Regarding Florida's congressional map: Florida's legislature submitted a map which was partisan and gerrymandered. DeSantis rejected it, as not partisan and gerrymandered enough. This is exactly what Democrats do when they have power and it's about fucking time we started acting like we're not ashamed to have power ourselves. Proof that this is the right thing to do comes from the leftwing Florida propaganda corporate press shrieking that it's not fair and also "racist."
On Tuesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that he is calling on the state legislature to consider legislation in a special session to end the Walt Disney Company's special protections after the company committed to opposing the recently signed Parental Rights in Education Act. ... "I am announcing today that we are expanding the call of what they are going to be considering," DeSantis said during a press conference. "Yes, they will be considering the congressional map but they also will be considering termination of all special districts that were enacted in Florida prior to 1968 and that includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District."
Suck my dick. Leftwing propagandists claim it's racist because some of the seats that Democrats would lose have black voters in them. Therefore: racist. I mean, obviously. No seriously, the argument, such as it is, is that the map would affect districts where black voters are guaranteed to elect "their preferred candidate" -- that is, where they're guaranteed a black representative -- and therefore changing those districts is de facto racist. The new map changes boundaries so that black-dominated Democrat districts also have more white and Latino Democrat voters. The districts still concentrate Democrat voters into districts -- that's the point of a gerrymander, to cram all the other party's voters into as few districts as possible -- but now the racial make-up is a bit mixed so blacks aren't guaranteed black representatives.
Gov. DeSantis' congressional map stacks the deck for Republicans Editorial The map is headed for a legal showdown if it passes through this week's special session. Florida's congressional districts are already a problem. Too many voters of one political party or another are concentrated in awkwardly drawn districts. The gerrymandering leads to fewer competitive races, which undermines the democratic process. Unfortunately, it's likely to get worse. Traditionally, the state House and Senate draw the districts for Florida's congressional races every 10 years. This year, the Legislature proposed a map with a couple more Republican-leaning districts than the current map, but that's not unexpected when Republicans have strong majorities in the state House and Senate. But Gov. Ron DeSantis didn’t like the Legislature's plan. He vetoed it and touted his own map.
In Florida's congressional delegation, Republicans currently have a 16 to 11 edge over Democrats. The state gets an additional district this year due to its population growth, bringing the total to 28. The governor's map would further concentrate Democratic voters into fewer districts, favoring Republicans in 20 of the 28 districts. Democrats would win certain districts easily, but Republicans would win more.
DeSantis's plan severely undercuts the voting power of Black Floridians. There are currently four districts in the state where Black voters can elect their preferred candidates. His plan would leave just two.See? Unless you racially gerrymander districts to guarantee a some races that they will only have representatives of their own race, that's racist. It's anti-racist to insist on special racial rights and racial separatism! Meanwhile, the Florida Retirement Fund owns stock in Twitter, and DeSantis says he might just sue Twitter's board of directors for putting their own personal financial and political interests above those of the stockholders by rejecting Musk's offer and adopting a poison pill which will prevent Musk from buying more stock at premium prices.
He's talking about filing a shareholder derivative suit. In such a suit, any shareholder files a lawsuit on behalf of the company itself, claiming the board of directors is acting against the best interests of the company. (That's where the "derivative" part comes in -- the shareholder's right to sue derives from the company's right to sue its own board; the shareholder steps in for "the company.") There is nothing exotic about this lawsuit. A shareholder can sue the board of literally any company he holds stock in, if he has grounds to do so. DeSantis has grounds. And he is the executive with the fiduciary responsibility over the shares the Florida retirement fund owns. Florida is a Twitter shareholder, so Florida can sue. Leftwing Democrat Jared Polis, governor of Coloardo, called DeSantis an "authoritarian socialist" for refusing to allow Florida to become a Corporate-dominated feudal state, which has created a very predictable boomlet of "Polis for President" among the neoliberal grifters of NeverTrump Democrats.
DeSantis says he's "looking at ways the state of Florida potentially can be holding these Twitter board of directors accountable for breaching their fiduciary duty." He says his is not a benign threat because his state owns shares of Twitter. "I didn't buy it [and] we have people that run the fund," said the Florida Republican, but he said Twitter has some explaining to do. "[Twitter] hasn't exactly been great on returns on investment; it has been pretty stagnant for many, many years. To me, I think that is probably an injury to the fund." DeSantis wasn't done. "The question is, why would you reject the 20% premium? I don't think that was a rejection based on financial concerns or business judgment," he told a news conference today. "They rejected it because they know they can't control Elon Musk, they know he will not accept the narrative, and that their little play toy of Twitter would not be used to enforce orthodoxy and to basically prop up the regime and these failed legacy media outlets."

