The CDC Decides The Science (TM) Says There's an Emergency In the Skies Requiring Continued Mandatory Masking (But No Emergency on the Ground Necessitating Speedy Deportation of Illegal Aliens, Strangely Enough)
No one in the Weekend At Biden's Administration wants to take the blame for foisting this unpopular policy on the American public, so everyone passed the buck.
When they passed it to the CDC, the CDC was caught flat-footed and had to look at The Science (TM). One suspects they were not analyzing the "science," but once again, consulting with "stakeholders" and politicians about the politics of it: Can we afford to piss off the Krazy Kovid Karens, the only cohort in America that still supports Biden by majority numbers? Well, now they've gotten a chance to do their homework and they say yes, we're still in an emergency, but only as far as Americans infecting Americans, and Americans will have to wears masks on planes, but I guess we can still suspend Title 42 as far as illegal aliens sneaking across the border.The Centers for Disease Control officially asked the Department of Justice to appeal a ruling by a federal judge in Florida earlier this week that struck down the Biden administration's mask mandate for travel. "To protect CDC's public health authority beyond the ongoing assessment announced last week, CDC has asked DOJ to proceed with an appeal in Health Freedom Defense Fund, Inc., et al., v. Biden, et al. It is CDC's continuing assessment that at this time an order requiring masking in the indoor transportation corridor remains necessary for the public health. CDC will continue to monitor public health conditions to determine whether such an order remains necessary. CDC believes this is a lawful order, well within CDC's legal authority to protect public health," CDC released in a statement Wednesday evening. "CDC continues to recommend that people wear masks in all indoor public transportation settings. CDC's number one priority is protecting the public health of our nation. As we have said before, wearing masks is most beneficial in crowded or poorly ventilated locations, such as the transportation corridor," the statement continues. Because of filtration systems onboard, airplanes have been shown to be one of the safest places from Wuhan coronavirus because they are extremely well ventilated.Here's the trouble with this decision: Just a couple of weeks ago, when Biden was thinking about merely asking for an extension of the still-in-place airline mask mandate, people like Kirsten Sinema and a lot of of Republicans asked Problematic Questions like, "If Covid is still an emergency in the American Skies, why is it not an emergency on the Mexican Border?"

He's not the real POTUS but point taken. This question becomes much more acute now that the Weekend at Biden's Administration isn't just seeking a two week extension in the policy, but taking the dramatic move of going to court to re-assert its dubious authority to impose it. It wouldn't be a story without Grandpa Felonyfingers becoming cringily confused about the issue. Asked about suspending the repeal of Title 42's provision about deporting illegal aliens, Biden gets confused and starts talking about the mask mandate -- authority for which is claimed to be granted by a different part of Title 42 -- and says he's waiting for "strong science" to tell him whether or not to appeal. But he was asked if he was going to delay the repeal of Title 42, not whether he was going to appeal the mask mandate.
The move by the CDC to extend the mask mandates on airplanes while simultaneously providing Biden cover for opening the border will likely be the last straw. There is simply no way to defend both recommendations at the same time. American levels of vaccination in the population (as well as immunity by exposure) outstrip the Central American countries that comprise most of the border surge. If the pandemic is still acute enough to warrant imposing masks on all travelers inside the US, why would we risk allowing travelers outside the US with unknown vaccination and exposure statuses to enter without restriction? On what "science" would that be based -- other than "political" science, the kind most often practiced at the CDC?

I wonder if the Weekend at Biden's Administration will seek to not really appeal the decision by not seeking a stay of the judge's decision while it appeals. That is, usually, they would seek a stay of the ruling during the appeal, meaning, the judge's ruling would be held in abeyance and the mask mandate would be back in effect while the appeal process goes forward.
But maybe they won't file to stay the ruling -- maybe they'll leave the ruling in place, and the mask mandate therefore ruled illegal, while they appeal, so that it will only be back in effect if and when they win their appeal.
I bet they might just do that!

Probably. I think it is like Psaki said, that this is so the CDC can do this again in the future. Because they want it to end but they know they must appease the Covid Karens. So they appeal, but let the ruling stand during appeal. And if they win they'll still let it end and just talk about how it was about making it possible to reimplement in the future.

