Elon Musk: Say, Has Anyone Noticed That the Left Has Gotten Very Extreme The Past Few Years...?

At least, that's what he seems to mean by posting this web comic. Many redpilled liberals post this. They all mean "The left has gone crazy and savage."

Screenshot (2109).png

He also continued to pound Vijaya Gadde, posting this meme, which ridicules Gadde for constantly dismissing Tim Pool's examples of Twitter's leftwing bias, saying she'd need to see context and then, when he says that Twitter's idea of "context" is shaped by its leftwing bias, she claims she'd need to see an example of that.

And when he provides an example of that, she'll say she needs context, and...

Screenshot (2113).jpg

The cycle repeats forever. As it's supposed to. It's not supposed to arrive at any satisfactory answer; it's supposed to exhaust you. It's The Corporate Lawyer Runaround (TM).

I listened to that "debate" hoping there would be a debate. There wasn't one. Gadde just kept refusing to admit there was anything to be discussed by this endless cycle of claiming she couldn't answer the question without further information.

But it looks like Gadde is not long for Twitter World.

Here's a former Twitter executive shrieking that Gadde -- who has deplatformed many, many people, including the former President, essentially convicting them in a Court of One of being Insurrectionists or racists -- may not be herself criticized:

dick costolo

Replying to @elonmusk

what's going on? You're making an executive at the company you just bought the target of harassment and threats.

It continues to astonish me how blatant they are in asserting that there is an Aristocratic privilege that attaches to members of their classes that protects them from the slanders of the ruffians, but that this privileges works in one direction only. There is just no other possible way to explain this, how Taylor Lorenz may dox LibsofTikTok but that Tucker Carlson is forbidden to even mention Lorenz's name negatively on his show, etc.

They never explain the rules of who gets this privilege and who doesn't because if they dared explain the rules, you'd punch them in their fucking faces for a start.

It's a simple assertion of class privilege. They have it, you don't.

In more news from Space Daddy:

Dave Rubin
@RubinReport
·

Hey @elonmusk, as long as your digging, check into how @nytimes, @forbes, etc., bought their Twitter followers to fake influence.

NY Times has 53 million “followers” and rarely gets 50 RT’s.

I could post a 🍌 emoji and a pic of a 80’s sitcom star and get more. (See next tweet.)

Elon Musk
@elonmusk
Replying to
@RubinReport

Yeah, I noticed that too. Pretty weird.

Musk hates bots, so people who bought bots to inflate their follower counts could be in for some embarrassment in the months to come.

As Tim Pool said, sagely: "Musk didn't just buy the company, he bought the evidence."

Yes, that is what has got to be freaking these people out the most. An awful lot of claims were made before Congress about not shadowbanning people, throttling accounts, etc.

That lie is about to be exposed.

And it's not like Twitter is the only one who lied about this. They all did it. Their employees migrated from company to company and shared tricks.

They all lied, and all their executives perjured themselves.

And I like this idea:

Jan Jekielek
@JanJekielek

@elonmusk, an idea: As Poland emerged out of communism, the @ipngovpl_eng [Institute of National Remembrance] did something incredibly powerful to facilitate societal healing: it made everyone's "dossier" (created by the security state) available to them. Logs/settings would be the equivalent here. How about it?

Elon Musk
@elonmusk
The extreme antibody reaction from those who fear free speech says it all

...

By “free speech”, I simply mean that which matches the law.

I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law.

If people want less free speech, they will ask government to pass laws to that effect.

Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people.

People are overstating how "free speech absolutist" Musk is. He's said his idea of a good goal to reach for is one in which 10% of the most extreme left and 10% of the most extreme right are equally unhappy.

That's not absolutism. That's just moderation with balance.

Meanwhile: What man talks like this?

"My Tummy-Meter says this isn't good."

And here's Musk beating on Bill Gates for being both 1, Fat, and 2, Dumb.

Or at least for being kind of ignorant about many things.

billgatespregnant.jpg

I think Bill Gates really needs to stop being treated as a smart guy.

He never produced great code.

All this asshole did is sign a great contract -- for him. And then he bought a very jenky program from another guy.

He wasn't even smart for signing that contract. IBM was just stupid.

That's all true, but it might end up being secondary. The Big Tech executives openly lie to Congress about everything. Providing stone-cold proof that they lied might move the needle, but I doubt it moves it much.

