Training Basics

bunnyocalypse 041722 scaled.jpg

I often have the good fortune to work with new shooters introducing them to the shooting sports. In this case I am not talking about teaching advanced long distance shooting techniques, but rather spending time with the average guy or gal who has expressed an interest in firearms. Maybe they have a handgun, or are interested in buying one, or sometimes they are just using one of mine. Whatever the case, they may be a beginner, or sometimes even have a little bit of range time under their belt and are looking to improve their results.

In the abstract, shooting is pretty simple. Point the gun at the middle of the target and without moving it, squeeze the trigger. BAM! Bullet hole in the exact center. Congratulations! You're fully trained.

What do you mean it's not that simple? Did I leave something out? Perhaps a strange and mystical incantation to appease the range gods? Point the gun at the target, don't wiggle it around, and pull the trigger. I don't know about all y'all, but that's what I do and it seems to work. What's your problem?

OK, Weasel is using hyperbole to make a point. If I were to make a list of the things to do, it could be as short as those three big points, or as many as a dozen or more smaller individual points within each needed to get to those bigger outcomes. How in the world do you learn (or teach) all the myriad steps necessary to develop consistent and repeatable grip and stance mechanics, sight alignment, and trigger control, in a single day? The answer is you don't. You can't. It's impossible. You may run across someone who appears to be a natural shooter from time to time, and that's great, but it takes a lot of time and practice to become a really good and consistent shooter.

The point I am trying to make is you need to approach learning to shoot incrementally. Don't watch a bunch of YouTube Videos and read a bunch of gun forums (this one excepted) and head to the range expecting to be Wyatt Earp on day one. It simply isn't going to happen, and what you will likely do is pick up a lot of other people's bad habits in the process.

So what Weasel Teachings do I have to offer? What is the WeaselWay? Let me offer you some points to consider.

Establish and Manage Goals - A day at the range looks much different for someone who just wants to shoot for funsies during an afternoon, and someone who has set an objective of becoming a better shooter. Sometimes goals can change over time and the casual 50 round once-per-year shooter decides they want to up their game. No problem with that, and in fact I encourage it because I like shooting, however, the paths they take are very different. Goals are individual but a reasonable one for a new shooter might be something like 70% of rounds on target. Take your targets home and study them. Keeps records. If you aren't achieving your progress goals, then analyze why.

Establish and Manage Expectations - Have a plan. If your plan is to have fun for a few hours and forget about shooting until next time, then just have fun and forget it until next time. If you want to become a consistently better shooter you have to practice and that means an investment of time and money. If you do not want to waste your time and money, then a training plan with sensible goals and milestones is in order but again, manage your expectations. Despite my earlier characterization, shooting consistently well is not as easy as it seems. Some will pick up good shooting habits more quickly than others. It's part art and part science, and do not expect to master any of it quickly. Everyone has bad days at the range. Make whatever caused you trouble on your last range trip the first thing you concentrate on the next time at the range.

Learn the Fundamentals First - First things first. Learn the basics until they are second nature. Do you learn advanced mathematics by starting at the back of the book? Of course not. You start at the beginning, and it's no different with shooting. Stance and grip, sight alignment and trigger discipline are all elements which must be learned individually and applied collectively. Much of the process is just learning the correct technique and applying it consistently through muscle memory. Think of it like riding a bike, at first you're all wobbly and crashing into stuff but with enough practice it's second nature. Shooting is precisely the same way. If you develop bad habits, you'll eventually have to unlearn them and are just making the hill steeper. Picking up a gun and finding the right grip should come automatically. Same with a good sight picture, trigger habits and all the rest.

Smart Practice - Your time and money are valuable, so be smart on how you spend them. Again, have a plan and at first do not try and apply everything at once, which almost always returns disappointing results because there is much to master. Start with grip and stance, then sight alignment, then trigger discipline as you practice. Pick one element and focus on that when you head to the range. Learn the whole process in layers. When you begin to feel comfortable with one area then switch to another. If you're getting tired, take a break. You are using large muscles and small muscles at the same time and may have to work on your endurance.

I tell people not to place a lot of emphasis on making groups on the target in the beginning at all. I am being completely serious. Of course it's fun to have a target with a ragged hole in the middle, but that should not be your initial objective as you learn. For beginners, set up the target at a reasonable distance, say 20 feet, and as long as you are simply hitting the target somewhere, do not worry about group size. Focus on the fundamentals first and foremost and the little groups will almost always follow by themselves.

