Dow Down Over 1,200 Points as Investors Brace for Long Hard Slog Of Interest Rate Hikes to Tame Brandon's Inflationary Disaster

whipinflationnow.jpg

Yesterday, the Fed raised interest rates 0.5% to reduce inflation. The idea is to make it more dear to borrow money, which in turn will reduce the amount of money flowing out of central banks into the economy, which will then reduce the total amount of money in circulation, which will slightly offset the trillions of excess dollar bills Brandon has poured into the economy, and reduce the rate of increasingly inflation.

Not actually reduce inflation-- this isn't enough of an increase for that -- but slow the climb.

Hopefully.

The markets soared almost 1000 points less because investors believed this would stanch inflation than because 1, they expected Powell to do this, and the market always likes it when they guess right, because it means that they "understand" what's going on which makes them feel confident and makes them think they're smart, and 2, they thought that maybe Powell would be satisfied that he'd done enough and would not continue raising rates further.

But now they've had a day to think this over and they've realized "Boy, what stupid dicks we were to think that anyone, even Powell, would think that a half-a-point rise would be enough to clean up Brandon's inflation."

So now stocks are way down in anticipation of further rate hikes.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 932.27 points and the S&P 500 gained 2.99%, which were the largest gains for the two indices since 2000. Even the beaten-up Nasdaq Composite popped 3.19%.

It now appears that after a few hours of deep thought, traders have formed a more lasting near-term view that the Fed is far from dovish, has let inflation get out of control, and is still poised to dramatically slow down the economy through a series of 50 basis point rate increases.

"Inflation is still going to be a major problem throughout the rest of this year and beyond," Miller Tabak Chief Markets Strategist Matt Maley said.

Really? Do you think?

It's extremely worrying that people who are in positions of great financial power, and are supposedly very smart, thought that this 0.5% rate hike would be enough to take care of the highest inflation in forty years.

Our "elites" really are shit, aren't they?

Oh boy oh boy, we have to stop these dangerous "populists" and their dangerous ideas about not obeying the "elite wisdom" any longer...

...

Wall Street pros think the selling could continue in the short term on fears of a sharp, Fed-driven growth slowdown as it catches up on rate increases.

"It is much too soon in economic space for the Fed to allow financial conditions to ease very substantially on a sustained basis again, as this would work against the needed cooling of economic activity required to bring inflation under control," warned EvercoreISI strategist Krishna Guhu. "So if the broad easing on the day across the dollar, equities, rates, and credit continues to rip in the days or even weeks ahead, the Fed will likely have to find a way to rein it in."

So here's the reality: It's not going to be single 0.5% basis hike that does the trick. It's going to take a sustained series of 0.5% hikes, and maybe even a full 1.0% hike if inflation won't stop.

And this is going to go on for a year or two. A year or two of constantly tightening up the money supply and therefore tamping down economic activity.

This is going to be grueling. Grueling, miserable, sad, dispiriting, heartbreaking, immiserating, depressing, and, seemingly, never-ending.

And they're going to have to raise interest rates so high they're probably -- almost certainly -- going to crash the economy into deep recession.

And the inflation is such a threat that "deep recession" is now an acceptable alternative to very high inflation which would wipe out retirees' savings.

That's where Brandon has brought us. This moderate, sensible man vouched for by NeverTrump who would bring about a Return to Normalcy.

Via CNBC:

The Federal Reserve is expected to hike interest rates and cut its balance sheet aggressively over the next 16 months, according the May CNBC Fed Survey, and most respondents believe the process will end in a recession...

Respondents, who include economists, fund managers and strategists, see the funds rate hitting 2.25% by year end and rising to a terminal rate of 3.08% by August 2023...

The quick pace of tightening and the stubbornness of inflation leads a majority to believe the Fed will not achieve a soft landing. Asked if the effort to bring down inflation to 2% will create a recession, 57% said it would, 33% said it would be avoided and 10% didn’t know.

They predict the recession won't come until August 2023.... which is strange, because we just had a negative quarter in first quarter 2022 and it seems likely we'll have another in the second quarter.

We'll see what fresh horrors Brandon and his crack team of sociopathic narcissistic hyperincompetents have in store for us.

113 It's extremely worrying that people who are in positions of great financial power, and are supposedly very smart, thought that this 0.5% rate hike would be enough to take care of the highest inflation in forty years.

Our "elites" really are shit, aren't they?

++++
They are, but they are also leveraged up very, very hard and in debt up their eyeballs that they can't service. This is true at all levels, from the government to the corporate to the individual. As long as rates decline, you can just turn the crank again and refinance and continue along. If that stops being true, you get fucked and it happens quickly.

Our elites are shit, but a lot of them don't believe what they're spewing. They're spewing it because the HAVE to spew it. Their entire formative years (younger) or high-performance power years (older) have been in a declining interest rate environment. They don't know how to handle a rising rate environment, and rising rates will kill them. They're fucked and they know it.