Polis is a unicorn in modern American politics in that he's an intriguing Democrat. He has a libertarian streak that's uncommon in his party and which showed itself most strikingly during the pandemic, when he refused to reinstate Colorado's mask mandate despite pleas from lefties to do so... He's left-wing on most cultural matters but that libertarian streak combined with being pro-business (Polis was a huge business success at a young age before entering politics) makes him a little different from standard-issue progressives. And now here he is, picking a fight with the populist right's second-favorite politician by calling him a "socialist," of all things. Hmmmmmm. Is Polis... thinking about 2024? Our president is a thousand years old; our vice president frequently seems lost in interviews. There's a huge vacuum at the top of the party potentially. Polis is smart, has experience as both a congressman and a governor, and could tout himself as someone who may have more appeal than the average Dem to swing voters because of his more centrist stances on masks and business. His one major potential electoral liability is that he's gay, since Americans may not want a gay commander-in-chief.That only endears him to the sexual libertines and Groomer Allies of NeverTrump. Yes, I'm sure Polis is a real libertarian, just like you, Allah. You know, the way you supported the state imposing vax mandates on corporations -- how libertarian! -- and then suddenly found your libertarianism again when DeSantis signed an order... forbidding corporations from imposing vax mandates.
Seems your own libertarianism is highly selective, and just tracks with left-liberal social policy preferences. I bet that Jared Polis' own "libertarian streak" follows a very similar tack!

That is a heck of a lot more consistent than giving ONLY Disney the deal. I and most other people are tired of the "give huge tax breaks and help build their facilities" deals that states give gigantic megacorps. He's talking about filing a shareholder derivative suit. In such a suit, any shareholder files a lawsuit on behalf of the company itself, claiming the board of directors is acting against the best interests of the company. (That's where the "derivative" part comes in -- the shareholder's right to sue derives from the company's right to sue its own board; the shareholder steps in for "the company.")
There is nothing exotic about this lawsuit. A shareholder can sue the board of literally any company he holds stock in, if he has grounds to do so. DeSantis has grounds. And he is the executive with the fiduciary responsibility over the shares the Florida retirement fund owns. Florida is a Twitter shareholder, so Florida can sue.

He won't be. It will be the attny gen'l for state of Fla. on behalf of the citizens of Fla. The state has invested in twitter.
Need an injury to have a shareholder derivative action. So they have to show the board decision was not in the interest of the shareholders but taken for a private reason - self dealing, usually, - and that it hurt the shareholders financially. Here is was political. They will claim it increased public goodwill or some non tangible horseshit like that.

The Democrats play for keeps. What is the Republican response to blood libel and outrageous invective and inciting riots? Typically they go out and make a speech, where they A. Accept the leftist talking point premises - which are always by definition outrageous and offensive. B. Apologize for something we are not guilty of. C. Lose "gracefully", and implicitly state "We shall never speak of this again." And they don't. Democrats never quit. Republicans never even start. And here we are.
This has been going on for so long, people start to think this is the natural order of things. And when Republicans hold both houses of Congress and the Presidency, they come out on the Sunday talk shows and claim "Our hands are tied. There's nothing we can do". And people just shrug and think that's just how it is.

I don't think so either. Walker really only had one issue and that was crushing the teachers' union. In the presidential primary, he sounded like a generic GOP-bot, low taxes, more legal immigration, and corporate power.

Then they increased their monthly fee.
Bunch of people canceled.
Pretty sure everyone with kids canceled following the Cuties roll out.
Basically, they projected adding 2.5 million subscribers and got a big negative number instead.

This does not surprise me.
Netflix had a huge share of the streaming market by being the first and having enormous amounts of content. But as more streaming services arose, and more companies pulled content off Netflix for their own service, the old first streamer suddenly had less and less interesting content.
So they had a smart idea: produce our own stuff, put our own fresh and unique content on instead of re running old stuff from other people. And for a while, it worked. Their Marvel stuff was mostly pretty good, and they had some other interesting content.
But... Disney yanked all their content and what Netflix has tried to replace it with is largely not at all compelling and often is just plain horrible (cuties, anyone?). So yeah, I can see how a lot of people would just stop subscribing and look at other sources of entertainment.

Desantis has done something that Trump never thought necessary - he did the hard work necessary (adding supporters, removing opponents) to make sure he had the solid support of his own side before he did anything else. That's *why* he can make big pronouncements without any fear he's going to get knifed in the back by his own side.

Look at Kristol's bibliography, he's "edited" a few political/policy anthologies, has one or two collections of his newspaper/magazine columns, and has one book co-written with a lesser-known younger author. Which means that Kristol did a quick outline and the other guy did all the work.

Serious question. what about the white, or Hispanic, or Asian voters living in the minority-majority districts? Doesn't drawing the map such that a black candidate is guaranteed victory stripping white, Hispanic, Asian, and Jewish voters of the right to elect their preferred candidates?
Why doesn't that matter? I've never understood who creating minority-majority districts can pass constitutional muster under any logical analysis. it is pure discrimination against everyone but black people.
the other laughable term they use is "communities of interest" (which usually means either neighborhoods of Hispanics, or Jews, or Asians in actuality). the argument is that all of the people of a certain religious sect, for instance, should all be in the same district to have the best chance of electing someone from their sect.
Again, I ask why?