Choose One Gun - It's fun to shoot lots of different guns on a range trip and there is nothing wrong with trying something new. When you are practicing though, pick one gun you like and stick with that. I often take five or six different guns to the farm and will switch among them during a range session. When you're learning to shoot, however, this can slow your progress because you are essentially starting from scratch each time you pick the next one up. Every gun has a slightly different feel whether it's from ergonomics, caliber, trigger feel and a host of other factors. Decide on a training gun and practice mostly with that one.

Final Thoughts - Shooting is fun and enjoyable. Shooting well is a skill which is developed over time through practice. If you aren't seeing the results you expect, take a video of yourself shooting or ask a range buddy to watch and offer suggestions. Again, don't try and learn the whole enchilada at once, rather take it in manageable chunks and concentrating on one aspect when you go to the range. Realize that what you're doing is a complex activity combining gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and even endurance. Combining them all takes skill acquired through repetitive practice. Lots and lots of practice.

Finally, don't forget to have fun!

**

P.S. If there is any interest, email me or speak up in the comments and I can elaborate on these points in future threads by examining each in a little more detail. It may not be the only way of doing something, but it'll be the WeaselWay.

Triggers Part Dos

correction image 2 041722 scaled.jpg

Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit, looks like I have a correction to make!

Whoops! Whoopsie-doodle!

You may recall our discussion last Sunday on triggers and the various nomenclature related to their operation. Among other brilliant observations, I included the following:

Trigger Creep - positive trigger movement which does not cause the sear to move
Trigger Wall - the point when the trigger mechanism first engages the resistance of the sear
Trigger Break - the point where the trigger movement causes the sear to release the hammer

I received a nice email from our pal Navig8r correcting one of the points I made, specifically on the definition of trigger creep.

Navig8er writes:

I would make a minor correction to your discussion of triggers in this week's AoS Gun Thread.

I disagree with the above definition of Trigger Creep. Trigger Creep is the positive trigger movement (after Trigger Wall) which does cause the sear to move. I have found several other web sites that agree on this point, to include
the one that you linked to later in the column.

The article states:

"I divide trigger pull into four major stages:

Pre-travel: The trigger's movement from the trigger's initial starting position until the sear moves, causing a gun to fire. The terms take-up (also call trigger slack), the wall, and creep are all a part of pretravel. Take-up refers to any 'positive' movement of the trigger that does not cause the sear to move and does not engage the mainspring. The wall is the point where the trigger action first engages the resistance of the sear. Creep is any 'positive' movement of the trigger that does cause the sear to move (emphasis added) and does engage the mainspring.

Break: The point of the trigger action where the sear releases the hammer (or the striker, depending on the type of action). This is the stage where your gun goes bang.

Over-travel: Any 'positive' movement of the trigger after the break.

Reset: The 'negative' movement (i.e., the trigger moves away from you) of the trigger to the point that the trigger re-engages the sear (or the striker, depending on the type of action), and the gun can be fired again."

Looks like I ought to actually read the links I include here!

Navig8r went on to write:

Adding my sometimes less than humble opinion to the discussion on which are the most important trigger parameters, I believe that what happens after the break is the greatest area of concern for deliberate, precision shooting. Short of having the generally accepted definition of an ideal trigger (light pull, breaks like glass, no over travel), then the greatest enemy of precision is a sharp break followed by an over travel with much less resistance than the resistance immediately preceding the break. Finger pressure on the trigger is acting to take the weapon off target, but you are resisting with the other factors of your hold of the weapon so the weapon remains on target. When the trigger breaks, the pressures are momentarily unbalanced and the weapon lurches off target.

If the over travel cannot be eliminated, then a trigger design that maintains the same to gently increasing pressure through and after the break will eliminate the lurch.

Other aspects of trigger pull such as take up, creep, staging, stacking, weight of pull may be annoying depending on individual preferences, but are not the enemies of precision that lurch during over travel is.

As noted in the Power Point epistle I sent you on dry firing a while back, with experimentation and practice it is possible to reduce or eliminate lurch from a less than wonderful trigger (mainly by concentrating on getting the forces and motions precisely aligned fore and aft with respect to the bore), but the discussion thread was about selecting a good trigger in the first place.

