't any. (Tom's Hardware)

AMD can sell everything it makes into the server market at higher margins, so it's not really looking for extra niches where it can sell a few thousand - or tens of thousands - of chips. So it's a good thing that the 16 core Ryzen 7000 will likely be as fast as most Threadripper 3000 chips.

  • BBC Basic for SDL is BBC Basic only for SDL (a cross-platform graphics and sound library. (BBCBasic)

It runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Raspberry Pi, and in your browser, and gives you up to 256MB for your Basic code which is just slightly more than was available on the BBC Micro.

  • If you're not an Ubuntu fan, Fedora 36 is now out. (The Register)

I got started on Red Hat Linux and used it for years, all the way through to CentOS 6, before giving up because of the eternities it took to release CentOS 7 and 8.

  • Getting utilities connected at my new house before I move in and learned something that I hadn't thought of. It has a gas cooktop and gas hot water.

    It doesn't have gas.

Specifically, the town doesn't have gas. Have to get it delivered in bottles.

Universal fibre internet, yes. Gas, no. Guess I'll take that trade.

10 Lost In Space,

I'm watching a video clip of Kathy Barnette talking about her support of BLM and how she believes that systemic racism is a serious issue, and how she thinks cops are itching to shoot black people.
Plus, as a vet myself, her documents of her military service is questionable. Though she has stated she has served for ten years, the documents she has provided state less than eight years.
And no Army vet refers to the various reserves as "Armed Forces Reserves" (there's Navy and Army Reserves) or "Officer Candidacy School" (hint: it's Candidate, not Candidacy), not to mention her inability to remember when she attended, much less if she graduated (though she has claimed that she was "accepted" to OCS.

Pixy - tech question;

The hash that appears at the end of our posts - how is it generated and is it possible for someone to ascertain our actual IP address from them? I'm just the curious type about that sort of stuff.

Also; how is your new home heated? If it also uses bottled gas for heat you're gonna need a big one.

I don't know what to think about her except she is in over her head. As I mentioned in the previous thread she doesn't feel ripe for this race as is indicated by the full press attacks on her by the Dickless Oprah squad. That this stuff didn't come up earlier means she was dismissed by Team DO and were flat out caught by surprised by her recent runup in the polls. That Team DO got blindsided by her is a red flag; sort of sounds like he isn't ripe for this race either. A vanity candidate will get killed by the Dems.

A proper hash function is by definition pretty "one-way". The hash is easily generated, but cannot be reversed easily. In general, the inverse is multi-valued. Several different inputs can generate the same hash.

37 >> with Rebecca De Mornay

I remember a Skinemax flick with her -- think I saw it one night when I was at Clempson Cow Collidge -- late '80s to early '90s, I think.

She's a MILF. Picks up some young buck who is an attendant at a gas station. Gives him the best sex of his life. She has elaborate fantasies. He plays along.

Then one day, she describes a rape fantasy. She wants him to play a rapist and break into her house and rape her. He does it. She shoots him dead.

As he dies, he has this "Why?" look on his face. Cut to a scene of the cops at the house. They're explaining, looks like this well-known rapist has finally met his end.

The cut to a later scene. Rebecca's son is the actual rapist. She's a psychologist. She's telling her son that everything will be okay, 'cause Mommy has fixed it all for him.

55 Tusk - Sam Adams

Take a look at the Brave browser. It is a competent piece of work. I used it for about a year and it always worked but it did lack features. Because of that I went back to Microsoft Edge because certain convivence features I use all the time. In order of less evil to most: Brave

The different question is what search engine does one use. I used Duck Duck Go for quite a while but once again, like Brave, it lacked certain features that I found useful. I finally settled on Bing and once I got over it wasn't Google, I can't tell a lick of difference between the results for most searches. I do restrict what I allow Bing to collect and frequently purge what Microsoft allows me to dump.

Which tools to use here should be made with an informed understanding of what you are signing up for and how to manage them. If I recall Pixy recommends Brave for personal use; I cannot disagree. I prefer Edge/Bing feature richness.

My first house had natural gas and we bought a brand new gas clothes dryer. Moved within two years and took the gas dryer with us and bought bottled gas. It only required a nozzle change on the dryer. I think about once a year we had to have the bottle filled. I suspect gas is cheaper and more efficient than electric, though anymore who knows. But the clothes used to come out of the gas dryer smoking hot and perhaps a little shrunken.