The much bigger problem is going to be bots. Everyone knows there's a bot problem, but nobody knows how to quantify it. Quantifying it will allow the false influence to be measured, but it will have another effect: money. If Twitter deals with the bot problem and the active user count shrinks, that means a shit ton fewer ad impressions.

And if Twitter quantifies the bot problem, it *will* becomes the baseline assumption for Facebook and other networks, including AdSense. Bots piss off advertisers, but there's no quantified proof and no other option. If Musk exposes the scale of the bot problem, it is going to have profound negative implications for the ad networks and Big Tech revenues.

81 I think Bill Gates really needs to stop being treated as a smart guy.

He never produced great code.

Gates himself said he learned to code by fishing other people's code out of the garbage and looking at it. I can't personally vouch for how good or bad his code is, but I've heard it wasn't great.

That said, he was enough of a tech guy that he could call bullshit when someone was trying to snow him or when he was evaluating an idea. I've also heard he had incredible recall. Normal developers brain dump code six months to a year out. If you ask them to look at code they haven't reviewed for a few months, they have to dig in and remind themselves how it all works. I've heard Gates didn't have to do that. He remembered all the code he'd written or reviewed.

And non-woke and conservatives gaining followers is all based only on people logging back into twitter or joining for the first time. And totally not at all possible that they have disabled some of their shadowbanning/throttling controls.

There are three good potential explanations for this:
1. They're backing down on the controls and cracking down on bots because they have to as a condition of the sale, and it is exposing its scale.
2. They are still fucking with things to create noise and make the sale harder, they're just playing Calvinball now
3. None of the follower counts or tweet counts were real in the first place but they've turned the real counters back on (relates to point #1)

Advantage WI. State law that if the register price is higher than shelf tag price the customer must get the item at the shelf tag price at minimum (though I've never seen anyone do more than that tag price).

I think MI even had a law where the customers got to collect a bounty of some amount from retailers for items whose shelf tag wasn't correct.

Forget Twitter. They're a side show. There are comparatively few ads on Twitter in the first place. The extended question is how long have *all* the online advertising firms - including the juggernauts of AdSense and Facebook - been defrauding customers of their ad dollars, and by extension defrauding their investors? How much did they know and how big is the problem?

If they knew little and the problem is 5%, they'll be okay. If they knew a lot and the problem is 25%, they're fucked. Even if you can't prove how much they knew, advertisers *will* start demanding significant discounts under the presumption that the other networks, like Twitter, have a serious bot problem.

Free speech aside, maintaining opacity in user counts and engagement and bot volume might be a co-primary goal of the outright war on Twitter that ramped up with amazing speed. I even expected it and but damn was it fast.

Rep. xxx,

The Disinformation Governance Board (DGB) must be stopped at any costs. It is an abomination to the notions of liberty, freedom, and most certainly will be used to obliterate the First Amendment. Government rarely steps back, maybe never, and I fully expect that in short order the DGB will have morphed into something resembling the NKVD, the Stasi, or the Gestapo. It is then when the fun will really begin. If you wish to leave a legacy that endures it will be being part of the vanguard that aborted this evil before it could ever live.

Not necessarily. As Paul Gottfried like to point out, it has become less purely rightwing on economics, but much more so on social issues. That is where the battle is being fought.

After all, we did win a partial victory on economics. We didn't get all we want, but true socialists are rarer, and as the Democrats showed in 2016, even they won't put up with one.

I'm sure. Whether it works or not, however, is beside the point. People buy those ads, and those ads are the source of Big Tech revenue. Money from direct services (cloud services, business-class app hosting, etc.) is also a huge sum of money, but advertising made Google and Facebook the cash cows that they are.

174 I'm an old-time retired computer guy, and and with regard to Bill Gates I have to give the devil his due. Gary Kildall did something really stupid (blowing off a meeting with IBM when they wanted to license CP/M), IBM mentioned it to Gates, and Gates realized something that IBM did not - that what mattered was the operating system, not the hardware. Once the IBM PC BIOS was cloned (and I've heard rumors of skulduggery involved in that), the hardware became a commodity and the OS ruled the roost. Granted, MS-DOS was/is a piece of crap, but that didn't matter: with hardware manufacturers locked into "per unit" contracts, Gates was on his way to his billions.

However, I thought Steve Jobs summed up Gates nicely when he said, "He [Gates] has no taste." Jobs' design sense, which *made* Apple, is utterly lacking in Gates. His is a pedestrian mind. And this dullard wants to remake the world in his image. God, what a fall for humanity!

