The Morning Report - 4/12/22

pleasecontrolfauci.jpg

Good morning, kids. Tuesday, and as the Ukraine situation settles into a kind of stasis, the human suffering of innocent civilians notwithstanding, there are some alarming reports coming out of China's largest, and arguably most important city, Shanghai. 24 million people have been completely locked down and there are reports of civil unrest due to lack of food, and dare I say it, freedom.

Desperate Shanghai residents who are under strict lockdown over a [Chinese] COVID-19 outbreak are protesting food shortages, chanting “we want supplies” from their apartments, video shows.

Footage posted to Twitter showed people in the locked-down city banging pots on their balconies to decry a lack of food and other items, France24 reported.

“We want supplies,” the quarantined residents reportedly chanted.

In another video posted to the Chinese social media platform Weibo, a drone appears to warn the residents to cease protesting.

“Please comply with [Chinese] COVID restrictions. Control your soul’s desire for freedom. Do not open the window or sing,” the message from the drone said.

Other footage in recent days has shown residents struggling with security personnel and hazmat-suited medical staff at some compounds, with occupants shouting that they needed food supplies. . .

. . . Nearly all of Shanghai’s 26 million residents have been confined at home since last week, as the city aims to test, trace and centrally quarantine all people who test positive for the virus amid the spread of the highly infectious Omicron variant.

Color me highly suspicious about this. We are in an endemic phase with the General Tso's Sickness and probably have been for about a year already. The most vulnerable to it and any respiratory infection are the elderly and those with comorbidities. Cheap, proven therapeutics if prescribed early on can knock this out quickly. Even in China, the place that spawned this nasty little Franken-virus with assistance from our own Anthony Fauci. So what's really going on there?

Despite the Chi-Com's absolute control of media and messaging, we do know that the Chinese economy is on a massive bubble that can burst at any time. It's one-child policy is leading to demographic disaster, and the prosperity and exposure to western culture that the seeds of a little bit of government-controlled capitalism planted over 30 years ago by Deng Xiao Ping have born fruit in Chinese youth. That is running contra to the totalitarian dreams of Xi Jinping. I don't think Xi is on the ropes but his desire for absolute power has put him at odds with others in the party, and the clock is ticking. Obviously, a move on Taiwan would be an ideal distraction, but what's happening in Ukraine might give him pause.

Meanwhile, over here in the nation formerly known as the United States, here comes a story that the media is sure to try and embargo as best it can.

Despite imposing some of the strictest [Chinese] COVID-19 policies, New York, New Jersey, and California had the worst outcomes, according to a new study.

The study, which was conducted by the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, charted disparities in health outcomes, economic performance, and education among U.S. states since the start of the pandemic. Researchers found states such as Utah, South Dakota, and Florida that "maximized the individual freedoms of business owners, consumers, workers and parents—and allowed their citizens to make their own risk assessments without government mandates—had the best performance." By contrast, lockdown states such as New York, New Jersey, California, as well as Washington, D.C., had higher rates of learning loss for children in school, unemployment, and death.

Funny, as in beyond the pale disgusting, how a mass-murderer like Angel of Death Cuomo and others ripped Ron DeSantis, while in reality Florida prospered as New York died - literally and figuratively. Lockdowns and masks do not work and have never worked. But still, they persist as we now see in the City of Brotherly Cream Cheese and Street Violence, but mostly street violence. Philadelphia is reimposing mask mandates. Wearing a mask to stop the transmission of Peking Pox is like erecting a chainlink fence to keep out fleas. But, you do you, Jim Kenney.

And that segues back to DeSantis. From this insanity to the battle for the minds, bodies and souls of our children, DeSantis has had both the right instincts and the balls to tell the Left to fuck itself in the heart with a steak knife.

As the old saying goes, it's better to be lucky than good, but DeSantis has been both. Practically since he took office, events have broken his way, starting with the unnecessary hysteria over Covid-19 that, in the final analysis, was the thing that destroyed the Trump administration. After briefly flirting with lockdowns, DeSantis reversed course, bit the bullet, ignored media flapdoodle over "cases," and made Florida the free-state alternative to such draconian fascist entities as New York and California. Florida boomed as its rivals faded, hemorrhaging population and losing economic and political clout while the Sunshine State and also Texas happily welcomed the refugees. . .