Nicely done, Navig8r! Thank you! I can't recall where I sourced the original definitions, but they are certainly contradicted by the linked article, which upon review, makes sense. I appreciate your taking the time to follow up and correct the error for the benefit of everyone!

Shootin' Steel

steel WA 041722 scaled.jpg

We shoot steel targets a lot at WeaselAcres. It's fun and the feedback is fairly instantaneous. Once in place you don't waste any time with setup, and they only require periodic touch up with spray paint as you use them.

What happens to the bullet on impact with AR500 Steel? I wanted to embed a video, but stoopid YouTube won't allow it. Anyhow, here's a link to a good video.

Bullet splatter is a real thing. Please protect your eyeballs!

Shootin' Bench

Recently someone inquired regarding the table sometimes seen in the shooting videos from WeaselAcres. It's an OmniTable-4-in-1-Portable-Work-Table-Bench which I picked up from Home Depot, but you can find them a lot of places online for about the same $150 price.

I have to say I have been particularly pleased with this table as a shooting bench, although I originally purchased it as a general work table. It has a bunch of other features and is very sturdy and well made. At $150 I consider it a decent buy. WeaselApproved!

Gun Basics 101
Here is a good video from the She Equips Herself gal on handgun cleaning. Bonus for Morons - no complicated words!

SEH gal makes a point in the video on cleaning frequency. It isn't really necessary to clean your gun at the molecular level each time you shoot it. I keep my carry gun reasonably clean, but let's just say I have a relaxed standard for cleaning all the others. Just as SEH gal mentions, I used to clean them faithfully after each and every range trip and considered that part of my process, but as time went by have fallen out of the habit.

How about you? How often are you cleaning your guns? After each use, or some other frequency?

Cigar of the Week
Our pal rhomboid shares a new find!

rhomboid cigar 3 041722 scaled.jpg

Joya de Nicaragua Antano Connecticut, toro size (6 X 50). Discovered this via a sampler pack. Rated "90" by Cigar Afficionado. A Connecticut with a difference - more medium-bodied (some listings rate it as "full", but I think that's overstating things). More depth and flavor than many Connecticuts, but still smooth and easy smoking. Good candidate for mild-cigar smokers wanting to tip-toe up the strength scale just a bit. Paired here with a big mug of Cafe du Monde chicory coffee on a cool afternoon.

Thanks for the tip, rhomboid!

***

Is this how you light your cigar?

Seems complicated! I toast the foot with my trusty ol' Zippo and I'm off to the races. Lots of cigar experts cringe at the thought of using a Zippo, feeling the lighter fluid imparts a taste to the cigar, but I frankly haven't noticed it. Plus I like my Zippo!

So money where my mouth is: got an adapter plate and a green dot for my P226.

My 29 yo eyes thank me. But, systems are a thing. Apparently my 226 was iffy on 115gn rounds. After adding the optic kit was 1/3 FTF. But 124gn is perfect. (It wouldn't lock back on empty mag with 115 I thought it was the mags. But with 124 it locks back with the optic on board)

Love that top photo. Adorable is always welcome.

Your write up on how to introduce folks to shooting was spot on. It's the approach I've used over the years. Fortunately, one doesn't have to be an expert, like a certain Weasel I could mention, to teach the basics. Refinements can come later. Safety, sight picture, squeeze the trigger and keep the distances short so they can see their success and improvements.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 17, 2022 07:17 PM (fF2aM)

30 I'd like to ask for the Horde's input please: I need a barrel for an AR 223/5.56 project build.

Functionality -- This is for a back forty fun/HD rifle. Top quality precision for long range shooting is not needed. Other than plinking, my guy will not be putting too many rounds through it. He normally shoots out of the box 55gr Remington PMC FMJ or comparable Winchester ammo.

So, I'm currently thinking a 16in, government/standard profile, 1 in 9 in twist, mid-length gas system, nitrided barrel. I don't have specific manufacturers in mind -- certainly open to any suggestions and advice. Thank you.

44 Happy Easter. I have a question for all out there. Midway sells a chronograph, American made, Competition Electronics brand. Very inexpensive, just over $100. Does anybody have experience with these? Due to infirmities, my shooting is getting to be more and more off a bench. I can get real nerdy at times, and I think a chronograph with a logbook and calculator could pass the time.

46 Definitely 22 for rabbits. It has over a century of proven effectiveness and costs a LOT less for the ammo.

If you are feeling historical, use a 32 caliber muzzleloader or a 20 gauge fowler.

