The Morning Rant: Samantha Power and the Catastrophe of Government-Imposed Organic Farming

In western countries, the modern left has its own religion, which I jokingly refer to as The Sustainable Organic Church of The Carbon Apocalypse. While it’s fun to mock them, their religion is a death cult. Their goals of eliminating carbon energy and eliminating modern agriculture would kill an unthinkable number of people.

Sri Lanka banned all non-organic pesticides and fertilizers in 2021 and the results were, well, apocalyptic.

I’ll get to that in just a moment, but first, here is Samantha Power, a Biden official with the title of “Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development,” gushing about using the current fertilizer shortage as a catalyst to replace modern agriculture with fertilizer-free, organic agriculture.

Samantha Power - Fertilizer.JPG

Fertilizer shortages are real now because Russia is a big exporter of fertilizer. And even though fertilizer is not sanctioned, less fertilizer is coming out of Russia.

As a result, we're working with countries to think about natural solutions like manure and compost, and this may hasten transitions that would have been in the interest of farmers to make eventually anyways, so...

Never let a crisis go to waste.

“Never let a crisis go to waste.” This ghoul is willing to starve the world in her pursuit of organic religious obedience.

We have a recent example of just how quickly her organic utopia can collapse an economy and starve its people. Sri Lanka just tried it.

IN SRI LANKA, ORGANIC FARMING WENT CATASTROPHICALLY WRONG - A nationwide experiment is abandoned after producing only misery [Foreign Policy – 3/05/2022]

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa promised in his 2019 election campaign to transition the country’s farmers to organic agriculture over a period of 10 years. Last April, Rajapaksa’s government made good on that promise, imposing a nationwide ban on the importation and use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and ordering the country’s 2 million farmers to go organic.

So how’d it go?

The result was brutal and swift. Against claims that organic methods can produce comparable yields to conventional farming, domestic rice production fell 20 percent in just the first six months. Sri Lanka, long self-sufficient in rice production, has been forced to import $450 million worth of rice even as domestic prices for this staple of the national diet surged by around 50 percent.

So a country that had been able to feed itself was suddenly unable to feed itself, thanks to organic farming. It’s a good thing there were still other less-enlightened countries producing non-organic rice for Sri Lanka to import, thus averting starvation.

The ban also devastated the nation’s tea crop, its primary export and source of foreign exchange.

Having destroyed its tea crop that it formerly exported, Sri Lanka now lost a major source of foreign revenue. So where would the revenue come from to pay for the imported rice needed to stave off starvation? Yeah, that proved to be a problem. The country’s currency collapsed.

Faced with angry protests, soaring inflation, and the collapse of Sri Lanka’s currency, the government finally suspended the policy for several key crops—including tea, rubber, and coconut—last month, although it continues for some others.

The good news is that the government is backing away from the fertilizer ban. The bad news is how much human suffering that policy brought on in such a short time.

Human costs have been even greater. Prior to the pandemic’s outbreak, the country had proudly achieved upper-middle-income status. Today, half a million people have sunk back into poverty. Soaring inflation and a rapidly depreciating currency have forced Sri Lankans to cut down on food and fuel purchases as prices surge.

At its most benign, organic food is a status-seeking way of buying groceries, providing a fancy hood ornament for basic foodstuffs, with consumers also getting a satisfying dose of smugness as a reward for the premium they paid. For farmers willing to take lower crop yields in exchange for higher margins on their agricultural products, why not? More power to them if the math works.

However, while lower crop yields on a small fraction of farmland are no big deal. Lower crop yields across ALL farmland set the stage for mass food shortages.

Replacing “artificial” fertilizers with manure is simply not a substitute. There isn’t enough land or livestock to produce enough manure. And by the way, the same people agitating to eliminate artificial fertilizers are also the ones agitating to eliminate meat. No meat production equals no manure production.

“Poverty is the natural state of mankind” goes the famous phrase. Sri Lanka plunged its country into food shortages, poverty, and economic collapse in very short order, thanks to organic agriculture. That debacle is a reminder of just how quickly we can revert to mankind’s natural state.

Given the opportunity to fully implement their green agenda, Samantha Power and her co-religionists would inflict widescale poverty on the US as surely and swiftly as happened in Sri Lanka.

There is a reason we got away from "organics" 100 years ago.

Very few "natural" ANYTHING scales up to commercial size, be it farming or energy.

Solar/wind might power a home. Won't scale up for commercial applications. Same with farming. You MIGHT be able to grow/can enough food for your family if you have enough land, but you aren't feeding your town with what little you can produce.

GMOs are pretty awesome imo, but yeah, some farmers grow some non-GMO in some fields to get the premium .. probably in their cleaner fields, and not every year. But the GMOs also allow for cleaner fields, meaning fewer chemicals, and safer chemicals.

All that extra CO2 in the air helps as well.

Question for Powers: if the transition is in the best interests of farmers as you assert, then why have they not made that transitional already? What counter-market forces have been in play that prevented farmers from making this change on their own? If it is in their best interests but they by and large do *not* make the change, then to what do you attribute their irrationality? What is the basis of your assertion that this is the best thing for farmers, and what is the reasoning behind your belief that you understand the mechanics, chemistry, yield, market forces, hedging, markets and other aspects of the agriculture business better than farmers who do this for a living as opposed to those who make their living by advising foreigners as to government policy goals?

Progress is difficult. Collapse is fairly easy. The more complex a society is - and the modern countries are extraordinarily complex indeed - the easier it is to make a mistake that fucks it all up virtually overnight. There are a lot of major supports and kicking them out willy-nilly isn't exactly a safe thing to do.