Losing control of Twitrage can be viewed as a religious desecration to that theology. I am expecting a crusade to reclaim that space to begin soon and may already have begun with the Disinformation Governance Board.

Well the question of viscosity aside, most societies had raiders that functioned as part of their military. The Normans were hated in England in particular because William disbanded his army into England (where they turned bandit). I think there's probably some natural sympathy to being a raider, as well as sympathy towards those being raided.

I recall Xerox PARC pleaded with Xerox HQ for funding to develop a full fledged OS. Xerox didn't see a future and doubled down on the large format print business. Jobs was friends/colleagues with the head of PARC and parlayed that into a demo, including 'borrowing' the original input 'mouse'. Woz engineered the original MacOS based on what was gleaned from the demo - at least that's what I remember. YMMV.

Xerox hardly had the first mouse. They did have the first workable, fully-fledged GUI including some serious human factors research, though.

PARC is a fascinating thing. Xerox acknowledged that they were too staid and uncreative to really pursue the future, and that they would get their lunch eaten. They started PARC and put it far away from the HQ to go invent the future. PARC did exactly that, and the only major thing the home office could grok was the laser printer. But PARC invented workable graphical interfaces, the laser printer, ethernet networking, contributed hugely to computer-controlled telephony, the list goes on. And most of it was stolen or given away because PARC was a think tank that didn't have any business sense and the officers back at Xerox were incapable of understanding what they had.

Eh. The Lisa was already using a bitmapped screen instead of a character generator screen. Some Apple engineers had worked at PARC or worked for Engelbart, the inventor of the mouse. They were already doing a lot of similar things before the first PARC visit.

Apple and Microsoft didn't steal any code, the ideas were already floating around, and actually commercializing an invention is not a simple task.

Xerox PARC was an amazing place for invention, but Xerox executives were wooden headed morons who weren't interested in anything that wasn't copy machines or copy machine supplies.

It's a fun talking point, and the subject of endless debate, but the idea that Apple engineers were lost little lambs that didn't know anything about the mouse or any sort of GUI before Jobs wrangled his way into a PARC visit is a myth.

295 OT, but some amazing results from yesterdays Federalist/Susquehana poll.

It found an amazing 75% of likely voters expect a recession to be officially declared before election day comes. Things have gone so far south for Biden that over half of people describing themselves as "progressive liberals" (56%) say the Biden Junta is a disaster for the economy.

The only problem I see is Federalist didn't ask "do you think McConnell and Luntz-McCarthy will lift even e little finger to help America?", because that answer would result in equally bad numbers.

I believe there is a story where Jobs or his team asked the PARC people if they could have a mouse that they developed to take with them during a visit and the idiots nerds there, being so prideful, actually gave them one. It was fully functional to drive the GUI, very similar to the mouse ability to drive present day GUIs. And the MS team just reversed engineered it afterwards and commercialized it.

308 Windows was stolen from Xerox. Apple also stole it.

That's not exactly right. Apple stole the concept of the GUI; there's significant originality in how it looks and operates. If you've ever seen a video of or used an actual Xerox Alto or Star, the UI is very alien to what was on the Lisa, Mac, and Windows (which is still largely how the Mac and Windows look and work now).

Windows, OTOH, was a copy of Apple's stuff. Microsoft got early prototypes of the Mac to make software for it, and Gates by all accounts went apeshit when he saw it.

Doug Englebart was a true visionary. He was also apparently crazy as a loon and had been more or less dismissed by everybody until he crawled into his skunk works (at Stanford, IIRC) and invented the future. The ideas he showed off became things that others dedicated themselves to creating for real. Real-time shared collaboration. Hyperlinks. Multi-tasking. Data reference across files and file types. Automatic updating. Video conferencing. The world would not look like it does today without Englebart.

He was one of the people who's ideas galvanized legions of people and made them want to go make those ideas real. Vannevar Bush was another, with his seminal 1945 essay "As We May Think" directly influencing a lot of those same people.

And frankly, Elon Musk is not exactly the white knight of Free Speech. His ownership of Twitter may make some changes and there may be some big reveals, but he has a lot of shall we say.....crazy ideas?
I think the most positive thing I can say is that he will stir things up, and maybe, by random chance, some things might get better.

