90 that bird with the golf balls is a Seriama, it is a bird from the Pampas in Argentina and Paraguay, it hunts and kills lizards and such by picking them up and dashing them against the ground until they stop moving.
They are a bit monomaniacal, I am told.

They are also a relative of the "Terror Birds" the Phorusrhacus family (I had to look it up, Titanis walleri is the one that is referred to from north America) that were about the size of an ostrich and had the big beak and were a pretty impressive predator in the Pliocene

Shemesh, who is a fan of the late paratrooper, noted that the date on the gravestone was Tamuz 21 when in fact, Szenes was born on Tamuz 11. She immediately notified the Defense Ministry, and the date was corrected.

Hannah Szenes was a Jewish Hungarian paratrooper who fought the Nazis in World War II. She was eventually captured and sentenced to death at the age of 23. She is buried in the Mount Herzl cemetery alongside many Israeli fallen soldiers.

(and I'm leaving out the obvious, and cringe-inducing - due to what it said about the absurd lack of any real press - visible smile or jump in intensity Trump would have when he got an actual question about something interesting)

186 The degradation just oozes from every aspect of every event and story, every day.

The bimbo Psaki ad-libing about "relief" that "we aren't sending the president to Ukraine" - as if there would be any danger in that.

It'll come as a shock to the increasingly dumbed down and misinformed American public - and to many here, I think - that there have been no Russian efforts to attack leadership targets in Ukraine, aside from some strictly military HQs, all of them subsidiary and outside Kiev. Nor infrastructure, including a lot of military importance (where does everyone think all the cell phone imagery and messages have been coming from? Easily interdicted but completely unmolested comms networds)

Had a taste yesterday of just how effectively stupid and misinformed people are about any important details of what's been going on. The propaganda that's replaced anything resembling a press must rival a lot of the crap that Russian media feeds it audience.

There's going to be a pretty lopsided exchange rate for prisoner exchange as time goes on. Russkis claimed to have jugged over 1K "morpyekhi" (marines) in Mariupol about 10 days ago, and whoever survives the Azovstal factory situation will add to that. Then there's good chance of large number of POWs from the ongoing eastern operations, if the russkis succeed in what they're attempting.

By June, I'd expect a nearly mask-free flight. But there'll surely be exactly the kind of 'tards aboard, who'll even have the undertaker lay 'em out in the box, mask and all.

386 What exactly *is* a cake walk, anyway?

Is it... like... taking a cake for a walk? In a little wagon maybe? I suppose that would be pretty easy, but.... why?

Or is it more like a diabetic's version of bar-hopping? Hitting up all the restaurants in a five block area, scarfing down a desert at each, and waddling your way back home several hours and several thousand calories later?

Because to be honest, that doesn't sound all that easy. That almost sounds like work. Tasty, tasty work.

Lincoln came close when he started sacking Generals in the East and Central fronts every time they got political or got a pasting from Bob E Lee or Bragg. Even though he got impatient with Meade, he never let him go from his post because he could give Lee a smackdown if he got an opening. GBurg, captured a few brigades on the Rappahannock, chewed up AP Hills division at Bristoe Station.. Meade wasn't going to be the war winner but he could manage Lee while Lincoln found someone who could.

So a "dance", made up to mock white people's terrible dancing, then adopted gleefully by white people, is derogatory... to black people?

I actually won a cakewalk once at a school fundraiser. The prize was a cake.

Creatine kinase was at 234 (range is 44-196) though down from 333 last year. Ck is a weird marker though, since a lot of things affect it. Other test was ferretin (protein that carries iron in the blood). Range for my age male is 38-380 and I'm at 17. I eat beef and other iron-rich foods, and I have no symptoms of anything that could cause low iron (anemia, etc). I'll talk to my doc and hopefully find out.

He tried ask the poor cashier which country she was from when she mercifully shut him down and told him to wait for the pharmacist off to the side.

I choose to believe he was oblivious, because if he wasn't, than that makes him a Grade-A Asshole.

The pictures were interesting; the hull did not appear badly damaged, but a lot of smoke and damage to the mid section. Speculation that the crew abandoned ship too fast; but the Ukrainians say the reason there was ineffective damage control and everyone abandoned ship so fast was that the Captain, as well as all of his bridge officers, were killed instantly when the first missile scored a direct hit on the ship's bridge. "Moskva" is the largest by tonnage warship sunk since WW2, although it's close to the General Belgrano's tonnage. Factoids: The General Belgrano began life as the USS Phoenix, CL-46, a Brooklyn-class light cruiser commissioned in 1938. Main armament was 15 6-inch guns in 5 triple turrets. She was moored in Pearl Harbor on December 7th but was not damaged.

Why do we call some places by the local names but not others?

Bombay became Mumbai. Kyev is now Kiev.

But we don't call Germany Deutschland.

Wassup with that?

545 Anyone know the terminal attack phase flight profile of the Neptune anti-ship missile? And perhaps how it compares to the Harpoon?

Would be interesting for conjecture as to the likely damages, belowdecks. Very different for systems that climb and the suicide-dive into the ship, vs. sea-skimming hull penetrators.

Even most of the climb & dive types are "sea-skimmers", till that final quarter or half mile before impact. Then they do their quick and violent arc, diving into the relatively thin decks and deckhouses, from above.

Yep. Hawkeye radar planes and Phalanx CWIS systems are some of a ship's very best friends.

I recall the Royal Navy being extremely surprised by the flammability of the innards of the modern cruiser HMS Sheffield, the first NATO ship hit by a modern anti-ship missile - an Exocet. About 40 years ago, in the Falklands War. Much of the fire was attributed to being started by un-used fuel in the Exocet, not to the warhead. Moskva/Neptune could be similar.

Russian propaganda is a form of Force Projection, and after so many decades, much of it is just propaganda backed by nothing. Still ... They have a lot of resources, hard to say what is really going to happen with so many resources being poured into Ukraine that might slow/defeat a lot of the overwhelming force applied by Russia.
