George Natsioulis, Night Run Pt. 2

Cat Vice.

No big deal, just a dog enjoying a skate park.

This is going to be me on Memorial Day weekend.

Smiley dog.

Itchin'.

Dog greets owner with random presents every time he comes home.

Hullo!

We'll get your jeep sorted out in just a sec.

Hen fights off a hawk to protect her chicks. I think everything turns out okay. But I can't guarantee the chicks' long-term survival.

Maybe you can beat the train. Maybe you're dead wrong. The guy is not killed; I wouldn't post that kind of thing. What is this, the internet in 2002? But it's still tense. He doesn't come out of it unscathed.

Twitch streamers should stick to accidentally showing their snizzes:

She's okay. The fire department did have to drop by to say "hi."

So, I went out and got the local paper and I see that our incompetent crook of a mayor dedicated a new $1M six port solar powered car charging station at City Hall. Solar powered. With a peak output of 24kw. So if my math is correct, it can charge one Tesla X between the hours of 10AM and 2PM.

85 I was sitting on my balcony having my morning coffee a few months ago, lazily watching a cottontail hop across the street, when suddenly the rabbit jumped high in the air like a jack-rabbit, did a 180 and dived under a van parked by the side of the road.

Split second later, WHAM an eagle strikes out of nowhere. I involuntarily closed my eyes, but when I opened them, fearing the worst, the bunny was safe under the van. The eagle wasn't ready to give up yet though, and perched itself atop the van while the rabbit trembled in fear beneath. That bird was HUUUGE.

Eagles are common here in CO of course, but they do not generally strike on a street in the middle of a mid-city neighborhood like that. A little life or death drama with my coffee. The rabbit outpatienced the eagle, which eventually flew off in search of a more accessible meal.

87 There's a very cool website, something like "Abandoned Airfields", think it's global but of course mostly covers North America. IIRC San Diego had nearly 50 total landing fields during WWII (of course back then 1500 feet of relatively compact flat uncluttered ground was a landing field, at least for everything but heavy bombers).

Until not *that* long ago you could still see the remains of the ASW blimp base near the Del Mar racetrack. White circle (mooring mast would have been in the center) on blacktop, and remnants of building foundations. You could see it just west of the I-5, from the slow lane, if you knew what you were looking at.

153 bill in AR, Willow Run, indeed an amazing story. So far only account I've read of Ford's transition effort was in a book on industrial mobilization for the war (think it was "Freedom's Forge", forget the author).

Edsel brought his team to San Diego and, as you said, they were astonished that the Consolidated production process was more "craft" than mass production. They managed to wrangle everything into mass production - obviously - and the story of the Willow Run plant itself is amazing.

I don't have the numbers (is Anna Puma about?), but I'd guess that Willow Run by itself produced more heavy bombers than all the Axis countries combined.

Many acquaintances and people I've met over the years had mothers who'd worked in the Consolidated plants. The last building, just northeast of Lindbergh Field, has been a USN electronics lab HQ for years, and before that was a cruise missile factory. In all those years, only one B-24 crashed in town, on take-off, fresh off the line. Just behind a house on Lytton Street near MCRD and the old NTC, if you're visiting.

Your voice will continue to suffer if you are still experiencing fluid drainage from your sinuses down your throat. Also swollen glands from a cold will keep my voice messed up until I take the steroids that are normally prescribed for that. After you've fixed the issues a week and it should be normal.

Warm liquids like herbal tea with honey and lemon, and gargling with warm salty water can help to shorten the time.

191 bill, Henry Ford the Senior was very averse to getting involved in war production, I think it was Edsel who by that time had some influence, and another executive that brought Ford in. There was a famous meeting chaired by Big Bill Knudsen, formerly of GM, after he was appointed the first mobilization chief by FDR in spring 1940, at which all the auto industry bigs sat around one table and said what they could do. It's really an amazing story in itself - something like 20 executives sitting around a table, basically deciding who would do what in the greatest industrial mobilization and war effort in human history.

A different species apparently used to occupy executive offices at major industrial corporations, looking at today's wasteland.

