Inflation Soared 8.5% In March, Another Highest-in-40-Years Record

And that's just the first scoop of terrible news.

The second scoop of terrible news is that analysts increasingly fear a major recession to go along with the sky-high prices.

Prices rose 8.5 percent in March compared with a year ago, the largest annual increase in four decades, as Russia's war in Ukraine drove up energy prices even higher and policymakers launched a major effort to get soaring inflation under control.

This is from Jeff Bezos' comically corrupt corporate newsletter, so.

Watch in the next paragraph as liberal hopes transform into projections:

The inflation data, released Tuesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed prices rose 1.2 percent in March compared with February. Just a few months ago, officials at the White House and Federal Reserve hoped that inflation was starting to tick down month by month. But those projections were quickly dashed by Russia's invasion, covid shutdowns at major Chinese manufacturing hubs, and the bleak reality that inflation continues to spread through every crevice of the economy.

A projection is an economic prognosis. It's more than a hope. But the Washington Post sees no difference between what the left hopes will happen and what disinterested analysts actually project will happen.

The left has decided that Wishcasting -- not forecasting, but wishcasting, using your wishes and dreams to "predict" the future -- is real.

"One cannot escape it, even if one wanted to," said Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM. "This is going to continue for a while."

What I see you saying is "This is completely transitory."

Persistently high inflation comes as economists and analysts increasingly fear a looming economic slowdown. In March, Bank of America analysts lowered their estimates for growth in 2022 from 3.6 percent to 3.3 percent. The Federal Reserve also recently downgraded its GDP forecasts, with officials cautioning that the war in Ukraine is casting much uncertainty over the world order.

Note that they keep crediting this as real "growth" when it is really the economy returning to its previous baseline after having been artificially dampened by lockdown measures.

And now even this "growth" is going to slow.

And the Fed will have to continue raising interest rates to reduce inflation, while hoping that their interventions do not provoke a serious recession.

...

"The expectation going into this year was that we would basically see inflation peaking in the first quarter, then maybe leveling out," Fed Chair Jerome H. Powell said in March. "That story has already fallen apart. To the extent that it continues to fall apart, my colleagues and I may well reach the conclusion that we'll need to move more quickly."

A lot of stories have fallen apart, Jerry.

Thanks, NeverTrump! What fresh new horror have you planned for us next?

At Twitchy: All of the propaganda organizations are taking dictation from the White House -- the inflation is completely due to the Ukraine war, despite it actually being somewhat lower than the inflation we saw in December, January, and February before the war.

I guess I'm giving up on the full boycott of Salem. I'll just do a partial boycott.

What was that expectation based on, Jerome? We spent a year hurling funny money into the system under Trump, along with major economic disruption, also under Trump.

Then Biden came in and hurled even *more* funny money into the system while simultaneously *undoing* everything Trump did to help with economic growth and production. He eviscerated energy, increased regulatory burdens everywhere and maintained COVID madness for even longer.

Inflation takes a year, at the minimum, to work its way through. Had Biden thrown everything bad that Trump did (COVID and money-wise) into full reverse while doubling down on the good parts, then we might - MIGHT - be starting to come out of it now. But he didn't. He doubled down on the bad parts and threw the good parts into full reverse.

So why did you "expect" that?

In fairness to Powell, they've been doing it for a decade without broad-spectrum inflation. They've been pumping funny money and liquidity into the system for a long time and have created massive inflation, but it has been in equities and bonds for the most part, with knock-on effects in real estate.

But then they started doing helicopter drops during COVID and lost control. Those drops were HUGE and nearly indiscriminate.

Two reasons: time and compounding. He was out before it had time to hit bigly. It takes time for what our government did to filter its way through the economy. If Trump were president now, we'd still have high inflation.

But the compounding is a bitch. Biden not only kept the bad policies going, he destroyed the good policies at the same time. It makes everything worse and will keep making things worse for at least a year after they stop.

Biden not only kept the bad policies going, he destroyed the good policies at the same time.

-------

This is why it was so easy to predict this insane inflation, as of the moment Brandon was "elected."

I like to use the metaphor of the fox chasing the rabbit. During Trump, he did nothing to address the policies that cause inflation; in fact he made them worse, if anything. But he instituted a broad range of very pro-growth policies, allowing production to keep ahead of it. In essence, he didn't slow down the fox, but he injected the rabbit with enough steroids and meth to keep well ahead of it.

Brandon predictably took all of that go-juice away in one fell swoop, and the fox instantly caught the rabbit.

There used to be pet stores, but the only things left are breeders and the shelter animals they showcase every week at PetSmart. Which goes right back to the shelter issue.

Street kitten? In 2003 the puffball who became Linda's Angelique, prob. a Siberian, came up to me in an empty parking lot calling for help. She clearly was someone's pet. We advertised, checked at local vets, and nothing, so she stayed. But that sort of thing doesn't happen often.

Well, they'll never admit the stolen election part.

But, if past is prologue, then it *is* time to hand it over to their junior partners for a few years, to passively accept the blame the Party's media organs heap on them, while they wallow around in their customary supine torpor, and vacuum up graft like a political baleen whale.

Pretty much. This is why I'm not sure Denninger is right. The federal govt could basically "take over" the Fed and stop it from doing a real Volcker. That would be really big deal and look very bad.

I don't know what the current term proportions of the debt is. Rates are locked in when the Ts are sold. Short term debt rolls over quickly, and that's one thing Treasury started doing was rolling over debt into shorter term notes.

Once the bonds mature, they have to roll 'em. And that rolling will be very painful in a high interest rate environment.

That's why Denninger talks about "massive cuts" to health care. IOW, no Medicare for Grammy.

She wanted me to say that in court. I had to explain to my own lawyer that quoting The Terminator to describe my soon to be ex wife was a terrible idea, which is why it had comedic value when I did it in court after 7 hours on the stand.being questioned by her.

The Fed also has more options than in 1981. They have a HUGE balance sheet now, and can start draining it to pull money out of the economy. They can't do that while *also* keeping rates low, but the Fed *could* try to thread that needle and do a little bit of both, while preferring to sponge up liquidity.

Miss Linda got me one of those watches, not a Fitbit, a year or so ago. It's only real trouble is that when you tap it to get the distance readout, it may think you want to end the session, and it goes into summary mode instead of continuing to count elapsed time and measure the distance based on your stride. So I wear a separate sportwatch as well with a stopwatch mode.

No, it takes it out. The Fed's balance sheet was purchased with printed money. Money entered the system, an asset exited it.

When they sell the asset, the asset enters the system and the money exits. If the Fed then destroys that money (which would be the point), it shrinks the money supply by that much.
