The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"He will have no contact with other lawyers or personnel at the firm on substantive matters relating to the Summit during the period that he is special envoy," Wendy Morigi

*

Quote II

“Some of them had left CNN to go to streaming. Some of them had left other places, moved across the country. And so, I think you’re seeing a lot of the anchors at CNN+ doing everything they can to protect the people that were working on their team and to make sure they either get a safe landing at CNN or someplace else,”Chris Wallace.

Quote III

Lady Drops Her Phone in an Outhouse, Tries to Retrieve It and Falls in — Says the Fire Department

Sometimes, your day goes to crap. Such a description seems apt for a woodsy woman who recently had to dial 911.

The lady and her dog had gone for a hike in northwest Washington’s Olympic National Forest. At some point, she sensed nature’s call.

Surprising statistics? I don't think so.

Virtual meeting study: 50% of participants arrive late, 22% don’t say anything

The rise of video conferencing has opened up new ways to analyze the effectiveness of meetings.

Seattle startup Read just released its first study after measuring more than 3 million virtual meeting minutes since launching in September, when it announced its $10 million seed round. The company’s software measures engagement and sentiment of participants on video meetings.

For meetings with seven or more people, some of the findings include:

50% of participants arrive late
40% have below average or poor engagement
22% of participants don’t say a single word
11% don’t have video or audio on

No mention of the Jeffrey Toobins of the world jacking off.

New Contact Sport Promises the Most Exciting Part of Hockey Minus the Hockey

If you’re of the opinion that fights are the most exciting part of ice hockey, you’re probably going to love Ice Wars, a new combat sports league that pits ice hockey enforcers against each other.

Take away the sticks, the puck and the nets, and you’re left with hockey players with nothing better to do than beat each other to a pulp for the entertainment of paying spectators. That’s essentially the idea behind Ice Wars, a soon-to-debut combat sports league featuring ice hockey enforcers fighting for money. A match will consist of two, one-minute rounds with a 30-second “ice breaker” round in the event that the fighters each win one round

Surprise: Ex-general pushing for NATO troops in Ukraine has weapons industry ties
Ret. US Gen. Philip Breedlove wants to escalate the military conflict with Russia but media outlets don’t disclose he works for defense firms.

Weapons companies and military contractors stand to book new orders and enjoy heightened demand for new weapons systems, as the United States and NATO countries scale up spending in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Coincidentally or not, one of the most high-profile advocates for dramatically escalating NATO’s involvement in the war — literally calling for putting troops and arms inside Ukraine — quietly moonlights as a consultant for weapons firms and defense contractors, interests that presumably stand to benefit from a direct conflict between NATO and Russia.

More importantly, that conflict of interest hasn’t been disclosed in any of his media appearances or interviews.

On Sunday, retired U.S. general and former top NATO commander Gen. Philip Breedlove told The Times of London:

The US Chair Force Air Force has been taken over by the absurd. The Air Force is trusting the internet to name its ridiculous new cybersecurity mascot

Cybersecurity. It’s important stuff. There’s a lot of critical data out there that you don’t want bad actors snooping on.

That is why the Air Force apparently needs a cybersecurity mascot. A caped robot with a shield and lightning bolt adorned helmet, here to ask you if you’ve tried turning your computer off and on again and presumably solving the myriad of technical issues that come with the territory when you’re using decades-old software.

Everything. And I mean everything is Racist.

We literally don’t even know where to start with this latest insane story from the wonderful world of academia, this time from Seattle Pacific University. In fact, insane may be a vast understatement.

In a total and complete waste of student tuition funds, a study was conducted that sought an answer to the age-old question—are whiteboards racist? Seriously.

The investigation, “Observing Whiteness in Introductory Physics: A Case Study” was published in March in Physical Review Physics Education Research (PRPER). In that study, three students were observed where they attempted to solve a physics problem and analyzed how “whiteness” is present in academia, Campus Reform reports.

On Sunday's ONT we covered the GM Spark EV where GM was making the battery replacement obsolete. Will we see the same thing with their EV Corvette?

It’s official: A Chevrolet Corvette EV is coming. Even better, an electrified Corvette is coming as soon as next year.

