Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | New York Times Reporter: Studies Show That School Closings Seriously Harmed Children -- And Were Driven By Partisan Democrat PoliticsJohn Sexton digests the study of school closures in Michigan, comparing schools that closed and schools that stayed open, and schools in Republican dominated areas and schools in Democrat dominated areas. Because all schools closed for at least part of the two year period of the pandemic, all students saw some level of learning loss. But those who mostly had in-person schooling only saw a 20% learning loss in math, while those who mostly had "remote learning" saw 50% learning loss. And the remote learning took place in Democrat dominated areas.Though the New York Times doesn't dare spell it out this clearly, John Sexton helps them along: Democrats and their pet teacher's unions are responsible for making pandemic learning loss twice as bad as it had to be for millions of students.More than twice as bad -- 50% as compared to 20%. And of course Democrats, as they often (but not always) do, principally harmed their own voters. Which might be among the reasons black voters are finally beginning to abandon them. Democrats have lost 15 points of support from black voters. This is partly because blacks identifying themselves as "conservative" -- who have nevertheless traditionally voted Democrat -- are finally shifting to voting Republican. The piece wraps up by noting that in the past even conservative Black voters have tended to vote for Democrats but after 2020 there's some indication that could be changing. Hillary won self-described conservative Black voters by 58 points in 2016. But in 2020 Biden won them by 20 points. If that pattern continues the majority of Black voters will still side with Democrats but the margin may shift enough that Democratic advantages in some close races could evaporate. I think we can expect a lot of mildly critical (of the Dems) stories from the likes of the NYT and WaPo. They aren't doing it because they've seen the error of their ways, they're doing it because a) they're trying to recover some credibility, and more importantly, 2) they're trying to warn the Dems that their political future is very much in doubt. Thus, temporary retrenchment is called for, so as to once again lull the rubes, including their black and Hispanic voters.

In the previous thread, we discussed why all the reboots were "grimdark" now. It's not totally new. About 10 years ago a Man From U.N.C.L.E. fan wrote several stories in a serious crossover universe with U.N.C.L.E. and Escape From New York. Yes, Napoleon Solo -- working for an U.N.C.L.E. which in a fascist-leaning USA is fighting real dystopian evil -- teams up with Snake Plissken. I know my description sounds almost funny, but it was well done for fan fiction. Depressing as hell, though.

Usually I've seen this stuff measured in years. So a theoretical 4th grader has so many years of education and should be performing at such and such level, and if you're a 5th grader at that level you've lost a year. So 50% learning loss would seem to me to mean that they only got half-value of a normal learning year.

Lets say you're the inner city grandparents taking care of little LaQueesha and Shonderelle. You want them to do better than you did and their parents did, but you know that the schools are basically gangland and any kid who is academic is attacked for "being too white." You watched your little ones "attending class" with cameras and realized the teachers are not just idiots, but either will not, or cannot maintain a semblance of discipline.
That's when the idea sinks in that you can do this without needing any schools. And once that sets in, it doesn't go away. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 06, 2022 04:52 PM (KZzsI) 99

In Baltimore City, less than 7% of students tested in third- through fifth-grade math scored proficient. That means more than 93% are not proficient in math. The results for English language arts are just as alarming. The data shows 91% of students tested in third through fifth grade are not proficient. Bonhomme's dream fixes for education:
1. Put kids together by skill level, not age level. No, I'm not just talking about the slow, regular, and advanced classes. I mean the thirteen year old kids of "immigrants" who are reading at a second grade level should be together with second grade readers. 2. Empower the teachers to kick troublemakers out of class. If they get kicked out often enough, they're out of the school. Right now there's this stupid idea that kids have a "right" to an education. So the kids that get suspended for a week for pulling a knife on a 60 year old lady are back in class next week. Compounding that issue, Obama's initiative to track kids punishments by race and compare them is a DISASTER. White kids are getting kicked out of class for raising their voice while non-white kids are still in class after fighting. Why? Because the white kids are acting up at a lower rate, so if everyone gets punished for the same behavior, RACISM! The non-white kids have figured this out too, so they know they can do whatever the hell they want because the Principal doesn't want the hellfire to come down on them for punishing non-white kids "disproportionately." I don't ever want it 'fixed'. The present school system in the USA needs to die.
Like a lot of shit, a whole lot of shit, public schools were better when fifty different states did it their own way. On this one, thank Jimmy Carter. He elevated Education to a Cabinet level position. And de facto federalized it in the the process. Reagan ran on, amongst other things, demoting Education back to it's prior status. But he didn't do it. He didn't really even try. Posted by: Glowie is the new Troll is the new Conspiracy Theorist at May 06, 2022 05:01 PM (Y8GVo) 161

From my private college alma mater, today: Develop more robust education about diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are in the final stages of shaping the diversity, equity, and inclusion training to be included during the onboarding of all new staff and faculty, starting with the fall 2022 hiring season. These sessions will build awareness of bias, discrimination, microaggressions, cultural competencies, and communicating across differences. They will establish a baseline understanding and shared vision of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. I'm pretty sure that there is not a single Republican on the faculty. Says her students have gone backwards in the basic skills, reading, riting, rithmetic. Nearly all of them. And the attendance? About 15% lower than pre-Vid. Those kids? Just gone. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at May 06, 2022 04:58 PM (R/m4+) That would be nice, but it isn't gonna happen. The best solution is to go to your parents' night or parent-teacher conference and let your child's teachers know that if you hear about any of that perverted shit from your kid (and make sure to mention that you look at their schoolwork and talk with them about what they discussed in class) that it's not gonna end up well for them, that you know where they live from a simple online records search. If one serious parent does this in each class, you don't actually have to have all the parents bitching and complaining to the school board. These warriors look brave online, but you'd be surprised what shrinking violets they are face to face. Then periodically throughout the year give them the "I'm watching you" two finger gesture-towards eyes gesture. You aren't required to like your kids' teachers or have them like you. This experiment has never been tried on a well-armed populace. If they were smart, and they are not, they would do it now. That could easily have come from the university where I don't teach anymore but where I'm teaching this term cause I need the beer money. Ten years ago the college magazine had an article noting that the college had no Republican faculty, but had a handful of conservative Democrat faculty. Vouchers. Look, I'm all in on the idea that we need to provide basic education to our young. My state actually has that requirement in the state constitution. But that doesn't mean public school, necessarily. We're up to 10K per kid per year here. Give those parents a voucher - let them send 'em private if they wish. I think the hard part is for the person to accept it. We already have lots of gps trackers in lots of form factors. The problem is if they don't know why they have an ankle monitor on, or something similar, it may cause an enormous freakout. Can you imagine what that must be like? A local private school had a hybrid model that allowed homeschool students to attend classes for whatever they needed. My daughter has home schooled for over a decade. The report card? Oldest two sons - excellent SAT scores and scholarships and early admittance to a very good college. Deans list level college grades before graduating. She uses a hybrid model of in house, religious institution, experts in a subject willing to donate time as tutors, on-line instruction in topics where she is weak, and a strong support group. It pisses me off to no end that the public schools in her area, that spend $25,000 a year per year, won't give her 10% of that. In the end, they scoop up her sons SAT scores and claim them for themselves. Posted by: Divide by Zero at May 06, 2022 05:33 PM (dQvv7) 285