I hate those things. I procrastinate and then do some quickie write up. I never consider it part of "my work goals" Its just crap that is imposed on us because of a high CYA factor in case they need to dump someone whose doesn't get shit done as the rules require a HUGE paper trail of showing requests the slacker didn't comply with. But the clever managers have taken to 2 year terms for new hires so they can just not renew the term appointment for folks that just don't produce. I don't think they get much 'work honestly for 2 years and then become a slacker' gaming of the system. Slackers gonna slack sooner that that.

But some folks seem to relish listing every task they did like it was an accomplishment rather than just what we get paid to do.

392 the thing that I think is terrifying them at Twitter is the fact that all the tools they use to shadowban/throttle users are in the code and in config tables ... they simply can't delete the tables (it would crash the system) ... they can truncate some of the data for sure ... but a good reverse engineer can easily see just what they built and how it would be used ... and they can't just deploy new code ... not without getting caught right away ... guaranteed there are copies of the code at each stage of its development ...
and Musk is no fool as it relates to source code ... he has to know it shows what was done and when ... (maybe not why ... those emails are sleeping with the fishes is my bet unless a sys admin was smart enough to hide some backups)

I think that is a very true statement. Once you start to pull on a few of the strings, the whole thing may just come unraveled. I wouldn't be surprised if some disgruntled guy at Twitter crashes the whole thing on the way out the door.

Amigas dominated the niche in early multimedia computer graphics including at broadcast stations with its multitasking and specific chips for each. IBM clones and apples generally sucked at that application. OS/2 was actually the better operating system for bidness than XT or Unix ports at that time. That is the normal progression but we are increasingly in uncharted waters. The Estates General was originally only met under Louis XVI to raise taxes for the bankrupt state. The 1930 election losses in Congress during Hoover's time set the stage for 1932.

The US Constitutional Convention originally only met to fix the Articles of Confederation after the Annapolis meeting indicated agreement among states that it was needed.

It is ludacris, generally speaking, to claim that 100% of MSFT's success was only due to theft, and dumb luck. Nothing could be more wrong, they worked like dogs and competed like lions to build the company. And the net result of it all? They were a key player in changing the course of history. How many trillions of dollars of wealth has Microsoft created when you consider the impact on how corporations are run, the vast eco systems that is computer hardware, our daily lives? This list goes on endlessly and it is staggering. Dumb crooks could never have done that. No doubt, they built some buggy software, name me one company that hasn't. Often they were second with a product, so what? Is there a rule that says you can't build competing products? You may not like big tech and its personalities but ignoring the brilliance and energy that built the modern computing universe is purposeless. With that said, I am all in on nuking Big Tech for using it position to undermine our Constitution. It can't happen fast enough. As for the current Bill Gates: Moobs. That's all I got.

555 I don't see how the Commodore Amiga's Motorolla 68000 had anything architecture-wise in common with Atari's MOS 65xx. 68000 series was also used in the Mac until powerpc. It was used in a lot of stuff. It's probably closer to 8080 than 65xx but still nothing like that either. Posted by: banana Dream
----------------
It didn't. The 68000 was a fairly advanced chip for its time and the Amiga combining it with specialty dsp processors for sound etc. put it ahead of its competitors at the time. What Amiga did not have was a corp of software developers. Motorola was also distracted from its chip business with the ensuing move to cellular phones. Not great followups to the 68000 and Intel which was focusing primarily on chip making eventually overcame it with help from Microsoft and the pc clone industry. Jack of all trades beat specialty even if the Wintels were inferior in a lot of ways to its competitors and that was due to software and hardware extensions.

So here's the thing with meatballs. I never got it with beef. With pork, I get it. It's like extra-delicious little sausages in there.

But with beef, you can buy a cheap cut of meat that's still better than hamburger, like skirt-steak, and just serve it with pasta and a nice vegetable sauce like puttanesca. For very cheap. Unless you boil down bottles of wine and sticks of butter to make it. Which I do. And it's still pretty cheap.

What am I missing? Why meatballs? They're difficult to make and crappy steak is better anyway.

oh no, Musk would have to build his own servers. And then become a successful amazon competitor.

Might get sued by tweeter for collusion. Who knows. I can see Google and apple ginning up some bs to keep Musk off there platforms.

This battle Royale is gonna be lit.