. . . DeSantis has been lucky in his enemies as well. Incredibly, the now-"woke" Walt Disney Company—the embodiment of family friendly entertainment since its founding in 1923 through its founder's death in 1966 and up until recently—has decided that the Florida Parental Rights in Education bill (which DeSantis enthusiastically signed) preventing state teachers from discussing human sexuality, sexual orientation and "gender identity" with children in kindergarten through third grade is the hill the company wants to die on. . .

. . . With enemies like the company that bought Harvey Weinstein and the mainstream media, DeSantis doesn't need friends. Meanwhile, the governor has the wind at his back: more than a dozen states are considering similar bills, putting the Florida governor in the de facto driver's seat on the issue. From Covid to the Chinese suborning of America's institutions to the sitting daffy duck called Disney, DeSantis has staked out positions in direct opposition to the Biden Democrats—exactly what you'd expect from a Shadow President who's looking forward, not backward.

That is from friend of the blog and friend Michael Walsh, who as you know, is endorsing DeSantis for '24. While the salient point about Trump, should he run and win would be 78, is not necessarily a disqualifier, what the heck is he thinking endorsing Mehmet Oz, an Oprah protegé who has had a checkered history on issues (he was at one point in favor of gun control). That said, others in Trump's coterie have endorsed Oz while a similar group have endorsed David McCormack. This is getting into the weeds. Look, if Trump does get the nod, I will eagerly crawl naked over broken glass to vote for him. Exposing the kabuki-bukkake theater of the two-party system and electoral politics, as well as the Deep State leviathan that lords over us is one of the greatest achievements of his and any presidency. But it came at a cost, of course; his presidency and the existential threats we now face. His Achilles heel in trusting the wrong people at the wrong time and not going with his gut when the chips were down - specifically the handling of the initial China virus outbreak - has pretty much sealed the deal for me as well.

In his way, though, Trump paved the way for DeSantis as well as many others running up and down the ballot. Most crucially, in the pits where it really counts at the school and community board level.

So, Putin is bogged down, Xi seems to be getting paranoid, France has a shot (long though it is) at waking the hell up, and the Hungarians have put their foot down, amongst other things. And back over here, people are absolutely sickened and alarmed as perverts seek to turn children into sex objects and then mind-numbed automatons for the all-powerful State.

"'Margaret Sanger believed in euthanasia and sterilization of 'unfortunate' and mentally challenged, and Blacks. She was the founder of Planned Parenthood, which, like all organizations expanded its brief, (originally one of control of sub-humans) in the control of all conception. Her insights were taken up in the 60s with 'hygiene classes,' which became 'sex education,' educators holding that because perhaps the children were not taught at home, the higher orders needed to take charge, and now we have kindergartens trained in a bizarre catechism of sexual identity politics. . .'"

. . . "You're putting these bizarre ideas in their head, and as the Jesuits taught us correctly, you give me a kid until he is seven, he is mine for life. . . "

. . . "... We've got to take back control, and the best way to do it is through school choice, and that's why the Democrats oppose it -- right?" said Mamet.  "Because school choice means I get the right to raise my kids. And, as you say, the Marxists want the state to raise the kids, in fact, they insist upon it."

That was former leftist turned conservative and award-winning film and theater auteur David Mamet. It is amazing to me how right Rush Limbaugh and Andrew Breitbart were about the "culture war." Breitbart himself said "politics is downstream of culture." Even an execrable beast like Al Sharpton understands that these issues are political kryptonite.
It's gratifying that there is growing disaffection from historically rock solid Democrat voting blocs. It's disheartening that they - like we - will (in theory) hold their nose and vote Republican, but it's because they're voting against the Democrats.

And therein lies the opportunity. A change is in the wind. Can we survive long enough to see it happen?

17 Again, I'm not quite sure why "Sex Education" needed to ever be taught in elementary school or for that matter in any grade below 10th, and still even then it's suspect for strangers to be talking about sex with minors.

But the introduction of gender confusion propaganda is a million bridges too far.

The only way out of the hell we are in is to take back the schools from these maniacs.

19 China's situation reminds me of the old variety spinning-plate acts. (which were usually done by Chinese performers, ironically) Running China, feeding a billion + people per day, and keeping track of all of those interactions is like keeping a billion plates spinning in the air at the same time. Once the performer gets behind and some of the plates start to crash, they all crash in very quick order.