GM President Mark Reuss made the announcement this morning in a post on LinkedIn. He included a clip that shows an all-wheel-drive system on Corvette for the first time.

“Some time ago, we moved the Corvette team into the EV space in Warren, Michigan, and when we revealed the new mid-engine Corvette, I said there would be ‘more to come,'” Reuss said before answering “the question I’ve been asked countless times.”

It appears that lithium batteries will cost more in the near future. Mexico nationalizes lithium industry.

A newly passed mining reform recognizes lithium as a national heritage and grants the state the exclusive right to explore, exploit and use the valuable metal

Mexico has officially nationalized its lithium industry. On April 21, the bill, proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), that modified the mining law to give the state the exclusive right to explore, exploit and use the valuable metal entered into force. According to the law, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, the executive or the president now has 90 days to create a decentralized state company that will deal with all lithium-related matters.

The reform was approved in a record time in both houses of the Congress. President AMLO presented it in the Chamber of Deputies on April 18. The same day, the lower house discussed the reform, voted on it and passed it with 275 votes in favor, 24 against and 187 abstentions. The next day, on April 19, the Senate also debated the reform and sanctioned it with 87 votes in favor, 20 against and 16 abstentions.

Reason #2,039 to laugh at Jen Psaki and her Mush Brain employer.

Alina Kabaeva, a famed Russian gymnast turned apparent romantic partner of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is a potential target for sanctions, the Biden administration said, after questions were raised this week about the lack of penalties against her.

“No one is safe from our sanctions,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday, after the Wall Street Journal reported that the United States had made an “11th-hour decision” to remove Kabaeva from a set of new sanctions.

“There’s more we will likely do,” Psaki said.

Since Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, the United States has sanctioned Putin, his associates and even two of his daughters. President Biden also said last month — before the White House backtracked on his remark — that Putin “cannot remain in power.”

But Kabaeva is considered so close to Putin, the Journal reported, that sanctions against her could risk further disrupting relations between Washington and Moscow. Global leaders are pushing for Russia to commit to meaningful peace talks, and Russia’s ambassador in Washington, Anatoly Antonov, said this week that the Kremlin wants to “stabilize” and “develop”

The phrase "This beer tastes like piss". Well thank our Genius Award Winner.

Faced with a locked bathroom at a convenience store, a Florida Man decided to instead relieve himself inside the business’s beer cave, ruining $113.36 in merchandise, police report.

According to an arrest report, Clarence Patterson, 61, entered the Hop & Pop store Saturday afternoon and proceeded to the restroom, which was locked. Patterson “then entered the ‘beer cave’ making the appearance he was looking at the merchandise inside.”

Patterson, who lives about two miles from the store in Rockledge, a city 50 miles east of Orlando, then “faced toward the alcohol cases on the shelves,” unzipped his pants, and began urinating.

“There were six cases of beer total that were damaged and could no longer be sold,” a cop reported, adding that the beer cave incident was recorded by a store surveillance camera.

150 The Hispanic vote will be interesting to watch in 2022 and 2024. New Mexico, which is around 48% Hispanic, has a Senator coming up for election in 2024 who won 54% of the vote in 2018.

Assuming that he had two-thirds of the Hispanic vote (or a 32-16 margin), if the Hispanic vote in NM were to go 50-50 in 2024 for his race, he would lose by something like a 52 to 48 margin.

152 Vijaya Gadde, the Twitter lawyer who was weeping because Elon Musk was taking over the company, came to the United States from India at age 3.

According to Wikipedia:

Her family moved to Beaumont, Texas. She has described her childhood as having been affected by the Ku Klux Klan presence in Beaumont, so much that her Indian father was required to get permission from the local Klan before he could go door-to-door for soliciting insurance.

This was in the mid-70s. I find this claim to be every bit as credible as Kamala Harris' claim that parents in Palo Alto in the mid-70s kept their kids from playing with the children of a black Stanford professor (Kamala and her sister).

I was on my Lenten hiatus when the oligarch banning started in full force, but I didn't see the point of that at the time. What did the world expect - the oligarchs would pull a Brutus on the man that enabled them to accumulate their wealth? the same guy that is former KGB? The world didn't even do that to Colombian drug lords - why Russians?

