Ace of Spades Pet Thread, April 30

Good afternoon and welcome to this weekly respite from most of the outside "civilized" world -- the Ace of Spades Pet Thread.

Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Reminder: For current events and politics, the Thread before the Gardening Thread (a couple of threads below) is almost always an Open Thread.

How about a non-judgmental dog?

Love the pet thread. Thanks for picking up the weekly post.

I never adopted a cat, but I got to appreciate them when circumstances brought them to my home. These three have moved on, but they enriched my families lives.

The first is Sunny. He was adopted by my eldest daughter and lived with me for several years after I divorced and moved to a remote area of New Hampshire. He always sported an angry look, but was a pussy-cat. Very easy going, except when he was on the prowl.

When I remarried, my new wife brought Peeve and Tubby. Peeve was a classic Blue Russian, which means he acted like a dog. Laid back and loved to have his belly rubbed.

He got his name from my wife's son, who decided that the cat would be literally his "pet Peeve." Tubby was a rescue and almost died after being mauled by a dog, my wife and her daughter nursed her to health. She was tiny but a sweetheart.

Levin

Well, those three cats are distinctive! That angry look does not fit with the name Sunny, but I guess his personality did!

Great stories with the other two kitties, too. Sounds like they were blessed to live with you and your family. Beautiful cats.

Over the years you graciously posted pictures of my four legged canine companions.

The mix has changed as some are waiting for us on the other side of the rainbow bridge. What has been constant is the joy they bring to our lives.

The single dog is Gizmo, who came to our family 11/01/21 as a stray. One look at her face tells you why. Sometimes she is sweet like Gizmo from the movie. The very next moment, she is all gremlin.

The other two are Lily Bear (Great Pyrenees) and Dakota Belle (All American mutt). They love to wrestle and make us laugh.

Laughter and love given are important to me as I am diagnosed with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer. I fight hard everyday to spend time with my loving wife, family, friends, and of course, these three blessings.

Brian

Great dogs. Sorry to hear about your health challenges, Brian. We're pulling for you. The time you spend with your wife, family, friends and pets is precious. We appreciate your update and photos.

14 That photo of Sunny might as well be a photo of Hobbes. Hobbes was given to us by a friend who was moving to Sweden and couldn't take him. Hobbes was an inveterate hunter, killing birds and rodents in equal numbers. Eventually the neighbors got upset about that so we had to send him off to live on our buddy's farm, where he could prowl and kill with immunity.

He was also a filler of laps, a snuggler with unending purr, and one heck of a good sport. Kinda miss the old boy.

Posted by: BignJames at April 30, 2022 03:35 PM (AwYPR)

22 I took the old dog, Loretta, to the vet for evaluation this week. I wanted to know if he thought she could handle a cross country move. His opinion is no. He said she is just hanging on. A move would be too stressful and disorienting. It's pretty much what I thought, as she goes downhill after every seizure. So I will take care of her until I wrap things up here and then it will be time to do the right thing.

***
My first thought is that each color is sex-linked; but if that were true we would *always* have male red cats and female calicos, and we don't. I guess it's that the color is dominant depending on the sex of the cat?

Don't go by me. I always dozed off during genetics discussions in biology class.

29 As for cat expressions: Both of my black cats had fierce, fussy expressions; but both were easygoing and adaptable. Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat in particular was, I suspect, the happiest cat i've ever known.

Chekov had a sweet face; it had been bred into him. Part of the breed standard for Siberians is a sweet expression. Arizona the big red tabby had a sweet look too -- very deceptive. Oreo the elderly tuxedo cat often looked as if something worried her. And Tatiana, Chekov's aunt, had a rather fierce look like a cheetah, but was very good-natured too.

47 I told the vet that I never want to put a dog down because it is inconvenient to me. The truth is that changes are stressful for her at the house now and this is familiar ground. I really don't think she could deal with it but it's hard because she can still muddle around a bit. Will probably be a few more months before this wraps up. It may be an easier decision then.

Ya know those flea & tick bracelets people wear for hiking and camping? My dad told me how ticks are attracted to the groin area, because of the warmth/humidity.

So I had the bright idea when I was maybe twelve or thirteen, to put one of those things around my junk.

That was poorly conceived and executed plan. On bare crotch-skin, they will give you a rash you won't forget soon.

59 Anyone know why most orange/yellow cats are male?...and calicos female?
Posted by: BignJames at April 30, 2022 03:35 PM (AwYPR)

Yes. The gene that makes a cat orange is on the X gene which determines the cat's sex. So a female is XX and a male is XY. Because males only have one X, mammals at least have evolved a thing called X inactivation, which turns off one of the Xes. If a female has one Orange X and a Black X, part of the body will have orange fur, other parts black.

So to be Orange, a female needs to be Orange on both genes. A male only has one, so it only needs one to be orange. If a female has one of each, it is either a tortie or calico, depending on other genes. Since normal males have only one color gene, they can't be Calico. Rarely a XXY cat, or a chimera, can make a male with both colors.