23 a note about Oberlin, as pointed out at Legal Insurrection: The school was forced to post bond equal to the judgment against it when it appealed. When all appeals are over, then that bond is automatically forfeited to the Gibson family. At this point, Oberlin is toying with the idea of appealing to the Ohio Supreme Court (the only possible appeal they have left) and most think the Ohio Supreme Court will refuse to take the case. The Appeals Court decision was quite definitive, and shot down every legal point Oberlin tried to raise quite effectively.

33 The ideas that Civilians and prisoners should be treated well in war is a good one, but also peculiar to late Western European civilization. No one else in the world has ever respected those rules, certainly not the slavs.

I see no reason to doubt that the Russians have been killing civilians as the Ukes have said - I see no reason to doubt that the Ukes have been executing wounded prisoners the way the Russians have said. This is a central asian blood feud, it's naive to expect any better behavior out of either side than one would have expected out of Ghengis Khan's mongols horde.

and this is not to excuse it, just to point out why it's foolish to say either side is morally "better" than the other side. They're both just two sides of the same coin.

127 It's one-child policy is leading to demographic disaster...
++++
Led to. Past tense. The one-child policy was strictly enforced until the mid 90s, and it led to endemic sex-selective abortion. Despite being a bunch of communists, Red China's "safety nets" aren't very large and so if you can only have *one* child, you need that child to be able to take care of you when you're elderly, and that means you need a man, not a woman.

China backed off policy enforcement and started writing exceptions to it and rolling back other population-control measures. They actually did away with the policy in 2015, and got rid of most other population control rules by last year. But something interesting happened in the meantime: the policies stopped being effective. Every time they liberalized the policies, population growth did not come roaring back. Even today, the birthrate is low.

Red China put in its oppressive population control measures at the worst possible moment in time. They front-ran the natural birthrate decline that comes with prosperity by around a generation. An entire generation lost and destroyed for no reason to solve a "problem" that would have solved itself.

We're in a post-fact world. It's just a balance of propaganda now. The best sources for data (based only on completeness and consistency, if not methodology) were Israel and the UK. Both have reduced their publication and update rates, or just quit publishing entirely.

1. Yes, there is, sort of. It's the "University at Buffalo" and it is a part of the great rebranding of SUNY schools that started about maybe 15 years ago. SUNY Buffalo became "University of Buffalo." SUNY Binghamton became "Binghamton University." SUNY Albany became "University at Albany." Etc.
2. The university - whatever its name - is firmly to blame here. The student perpetrators are to blame, too, but the university and it's captive police forces could respond to this. They don't want to. They've created and are maintaining an environment of consequence-free violence.

He could have stopped when asked, got in his car and drove away. Zero sympathy.

This should never be in your closing - both convictions so far told the jury to "convict on some, but not other charges" - it's a losing strategy.

Mark Rollins, Robertson's attorney, argued in his closing statement that the jury should convict his client on several of the misdemeanor charges, conceding that "there was no good argument to find his client not guilty."

In numbers or rates? In numbers, I'd expect that because most people are vaccinated. In rates (infections per 100k population or whatever rate is used), it shouldn't be that big a spread. If it is that big in raw data, I'd be interested to see what happens when it's controlled for demographics (age, sex, wight, urban, etc.).

But these things aren't done anymore. Nobody wants the answers.

Gay ex-Justice Minister Crispin Blunt is slammed by all sides of Westminster after he defended suspended Conservative MP Imran Ahmad Khan and described his conviction for sexually assaulting a boy, 15, as an 'international scandal' and 'dreadful miscarriage of justice'. He said the sexual assault conviction would have 'dreadful wider implications for millions of LGBT+ Muslims around the world' and claimed the prosecution's argument relied on 'lazy tropes about LGBT+ people'. He also called for the convicted sex offender to be reinstated to public service.

Khan sought a media gag. He argued that as an Ahmadi Muslim, both the consumption of alcohol and homosexuality are strictly prohibited within his faith, and the reporting of those matters would expose him to 'a risk to his safety both here and abroad'.

220 Ah, BLS. Official CPI. Looking inside for the unadjusted year-over-year (March to March);
- All Items: 8.5
- Food (all): 8.8; Food at home: 10.0
- Energy (all): 32; Energy services: 13.5; Natural gas: 21.6
- New cars: 12.5; used cars: 35.3 (#supplyChain)
- Shelter: 5.0
- All items less food and energy: 6.5

The shelter figure is a flat-out lie and always is. Food is likely lower than it actually is but even the printed figure is a disaster. Energy is a catastrophe.