Now comes word that oligarchs tied to Gazprom, as well as their families, are mysteriously turning up dead - cause of death, 'suicide'. Completely predictable, and ridiculous.

I looked at that NM Democrat Senator's 2008 Congressional race, in which he won by a 54.65 to 44.35 margin.

If Gary Johnson doesn't run in 2024, and if all the libertarian votes go to the GOP (which probably won't be the case), then given that he won in 2018 by a 54.09 to 45.91 margin, he'll lose 54-46.

Of course, the libertarian vote could screw this up and enable him to win, but then again, the Hispanic vote might go even more to the GOP in NM than 50-50 in 2024.

IIRC, when she became a thing, all the girls suddenly wanted bushy eyebrows. Bushy eyebrows became 'sexy'.

Which is weird if you think about it. Women deciding something is sexy because another woman has a feature or some such. Not because guys are attracted to those caterpillars on your face.

267 Ah, airplane books. This is why I often buy ones in certain series (Ginter books lately) right when they come out. The thing for the last 10-15 years is to just print so many, and once they are sold never print any more, so the market drives the price way over original value. Like whoever is sitting on the rights to the Hunnicutt US Armour series. They are basically unaffordable unless you don't mind paying hundreds per book. There is a not quite as expensive softcover edition but apparently the print quality isn't that good. Don't know if younger people buy these anymore so I suppose they will flood the market at some point once the survivors sell the collection but no idea how long that will take.

Lithium has been used to treat psychiatric disorders since at least 1870. Modern professional acceptance of it dates to an extremely influential study published in 1949, by an Australian researcher. Pharma companies, and those who profit from them, dislike Lithium (probably because it is cheap and cannot be patented, like aspirin) However, to quote from the psychiatrist.com webpage on it,
"With the exception of electroconvulsive therapy, lithium remains the single most effective treatment in all of psychiatry."

In the end, its all about how much of your life you're willing to let be controlled by others and what they think. I don't know if its the lifetime as a screwball metal guitar player, or the harley thing, or what, but I have no fucks to give. This is as far as I will ever admit to on a board like this, but in metal world there are the big 4, well used to be the big 3, but seems like it's 4 now. Little 'ol screw ball berserker spent a year or so in one of them. 7 billion fucking people on this planet and I'm one of no more than a few dozen people who can make that claim. You know where it got me? Nowhere, thats where. I spent almost every day since trying to climb back up that mountain. Why? I got no fucks to give. It's an adventure, it's a challenge, its probably my fate to do it, and even if I never make it back there it's been one hell of a ride, and sometimes the journey is more important than the destination. The last few days I was mulling over the death of Joey Jordison, the slipknot drummer. He died about 9 months ago. His story is frigging heart breaking. I was never really a fan of that band, but I was of him. He was an incredible gifted drummer, and a real salt of the earth type. He influenced untold amount of kids to pick up a set of drum sticks. He was on top of the world, and ended up with a form of MS which ended with him losing the use of his legs. The band tossed him like a piece of garbage, but he never gave up. He went through treatments and slowly came back, and had a new band, but he died in his sleep this past july at 46 years old. His death hit me harder than any I can ever remember, and I still can't think about it sometimes. My journey is baby shit compared to what he went through. I had decided to semi retire from music because it was just getting too hard to be on the hamster wheel. The nerve of me to complain. I going back in, full steam ahead, fuck the world. In the end I miss the journey.

Uh...no.
Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, followed by Helium (they are mostly in stars, gas clouds, etc, although hydrogen is in the water and methane, etc)
Third is Oxygen
Fourth is Carbon
Fifth is Neon
Sixth is Iron
Lithium is the 44th most common element.
After the big bang, it WAS third (Lithium), but stellar evolution cooks up elements in stellar cores with a host of fusion reactions, and then when stars go nova or supernova, newly made elements get spewed out into the void.....and other crazy shit like that.

He did not, he played tuba and played with the Civil War band. He had the Helicon, a backfire tuba and what is called a "raincatcher"

The backfire was designed because the band would march in the front, and it was aimed backwards so the troops could hear it.
There is a lovely picture of a military band at a recording session and the tuba player was seated back to the conductor so the mic would pick him up, watching the conductor via a mirror.