One of the perks of being a pilot is the history of our airports. I would say 30% of them are old WWII military bases. Even in the mid-west. Just a few if been into in the Midwest, Ottumwa, IA; Rantoul, IL; Forbes Field, Willow Run of course and many others. A lot of history in those places. Damn near every airport in FL was a WWII base.

263 258 Hummingbirds a constant here, two varieties, but mostly Anna's, others generally stay further from the coast. Only one sighting of a western oriole this spring so far (juvenile male, colors weren't stark/strong - mature ones have beautiful bright yellow/jet black colors) - those idiots ignored the oriole feeder I used to have and always try to feed from the hummingbird feeder. Some years a pair will nest here so we'll see the beautiful male now and then (and you can see him 200 feet away in a tree, thanks to his markings).

271 Came home late one night to my first apartment. Starving, I decided to heat up a pot of meatballs that I had in the fridge. Promptly fell asleep and woke up to the apartment full of smoke. Threw open the window and put the smoking pot on the fire escape, cleared the smoke and went to bed.

Forgot all about the pot until days later when I noticed it on the fire escape. Figured I'd try to clean it and see if it could be salvaged. Opened it up in the kitchen and a swarm of flies filled the room. I was like something from a horror movie. Looked inside the pot and it was crawling with maggots.

Slammed the cover back on and taped the pot closed with duct tape. Opened up all the windows in the apartment hoping all the flies would just leave, and went down to the street. Threw the whole pot into one of the city garbage cans on the corner.

320 Court: California's under-21 gun sales ban unconstitutional
https://t.co/DzM5ONlJ0x

A U.S. appeals court ruled Wednesday that California's ban on the sale of semiautomatic weapons to adults under 21 is unconstitutional.

In a 2-1 ruling, a panel of the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Wednesday the law violates the Second Amendment right to bear arms and a San Diego judge should have blocked what it called "an almost total ban on semiautomatic centerfire rifles" for young adults. "America would not exist without the heroism of the young adults who fought and died in our revolutionary army," Judge Ryan Nelson wrote. "Today we reaffirm that our Constitution still protects the right that enabled their sacrifice: the right of young adults to keep and bear arms."

The Firearms Policy Coalition, which brought the case, said the ruling makes it optimistic age-based gun bans will be overturned in other courts.

My parents eventually gave it to my aunt and uncle when they got married. They used it for years, eventually consigning it to garage duty. I was well into my 50's when they finally gave it to a thrift store.

The International Harvester pick-up was a heavy duty beast of a truck. For many years it held the record for the heaviest road vehicle sold for non-commercial use in the US. It was pretty common to see them around when I was a kid. I've often thought that if I ever hit on the lottery, I'll get one and refurbish it.

331 Jack up there was where the Ordnance Division *didn't* test the Mark VII (?) before the war, right? And I imagine there's lots of interesting stuff found wherever they dredge.

In San Diego years ago, they dredged more of the harbor to accommodate the Nimitz-class carriers, or to accommodate more of them anyway. Initial plan was to use some of the spoil to on north county beaches, which were being washed away by weather at the time. Well.

Aside from the automatic "huh?" at using harbor soil (often very contaminated with heavy metals), another problem developed. I think there were a few incidents of "clang!" as the dredge vaccuums brought up bombs and torpedoes from WWII. One can only imagine the amount of ordnance that fell overboard here in that period, when the harbor was one of the biggest Navy bases in the world.

I believe the sand was barged out to deep water and dumped.

338 Actually Guy, "roughing" is its own penalty, but refs have discretion to call that in situations where an out/out fight doesn't occur. It pretty much covers all after the whistle and egregious other fouls that don't fit under another category.

One of my favorite penalties, when announced in French (so I guess just Montreal now, in the NHL) - "le rudesse". Fighting is good too - "le combat".

Actually it's the starch that causes the boiling over. If you ever use a wooden spoon to stir the skeddi you will note that the starchy bubbles will immediately go down. Some people lay their wooden spoon across the pot and say it stops the over flow. I've never tried it . I just turn down the heat to a slow boil and stir.