I cannot consume something referred to as "nut-milk". If I had someone when I was younger come up to me and ask, "Hey you want some nut-milk?" I would have hit them because they probably were a friend giving me crap and that's what you expect. It would have ruined the whole joke if I didn't hit him. That's how it works. nut-milk

I can't believe I live in a world where those two words are put together on a box and people buy it and drink it. I understand people are allergic to or their digestive system can't handle milk. But they should have come up with a better name. Testicle-dairy? Scrotum-juice? Ball-batter?

You and I and Dave in FL agree - forget the US Congress - it's a hopeless corrupt group right now and the national party organizations are cheating as much as they can to get people in who will make grifting dough off tax payers.

But the state and county run governments to not get this national party attention and dollars, and all signs point to a complete conservative shelling of progressives in even blue states. And that, my friends, is the beginning of the end...because if there is anything Ron DeSantis has taught us the last couple of years, you can't beat state ran governments with Fed ran bullshit if that state has real backbone.

589 537 I don't get all the anti Bill Gates sentiment here during the period he was running Microsoft.

Posted by: Lost in Space
-------------------
Billy became a monopolist in the 90's and ironically it took him being sued for antitrust and the rise of the web (which btw Microsoft hindered rather than helped) to make them more harmless to the consumer. Development wise, their products were largely crap compared to specific products from competitors but since Microsoft sold them in a package deal of take it or leave it, most end user development software companies kept Microsoft happy because a lot of undocumented extensions gave favored developers an advantage. Ironically, what gave Microsoft its start was IBM's decade long antitrust battle with FedGov and IBM felt it could not develop in house. Even at the time, it was chance that the superior DR DOS was not chosen.

Apple was always a closed garden so if you liked its approach, then you were bound to it.

I run mostly linux now with a windows computer or two for running a couple of applications plus a Mac notebook.

Q; Why should Twitter not be completely free?
A: Because people will use their freedom of speech to express hatred.

Right?

So this exchange is:

1. Show me an example of people hating Clarence Thomas.
2. They are expressing the freedom of speech.

So it can't be hate?

All this asshole did is sign a great contract -- for him. And then he bought a very jenky program from another guy.

I've read that the first 38 steps of Gates' DOS at bootup exactly replicated CPM (which was the better OS), but 'intellectual property' laws back then were pretty lame.

But this is life. Sometimes losers and thieves win.

595 Bill Gates didnt buy code. He stole CPM. It was a better code. It was 32 bit before it was needed (Bill Gates once famously said that there was no reason for more than 16 bit OS). The CPM guy eventually killed himself.

596 This freak show is about the Left losing their ace in the hole to not getting creamed in the upcoming midterms. Twitter was immensely helpful in 2020 and they were counting on the same in 2022. That's why they have never backed down on their unpopular policies: they had their cheat sheet all ready just like last time, except Musk ruined the party. They will never forgive him or forget this. Interesting times ahead.

598 Hoo boy, lots of myth going on here. I was around back then. I wrote code for CP/M, including assembler. I wrote code for MSDOS.
1. Bill Gates wasn't/isn't stupid. Harvard geeks aren't stupid. Except maybe from Musk's perspective.
2. The Musk emoji tweet didn't say anything about IQ, did it?
3. Gates wrote at least half of the first Basic interpreter for a microcomputer. He contracted its math subsystem out. His partner Paul Allen wrote an Intel 8080 emulator to test it. The interpreter was limited (no text manipulation) so it could run in 4 KB of memory. Gates's code was first class - correct and tight. And he wrote it fast. I'm guessing he wrote about 1000 to 2000 lines of assembler code.
4. The story of the IBM/Digital Research negotiation is complicated. Look up Gary Kildall in Wikipedia.
5. If "the CPM guy" referred to is Gary Kildall, he didn't kill himself. Ibid.
6. Gates didn't steal CP/M. Ibid.

Republicans have moved further to the right than Democrats have to the left

600 Republicans and Democrats are now further apart ideologically than at any point in more than two decades.
A deep dive into Americans’ attitudes across individual political values and policy issues with data dating back to the late 1990s or early 2000s. In nearly every domain, across most of the roughly two dozen values questions tracked, views of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents and those of Democrats and Democratic leaners are now further apart than in the past.
It is not just Republicans getting more conservative and Democrats more liberal. In some cases, the gap has grown because the parties have moved in different directions, with growing shares of Democrats taking liberal positions and increasing shares of Republicans taking conservative positions. But in other areas, shifts are greater among one set of partisans than another generally as the country shifted more liberal.