Dad had an adapter added so he could sit and play facing forward

429 Kindltot.

Fellow commenter Piercello will have the connections for you as to expertise & values on that helicon.

His fellow Symphony Orchestra types are the exact profile to seek for the highest interest in your instrument.

Trumpet, Coronet and French Horn share the valving and fingering. I'd wager your helicon would be fully restored, with new felts, re-polished valve internals and other services to the horn, overall. And then it would be played and heard, in all it's glory, once more. A much better path ahead, than to rest decades more, unused and unknown.

437 Original RCA Theremin?

Those (used to) be worth some nice coin. They didn't make very many of them, they were pretty expensive at the time. I think they were going for maybe $15k to $20k back in the early 2000s. Kind of worth knowing what they look like if you're a garage/estate sale kinda guy or gal, know what I mean? Ya never know, a sharp eye and knowledge is good. Ya make money on the buy.

Anyway, they were hard to play. I always wanted to build a Tesla coil. I read some of the JSC oral project interviews, Neil Armstrong built a fairly large Tesla coil as a youth, among other things.

A surprising (or maybe not) number of the astronauts when asked about earliest influences said things like "I really got into building model airplanes" or watching Buck Rogers or Space Patrol! and stuff like that.

One early bit of horrifying "education" philosophy I recall making the rounds several years back was this notion that adventure stories and literature that caused children to think great thoughts was really bad, somehow, and should be discouraged, naturally. Guess they had even worse things in mind than destroying their dreams.

What'chu do, is research how to contact the Official U.S. Army Band, or the Band Director at West Point, and you learn how to get all those artifacts into the donation pipeline.

Both will have worthy museums. Doesn't guarantee that every artifact will make it into the displays, but on your descriptions, the odds are good. Selling those treasures at auction is iffy, but can be lucrative, but you have to research to find the RIGHT auction house, and not the local "antiques" theft-fest.

446 It just seems so far, like a different universe really - when I was in school and for years after, reading was considered a way to "go anywhere" and adventure, and limitless boundaries and all that stuff. Really fun.

So it was really, really bizarre to see this shift in The Narrative. "Children shouldn't be reading about far off, exotic places or things like that".

Really? I mean, let's just deaden their brain cells, so they can't function, can't dream about far off places, eh?

At least one of the Apollo astronauts told their mother they were going to fly to the Moon. "That's nice dear. Now clean your room." Why do these asshats in "Education" want to crush the dreams of Children? That's just evil. Rockwell/Collins Radio started with some 10 year old kid building home brew radios in his dad's garage in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Arthur Collins. When I once told a test pilot where I was from, he said "You know, "Collins Radio" is the only name I ever want to see when I climb into a cockpit."

Posted by: Common Tater at April 27, 2022 01:35 AM (yoSgP)

447 Solution to all the complaints about "misgendering" etc.: Conservatives (and other regular folks) should stop using the word "gender."

Notice how that word only started being so widely used in the last 10 years or so. We used to have a perfectly good word for the difference between man and woman. It was called your "sex," not your "gender."

The genderists themselves say they use this term to designate something other than their sex. So let's take them at their word. If someone asks you your gender, respond that it's none of their business, but your SEX is ___ (whatever it is).

449 Common Tater. Good points, all. Collins Radio is an epic take, and I hear tell that King Audio rates a very close second. But, I digress.

Point being. Boys used to play Astronaut. Cops & Robbers. Cowboys & Indians. Explorers. Adventurers. Great White Hunters. And more.

Much of what we know of "Middle Age Crazy" comes from men who grew up with such dreams, never realized, then their kids graduate, the spousal unit never inspired, and BANG! Off they go to the chest-toupee, gold chain, corvette and blone bimbo in the right seat.

So, at about age 15, listening to all these tales from my elderly (30 to 40 y/o) peers, I decided to start being Middle Aged Crazy, there and then. It's served me well. I've lived more adventures than most, not as many as some. But, it hasn't been boring. That's a fact, right there.

