Right off the back in this debate, she's defending the censorship of Dr. Sean Baker for pushing the carnivore diet. Soon thereafter, she and Jack both claim that there will be no censorship of people suggesting that vaccines are unsafe, that that's not against the rules. Yes, that would change in a few years, huh? Essentially, she's been pushing the line that anything the left claims "causes harm" must be censored and that the idea that all this censorship causes harm to free speech just isn't a consideration we should worry about. So you now have the background for why I'm laughing about Vijaya Gadde crying like a Goth girl in a Cure video.This is how they end free speech: They claim that "free speech" can only really happen when they exclude the people who are arguing with women and minorities and especially trans people. Disagreement with protected "marginalized" people is definitionally "hate speech:" if you're not affirming them, it's "hate." When you argue with these people, they feel chilled from expressing their opinions, and do not offer them. So you have to censor men, especially white men, and straight people. Then the "marginalized" people can speak freely. Then you have "free speech." For... some people. But they're the people who matter.
Monday was an emotional day at Twitter -- even for its executives. Shortly after billionaire Elon Musk bought the powerful social media platform, top Twitter lawyer Vijaya Gadde called a virtual meeting with the policy and legal teams she oversees to discuss what the new ownership could mean for them. Gadde cried during the meeting as she expressed concerns about how the company could change, according to three people familiar with the meeting. She acknowledged that there are significant uncertainties about what the company will look like under Musk's leadership. Twitter spokesperson Trenton Kennedy said Gadde became emotional when discussing her team's impact and the pride she feels in them. ...
Gadde, who has worked at Twitter since 2011, is the key executive charged with overseeing Twitter's trust and safety, legal and public policy functions. She is seen internally as Twitter's "moral authority" and the executive tasked with handling sensitive issues like harassment and dangerous speech. ... She has shepherded Twitter through some of its most contentious political battles, including the decisions to remove all political advertising and to boot former President Donald Trump from the platform in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol Hill -- a position that has earned her devoted fans within Twitter, as well as a large contingent of right-wing critics.
But as news of Musk's official takeover broke, policy and legal employees fretted at the meeting about what his leadership could mean for Twitter's carefully crafted online speech rules, including its policies against hate speech, misinformation and even political advertising.
... Gadde herself has advocated strongly for ensuring that Twitter's policies protect its most vulnerable users while protecting free expression -- a position that is at odds with Musk's. "I'm often inspired by the vigorous debates on controversial issues that occur on Twitter, but I've also been seriously troubled by the plight of some of our users who are completely overwhelmed by those who are trying to silence healthy discourse in the name of free expression," Gadde wrote in a 2015 Washington Post op-ed. "At times, this takes the form of hateful speech in tweets directed at women or minority groups; at others, it takes the form of threats aimed to intimidate those who take a stand on issues."
Gadde holds one of the most controversial positions at Twitter: Her teams decide how to moderate content. That's made her a target of right-wing criticism, particularly when Twitter blocked the distribution of a New York Post article about President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, in 2020. She faced a renewed wave of criticism after multiple reports confirmed she was behind the decision to ban Trump from Twitter. "No matter what we do we've been accused of bias," she told Bloomberg News in 2020. "Leaving content up, taking content down -- that's become pretty much background noise.""I don't listen to my critics at all. It's just waah, waah, waah to me."

The requirement that any adult (parent or otherwise) who wants to volunteer to help in any event has to get fingerprinted and go through annual 4 hours of training...this is even if your kid's religous ed wants to throw a party and you need parent helpers to participate. You can't drop kids at an event unless there are 2 certified Virtus trained volunteers there, and you pretty much have to be with your kid for everything b/c it's the only way anything happens (b/c that's the one exception in the rules - if parents are watching their own kid, it's cool). This requirement is for kids up through age 17, so teen events and volunteering opportunities fell off a cliff...

On the one hand, sounds like a money grab. On the other hand, fingerprinting and background checking people who are going to be in prolonged contact with kids doesn't seem unreasonable, although from your description it may have gone too far. However, when you have sex abuse scandals like the Catholic Church going public then there's a good possibility for draconian measures to be taken for both risk management and PR purposes.

I'll be da&ned if I accuse the free help of being a criminal and making them sit through "I'm an idiot" training for 4 hours every year BEFORE they can even actually volunteer to help. When I used to run events, I learned you don't put extra burdens on volunteers, you put praise...but lawyers don't think that way...

The millionaire can buy a private experience at most all theme parks. You get a behind the scenes tour/tour guide/cuts and get to see things general admission tickets don't. Look at the website for San Diego zoo and search for private experience or something.

Effectively what the US is getting is a majority of economic migrants especially at the top end instead of those wanting to come here for an open society based on liberty and merit. They end up recreating their societies back home as a result and modern communication today makes it even easier to never assimilate in values or history. It is also a reason that 2nd and 3rd generation often have issues where previously assimilation would start to take hold.

That was ours, too. When my kid wouldn't leave his 1st kindergarten CCD class b/c he thought he couldn't come back (and he had so much fun), he's crying on the floor holding a table. I took the Virtus lady aside and said I'm going in and helping the teacher, and I talked my kid out. I pretty much dared her to get me in trouble (and since I saved the teacher...well, it passed).
And yes, I have told this to my Church - the solution was sunshine and we put in more darkness and shadow. I refuse to be part of that "solution" and I work against it EVERY chance I get.

Part of the reason is that there are things Americans don't want to study, especially at an advanced level. E.g., engineering, math, and hard sciences.
My PhD graduation ceremony, almost all THE non-biology STEM folks were furriners. Liberal arts and social science - furriners were rare.

But decently paid for the actual job in the actual location, or just decently paid as an American.
Most companies farm out the work on H1-Bs b/c they want the benefits of being under US law with US security while not having to pay for US workers...that's gotta stop.
H1-Bs should be required to make 25% more than the average worker in the field in the particular locale. If they are that needed and precious, they should be paid accordingly.

If you're any good at all, you'll do fine. Most of the H1Bs I've worked with have to be hammered over the head for YEARS to understand they need to report back when they're stuck, that they need to report back when they're done, disappearing without notice isn't acceptable, and when you ask them to do something, using a strictly literal interpretation of that instruction to do the minimum amount possible isn't acceptable.

I watched a lot of friends in IT have the rug pulled out from under them after the early 2000s, and I assume it was tied to that. Built the world we're living in, making six figures because they were good at what they did, and then boom, you're no longer needed, we can hire Pagwag Pateshi for $40K to mostly keep things running.

Well paid for the position and location. By law, H1-Bs are not supposed to be paid less than a similar American. (Not that there aren't ways to skirt the laws. I have a couple of H1-B folks on my team. They are paid well.
I'm not saying there are no scummy situations, but for companies that actually need the non-American labor (usually from people who attended a US university or one in the West), I believe it's usually different.

What has happened to k-12 US education is one culprit. Welfare benefits are another along with the collapse of the nuclear family. Stagnation in wages due to government overspending chronically make things worse.
Secondary consequences are the need to import workers to do the jobs that a) people on welfare do not want to do and b) import the workers that our educational system is not able to supply. Those secondary consequences make the collapse in education even worse over time and swell the welfare burden simultaneously. Other labor restrictions can make matters of labor market inefficiency worse along with increasing societal friction internally.
Each individual sees the problem from their individual perspective but what is needed is a systems approach to the problem which generally means everyone's ox is going to get gored and a lot of sacred cows get sacrificed.