47 I taught Hunter Safety for 20 years, mostly youth but we could have everything up to 70 year old grandmothers in a class. The second-to-last day was a live-fire Range Day, which always was a huge amount of fun. From this I have become convinced of two things:

The young girls are the best students. Mainly, because they listen and pay attention. It was not unusual for a girl who paid attention and worked at it to outshoot a boy the same age.

Every shooter should start out with .22LR, and not move up to a larger caliber until experienced and competent with that.

Posted by: The Neon Madman at April 17, 2022 07:26 PM (KSXRc)

48 Also DMV MGC (-) (for you non Army types that means a subset) went to the range to shoot said 226. And also a rented Glock 48 with a Crimson Trace red dot. And a new EP9 with the world famous $20 Gaialoop red dot. And an SP5k with irons. Oh and a Glock 44 with irons.

We learned that swa has become a very good shooter. Well better than Ed L and I pretty much!

Also have her almost bracketed on firearm selection. G48 MOS is on the bubble.

52 I've had some experience teaching firends (especially women) how to shoot, and I teach the third method he shows. It's easier for a novice shooter, in my opinion. It's also one that doesn't depend on having a spare mag (that most CC holders don't have). The fourth method seems...unlikely, and potentially impractical.

I was in an IDPA tournament (Steel City in Birmingham, AL) and had two failures to extract cost me first place. I got really good at clearing these while my M&P Pro was having its extractor replaced.

A cop friend of mine asked me to teach his wife how to shoot defensively. (My wife was teaching him some cooking techniques. Strangest wife swap EVER!) I had her to the point she could recognize (TAP RACK BANG NO WORK! EXTRACTION PROBLEM!) an FTE and get the gun working in about 6 seconds. Not as fast as this guy, but not bad.

I think one of the problems with polymer ammo is heat, in that the brass from conventional ammo also doubles as a heat sink for the firearm.

I believe Herschel Smith discussed the heat sink issue over at his blog, Captains Journal.

77 Quick range report ...

We've been plagued by painters in the house the last two weeks. The schedule has suffered mightily! But have been twice and worked at 21' and 25' distances: first on the 25 dot drill (3" dots, 5 across and 5 down) and then on "Q" targets (similar to the FBI silhouette). The 5 dot is a hoot, first as slow fire and then timed to 25 seconds. My coach was a world ranked shooter at one time and is scary good. Without practice, he's around 75-80%. Me ... well, at 25 seconds I made it to around 15 and broke down laughing when the target turned away from me. It's a lot of fun and certainly a fine way to be humbled in less than a minute.

I'd add one thing to Weasel's tips up above: challenge yourself! It's been interesting to see how shooting "above my skill level" focuses and improves a skill set. Apparently there's something about it that's different from what happens with repetitive practice.

Been getting ready for Summer Carry Season and practicing with the HK P2000SK - LEM. I know lots of people who don't care for the trigger, but the DAO style demands attention. Can't hide any flaws. It's a great little gun and easy to carry.

You might want to consider a 20" barrel as well. 55 grain FMJ was originally designed for a 20" barrel with a 1 in 14 twist. If you want to retain some ability to use rounds with different weights, consider going w/ the GI 1 in 7 twist. Heavier bullets (62 grain green tip in particular) lose their accuracy coming out of the 1 in 14 or 1 in 12 twist barrels. There was a reason we were told not to fire green tips out of M16A1s.

I had a great day yesterday. It was one of those days when everything seems to go right. I rented the G48 MOS because I was hoping the very slim grip would give me better access to the trigger. Fit was perfect. Although the slide was a little stiff, I shot really well even though it was lighter than my G44. I think it was a brand new addition to the rental collection and we were thinking that maybe I was the first person to shoot it.

At the time, the P226 and M9 were engaged in the battle to replace the vaunted 1911 as their normal carry pistol. The DoD decided that the per copy price of the P226 was too high, and went with the Beretta. The SEALs chose the P226 anyway.

Yeah, but, heating from the friction of a bullet going down the barrel is probably where the problem lies. No matter how you slice it, there is going to be a ton of heat transfer at the throat, both from powder and the bullet.

My two cents, which is probably still overvalued, even with inflation.

98 Is that 30% weight reduction of the loaded round or just of the case? Because the thread is kind of slow and I'm feeling geekier than usual, I went and weighed an empty .308 case. It was right at 178 grains, which was more than I would have guessed before checking. With a 168 gr bullet and a nominal charge, that makes the case roughly 45% of the weight of the loaded round. I suppose if you're humping around several hundred rounds, it would make a difference.