Soft landing? It is to laugh. Depression will be required to get inflation under control. Anyone with any knowledge knew this would be case with the massive monetary expansion started during the '08 crisis to "save the system".

When Volcker did a Volcker, the federal govt had nowhere near the debt is has now. At one time, the federal funds rate went over 20%. I don't think T-bill rates ever got that high, but I know there are some long term notes issued then with a coupon of 17% or somewhere around that.

That would destroy the federal govt today.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 05, 2022 04:12 PM (Mzdiz)

125 And they're going to have to raise interest rates so high they're probably -- almost certainly -- going to crash the economy into deep recession.

And the inflation is such a threat that "deep recession" is now an acceptable alternative to very high inflation which would wipe out retirees' savings.

++++
And Powell is out talking about "soft landings." They know it's going to decline, they're just trying the old game of spinning it as "it'll be okay. We'll manage it." I don't think they can, and there will be few safe havens. You won't be able to hide out in bonds this time.

Two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth will no longer be termed a "recession" by the National Bureau of Economic Research while a Democrat occupies the White House, so there will be no recession this year.

This became clear when NBER declared a recession in March of the year before the 2008 election even though the economy grew in second and third quarters, which reveals a corollary that NBER will declare recessions even in the face of economic growth if a Republican occupies the White House.

That strikes me as optimistic (assuming you like low rates). There's a *lot* of money to pulled out of the system. The Fed shedding a bunch of its balance sheet - which needs to happen - will help, too, but they'll be losing money on every sale. They can't extract everything they put in, not even close. It will also push bond prices down and raise effective interest on new issues regardless of what they do to the funds rate.

173 On the Pfizer data drop, I had an interesting text conversation with a friend two days ago. She is pretty LIV and leans left. She knows I've been anti-vax the whole time.

Out of the blue she texts me about the data drop and focused on the rise in miscarriages. I told her I had known about it for awhile because hospitals were reporting triple the miscarriage rate.

Then she tells me she just had a miscarriage in February and felt guilty because she had gotten vaxxed last year and couldn't stop thinking that the vax caused it.

Told her to not feel guilty. She had been lied to.

Just a sample of 1, but pretty much the last person I expected to be paying attention to this.

Earlier. The "crush interest rates and shove money into the system like there's no tomorrow" started in earnest after the tech bubble imploded, and they deliberately stoked a ton of asset inflation in housing. When they started raising rates, the ARMs started to be at risk of blowing up which, combined with the vast overextension of credit in both housing and other areas, triggered the financial crisis and then they went all-in on manipulation. We have a 20 year fuckup to deal with.

You have libs in govt who think that public works programs in the 30's paying folks $.25 a day stopped the great depression, and gee...maybe that could work now as well. It would, but unlike in Volker's day the Fed has another option now. They spent a decade vastly expanding its balance sheet. This is how QE worked - they printed money and bought stuff with it, injecting it into the market. They can - and will have to - sell off a lot of that balance sheet. They'll lose money on every asset they sell, but every asset they sell will also pull that much money out of the system. It will also seriously fuck with bond prices.

So they don't have to do it with *just* interest rates, they do have another tool at their disposal and they will probably need to do both and hope they can contain the problem to the point that state finance doesn't fall to pieces. But there will be collateral damage.

254 102 Reagan and Volker. Somebody, somewhere, has to have written a report. The entire regime needs to study every move Volker made.

Posted by: Captain Josepha Sabin

The national debt is too high. They should have thought about that before they quadrupled the money supply, and held rates at zero to protect Zero.

Economic growth is the only answer now, as Trump showed, and the illegitimate regime we have now will literally burn this country down before they will allow that.
Posted by: Thomas Paine at May 05, 2022 04:10 PM (5kI0z)

Even if you had a Volcker right now, you'd need to have a Reagan that could take the political heat for the recession that he caused, and stay the course until it's done. Biden should have taken the punch bowl away on 20 Jan 2021. If he did, he'd be in halfway decent shape right around now. Too late now.

It might not. The government finances certainly wouldn't. But what that comes down to is the Fed. Does the Fed continue playing politics as they so often do - both then or now - or do they stop and defend the Dollar and the postwar global finance system?

My bet is on the latter, but it is very much an open question and guessing wrong will have severe consequences.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 05, 2022 04:26 PM (DU+/6)

258 We were all lied to. If these numbers are accurate and the Pfizer vaccine trial resulted in 2.6% of participants dying and then the government goes out and insists people get these shots and says that they're "completely safe and effective," that is an outrageous abuse of public trust.

I studied the Scottish data when it came out. In the summer of 2021 they got about half their population to take the clot shot. They also had 2500 extra deaths over the year before.

