The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I was not just a lump of cells, as you can see I’m still not just a lump of cells, my life has value. And that was one of the reasons why it was very disturbing when I saw Met Oz running for this particular race when I’ve seen him on numerous occasions and specifically at the Breakfast Club saying that my life was nothing more than an acorn with electrical currents.”Pennsylvania Republican Senate candidate Kathy Barnette

Quote II

“We can’t be an institution that can be bullied into giving you just the outcomes you want. The events from earlier this week are a symptom of that,” SCOTUS Associate Justice Clarence Thomas

Quote III

"They were consciously and collectively working together to see his kids. "I don't really understand how he could be in violation by working together to visit with his children." Trey Dolezal, a lawyer and sports agent

Quote IV

“I’m not asking for troops on the ground, but to make sure that Ukraine can expel Russia and that Putin is a war criminal in the eyes of the world and he’s prosecuted. Putin must go.” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

They really aren't Pro-Choice. They are Pro-Violence.

A Wisconsin pro-life group’s office was set on fire early Sunday and vandalized with abortion-themed graffiti in what authorities are investigating as an arson.

The Wisconsin Family Action headquarters suffered fire damage after someone threw a Molotov cocktail inside the building in Madison, which was discovered after a passerby saw flames coming out of the building at about 6 a.m., according to police.

“Arson investigators are working with fire department officials to determine an exact cause,” said the Madison police incident report. “A molotov cocktail, which did not ignite, was thrown inside the building. It also appears a separate fire was started in response.”

If I were a betting man, I would bet that Madison cops have wrapped this up and it is now officially a cold case.

Planning for your retirement? This could be the ticket.

Your new ‘retirement’ home could be a cruise ship

Cruise ships offer many of the essential elements older Americans need to thrive: organized activities, a decent level of medical care and, most crucially, a built-in community of like-minded travelers.

Upgraded connectivity has also allowed semi-retired cruisers to be based at sea while still working.

For nearly two decades, Jeff Farschman, 72, has spent his golden years like many other adventurous retirees — enjoying leisure cruises to exotic ports of call.

But unlike many of his fellow cruise passengers, Farschman basically lives at sea. He spends months traveling the world’s oceans and waterways — half of the year, if not more. Although he still keeps a physical home near where he grew up in Delaware, Farschman is now part of a growing cohort of older folks who are literally “retiring” on cruise ships.

“Pandemic aside, I’ve been cruising for seven to eight months a year,” Farschman said. “I am a world traveler and explorer type and cruising has literally allowed me to see the entire planet.”

On the other hand I haven't stopped at a gas station in the 5 decades or so where the pumps didn't work.

One in four public electric vehicle charging stations in the San Francisco Bay Area does not work, according to a new study.

The report, produced by David Rempel of the University of California at Berkeley, suggested that while California — especially the Bay Area — is trying to make the shift to electric vehicles in a hurry, the current infrastructure is not ready.

Small and a efficient government. A pipe dream which probably leads to climate change and a larger and ineffective government.(H/T Isophorone Blog)

The EPA’s biggest union, signaling its dissatisfaction with the White House’s level of action on climate, will ask the Biden administration to declare a national climate emergency and take other ambitious steps on the environment.

The declaration of a national emergency would kick-start 123 statutory powers that aren’t otherwise available to the executive branch, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. Included among them is the hiring of more climate scientists, engineers, and lawyers at the EPA, a goal shared by both the American Federation of Government Employees Council 238 and the Biden administration.

The request represents a marker for the American Federation of Government Employees Council 238 when it sits down with the Environmental Protection Agency on June 13 to negotiate a new contract.

“Maybe it’s a move-the-goalposts type of idea,” said Joyce Howell, chief negotiator for the union and an attorney in the EPA’s Philadelphia office. “There’s a window of opportunity for significant advances in the federal labor movement right now because of our president, so why not swing for the fences?”

Man accused of killing his wife wins GOP primary from jail

I prefer to obtain my caffeine the old fashioned way: Not splashing around in Nevada's Lake Mead.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — From prescribed medication to illicit drugs, we are leaving traces behind in the water cycle – those chemicals are moving through the Las Vegas Wash and into Lake Mead, prompting scientists at the College of Southern Nevada to sound the alarm.

