Beaver Reaver Cafe

streetedinborough.jpg
Princes Street, Edinburgh,
by Fayazey

New mama's gonna have her hands full with this one.

Dogs observe Mothers Day, too.

The Stranger.

Turtles rush to the aid of ailing fellow. Well, they "rush," for turtles.

I'm... too sexy for my fur... too sexy for my fur... so sexy I'm sure...

An unexpected guest drops by for the barbecue.

Giving away the bride.

Hour break for lunch, says so right in the union rules.

Baby elephant stands for first time, with a helping trunk from mom.

Itchy hedgehog.

This is how you do the "Chains of Death" trick that magicians do, where assistants wrap a chain around a magician's neck, and then pull it hard. Instead of strangling the magician, the chain passes through his neck. Supposedly.

The trick relies on a fake loop around the "victim's" neck. It requires practice.

Anyway, here are some amateurs doing the trick. Sound on!

I remember commenting to a local when we were eating lunch at an on-base Kanteen or whatever in
Bavaria. All the civilian contractors were drinking beer. Hefe Weissen and Krystal, mostly. He said yup, it was included in their Union contract or somesuch.

Surprisingly this courtesy even applied to US personnel albeit only briefly. You can figure out why, probably.

72 I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Edinburgh once, marvelous city. One afternoon I walked all the way around the Castle, which is set on an ancient volcanic plug rising from the heart of the city. (about a 4 mile walk or so) Wonderful way to see the city. Greyfriars Cemetery is the best, and creepiest, medieval cemetery you'll ever see. This is the one you can walk through and find most of the Harry Potter names, since J.K. Rowling took her lunches there while she was writing it. But my favorite find there was the two Blackadders!

I thought I had some merino top as well, but it seems I spun it all before we left, so I had to order some to practice. It came in late this afternoon, and I prepped some.

After 8 years, I can still use a drop spindle! I've lost some proficiency, but with practice, I'll improve again. So thanks, Saturday Spinners -- I'll be back in the groove shortly!

4" refractor or 6" reflector. 15-20 years ago I was making similar quality clips and photos. Used a web cam and some software to process it. The biggest part to this is how steady the atmosphere is. Gear needed for making this is prolly under $1000 (scope, camera, mount, software) these days. Scope in the $300 range, if new.

What tells me the optical quality/capability of the scope? Details in Saturn. We see hints of banding on the surface, 2 bands in the rings plus the Crep Ring.. We don't see the Cassini's Division nor other banding in the rings.

Scope might be 80mm class refractor, which puts scope price in toe $200 range.

Any way you shake it, the optics on the scope are several orders of magnitude better and half the price of lenses for eyeglasses.

192 What tells me the optical quality/capability of the scope? Details in Saturn. We see hints of banding on the surface, 2 bands in the rings plus the Crep Ring.. We don't see the Cassini's Division nor other banding in the rings.

Any way you shake it, the optics on the scope are several orders of magnitude better and half the price of lenses for eyeglasses.

It's higher strength chemical name for the type that is Roundup. Usually can find such in farm supply stores. But I see no benefit other than cost (IIRC, Roundup was more expensive) between the two. I've used the 41% glyphosate to kill a patch of ground before replanting. Roundup would have done the same job.

253 ..Takes a little effort. But it works. Posted by: nurse ratched at May 09, 2022 09:33 PM (U2p+3)

Nurse is not wrong. But I might hasten to add that it might be easier to buy a kitchen type meat injection syringe, and some of those are quite robust. I used this method to kill off the potato vine that a neighbor (now moved away), had planted. Killed that shit dead.

Similarly, when I cut down an offending palm tree, I drilled six holes, 1/2" wide, and 12" deep into the stump. Filled each with undiluted Roundup, then double-covered the stump with black visqueen, secured with large zip ties. Killed that palm dead, dead, dead.

But I'll admit. Tannerite would've been much more fun, but only until the cops rolled up to the blast zone.

The ones we have here have big berries, but their vines can be about an inch thick, and they can grow twenty feet or more in the air and totally choke out a fruit tree.

256 Well, for fresh cut woody plants you''re trying to kill, Tordon RTU is the bestest, but Glysophate 50/50 (41%) will do during the growing season... NOT in the winter.
Always buy pure glysophate, not RU Plus, or with any other kicker. Most problems come with those products. Ideal is Roundup Pro, or Glysophate Pro... the Pro just means it already has the spreader sticker.
Read the label, there are various concentrates you can mix to. Pre-mixed is almost always 2%. That'll kill the things you really don't want to kill with drift, but not much else... maybe grasses in the gravel.

Posted by: MkY at May 09, 2022 09:45 PM (cPGH3)

257 The easiest way to knock out woody plants I've found is to just add brush killer to glyphosate. Generic brush killer is also available under several different names at Rural King and Tractor Supply. The combination works really well.

Well, actually, when you say "GD this, or GD that", you are beseeching God to condemn this or that to eternal damnation in hell.

260 What exactly is 41% glyphosate
---
Roundup is a trade name for glyphosate. 41% concentration is the highest that's generally available. There are a number of generics that are MUCH cheaper than Roundup. I usually buy it at Tractor Supply or Rural King. I think I last paid $55 for 2 1/2 gallons at Rural King, which will last me several years.

I remember back in 2012 on election night watching the results come in and Romney is getting hammered. When Obama was pushed over the top I made a comment along the lines of, okay, SCOAMF won, time to call it a night. Some dude reacted...poorly. Just in complete denial. He had a dream that Romney would win and didn't like the dream being destroyed.

I'm pessimistic on the opinion being the majority opinion. I say so and I'm pissing all over the dream and some dudes just really hate that.