They weren't COVID deaths, and there was no other explanation for them besides the clot shot itself. Their population is around 5M, so if half of that got the clot shot that means 1% of the people that took it died.

Another point I've read. We've been in era of secularly declining interest rates for decades. Just look at the charts, goes up, peaks around the '80s, then starts to come down.

Many firms out there are structured based on that. They will not survive a reversal, of secularly increasing rates. They've piled up a bunch of debt, and their business model cannot support making the coupon on that debt with increasing rates.

314 nah, just remember that after the crash of 2008, the idiot adults got to be in charge and they had very wrong ideas. And we left them in charge. But why wouldn't we?

We (the gop) let:
1. teachers turn our kids into feral rioting gheybois
2. immigration run amok
3. the fed actively ruin the dollar

these, I would assume, would be key things the GOP would address...but no. the left , like rust, never sleeps. never loses a hill without dying over and over on it. We just spent 30 years giving up.

349 All these bourbons were cheap as hell in the aughts. Pappy wasn't even too bad a few decades ago. I don't know what it was but they sure did get good marketing.

It's all driven by scenesters and hipsters. Liquor goes through these trends. A decade or so ago, it was classic cocktails. So you'd see these 22-year-old assholes in fedoras drinking French 75s and whatnot. Now it's bourbon. Houston has at least three significant bourbon societies at this point, all driving up demand for whatever they decree the current thing to be beyond any reasonable possibility of supply so that they become allocated at liquor stores and practically available only on the secondary market at hyperinflated prices. I'd resent it less if these dumbshit whippersnappers cared about the product, but they have all the sophistication of "people say I need that bourbon with the horsey on the top." So now trying to find it is like traveling to Nigeria to buy yellowcake. Tulipmaniac assholes.

It was absolutely, mind-bendingly insane. The ecstatic money-printing in the aftermath of 2008 caused a shit ton of inflation, but it was largely contained in the capital and - sadly - housing markets. The Fed bought bonds from the banks and the banks chased returns elsewhere. The COVID printing was insanely huge, and they just dropped it out of helicopters.

389 I've been waiting on this inflationary spike ever since the beginning of QE. Even if Biden wasn't a senile old bastard being manipulated by Globalist Communists, this inflationary spike was baked into the cake. It had to happen. Simply had to.

We've printed money faster than our growth in providing goods and services. In a closed system, that would be enough to generate inflation. In an open system of fiat currency on a global scale, only international confidence in our currency as a safe haven could prevent inflation under these circumstances. Well, that's shot to shit now.

Our debt crossed the trillion mark under Reagan. It's went up like a bottle rocket, starting with the end of W's stupidity through Obama's reign of error. Trump kept on keeping on with the madness, and Biden said "hold my beer". Honestly, how could a massive drop in the value of the dollar have been avoided over two decades of printing currency like madmen as the national debt multiplied like tribbles ?

Anecdata; during the ice storms that we made it through several years ago, people around me ran out of food and started having serious issues with lack of heat about day four into a seven day power outage with no ability to get on the roads. These people all have nice $200K homes on one acre lots - but apparently, no idea of keeping two weeks of groceries on hand.

460 A few things. This market is going to drop further. Part of the rate hikes and the Fed QT is to cool off the market. They're trying to will next quarter into positive territory. It may happen. But it will be adjusted i to negative territory. Even Yellen admitted this is all the result of too much spending, which by the way Congress wants to do more of. $ 22 billion more for COVID schemes and $33 billion for Ukraine. You know because Congress is good like that. We will see a recession and it ain't gonna be in August 2023. Probably in the spring. Oh and by the way during this time the labor market gets worse, as does housing and consumer credit, most of which is linked to rate. People on the lower income end will once again take it in the ass. But Let's Go Brandon.

504 Small, but important, nitpick.

"Inflation" is what the politicians did to the money supply.

"Rising prices" are the inevitable response to inflation. Rising prices are not inflation.

The reason this matters is that there actually is a villain in this story, and that villain always seeks to escape culpability by blaming ordinary people who are forced to raise prices to offset the damage caused by the villain.

When we call rising prices "inflation" we are abetting the villain's escape. We should stop helping the very people who are hurting us by adopting their continuously misleading language.

Yep. Similar to how everyone blames "COVID" or "the Pandemic" for the bad economy. A bad flu virus did not cause anything. The politicians using that bad flu virus as justification to shut down the worldwide economy and enact tyrannical policies is what caused all the issues.

I think there's some truth to this. I drive all over Northern Arizona for work, and usually the gas pricess vary -- sometimes significantly -- among different areas.

When they all shot up a couple months ago, the price looked arbitrary and uniform everywhere -- and remained that way until just yesterday when they rose again. Almost as if an oligarchic collusion of price fixing at an arbitrary level (near round numbers): $4.49 for regular, $4.99 for premium