I was watching some of the TikTok videos that the lady had exposed, of weirdo teachers grooming schoolkids. One nutcase was talking about how she was trying to raise "an army of lesbians," another guy was showing photos of himself, in various drag outfits, to his class (you couldn't see the kids, but could hear them giggling and making comments in the background).
It still astonishes me that these people think it's appropriate to be discussing their sexual preferences or their sexual activities or whatever to little kids, and trying to get their approval. Part of being a mature adult is knowing that other people's opinions of you don't matter, but somehow these teachers never got the message. They crave kids' approval like a drug addict craves hits from the crack pipe. It's quite pathetic, and very troubling to think that these deeply disturbed and emotionally immature people have been entrusted with teaching kids.

No, not impossible at all. It's just very high-risk. If you do that and she doesn't want to and then complains to HR about it, you could end up getting canned by HR and lawyers. There is no guarantee that will happen and in fact most women probably won't do that it will be fine - but the risk is there, and the consequences are brutal if you guess wrong. So the smart play is to just not do it. And that's a problem, because work often isn't a bad place to meet a girlfriend.

Netflix was great when it got all of the most recent movies and you could watch those. then it stopped getting new releases (after their theatrical run) and went to pretty much old movies they already had and their own content (which is very SJW and not very good for the most part). Now, Netflix is pretty useless. They have maybe one or two shows a year worth watching and nothing more.
In fact, none of the streaming services are very good. None offer the new releases any longer, and if they do = they have a surcharge to watch them. And their own content sucks except one or two shows. It's not sustainable. Amazon Prime, Netlfix, Hulu, Apple+, Disney+, Paramount+, are all overpriced for what they deliver.
the streaming wars are going to have to collapse to 2 or 3 services, or else significantly reduce their prices, otherwise no service will have enough good content to be worthwhile.

I think it is changing over time dramatically. People are getting used to connecting online and getting to know each other in a useful way that supplants face-to-face just out of necessity and sheer loneliness. I can attest heartily and almost violently that absolutely you do not remotely even begin to learn enough about someone online to make a relationship beyond buddy. If all you're after is sex, you can do that anyway you want, because no relationship is involved, just animal lust.
But if you want love and a future together, online is at best, at the most efficient, at just getting you to meet up and find out whether its worth trying to go any further or not. Its even worse than just dating to find out about someone; everyone is playing a role and worse, you interpret what you learn from them how you hope it is rather than what is really going on.
Especially with just text, chatting/texting whatever, you interpret their tone of voice and meaning to be what you want it to be, and have no idea what exactly they meant.

Yes, that is what I am trying to say. I currently have a bunch of streaming services, but am going to get rid of most, if not all, of them b/c they simply don't have value. I can rarely find anything decent to watch. You'd think between cable tv and several streaming services I'd have too much to watch. But I literally can't find anything that holds my interest.
I liked the first season of Ted Lasso on Apple+. 2nd season sucked so bad I stopped watching 1/2 way thru. I liked Foundation on Apple+, but now I watched the first season (and it takes more than a year between seasons) and there's nothing else on Apple worth watching. I like Halo on Paramount+, but there's nothing else on Paramount worth watching. There's currently nothing on Netflix or Prime to watch.

Yeah this is like early on with cell phone companies, a bunch of them were out there and over time they got gobbled up so only a few exist any longer. Its inevitable, there are way too many streaming services to possibly serve people and folks cannot possibly afford to run them all.
You only have x hours a day to spend watching crap on a screen anyway, so there's an absolute maximum number of potential customer hours out there. We're past that point with the 903824 streaming services, so we should start seeing them condense and collapse soon.
Ideally we end up with a couple really good services with great content, but its probably going to be like Cable TV with 9000 options and almost nothing to watch.

It was nice because I was working 70 hours a week and traveling for work half the month so it was a way I could "meet" and communicate with someone for a bit before meeting up.

Who does that - who takes characters you've invested in and radically change them? (I think this used to happen on Soap Operas - but over a span of years, not days).

Yeah, I only have apple b/c I got a free year subscription with purchase of a new Ipad. Probably will not renew for the reasons previously cited.
One strategy would be if there's a show on service you like - wait until all episodes are released, purchase a subscription, binge watch during that month then cancel the subscription. I think that is what I'm heading toward.

And I don't know. Looking at the way things played out. Walt bought up the land through shell companies, hiding what he was doing and to keep the price low. And then after he had all the land they petitioned the government for the creation of the self governing district. So it's not the government saying come build your resort here and not somewhere else and you get these perks. It's Disney saying this is our land and we want to do this and it will be quicker with some self governance and very helpful to the state.

This is why smart State Governors are almost always the best political choice to move up. They already are in charge of their own state police forces, and it's pretty hard for outside forces (the Feds) to jump into their home turf without getting exposed for doing it. Also, it helps when you've got a Governor who already knows they're out to get him, so he takes precautions.

It's more bad ass than you think. He not only took on the RINOs, he punked them. The House and Senate RINO leaders who tried to shove the weak re-districting through reportedly had a meeting with Big D Desantis.
He told them that if they did not pass his re-districting plan or a better one, that he would find candidates to primary them, use his PAC to give the new candidates $250K each, and then spend half his time campaigning in their districts against them.
The new plan passed easily today and will so again tomorrow.
Balls matter GOP ladies. Use them.