Posted by: Oddbob at April 17, 2022 07:45 PM (nfrXX)

99 After shooting the G48, I pulled out my G44. After advice from Weasel, took the Hogue grip off which was making it difficult to pull the trigger. Did so,e of my best shooting of the day. Kind of sealed the deal knowing I would have a 22 practice gun. TheG48 and G44 almost identical in configuration except for the slimmer grip on the G48.
Then I started to run into a problem.

102 Yesterday, my son took me to the range. It was a part of his Christmas gift to me. We have a spectacular hi-tech range nearby, and we went there. The range has a rental policy where you pay the rental fee, and can then swap out your original weapon at no charge for a different rental weapon during your range session. The only requirement is that you must purchase the range*s ammo for the rental. Before the canoe accident, I had several handguns. I am not well versed in rifles, so be kind if I use wrong words. We started with an AR platform rifle, then swapped it for a long barreled pistol in an AR platform. Both had red dot sights and were easy and fun to shoot. We finished up with an AK 47, which, excuse the pun, was a blast to shoot. We had a really fun day at the range!

105 Anyway, speaking of IDPA, that's what I did yesterday.
Did ok, ended up 39th out of 63...so in the middle. Didn't make any glaring mistakes this time and completed all courses of fire.

I need to do more one handed drills, though.

It got pretty cold sometimes in Renton but no rain. So no complaints.

I need to also get more presenting practice with Bubby Fly (Glock 17). There's no reasonable way to use the sights as mounted so it's red dot or guesswork. And I did experience some 'find the dot' games that slowed me down a touch. Accuracy was pretty good, though, especially at range. Bubba is a lightweight, accurate platform and didn't choke on me...unlike some other shooter's guns. (wew lad, bringing an XDS you haven't sighted in with a recoil spring from a different pistol...yeah that'll cause trouble)

109 More on the gun I forgot about. I picked up a Taurus Slim and threw it into a storage tote years ago, and came across it. Being a Taurus, I gave it a good shakedown. Couple boxes of crap ammo to get it good and dirty, followed by some crappier ammo, followed by some good stuff. Verdict, no FTF, no FTE. I may press this into service, IWB holster, small of back, accessible with left hand palm out. This is due to the cane. I have practiced hanging it from my right pocket and drawing, but if I'm on shaky footing left hand draw might come in handy.

110 Found that the SP5K-PDW works better w/ standard pressure 9mm, not +P. I think the additional pressure makes the bolt cycle a bit too fast, causing jams when the casing doesn't have time to clear the weapon before the fresh round gets fed in.

118 @secondcitylurker, please don't wait until you "think" you're ready, because, honestly, you'll never be ready.

Standing at the line, shooting at paper versus moving and shooting on the clock, world of difference.

I've shot multiple matches at different ranges and found shooters new to a discipline are always welcomed and pretty much given one on one instruction. Clubs want to encourage people, not chase them away through giving them a bad experience.

By the way, you won't embarrass yourself, because everyone who shoots matches had to start somewhere.

126 As part of my optics all the handguns thought I think that optic ready pistol production is going to displace non-optic production. And economics are going to drive that. So the G17 and G19 are bread and butter for Glock so emphasis will go there for MOS.

135 Happy Easter, Gub Horde and fearless leader Weasel!

Range report: took the family arsenal and the (barely) adult offspring to the range to (re-)familiarize them with the mechanics of shooting each. My daughter insisted that she preferred the .38 SPL revolver, because of ease of loading, right up until she shot it a few times - then my 9mm compact Shield M2.0 wasn't so bad after all. She had some trouble with the Shield slide and can't reliably load more than 3-4 rounds in a magazine, but she's no longer frightened of it. Mittleson, who is taller than I am, had no trouble with either handgun.

Then, as luck would have it, the car wouldn't start, so we had to unstrap the canoe and row back home, it tipped in the deepest part of the water, and -- well, you know The Rest Of The Story.

The DMV Moron Gun Club got the opportunity to try out .30 Super Carry a couple of months ago (a few rounds each, maybe half a mag tops). I thought it shot pretty well. Less recoil out of a lightweight CCW handgun than I expected out of handgun normally chambered in 9mm. I forgot the make and model of the handgun, though.