The worst part is that you don't necessarily know which of those supports are vital and which aren't. You do know for some of them, though. If your primary exports are agricultural, then kicking the "agriculture" strut out of your structure is a bad idea. If you have a fully industrialized modern economy, then kicking the "energy" strut out of your structure is also a bad idea.

126 At its most benign, organic food is a status-seeking way of buying groceries, providing a fancy hood ornament for basic foodstuffs, with consumers also getting a satisfying dose of smugness as a reward for the premium they paid.

----------------

And this is all it should be. Leave it to this and it will grow accordingly. The thing about status products is eventually most people seek it - if it is obtainable. So if organic food is as beneficial as people thing (its not), it will grow in popularity.

We will probably see more organic farming only because eventually you may have to grow your own crops to survive.

The benefit is it may restore some survivalist tendencies that have always served America well.

135 European farming agencies have done some good work in figuring out ways to get more bang out of their fertilizer buck. The idea is not to eliminate artificial fertilizers, but to make better fertilizers and apply them more judiciously to get maximum crop yield. Less money spent on chemicals, less chemicals building up in the ground, maximized crop yields, etc.

There's always room for progress given ingenuity and technology. The "progressive" ideology has no interest in actual, tangible progress though. Just in the destruction of the Now in service of an impossible, nonsensical Then.

Lots of middle-aged men in suits and nice shoes - many from American and Europe - trying to make agriculture happen with no experience as to how damned difficult it is. There is a reason many kibbutzim failed, and it isn't just that collectivism doesn't work. It was a rough-as-hell transition, even though the people there were there voluntarily and wanted to succeed. Add slavery into the mix and shit goes sideways even faster.

"Biosolids treated once are called Class B biosolids, and can be used with various restrictions, because while the pathogen levels are reduced by a single treatment, they’re not completely gone. That requires a second treatment - often using high temperatures - and turns the biosolids into Class A biosolids, which have no detectable pathogens and can be used anywhere."

Unless you're eating carnivores - which people don't do unless they absolutely need to, because they make lousy meat - all meat is plant-based. It's one of the reasons I find those "plant-based" meat substitutes so funny.

Meat is also all natural, which the "plant-based" substitutes are not.

Well, that would not be necessary Mr. President. It could easily be accomplished with a computer. And a computer could be set and programmed to accept factors from youth, health, sexual fertility, intelligence, and a cross section of necessary skills. Of course it would be absolutely vital that our top government and military men be included to foster and impart the required principles of leadership and tradition. Naturally, they would breed prodigiously, eh? There would be much time, and little to do. But ah with the proper breeding techniques and a ratio of say, ten females to each male, I would guess that they could then work their way back to the present gross national product within say, twenty years.

185 Power is another one of those arrogant leftist twats who has always been wrong on every issue, but thinks she's a natural genius. For example, she was one of the foreign policy "experts" who came up with the ludicrous "R2P" (responsibility to protect) nonsense that was used as the justification for Obama to unilaterally decide to take out Quadaffi's government in Libya -- with no plan for what was to replace it (the genius lightworker Barky later admitted that he had never thought about what would fill the power vacuum he was creating in terrorist-strewn Libya).

Like Jaime Gorelick, Power has a long history of screwing up everything she touches. And like Gorelick, she always walks away scot-free after her debacles, leaving somebody else to clean up her mess, as she prepares to assume her next Dim-appointed position of power.

This is a good starting point for a thread: Would you and your family be able to survive even ONE month?
No water
No power
No food in stores
No fuel available
Would you have at least a camp stove, chlorine, some place to get water or have some on hand? A way to cook outside via wood or charcoal? A way to flush toilets? A way to heat water to at least take a 'bird bath'?

There are probably a lot more questions of this type. It would be interesting what we would come up with.

I suspect that these crackpots have spent their entire lives living in big blue balls shithole cities and the closest they ever come to actual farms is flying at 30,000 feet from shithole to shithole. The lower yields from using cow crap for fertilizer, an ever diminishing product in their world, is made even worse by their plans to eliminate gas/diesel powered engines. Modern agriculture operates over vast spaces. The only place the technology and infrastructure to make these "green" farm vehicles work is in their damn manifestos read at their climate conferences. Updating the rural electrical system is not only technically challenging but the costs of doing so would bankrupt most farms. This would solve worrying about food production in the long term because everyone would starve to death within a couple years. So much winning.

I see a lot of cities imploding when it becomes too dangerous for truckers to bring in supplies.

Does Samantha really think she's going to be unaffected? Or, is she the kind of true believer who is willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good? (seriously, this dead-eyed bint isn't very bright, and, again, just might be willing to see things through, because she believes her approach will create a better tomorrow)

Animal husbandry is one of the hardest jobs around because it is literally 24/7 possibility of emergencies with livestock. Row crop farming involves heavy labor at the beginning and end of the planting cycle but requiring weeding and pest control if using ground cultivation techniques. Weeding and pest control tasks for now have been reduced in labor because of chemicals but absent those chemicals, requires backbreaking stoop labor in order to make a crop.

459 Here's the problem with manure: DuPont makes this herbicide for pastures called Grazon. It kills broadleaf plants (everything but grass). It's supposed to be harmless to livestock. Indeed, it passes right through horses and cows and into . . . their manure. Last I checked no one knew the active life of this chemical. But if you get manure contaminated with it, and spread it, it will kill or wreck your plants and trees. One little clod in a bed is enough, because all the plants' roots will find it. At best it stunts their growth and they produce tiny fruit.

How much do you want to bet that the manure you get from a horse riding school that only uses organic hay has some Grazon in it? All it takes is a horse brought in that consumed treated hay before it arrived.

I loved using horse barn sweepings, until one little clod killed one of my beds. I had to dig out all the soil and replace it.