Researchers and students at CSN’s School of Sciences & Mathematics took part in a global study to investigate the effects of pharmaceuticals on the world’s waterways. As part of the project, the team took samples up and down the Las Vegas Wash, the 12-mile-long channel, which moves treated wastewater out of the Las Vegas valley and into Lake Mead.

All treated sewage and runoff move through the wash and into the lake.

The way to a Russian solider's heart is through his vodka apparently.

Something really weird is going on with Russian soldiers and their ability to drink vodka.

Tech blog Bleeping Computer spotted reports yesterday that multiple distributed denial of service — a type of attack that overwhelm a server by flooding it with junk traffic — had disrupted alcohol sellers’ access to a portal used by the Russian government to coordinate distribution of alcohol.

The tech site pointed to Russian news outlet Vedomosti, which is reporting major problems with alcohol sales and purchases.

Maybe this will happen. But can you imagine the congestion with flying "Air Taxis".

As urban traffic gets more miserable, entrepreneurs are looking to a future in which commuters hop into "air taxis" that whisk them over clogged roads.

Companies such as Archer, Joby and Wisk are working on electric-powered aircraft that take off and land vertically like helicopters then propel forward like planes.

"'The Jetsons' is definitely a reference that people make a lot when trying to contextualize what we are doing," Archer Vice President Louise Bristow told AFP, referring to a 1960s animated comedy about a family living in a high-tech future.

"The easiest way to think about it is a flying car, but that's not what we're doing."

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. I don't care..................

Do "They" ever ponder why they are hated?

In a letter obtained by American Greatness, the U.S. Department of Justice is threatening defendants charged with seditious conspiracy in the sprawling Oath Keepers case to accept plea deals or face life in prison.

Matthew Graves, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia handling every prosecution related to the events of January 6, 2021, imposed a May 6 deadline for the remaining defendants to accept plea deals. Three men have pleaded guilty to seditious conspiracy; nine others, including Oath Keepers’ founder Stewart Rhodes, have rejected government attempts to reach a plea.

“We write to advise you of applicable penalties that could apply upon conviction at trial,” Graves’ chief prosecutor in the case, Kathyrn Rakoczy, wrote to defense attorneys in a letter dated May 2. (Every January 6 defendant who has faced a jury trial in Washington, D.C. has been found guilty on all charges by jurors following brief deliberations.)

I feel bad for this guy and his family. But, I'm not sure why it is the vehicle owner's fault.

A Michigan man who left his car at a dealership for an oil change and tire rotation is being sued after his vehicle was involved in the death of one of the dealership's employees.

Sergio Enrique Diaz-Navarro took his red 2019 Wrangler to a Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership on March 13, 2020, and 19-year-old lube technician Daniel Thompson worked on the car. After the service was complete, the vehicle "lurched forward" as the young employee attempted to operate it, crushing 42-year-old mechanic Jeffrey Hawkins against a cabinet, court records show.

A group called the Tyre Extinguishers have taken credit.

Its spokesperson, calling themselves ‘Mercedes Driver’, said similar action had taken place in the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and the United States.

When you play with fire or Molotov cocktails expect to be a Genius Award Winner.

Raleigh, North Carolina police officers on Saturday fatally fired upon a male suspect who’d allegedly been throwing Molotov cocktails at police cruisers and officers alike.

The incident reportedly began around 1:20 pm in the parking lot of the Raleigh Police Department’s southeast district office when an officer spotted a man setting police cruisers on fire using Molotov cocktails, according to local station WNCN.

Too misanthropic for you? This guy is also a Genius Award Winner.

Tyrone man is behind bars after he reportedly drove himself to his arraignment on DUI charges while drunk.

Lawrence E. Williams, 58, showed up to his arraignment with Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller Thursday at 11 a.m. while he was visibly drunk, according to charges filed by the Tyrone Police Department. As soon as he entered the courtroom, officers said they could smell alcohol. They also noted he had “extremely red, bloodshot eyes.”

This arraignment was for a previous DUI case from April 22 when he crashed his car into a fence on SR 865 at the intersection of East 5th Street in Bellwood. At this time, Williams was already on probation for two other DUI cases from 2021.

Well, 82-year-old Tom Peek — who had never made the shot before Wednesday — can now say he’s made two.

“I’ve been playing off and on for 50 years, and got several close within a foot or so,” Peek said. “Nothing ever dropped in until [Wednesday]. It seems like they all wanted to fall in. It was fun.”