A lot of Euro 9mm prefer 124 gr bullets for accuracy. American brands of 9mm seem to like 115 gr better. You can experiment on some firearms with a Wolf spring kit that has various recoil springs of different weights so you can optimize your recoil spring for operation and cartridges.

155 Although Weasel talks about learning the fundamentals of shooting, his advice is very useful to learning *any* skill!

The secret to learning is *DELIBERATE PRACTICE*. They say it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill, but that's misleading. It takes many, many hours just focusing on ONE aspect of a skill until you have improved to the point where it's second nature. That's exactly what Weasel is talking about here--focusing on ONE element at a time, then starting to combine them until it all feels natural.

Good luck on the range!

157 Acceptance of new ammo has always been a problem, often resulting in guns for it going nowhere. Take, for example, the Evans rifle. Did everything it was supposed to with a 28 round magazine capacity. The designer insisted on his own cartridge, ballistically not that much different from commonly available stuff. You have a rifle you can't find ammo for. The Evans was improved, but stuck with the oddball ammo, and died.

169 So, I'm currently thinking a 16in, government/standard profile, 1 in 9 in twist, mid-length gas system, nitrided barrel. Posted by: Tonypete
---------------
Tried emailing you Tonypete. I use tutanota which is a competitor of Proton but less well known. For a bog standard M4ery 16 inch barrel, Stoner (Midway's House brand) is usually pretty decent and not that expensive. Midway has pretty good customer service if the barrel won't shoot. Bear Creek Arsenal is hit or miss on accuracy and on deals can be incredibly cheap but I would get their stainless barrels rather than chrome moly or nitrided as people seem to have a bit less trouble with them. They are pretty cheerful about taking them back if they don't work.

Step up is Faxon with their Gunner barrel but I dunno if they make them anymore in 1:9 which if you like lighter bullets than 55 gr. for varmint control is about the maximum twist rate. Ballistic Advantage is another mid level barrel maker and is owned by Aero Precision. Their Hanson profile is pretty popular. FWIW, unless you plan on mag dumps, go with wylde chamber instead of 5.56. It will shoot 5.56 fine with more accuracy.

I would advise against using American Red Cedar for anything in the cigar arena. Box humidors are lined with Spanish Cedar (a white cedar), for good reason. The American Red is loaded with tannins and oils that you're not going to want to introduce to your stogie. PITA, but you're still better served getting the cedar "pages" that nestle between layers in a box of cigars, or otherwise get strips of Spanish Cedar from your local cigar emporium.

I'll bring more of a variety of cigars to Corsicana this year. We'll give a couple of "extra-aged" (more than 15 years) sticks a try, and see how they've held up.

on another note, picked up 80 rounds of 5.56 today @ $0.65/round. .45acp was $0.40/round. .380 was out of stock. lots of useless 9mm though

If Rossi put out their Winchester 92 clone in this chambering, I think it'd be a hit. It'd help if Taurus produced a few different revolvers in this caliber, promoting the ammo commonality.

Henry would have a hit on their hands here, as well.

Back a century ago, the .32-20 was considered "adequate" for deer. A bit marginal by today's standards, but there's a whole universe of slain deer out there that'd testify!

Blake is an experience competition shooter and he knows of what he is talking about.

My advice when starting is simply go slow and try to maintain safety and accuracy rather than working against the clock.

Safety and accuracy while staying within the rules is enough to absorb for a couple of competitions. Try to go fast too early and you can learn bad habits. A trainer that competes can also give you a faster start than what I suggest.

193 I do 3d printing. So my YouTube surfing has now crossed the streams and 3d Gun printing is my current binge.

Now you arent going to take a consumer grade 3d printer and make a gun you can shoot. But you can print a Glock frame. And apparently you can get metal parts from Polymer80 to turn that into a shooting Glock.

Also seems like you can print a suppressor that will work pretty well. For at least a while.

This information is presented for educational and entertainment purposes only.

It is a fine round like most of its 32 brethren but a bit of a pita to reload because of the case necks. It was the 32 H&R Magnum before there was such a thing in handgun loadings. Rifle loads were a step about that to about .327 Magnum specs other than pressure.

I recommend Starline brass and if you come across some old 32-20 ammo, be aware that back in the day, rifle loads and handgun loads of the same cartridge were sold. Do not use the rifle loads in an old 32-20 revolver. Vice versa is fine.