59 New episode of Legend of the Galactic Heroes is called "War Without Weapons."

Admiral Yang has been summoned to the capital to face a secret inquiry by the government of the Freedom Alliance. All is not well as those who protest how the elites are not bearing their fair share in this war against the Empire are viciously attacked by pro-government 'demonstrators' and blamed for attacking themselves.

As Yang races back to Isherholn one of the politicians at the inquiry observes that they, the politicians, are supposed to efficiently distribute the tax money. That for Yang to call them parasites is very kind.

Diesel and home heating oil are 99% the same product, one has dye in it. At $6.49 for diesel in my neck of the woods I won't be buying any home heating oil next winter. But I have a 'passive' solar house that would never freeze in winter. I have a heat pump in our bedroom, set to 67 degrees and three kerosene heaters for quick warm up of den, kitchen, and master bath. Kerosene isn't cheap but it will warm an area quickly. The days of going through 1,000 plus gallons of heating oil a year are over for me.

I am in Las Cruces, NM and I had to replace all my appliances over the last couple of years. My stove, hot water and heat are natural gas. I could have bought a gas dryer but they were quite a bit more money than the electric version. I like my gas stove as it heats up quickly and the controlling the heat is fairly granular. Gas has real charm when the power goes out; when I lived in the PNW we would get hit with storms that would knock the power our for days. It was nice to be able to cook and run the gas furnace off a generator.

158 In other news, Jimmy Carter is still kicking.

164 You'll need power to run your well pump, though.

Good point, and we don't have (but have considered digging) a well.

We're part of a county disaster preparedness group that has come up with a solar solution (of all things) for pumping wells if the grid goes down.

165 Yeah, good point. I think they use 45kg / 100lb gas cylinders, not the really big ones. Still a useful size.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at May 13, 2022 07:20 AM (MqQvv)

You could buy a larger tank and the standby generator. It can come in pretty handy. Around here, we get ice storms around one year in five that knock out power for a week or two at a time. That will cause the pipes to freeze and destroy the house if you don't have a generator and enough fuel to get through it.

Just size the tank appropriately for your needs. How much does the ace.mu.nu server draw? 85 watts?

My wife made FB friends with a niece of mine who lives in FL who just had a baby. I have a FB account but only for research purposes. So suddenly in the 'People You May Know' on my FB page are all these FL residents from the nieces town. FB apparently uses IP addresses for the purpose, not the account name. Anyway, all these smiling happy people with pictures of fish they caught, boats they own, beaches they're hanging out at, etc. (more)

He in the Southern US, propane is delivered in trucks to outside tanks. No swapping of bottles.

Posted by: Chatterbox Mouse at May 13, 2022 07:16 AM

Same here in the NE. For some reason the propane industry has decided that the #1 choice for homeowners is battleship gray colored bottles that define the word ugly.
----
For most industrial gases the color of the bottle is specific to a particular gas: hydrogen=red, oxygen=blue? chlorine=green, etc.

Hey, solar is a fantastic technology if you only need a little bit of power in a specific place.

It's imbeciles trying to replace main electrical plants with thousands of acres of panels, sluicing billions out of the public fisc in the process, who give it a bad name.

So my sister lives in the same FL town with all these smiling happy people. Except she's of the multi-degree, no children variety who is solid leftist to the core. Guess who didn't get invited to the baby shower with all the smiling happy beach-going, boating, and fishing type Floridians? She's pissed off. Actually I think she got pissed on. Deservedly.

173 I have a 'camp stove' for when the electric goes out - which it usually does when dinner is half ready.

Anyway, yesterday we went to a local state park and hiked around before lunch. The wife loves a plain old hot dog cooked over an open flame. So the cooler has hot dogs, rolls, mustard, relish, and onions. Pop open the camp stove, screw in the first fitting and reach for the little bottle of gas. Oops. Forgot it.

They now have the fence ready to surround the Supreme Court, the Capital, and the White House. Plus a 'no-fly' zone around the entire area. They're prepared.

177 "Horrifying things, kewpie dolls."

Reminded of a old educational computer game, "The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary". Play a little carnival game, win a kewpie doll, get your soul sucked inside of it. Run around solving puzzles (as the doll) to find ingredients for a potion to free yourself.

Thinking about it, that could be a good post - nightmare fuel items that were targeted to children.