Its the infections caused by COVID along with the spike proteins shredding up organs and the blood vessels that kills and causes trips to the doctor and hospital. We're just now coming *out* of the "Cash For Clunkers" hangover. The problem now is new vehicle supply. The supply chain is wrecked and vital electronic components are harder to come by and taking longer to get delivered. Production is down. If you *need* a car right now, buying new is not a good bet. That leaves you with the used market, and demand is completely dislocated from supply. A lot of used cars being sold are being sold to buyers who would have bought new if they could have gotten delivery in a reasonable time.

This is actually a great time to buy a new car, if you can wait a long time. One local dealer is offering 5% off of sticker on any new car they order for you (and that's the opening offer, you can probably get it lower), but you'll have to wait - maybe even wait close to a year - for delivery.

It's the OER dodge. OER - "Owner Equivalent Rent" - is a giant patch on shelter inflation to keep the rates down. It converts everything to rent and tries to figure out how much your house would cost you if you rented it. It isn't house price, it's imputed rental rates for houses. It eliminates bubbly housing prices from the CPI.

But actual rent is harder to mask and I am astonished that they're claiming shelter inflation was only 5%. I'd love to see the regional figures when they come out, because rents are way up in tons of places.

There is no debate that Jared was instrumental in the Abraham Accords that were the most significant peace deals in the Middle East in decades. I bet you approve.

A little perspective. One of Trump's biggest draws in 2016 was that he was an outsider running to shake up and clean up the swamp. He hated them and they hated him to the extent they ran the Russia collusion hoax at him. The truth is very few wanted to work for him and some that did go the Micheal Flynn treatment.

Yea, he had some bad picks no doubt. All presidents do. But he also had some good ones like Wilbur Ross and Mnuchin. I don't know about you but I kind of liked unprecedented peace and prosperity, cheap gas and mean tweets.

I would definitely expect him to have a better staff next time around as he has far more eager to work for him. But in all this talk of DeSantis vs Trump all that people focus on with Trump is his staff picks and not his incredible list of accomplishments.

I bought a new car - my first new car, and likely the only one I will ever have - in 2017. It was the tail end of the model year and I got a screaming deal on it. It is now five years old and has about 45k miles on it. I am fanatical about maintenance and it is in like-new condition other than a small scrape on the front bumper that was some parking lot rando's gift to me.

If I sold it right now, I'd get about what I paid for it. It's unreal.

289 One reason Trump picked bad people is that there isn't much of a conservative NGO system to pull them from.

If you are a lefty President there are a world of people working for lefty NGOs that you can pull into your org knowing full well what they will do.

As a Republican you have controlled opposition orgs like NR, enemy orgs like the CoC, and then "cranks".

That doesn't mean the cranks aren't good effective people but...the org structure they come from doesn't give you much validation of how they will actually work out once given power.

No surprise at all. And Trump has some blame in this - he fired up the printing presses as a part of the COVID response, and it takes a year for the consequences to start filtering through the economy in earnest.

But what this administration has done is unconscionable. Not only have they done nothing to try to help, everything they have done makes it worse. Massive spending bills, more free money helicopter drops, massive regulatory interference and crippling production (especially energy), etc. The right time to start tackling the inflation problem was around a year ago. Instead, they spent the past year doubling down in every dimension.

Without Biden, we'd have inflation right now. But it wouldn't be as bad, and it would probably be starting to turn.

Energy alone is a major factor. But the past year of fiscal policy (and the Fed's monetary policy to accommodate it) has been ruinous. The Trump Bucks were a bad idea, but the Biden Bucks were stuck on stupid. Pulling that stunt *twice* was utterly insane. The "Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill" was a stupid and bad idea. 316 Here is Biden's new plan to lower gas prices (this is why he's going to Iowa today, to announce it):

In an attempt to lower high gas prices, the Biden administration wants to turn to a fuel that's potentially even dirtier than regular gasoline, the White House announced today. The Environmental Protection Agency plans to issue an emergency waiver that will allow the year-round sale of a fuel called E15, which is banned in most of the US during summer months when smog is a bigger risk.

E15 is a gasoline blend with up to 15 percent ethanol - a fuel made with plant material. The move is supposed to save Americans money while reducing dependence on foreign oil supplies because ethanol can be made with domestically-grown corn.

and there are a lot of regional influences. Generally, prices across the middle of the country, from Texas on up, would have to go up by another 100% (ie, double) before they get equivalent to average prices on either coast. As they say, location location location.