217 I would advise against using American Red Cedar for anything in the cigar arena.

228 whig.. back when I started, the competition was the ye olde Police Practical Course (PPC). Remember the bull-barreled PPC revolvers, usually a Douglas barrel with a BoMar Rib that could double as a construction girder?

The late, great Bob Day, owner of The Powderhorn gunstore (now run by his son, David), built the Day Arms 1500, probably the finest, most underappreciated PPC gun ever made. S&W Model 10 at the core, but there wasn't a single part that Mr. Day didn't make run smoother and work better. If you ever see a Day Arms 1500, BUY IT ! (but I digress)

PPC was a pretty fair mix of Bullseye and The Clock. Maximum range was 50 yards, so it was real test of how well one had or hadn't..mastered the basics.

Optics made their first serious inroads aboard revolvers, most notably the Bianchi Cup matches.

It's interesting that .32 Magnum is constantly sold out, while .327 Magnum seems relatively plentiful. I'm not sure if they're overproducing the latter or the demand is just much higher for the former.

I think that .32 Magnum is the ne plus ultra for concealed carry revolvers. Crisp but not excessive, it uses .38 frames so it's light to carry, and you even get an extra round vs .38.

For the sensitive types, you can load .32 Long and get a very mild shooting experience that still packs twice the energy of a .22 LR.

For even weirder folks, you can safely fire .32 ACP, though ammo choice is critical here.

Red,
You might try some different brands of 22 LR with it if you want to keep the very tight chambers. Another option is to rent a finish chamber reamer and ream it out to spec. With the barrel out of the firearm, takes about 2-3 minutes to do.

If the barrel was used, make sure that you do not have fouling in the throat as that could be making your chamber even tighter or the chamber could actually be a short chambered barrel which needs reaming to final length. Most match barrels are not drop in and are short chambered with the gunsmith doing the final reaming to the customer's particular action.

Red cedar is the juniper. Said berry of the English variety is the flavorant of gin. Berries are used in cooking (e.g.venison). Aromatic cedar (same) is used for boxes, closets, etc. as they repel moths and other critters.
White cedar is the arborvitae. No odor. I doubt has same insect repellent properties. Does have many of the decay resistance properties.

PPC folks did all kinds of things to get advantages such as Smolts or Cougar hybrids back in the day. Unfortunately, if you were not leo or something similar, they would not let average Joe walk in to compete. Beautiful firearms made for one specific purpose--to win the competitions.

I shot IPSC for a year or two at the local level back in the 00's but the game was even then getting taken over by race pistols and somewhat dubious scenarios. Don't care much for that.

We do aluminum cans with air rifles. Set them up on the ground, maybe 20 yds away. Lay a stick about 10' behind.
First team to advance beyond the stick wins.
Got a son that can do the Clampett ricochet trick pretty well. Hard to beat. Bounces the pellet off the gravel to knock the can upwards.

260 I think that .32 Magnum is the ne plus ultra for concealed carry revolvers.

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd
-------------------------
I would agree with you but unfortunately, other than a few special runs, 32 H&R revolvers are only being made consistently by Charter Arms which has had some troubled times over the years. Essentially, you have to buy the 327 Magnum revolvers to shoot the 32 H&R.

264 Jim SND,

I agree that the 32-20 is an underappreciated rifle cartridge now. Back when shooting for the kitchen pot was important, it did the job when it counted for the families. It was also the third most popular cowboy cartridge back in the day--45 Colt, 44-40, and the 32-20 was third.

Yeah, I've noticed. I think that instead of making unneeded new calibers, the industry should look at the growing female demographic. I get that .32 Magnum didn't catch on a decade or so ago, but now is a great time to reintroduce it, particularly because .38 frames can so easily be adapted to it.

Bob from the NSA most probably. I can tell you my experiences--I use AR's as 'working guns' rather than trying to wring out accuracy from them but I have had experiences with all the different barrels that I have mentioned above in AR (Midway's Stoner barrels used to be made by Saturn barrels in Iowa-dunno about now), I have a self defense carbine setup with regular handguards with a Bear Creek Arsenal barrel in stainless, and have used Ballistic Advantage in a 308 build as well as 5.56. I have also built some with Remington/Bushmaster barrels which were quite good. Not sure if any stock is left over for those.