The way I see it, Disney has four options:
1) Move Disney World to a nearby red state that won't give them the same deal and will not let them get away with crazy crap either, and it would cost over a billion dollars.
1b) Disney World has to be in the east, as an alternate to Disneyland.
2) Rebuild Disneyland into Disney World, but there's no room and they cannot expand any further than it is already. Besides, See 1b
3) Move Disneyland to a northern state and be open only a few months out of the year. Which would severely damage their bottom line.
4) Suck it up and stay in Florida.

Disney's made itself too big of a target, though, and the costs of moving a whole park the size of San Francisco are so astronomically high that the state would essentially have to pay for the move to get them there.

There remains a limited use case for democracy in certain states and locales. Certainly, if you live in a place like FL - vote harder.
At the federal level it's pointless, and it's pointless in most states as well. I just view voting as an extremely limited tool. Like maybe, the tenth one down on the list of useful things.

It should never EVER be forgotten the differences in Disney World vs. Disney Land over the last couple of years. Disney Land was outright shut down for almost two years because of CA regulations. World has been open almost the whole time because of FL regulations.
It was so bad in CA that Disney moved thousands of back end employees from CA to FL last year to take more full advantage of the friendly business climate in FL.

Depending on how things unfold, there is a possibility that Disney can wrangle some kind of special status for their little island kingdom and make it so flights and boats can go there without needing a passport, shots, etc. They've gotten deals like that before. Release a half dozen billion dollar movies and you have a lot of cash to influence governments with.
Still, super expensive to rebuild from scratch. I'm not sure their pockets are THAT deep, and the Bamahas can't subsidize them.

It's not just the cost of building the stupid park, you also have to factor in all of the subsidiary costs like energy, maintenance, supplies, and so forth. If the park is moved offshore somewhere, then you have to have infrastructure to support it and supply routes. That shit adds up real fast.

The point of the judge's decision was that the CDC does not have ANY Constitutional Authority to make these kinds of declarations and administrative directives.
If Congress had acted, voted through a law supporting "masks" and signed by the President, that would be different.

I was just forced to deal with the DMV in person. It was next level fucked up, and proof CA is a third world shithole. I almost pointed and screamed "look, a white guy!" when one walked in. The best part was to finish my registration they told me to go to a kiosk because they couldn't take a credit card, and it had to be a credit card. Of course, the kiosk didn't work, and the lady who was all huffy at me for being a dummy at not being able to get the kiosk to work found out that indeed, the kiosk didn't work. The state of CA apparently can't give employees full access to computers, so this is what we get.
And our health care is going to be the same. "Go to the hemorrhaging kiosk over there and give it your obamacare and social security information, once it takes your credit card bring the receipt back to me and we can give you a number."
I won't even get into the fact that the online registration can't tell the difference between a 0 and an O.

Women's lacrosse is a fast game with a lot of running and scoring. It's fun to watch. Men's lacrosse isn't. It very quickly devolves to 6 guys in a hexagon around the goal passing to each other in the hope of getting an open shot, with 6 defenders inside of them trying to block the shot.

My experience is from 20 years ago, but back then the boomer were all pretty noisy, but they had some quiet attack boats. A few were as quiet as the Los Angles class.
The US went the other direction where are boomers are quieter than the attack boats, but not by much.

My high school swim coach played college football as a DB. His team played Syracuse, and he had the pleasure of trying to open-field tackle Jim Brown. Apparently it was a textbook tackle, at least according to the game film, but it just didn't work, and Brown scored. He also said it hurt a lot.

The Barr brothers (Chris and Mathew) spent a couple decades in the NFL kicking extra points. One of those SOB's was a high school soccer player, who thoroughly contused me when I challenged him. Believe it or not, a soccer ball to the face is pretty damn close to a fist to the head, if not harder. Both of my contact lens ended way up where it took me ten minutes to push them back down. When I came to, alone in the locker room, I got my contacts back in position and wandered back down to the field. The coach looked at me derisively then asked if I was ready to go back in. I guess the concussion protocol was a little different back then. I went back in.

I played a high school game against Fred Smerlas. Well, mercifully I didn't have to line up against him but I was technically in the game.
I remember him taking the biggest kid on our team who was like 6'2" and 275 and just pummeling play after play. I actually hated the kid he was beating on so that took some of the sting away, for me at least.