Apparently Twatter is doing the equivalent of shredding the documents and destroying the evidence.

I was just reading. Conservatives are noticing they've seen YUGE jumps in the number of followers they have. Don, Jr. and DeSantis being some of the biggest.

And on the other side, lefty types are seeing their followers drop.

What's happening is Twatter is now leveling the playing field, removing all the secret suppression of wrongthink and enhancement of goodthink they've been doing before Elon gets to see it.

They're going to try to clean up The Algorithm before Elon can make it public.

yeah thats pretty much true. I guess its the point where you go from what should I be doing to what do I WANT to be doing. Evrybody has a different point where they come to that realization. Some people do what they think is responsible, even when the time to be responsible is long over, or not even needed. The biggest crime I see is when somebody just lies to themselves and talk themselves out of doing stuff. I have 1 friend like that, and it drives me fucking mad. I'll hear how he wants something, and by the end of the conversation he's in the "I don't need it" zone. I'll watch him launch and then murder a dream in one sitting. But sadly, the employees under me didn't fare so well. C.E.O.'s hatred burned so deep, as to destroy all in the retiring President's reporting chain, and that was that.

Yep, Twatter is deleting the shadow ban system and throttling of wrongthink. Marjorie Taylor Greene had a yuge jump in followers as well.

Vapid celebrities are seeing yuge drops in followeres. Katy Perry lost 200K in a day. Twatter is likely killing bot accounts here. Elon don't like bots.

Many, many conservative accounts that were banned are coming back on line, I'm reading. This may be partly responsible for the jump in followers -- deactivated accounts now becoming active again. But it can't account for all it.

The liberation of Twatter is continuing apace. Elon hasn't even done anything, yet.

That description of the launch was a mixture of soaring metaphor and highly technical narrative.

For, example long discussion of the sequence of everything up to about T -10. T -10, nine, -- ignition sequence begin, 7, ....

Somewhere between T - 9 and -8, the ignition sequence started. Those 5 mighty F-1 engines were lit off. That was rendered as paragraphs, of the initial spin up of the gas generators, which drove the fuel turbo pumps, which had oh, multi-ten thousand HP themselves. Pumping some ungodly amount of RP-1 and LOX into the combustion chambers.

They built thrust. As they came to 100%, the First stage was clamped down by these tapered pins with clamps, when thrust was 100% and 5x5, those clamps explosively were released.

The Saturn V rose off the pad. Lumbering, thumping. A YUGE water tower waste gate was opened, dumping a deluge of cooling water to quench the heat of the mighty F-1s at 100% at ground level.

Critical to all this was abort modes, if something went wrong. Now, they could shut all the engines off if something went screwy, up to a point. Those tapered pins. If the first stage holes hadn't cleared those pins, the rocket would (most likely, but might not) gently settle back down.

Once the pins were cleared, then the engines went into no-shutdown possible. Even if something went catastrophically wrong, the safest thing to do was keep those engines thrusting, even against an exploding rocket, to hopefully get enough height so the escape tower could take the capsule off the top to safety.

This was the most risky part of the mission, and the least likely for successful abort.

Launch camera E-8 of Apollo 11. High speed cameras slowed down, such that about 30 seconds takes 8 minutes. In slow motion, you see the majesty of the Saturn V:

https://tinyurl.com/y6yopkms

The clips starts at about T-9, right at ignition sequence start. You'll see some flashes. That'st the lighters going off. Then those F-1s start humming. It takes a while to build up thrust.

You'll see red flame and black smoke start billowing up. Then, all of the sudden, it gets sucked back down into the pit. That's the F-1 exhaust velocity getting up to speed, and creating a vacuum that sucks everything down.

Watch the hold-down arms snap back under protective hoods, letting the beast rise off those tapered pins. You'll see the nozzles of the F-1s become visible, but you'll note soemthing curious.

There seems to be black exhaust for a few feet, then the full brightness. That black exhaust was the cooling exhaust of the gas generators feeding the turbopumps. It was much cooler than the actual exhaust of the combustion chambers and helped cool the nozzles.

Relatively cool, of course. You'll see the cameras saturate white for a few seconds from the exhaust plume.