Posted by: SARDiver at April 17, 2022 07:35 PM (Cmxw

SEALs have now switched to the Glock 19.
At the time, the P226 and M9 were engaged in the battle to replace the vaunted 1911 as their normal carry pistol. The DoD decided that the per copy price of the P226 was too high, and went with the Beretta. The SEALs chose the P226 anyway.

Personally never been a Glock fan, but if they like them, great.

Posted by: SARDiver at April 17, 2022 07:40 PM (Cmxw7)

The SEALs must be unimpressed by the new DoD general issue replacements for the M9, the Sig-made M17 full-size and the M18 compact-size. Striker-fired, they are essentially Sig commercial P320 full-size and compact pistols with a manual safety added per the DoD requirements. They also have the capability to mount a red-dot sight, again per DoD requirement. I like my M17. Oh, well, who am I to tell the SEALs what to use? Perhaps the SEALs want magazine and parts commonality with their allied counterparts.

The Polarrhoid Camera is used by medical types to record images of Polarrhoids. Common malady caused by exposing one's nether regions when relieving one's self in arctic or subarctic climes.

If I tried it again, I would prefer a DA 45 Colt revolver if I had one, which I don't. Or, better yet, use a stainless steel Ruger Old Army. Wouldn't be too fast but they are accurate and will do the job. (It helps to compete for fun, not for first place.)

For clandestine work, weapons shouldn't have any markings at all. No serial numbers, manufacturer's markings, bar codes, or anything that could aid tracing. That's why it's hard to figure out how many Welrod pistols and DeLisle carbines came off the lines or who made them. Without serial numbers or markings, no one could figure out exactly who used them or where they were made.

322 Curiously enough, close to the old 32-20 in specs with a bit smaller bullet. Or you can think of it as an updated 30 Mauser/7.62 Tokarev with a bit heavier bullet.

I'd be very happy with a modern handgun in 7.62 Tok. As of now, I have my T33 in an ammo can, isolated with what boxes of ammo I have left for it. Only way I can be sure of it not spreading.

380 1. I saved and printed Weasel's training recommendations. I usually bring multiple guns to the range. Today I went alone and focused on one. I I I learned more about that gun today than all the others. Still not thrilled but it's making more sense.

I clean my guns when they jam. Ha! Seriously, I clean them but I'm not anal about it. If I can only afford to put 20 rounds through the .308 bolt why should I clean it every when I can put 50+ through the 9mm at the same time/price. I think the gun should fire good ammo way more often than I can afford to fire it. I can clean at the range if I have to. If I shoot 25 rounds at trap and my friend comes home with more than 25 ducks in one day, I don't think he's cleaning half way through his day. Maybe afterwards because he's out in the marsh.

Love the thread. Made last year's NoVaMoMe. This year it has to be Wildwood that weekend. I hope to alternate until I'm out of the hell hole known as New Jersey.

this seems like an excellent idea if the seat rotation can be locked in once the height has been selected, I always seem to have an problem getting my position, the rifle position, and the table/support height to a comfortable match. This would seem to make that combination far easier to set up.

When trying to diagnose shooting issues, cutting down the variables helps. For example, shooting the same brand and bullets from the factory, cleaning and lubing the firearm to spec, checking the magazines, and so on. With multiple firearms, it is more difficult to diagnose any shooting problem (or for that matter a mechanical problem with a firearm). You can loosen up a bit when you become good friends with a particular firearm.

When we came back from the range the cooks would breakout the dedicated garbage cans and emerson heaters they heated C rations with. We would field strip weapons, wrap the metal parts in a towel, and dip them into the boiling water. Then oil them up and put them back together. Guess it worked cause we kept doing it.

397 I saw a video of a Ukrainian boy, a 4 year old, walking down some dirt road all by himself. He was screaming. I can't get it out of my mind.

Yeah, fuck that kid. It's all just propaganda.

398 I totally missed because of Easter. But it's a nice read. Thanks, again, Weasel.

A couple of things on good practice:
As to taking only one gun: it's sort of like going out on a date with your mistress and your wife. Unless they have a particular kind of kink, you really can't concentrate with both of them there.

One thing you forgot (but mentioned offhand in the last point) is the idea of lessons or a knowledgeable "range buddy". Someone who can look at what you're doing (you can't, as you're busy looking at the target) and suggest things like we've seen mentioned a lot here: flinching, loose grip, bad grip, even catching something wrong with the extraction or stripping the next round from the magazine. Not every time. But certainly on a deliberate basis as part of your planned skill work.