352 Some of the real estate demand is expected to decrease as rates rise and some buyers are knocked out of the market. But that's going to depend on the price of homes, with demand for higher end homes expected to be impact the least. That is until a lot of the resettling settles down. States like NY are still losing their millionaire population, who are buying the higher end homes. But the overall expectation is that a recession which most agree is coming, will slow the overall real estate market and probably impact prices for a certain tranche of homes. By the way, there are a lot of distortions in the market with big corporations buying a lot of inventory and holding it for renters.

Supposedly engines 2001 and newer are designed to handle it. FlexFuel engines can handle gas with up to 85 percent ethanol. Here's a factoid from Motor Trend, September 2021:

"Where Is E15 Sold?

Interestingly, in August 2012, there was only one gas station (out of 150,000) in the U.S. that sold E15 for regular vehicles. Today, almost a decade later? In addition to the QuikTrip outlet in Dallas, Texas, where we found E15 at the pump, there are still fewer than 2,000 retail distributors across 31 states."

I'll bet the big users or E15 and above are government auto fleets having a lot of FlexFuel vehicles, because you-know-why.

365 Ordinarily I would think that; but I fear the bottom is going to fall out of the Dollar market before it falls out of the Real Estate market.

For real estate to go down, the relative value of the Dollar would have to go up, and I just don't see that happening.

I agree, at least here in Florida. A good deal of the sales are to out of state buyers, who are relocating. There are multiple offers on most houses, so the demand is there. I would expect prices will continue up into the summer, as this is peak buying season for families. Prices may level off, but I do not expect a crash here, as builders cannot keep up with demand, and land is finite.

It's that easy. Trump is still an effective leader.

But you have to remember, when he first came on to the scene, he was "open" to the suggestion that somebody like Oprah would be a good running mate. Trump learned a lot from his constituency and at least is/was open to learning how to serve them.

Biden may well be installing a positive feedback system for illegals to come to the US. And if revenues at home decrease, MS-13 will migrate to where the money is: The USA. While we have some returns to vote on, we should vote on that. Not theory until we have to theorize who would be a good successor.

423 I'm old enough to remember the smell of leaded gasoline going into our car's tank as the attendant pumped it, checked our oil and washed the windows. That smell. That gasoline smell.

It smelled like....victory.

426 This is just anecdotal but in MD my daughter bought a new car (a hybrid) with less then a month wait. (She was told it might be 2 months). She considered getting a used car but with used car prices it didn't make sense.

I have to say it makes me want to trade in my car new if I can do it with minimal cost...

431 How about we go back to leaded gasoline?

There's fairly solid evidence that leaded gas fumes made people dumber. There's too much of that already.

435 The reason that Trump was always my 3rd choice (even when he was saying "ridiculous stuff" like Education was a primary role of the federal government), was that I thought that I had closely followed Walker's battles in Wisconsin and I thought I had a good idea of his mettle.

But he melted in the national spotlight. And it was *years* before 2015 that Scott Walker was on my "wish list" of POTUS candidates. Of course, I wasn't going to vote for Trump, if Walker was still in the running.

Dealing with the fact that Wisconsin Dems practically made it sedition to financially support Walker, and made that a subject of phone taps and no-knock morning raids, it's hard to see how Walker just melted like that.

439 Lots of comments in this short time. There are women and children being starved and murdered in many parts of Europe. The Chinese are asking for sympathy and help, hanging from their apartment windows in Shanghai. Maybe, if our Chinese friends had guns, their "government" might help or feed them. The US saved these pukes once without any thanks. How many times do we have to save them?

Maybe we should cut some of Kalifornica loose and ban them? I dunno, ask Jimmy Doolittle or the AVG! I am of the opinion, help them once, shame on them. Twice, shame on us. In fact, let's haf a referendumb among the states. Anybody who votes to become a commie or queer gets semt to Kclifornica, forever.

444 23 a note about Oberlin, as pointed out at Legal Insurrection: The school was forced to post bond equal to the judgment against it when it appealed.

If that doesn't work, put a lien on the college and sell off the land if they don't pay up. I'm sure the real estate is worth enough to pay the $33M...

445 Regarding Shanghai, given the issues the Russians have been having, a lockdown like this is a great excuse to test the ability of the military to coordinate and support the occupation of a city. One like Taipei.

Regarding France, if you look closer at what Marine Le Pen stands for. She supports expanding the welfare state and government interfering in the job market, and she is far from an American ally. Taking her over Macron is just as much settling as taking Oz over whatever Democrat.
