New York Times Reporter: Studies Show That School Closings Seriously Harmed Children -- And Were Driven By Partisan Democrat Politics

We knew both of these. It's a bit shocking that the second is being admitted.... by the New York Times, of all partisan propaganda mills.

John Sexton digests the study of school closures in Michigan, comparing schools that closed and schools that stayed open, and schools in Republican dominated areas and schools in Democrat dominated areas.

Because all schools closed for at least part of the two year period of the pandemic, all students saw some level of learning loss.

But those who mostly had in-person schooling only saw a 20% learning loss in math, while those who mostly had "remote learning" saw 50% learning loss.

And the remote learning took place in Democrat dominated areas.

Many of these [high poverty] schools are in major cities, which tend to be run by Democratic officials, and Republicans were generally quicker to reopen schools. High-poverty schools are also more likely to have unionized teachers, and some unions lobbied for remote schooling.

Partisanship played a much stronger role in local decisions than state decisions. We analyze local district reopening plans and public opinion on reopening in the politically competitive state of Michigan. Partisanship was much more associated with district reopening plans than COVID-19 rates. Republicans in the Michigan public were also far more favorable than were Democrats toward in-person learning. States' decisions to leave reopening plans to their districts opened the way for students' experiences to be shaped by their area's partisanship.

Were many of these problems avoidable? The evidence suggests that they were. Extended school closures appear to have done much more harm than good, and many school administrators probably could have recognized as much by the fall of 2020.

Though the New York Times doesn't dare spell it out this clearly, John Sexton helps them along:

Democrats and their pet teacher's unions are responsible for making pandemic learning loss twice as bad as it had to be for millions of students.

More than twice as bad -- 50% as compared to 20%.

And of course Democrats, as they often (but not always) do, principally harmed their own voters.

Which might be among the reasons black voters are finally beginning to abandon them.

Democrats have lost 15 points of support from black voters. This is partly because blacks identifying themselves as "conservative" -- who have nevertheless traditionally voted Democrat -- are finally shifting to voting Republican.

The piece wraps up by noting that in the past even conservative Black voters have tended to vote for Democrats but after 2020 there's some indication that could be changing. Hillary won self-described conservative Black voters by 58 points in 2016. But in 2020 Biden won them by 20 points. If that pattern continues the majority of Black voters will still side with Democrats but the margin may shift enough that Democratic advantages in some close races could evaporate.

I checked the linked article but this isn't there: what is "learning loss," exactly? Is it "student knew what a fourth-grader should know during his last pre-pandemic academic year but doesn't know what a fifth-grader should know during the pandemic year" or does it mean that the student actually regressed - as in "the student tested at fourth-grade levels pre-pandemic but tests revealed that the student tested at third-grade levels during or after the pandemic" or something else?

Usually I've seen this stuff measured in years. So a theoretical 4th grader has so many years of education and should be performing at such and such level, and if you're a 5th grader at that level you've lost a year. So 50% learning loss would seem to me to mean that they only got half-value of a normal learning year.

We did that before they got the Zoom set up. They were delivering lessons by school bus, and we would do the teaching, and send the completed lessons back. We thought about homeschooling, but kids were supposed to be going back in the fall. But then they yanked the rug out at the last minute, and we scurried to get home school curricula and materials set up.

After the first year of home schooling, there was no reason to go back, mask them up, instill fear and hysteria, and have them be taught racist CRT and how to have sex with democrats before puberty.

Affluent families had a parent drop out of the workforce to homeschool, pooled money with other affluent parents to create "learning pods" and hire teachers, and did a bunch of other things to offset the school closures.

So a theoretical 4th grader has so many years of education and should be performing at such and such level, and if you're a 5th grader at that level you've lost a year. So 50% learning loss would seem to me to mean that they only got half-value of a normal learning year.

College enrollments are down across the board. Many have realized that college isn't right for them, but there's a bigger demographic issue in that there are fewer students *available* to go to college...The pool is shrinking. And of course, males are hit hardest because they suffer the most in K-12 schools. Hence the demographic shift to 60+% female in recent years (though STEM schools are still dominated by males, I think).

The best solution is to go to your parents' night or parent-teacher conference and let your child's teachers know that if you hear about any of that perverted shit from your kid (and make sure to mention that you look at their schoolwork and talk with them about what they discussed in class) that it's not gonna end up well for them, that you know where they live from a simple online records search.

If one serious parent does this in each class, you don't actually have to have all the parents bitching and complaining to the school board. These warriors look brave online, but you'd be surprised what shrinking violets they are face to face.

Then periodically throughout the year give them the "I'm watching you" two finger gesture-towards eyes gesture. You aren't required to like your kids' teachers or have them like you.

That's what many if not most homeschoolers have, especially in upper grades. My sister homeschooled her daughter, but she wasn't confident about teaching HS math and science. A local private school had a hybrid model that allowed homeschool students to attend classes for whatever they needed. They also provided a complete program of studies, so the homeschool work would always mesh with the in-school work.

BTW, my neice earned advanced placement and did great in college. She's an MBA now.

Oregon is around $15,000 per student per year. A good private HS school here costs about $6,000 per year and parents choose these options when they can afford them because they are better.

My daughter has home schooled for over a decade. The report card? Oldest two sons - excellent SAT scores and scholarships and early admittance to a very good college. Deans list level college grades before graduating.

She uses a hybrid model of in house, religious institution, experts in a subject willing to donate time as tutors, on-line instruction in topics where she is weak, and a strong support group.

It pisses me off to no end that the public schools in her area, that spend $25,000 a year per year, won't give her 10% of that. In the end, they scoop up her sons SAT scores and claim them for themselves.