28 Mother's Day funny-

My wife's mother will turn 90 this year. She is fairly recently widowed. A few days ago she mentioned that she has trouble remembering what day it is, so two of my wife's siblings came up with separate solutions. Wife's brother bought grandma-mom a digital clock with day/date/time readouts. Wife's sister bought her...

...a set of seven panties, each emblazoned with a different day of the week (M,T,W,Th,F,Sa,Su).

She told my wife on the phone today, "I guess I'll just have to look at my undies to know what day it is!!!"

I'd say this is true if we're talking none of the pumps working. However, at least one pump not working is pretty common. I once went to Sam's for gas, and half of their pumps were closed.

I'm a lousy golfer. I've had one. Didn't get to see it. Hooked a 7-iron that must have barely hit the green and its roll must have hit the flag dead center. The cup wasn't visible from the tee, it was blocked by a hill. Looked in the sand traps for it until someone said "check the cup." Everyone else was more excited about it than me. Pure luck.

Michigan is notorious for crazy no-fault legal standards.

The plaintiff's are having to sue the driver to be made whole since MI law basically says "nope you cannot sue the dealer" the dealership has had a ruling of indemnity placed on them to bond out the likely negligence of the driver.

I'm sure it can all be traced back to a favor for the big three legislatively once upon a time.

What is curious is the dealership actively being enabled the hail mary of dodging indemnification.

To put it in practical terms it is as though you are holding the bank who gave a loan to a little league group to buy baseballs "legally responsible" for the 9 year old girl who killed a person in roid rage by beaning them with 107 MPH curveballs "legally culpable" but then forcing her parents to bond out the financial culpability.

Probably was inspired by some fear that an employee could put a dealership on the hook for a billion dollars in 1960s dollars.

139 There is a lot of VC money being poured into air taxis. Everyone is going around saying it is a mega billion $$$ field ready to just pop open. The big companies joined them for a while but when Boeing went into a dive they pulled out. And now there's easy money to be made blowin stuff up in defense and they care even less.

But while the VC money is still there, they will all hit a regulatory wall. Any service will quickly hit a saturation point traffic-wise and the authorities will say no. As a result it will only be for ultra-rich shuttling from home/office over to major bizjet hubs. Like what a helicopter can now do. It will be many decades before the infrastructure problems are overcome and air taxis are available to the hoi palloi.

Also, the mandarin spoken words for 'he' and 'she' are pronounced the same. They have different symbols, though.

152 So been sussing out Trek chronology because Star Drek: Woke New Worlds mentions World War III.

In Bjo Trimble's Concordance, got the 2d edition, it mentions World War III was nuclear and killed 37 million people. She lists the episode as "Bread and Circuses."

In the Okuda's Star Trek Chronology: The History of the Future things get a bit muddled since it tries to tie in TNG and DS9 into the whole canon. In this the episode that lists 37 million dead is "A Piece of the Action" and apparently they link Col Green from the episode "The Savage Curtain" to this World War III.

Obviously I need to watch a few episodes of TOS. Plus hit up Roddenberry's own Star Trek book that was written during the second season and see if David Gerrold's book World of Trek sheds any further light on the matter.

Meanwhile the YouTube person Call Me Chato has this to say of the first episode, they had all this money and all we got was this nothing burger of an episode. But he does think Pike's hair is impressive.

I won't repeat what you were replying to but their comment was short crude and I would have taken it as a direct insult. I don't know what I would have written but I can tell you this, I think you were sincere, emotionally honest, and more mature in your reply than I could have ever managed, by a mile. 208 There were two surrenders. First one, Jodl (German operations chief) flew to Reims, France, night of May 7, where he signed surrender documents in presence of SHAEF leadership. At first the German delegation tried their separate peace gambit, again, offering to surrender to western allied forces. SHAEF (Ike) said nuh-uh, "simultaneous and unconditional surrender on all fronts" remained the requirement. After communicating with the successor "government" in Flensburg, the Germans signed the documents.

Another signing event took place on May 8 in the evening, in Berlin, with Marshal Zhukov the senior allied officer, and senior western allied officers present. Cessation of operations was set at 11:01PM, central Euro time, which was already May 9 in Russia, thus Victory Day is May 9 there.

Next thing I know another very cute chick is slipping the garter on the chick who caught the bouquet, but in a seductive way. I turned to some of the people at the table and said "I'll be in my bunk". For some reason the dude who caught the garter passed it off to the one chick. He had one of these little 1 inch long pony tail man bun things. I turned to my brother and said, thats what happens when you have a man bun. 219 Was reading about the Polish-Soviet war. Interesting anecdote - in 1920 it looked like the Poles were finished and that the Soviets would drive onto Warsaw and finish them off.

