Top Story

  • There are curtains in the bedrooms. Not in the media room or the main living / dining area though. The listing photos didn't show any curtains at all, but they were there by the time of the video walkthrough. (Brand new house.)

I don't mind installing matching curtains in the other two rooms, even if that accounts for half of all the windows in the house. I get to see just how they fit in with carpet and paint colours rather than having to guess.

And I was leaning towards curtains rather than blinds anyway because as a modern design there's not a lot of warmth or soft edges and also blinds suck.

I expect to exchange contracts this Thursday, and move in around the 22nd of May.

    Now the fun begins.

  • Pinterest plans to block all climate misinformation. (The Guardian)

    Wait, there's information on Pinterest?
Pinterest is defining misinformation broadly: the company will take down content that denies the existence or effects of climate change or its human causes, as well as content that "misrepresents scientific data" in order to erode trust in climate science and harmful, false or misleading content about natural disasters and extreme weather events.
    Awesome!

So the idiots who blamed the Tongan volcanic eruption on global warming? Banned.

People who claim to be fighting global warming but also oppose nuclear power? Banned.

    Michael Mann? Banned.

    NPR? BANNED!

Wait, they're not actually going to enforce their rules? Well, that sucks.

6 Evening, Pixy,

You want curtains; trust me. Especially if the windows face west. Blackout drapes will help. That afternoon sun will heat your place in summer and make it tougher for your A/C to keep you cool. In cold weather it's nice to pull back the drapes, but if summer lasts 10 months like it does in the Gulf South, you want coverage. If you're sensitive to heat, you could have the windows tinted lightly too. Such is my plan if I ever buy a house.

For the lack of snow this winter I guess the rain is much needed. Things are starting to look green. A few crocus have bloomed.

21 Curtains are not permanent fixtures. They must be included in the closing documents to be considered 'part of the property'. Like a dishwasher, which is usually built in. Refrigerators, not so much. Curtains fall into the latter category.

Or so I recall.

Definitely. Though this town has a much cooler climate than Sydney, averaging 8-9C / 14-16F lower throughout the year. And the region has four distinct seasons, unlike Sydney which depending on the cycle of the Southern Oscillation has just two - either rainy & rainier in flood years, or dry & drier in drought years.

56 Shanghai, the perfect example of totalitarians preferring unarmed serfs. If 10% of the population were armed, and 10% of those had the will to do something, and if only 10% of those knew what to do and did it, the CCP would have their hands full.

Yes, blinds suck but verticals are great. Full coverage of window when you want privacy, completely open when you have a view. Easy to install, no dusting required because gravity. Fairly inexpensive compared to custom drapery. Most home centers carry a vast collection. I've had them installed in *even* my south facing windows for decades.