Lenin and Stalin then changed the target of one of their armies to take Lviv from Poland instead since they thought they had enough forces to take Warsaw and this would let them spread into southeast Europe before the western nations were ready.

And...the Poles managed to pull off a risky maneuver that turned the tide of the war and save Warsaw, but not Lviv. Had Lenin not been so overconfident though the war and the interwar period might have gone very differently.

The victim's family is suing the owner because there's nobody else to sue. The employer can't be sued because it was an employee on employee accident.

What will eventually happen is that the auto dealer's insurance will pay whatever amount if the owner loses. No, I don't know why. But it was in the story.

A US Navy veteran of WWII, Dempsey’s final moments were captured on hidden camera as the 89-year-old man died begging for help from nurses who clearly didn’t care. The case took so long to adjudicate because the use of the video evidence of the crime was challenged all the way to the Georgia State Supreme Court."

We had 4 grandmothers, 2 mothers. Now we buy none, her Mom Jo was the last, died last yr.

I called my Dad, only one still standing amongst our progenitors. OMG, too much info. Yes, I knew he dated my Mom since they were 15. He had told me they went out to Lowell Park on the lunch hour in high school.

OK, stop Dad. I knew they md in Feb and I was born 8 months later in Oct.

Tonight he said...I shouldn't yell you this, but we were lucky your Mom didn't get pregnant before she was 18.

281 I'll give you a post-humous news story for the ONT. Back in '85, before my life was disrupted by my criminal brother, before my solidity was destroyed by a '99 divorce.

I met and shot skeet at the NSSA HQ in San Antonio, with the (now) late Col. Applegate. The man could still bust clays at a rate far greater than me, but his recollections of working with Fairbairn, Sykes and Fitz, were fading even then.

But, I met and shot with one of the GIANTS of WWII clandestine forces, and conversed with him at length, in the doing. This wasn't but a year or two after the Cult Applegate suicides in CA. A distant cousin, to be sure, but the stigma carried into the (then) present, strongly. Col. Applegate felt the shame even though, it was none of his own.

Pay attention, Horde, to your encounters. They may yet be of a far greater nature than you know.

Re watch/clock accuracy. I've been rambling about this stuff for a while. Just noticed something. I've got a Casio G-shock, old style. That thing is quite accurate. In over 6 months run time since I last set it with the NIST, it is still within a second. It's slightly fast, a few hundred milliseconds. Over 6 months.

In contrast, I've got a Casio G-shock "atomic watch" that syncs with the NIST signal from Boulder. That thing's internals will get out of whack by over a second in about 1 week.

But the other one is damned impressive accuracy. It will take it over a year to be off by 1 whole second.

Back when I was nearer 29 I lived about a two hour drive to Col. Applegate’s home in Oregon.
I read that he still had some of the original first production Smachets that he has designed for sale.
I called and he personally answered the phone. I was a little surprised to speak directly to him. I asked about the Smachets. He said he had one left and the price was $400. I gulped and paused while looking at my wallet..
The Col. sensed my hesitancy and said this is a collectors item and will be more valuable in the future. I choked on the price and have kicked myself ever since. I missed an opportunity to not only own an original Smachet, but to go and pick it up and meet Col Applegate. Not the first or last of my poor decisions.

Posted by: Shiggz at May 09, 2022 03:39 AM (0SrVS)

311 Well, I guessed wrong. I figured Putin would deliver the standard Victory Day speech. It had the structure and touchstones of such a speech, but he added a lot of material on today's situation.

A condensed version of Russia's gripes about post-Soviet western military expansion, a little thing I didn't entirely catch about values, and several references to Donbass including the civilian victims of shelling since 2014 by "neo-nazis".

One interesting little detail, at one point he referred to Great Patriotic War heroes General Vatutin, and Lyudmila Pavlichenko (top Soviet female sniper). Vatutin, one of the best Soviet generals, was killed not by the Wehrmacht but by Ukrainian anti-Soviet guerillas. Clever choice.

In his final exhortation before the anthem and artillery salute, he added "for Russia, for our motherland" to the usual holiday language.

324 He mentioned Crimea also. And Russia has been looking for a deal since long before February 24, of course, so definitely open to a deal. Crimea's not open for discussion of course. Despite the situation, wouldn't be so sure Moscow is open to a deal that doesn't address the big and primary issue, Ukraine's military future.

And was wondering what other references would be made in the various parades across Russia to the current unpleasantness. Didn't hear any of the speeches in the regions, but noticed large "Z" decals, using St. George ribbon colors, on many vehicles, even WWII ones.

They've added nice graphic info for the military vehicles in the Moscow parade. And lots of nice small remote cameras on vehicles. Wondering whether, as in November 1941, when the forces marching through Red Square went right to the front nearby, some of this equipment will be heading southwest after the parade ...

Ditto! How do we make that happen?

Mother's Day was nice. Saw daughter son in law and baby on Saturday. They came to mom's. They brought me a large pot of flowers that daughter planted and decorated with Hailey's handprints.
Mom wasn't too sure who they all were, but she smiled and cooed at her great-granddaughter.

#1 son stayed the weekend to help as I need an extra hand when moving mom. #3 text me early with mom day wishes, and he is my God-send with dealing with Mr. I. I am a very lucky and grateful mom!

331 Morning, all!

I made the Top 10 commenters list again? Whee! (Though as I said on the Book Thread, it's sort of like checking the obituaries in the paper every morning. If you're not there, then you can go ahead with your day.)

Foggy this morning. Not outside, me. Apparently I need a little more coffee. This will be a busy week for me: writing group Thursday night, a work reception on Friday from 4 to 6, and then haircut on Saturday. I look forward seriously to Saturday afternoon, lemme tell ya.

Posted by: SFGoth at May 09, 2022 03:26 AM (KAi1n)

On an old thread, click the "Access Comments" link.
The URL that will then show up in the search bar will need an edit; you'll have, say (for the book thread yesterday):

http://minx.cc/?post=398975

Change minx.cc to acecomments.mu.nu (just like you see at the top of the current page, now).

I need a makeover!!!!

No, just haircut and beard trim. I wear a "Commander Riker" style beard (which I grew before he appeared with his), and while I can trim it at home, I never seem to get it an even length the way my barber does. The strain is that it's gonna be hot outside, and that wears on me.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at May 09, 2022 04:16 AM (c6xtn)

344 Haven't had my haircut since 2019. It was cut short then, chin length. It's nearly to the middle of my shoulder blades now.

349 Last time I got hair cut/styled/highlighted was wedding day 13 years ago. Trim the ends myself when it looks ratty. It used to be two-tone, white over dark brown, which looked pretty unusual when braided, LOL.

All white now and I'm not 60 yet...

Posted by: JQ at May 09, 2022 04:25 AM (dpnJh)

350 I'll confess my last professional haircut was about a week before everything got locked down 2 years ago. I don't have much anyway so have hair shears to use.

Posted by: Skip at May 09, 2022 04:29 AM (2JoB8)

351 I'm still dark blonde with more gray/silver strands than a few years ago. Mom started to go gray in her early 40s and was all gray by 60. ( i'm 61) dad was salt and pepper into his 80s. His last few years his turned all white

354 Bet your hair is beautiful, MLii!

I started graying in my 20s. Started at the temples, which made cool streaks when I pulled it back. Whole top was white by 35, dark brown mostly in the back. Looked like it was 'done' that way, or so I've been told.

357 That sounds pretty, JQ!

I pretty much don't care about bad hair days. Living a year bald cured that! When it came back 1st time it was jet black, then 2nd time, my natural color with gray, but curly! Like unbelievably curly! The curly took about 2 years or so to grow out, so now it's back to my normal fly-away unmanageable mess

367 "I feel bad for this guy and his family. But, I'm not sure why it is the vehicle owner's fault."

It's not, you just don't understand how L&I laws work. Because of L&I insurance, employees cannot sue their employer, as the L&I insurance is supposed to cover whatever happens to an employee on the clock. In this case, that's exactly what's happening.

The family is suing the vehicle owner, not because he's responsible, but because this is a way around that law. The vehicle owner's insurance company will subrogate with the employer's liability policy through a process called indemnification, so that the employer's policy will be hit with the bill.

Worst case, the owner's insurance policy will counter-sue the employer, but it probably won't come to that. The owner isn't on the hook for any of this, except for the inconvenience.

Stupid laws cause stupid results, but the L&I laws exist for good reason.
